Wide Awake (1998)
Wide Awake - Kid questions various spirituality
Too much saccharine - kiddy themes, wholesome music to complement the scenes. Felt similar to an after school special or a bizarre episode of Full House. Albeit, with strong directing and even better acting from the children.
Julia Stiles plays a supporting role as the sister Neena. Her participation is brief, but her ability to capture the viewers attention is evident, and highlights what will be strong acting career in her future.
Joseph Cross plays Joshua Beal, the main character who narrates the story throughout the movie. He is soft spoken and likable and documents his journey in 5th grade, as he searches for the meaning of life following a family loss. For his age, the performance is quiet solid.
Funny part - Rosie o'donnell mentions 6 hours without eating being sufficient to declaring it a fast.....no comments needed!
Very odd balance of a children's movie mixed with exploration of spiritual/religious practices. The movie briefly mentions meditation and muslim prays to mecca, but doesn't delve deeper than a brief moment.
Would I watch again? No. Should I have watched the 1st time? Nope!
Knock Knock (2015)
Light weight thriller
While not an earth-shattering film, Knock Knock is a light weight thriller that is ideal for a late night binge.
Knock Knock begins with two seemingly innocent, stranded young females appear at Evan's (Keanu Reeves) door. Both women, Genesis (Lorenza Izzo) and Bell (Ana de Armas) rouse Evan into helping them and quickly take advantage of his hospitality. The vicious young women seduce, blackmail, assault and murder as they continue with their plan. We are left wondering, will Evan also be killed?
While this movie has elements taken from several other films, it achieves its purpose is providing 99 minutes of suspense. Unlike other reviews, I found Keanu a little different than in past films. His performance was understated, certainly a far cry from the action hero we are used to seeing him in. Also, towards the end, there's a scene where Evan is screaming at the girls. I was happy to see Keanu stretch his emotional performance a little more than normal.
Eli Roth put together a solid, well balanced film. A few laughs, a few tears, a few cringes and a lot of - those girls are crazy moments!
