- In 1989, Austrian STAPO agent Fritz Haitzinger headed an operation against the "Engelschoepfung", a radical Opus Dei-like splinter group of the Catholic Church. After being besieged in their hideout for a week, all the radical priests died in a mysterious fire. While investigating a crime scene seven years later, Haitzinger and a senior colleague, Karl Wagner, find out that some of the Engelschoepfung priests actually survived the fire. Haitzinger is afraid that the radical priests might try to take revenge on him and his ex-wife Marlene, with whom he is still very much in love. It doesn't take long until Haitzinger's fears prove accurate.
