- The vast, unspoiled Valley of the Wild Roses, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, is the scenery for separate stories of Western life, family drama, and romance. People arrive, leave, and return in search of love(rs), riches, redemption, and revenge.
- Ellen Pitblado is a widow who lives in recluse in 1930s Gloucestershire. When her scummy journalist nephew, Douglas, tries to force her to give him her money, she calls her mysterious lookalike gentlemen friends to her aid.
- Warren Johnson, a devout former teacher, retreated to a desolate farm to mortify himself after killer his wife Milded's assailant, ruling his home and young sons with an iron rod. They take in orphaned cousin Elizabeth 'Lilly' Wright. She falls in love with Clive Bartlets, who plans to build a dam which would inundate the already unprofitable Johnson farm. Clive's investor, banker Graham Parker, falls in unrequited love with Lilly. When they all learn about these conflicting interests, further drama ensues.

On a last long trek trough her beloved Rocky Mountains, Kate has a fall and is saved from a bear by farmer-park ranger Matt Stevens, and falls in love with him.
- In the valley of the wild roses, Abraham 'Abe' Ross is the best rancher, but his only heir, Frederic, prefers to pursue his true talent, music. Neigboring rancher Dick Mills has only a daughter, Cassandra 'Cassie', although given to farming. She falls in love with mysteriously well-educated wandering cowboy Cal Withers and discovers he's the heir of Canada's largest railway corporation. When his ma is dying, she manages to sabotage their love. After Dick gets paralyzed in a fall, the ranch's only hope is for Cassie, who fled city life, to marry her good friend Frederic. Dick's sister Virginia also arrives to take care of him and has an affair with Abe.
