- DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.Loved this epic tale. Rarely anything told on this scale nowadays that isn’t in the sci-fi genre. Closest modern-day inheritors to the throne would be shared by Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott. Would love to see this on the big screen someday.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris HemsworthMark RuffaloThe Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.Having assembled a ridiculous large cast for the crossover epic is a feat unto itself, but having done that while serving each of the major MCU groups (intertwining them and letting oddball pairings flourish) while creating a nuanced villain that isn’t just all destroy and conquer. Standouts moments go to Gamora, trio of Thor, Groot and Rocket Racoon, as well as Spider-Man.
- CreatorDavid KajganichMax BorensteinAlexander WooStarsJared HarrisDerek MioTobias MenziesSupernatural, semihistorical, horror anthology series, where each season is inspired by a different infamous or mysterious real life historical tragedy.A stunning survival drama tuned to the horror aesthetics of John Carpenter’s THE THING.
- CreatorMarti NoxonSarah Gertrude ShapiroStarsShiri ApplebyCraig BierkoJeffrey Bowyer-ChapmanA behind-the-scenes look at the chaos surrounding the production of a dating competition program.Camp-tastic and unrelenting crazy in Season 3. Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby have amazing onscreen presence (together and apart).
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable.Gruesomely funny and great at the meta-commentary. Exactly what you wanted and expected.
- DirectorJaime Eliezer KarasStarsAli WongComedian Ali Wong performs her live stand-up set at Toronto's Winter Garden Theatre. So glad her supporting role on American Housewife led me to discover her standup shows.
- CreatorGrant MorrisonBrian TaylorStarsChristopher MeloniRitchie CosterLili MirojnickAn injured hitman befriends his kidnapped daughter's imaginary friend; a perky blue flying unicorn.Such a weird and fun show. Chris Meloni rocks everything he's given.
- CreatorBrian YorkeyStarsDylan MinnetteKatherine LangfordChristian NavarroFollows teenager Clay Jensen, in his quest to uncover the story behind his classmate and crush, Hannah, and her decision to end her life.Season 2. I get the glamorization aspect, but the series tackles subjects that other series and films are too afraid to even approach. Does it need finessing? Sure, but Kate Walsh (among others of the younger cast) are highlights.
- CreatorMindy KalingStarsMindy KalingIke BarinholtzEd WeeksA young Ob/Gyn doctor balances her personal and professional life, surrounded by quirky co-workers in a small office.Season 4-6. Don’t know why I dropped the show for so long, but delighted in the series overall change and level of comedy directly linked to Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) characterization.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMeryl StreepTom HanksSarah PaulsonA cover-up spanning four U.S. Presidents pushes the country's first female newspaper publisher and her editor to join an unprecedented battle between press and government.Solid and efficient seem like inadequate terms to describe a Steven Spielberg film, but I haven’t been taken by his films since his sci-fi Tom Cruise collaborations.
- DirectorPhilip KaufmanStarsDonald SutherlandBrooke AdamsJeff GoldblumWhen strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, replicating the city's residents one body at a time.Classic.
- StarsRuPaulMichelle VisageCarson KressleyNew show will serve up a new twist on the mega-hit RuPaul's Drag Race as it pits queens from previous seasons in a wig-to-wig drag battle royale.Season 3. Somewhat predictable and not enough drama. Morphed in RuPauls Best Friend Race as the more outspoken contestants are voted out for speaking openly.
- StarsJudy HoTim FriedlanderJon Douglas RaineyFor centuries, brilliant minds have changed and shaped the world. But when genius is used for evil, the results are some of the most twisted, inventive, and outrageous crimes in history.Short and sweet.
- DirectorRamin BahraniStarsMichael B. JordanAaron DavisCindy KatzIn a terrifying care-free future, a young man, Guy Montag, whose job as a fireman is to burn all books, questions his actions after meeting a young woman - and begins to rebel against society.Great tweaking and integration of a twitter-esque platform. Jordan and Shannon are fantastic together.
- DirectorMike B. AndersonMatthew NastukStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightWhen Bart falls into a coma after he is struck by lightning, he is visited by ghosts seeking closure.Truly great resurgence and a pitch perfect homage to one of the greatest series finale, Six Feet Under.
- DirectorAdam RobitelStarsLin ShayeLeigh WhannellAngus SampsonParapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier faces her most fearsome and personal haunting yet, as she is drawn back to her ghostly childhood home where the terror began.Lin Shaye, once again, leading a horror franchise that shared in her own origin story. The suitcase sequence is a great example of a horror film playing with the audiences expectations in the well-versed scare tactics.
- CreatorDavid LettermanStarsDavid LettermanKim KardashianGeorge ClooneyComedian David Letterman interviews people he finds fascinating. With Tina Fey.
- CreatorMitchell HurwitzStarsJason BatemanMichael CeraPortia de RossiLevel-headed son Michael Bluth takes over family affairs after his father is imprisoned. But the rest of his spoiled, dysfunctional family are making his job unbearable.Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences. Similar to original Season 4 presentation and actually highlights the strengths of that storytelling experiment. Even if you still wish for more Bluth family drama.
- StarsMa Anand SheelaPhilip ToelkesJane StorkWhen Osho, the world's most controversial guru, builds an Utopian city deep in the Oregon country, conflict with the locals escalates into a national scandal.A little too self-involved.
- DirectorJaime Eliezer KarasStarsAli WongAli Wong's stand up special delves into her sexual adventures, hoarding, the rocky road to pregnancy, and why feminism is terrible.Seeing Ali Wong’s evolution in reverse is a great little teachable moment in learning how to fine tune already great comedy instinct.
- CreatorRoberto Aguirre-SacasaStarsLili ReinhartCamila MendesCole SprouseWhile navigating the troubled waters of romance, school and family, Archie and his gang become entangled in dark Riverdale mysteries.Season 2, part 2. A little off the rails, meaning boring non-murder-related shenanigans, which gives to the great Carrie-musical episode.
- DirectorMark RasoStarsEd HarrisJason SudeikisElizabeth OlsenSet during the final days of the admired photo development system known as Kodachrome, a father and son hit the road in order to reach the Kansas photo lab before it closes its doors for good.Ed Harris. That is all.
- DirectorBen WheatleyStarsTom HiddlestonJeremy IronsSienna MillerLife for the residents of a tower block begins to run out of control.Style and aesthetic filmmaking for days. Charming cast, intriguing story that kind of losses it’s focus in the third act. Everything that leads there is worth it.
- DirectorAntonio CamposStarsRebecca HallMichael C. HallTracy LettsThe story of Christine Chubbuck, a 1970s TV reporter struggling with depression and professional frustrations as she tries to advance her career.Rebecca Hall constantly floors me with her empathetic performances.
- DirectorLaura BrownsonStarsRachel DolezalFranklin DolezalIzaiah DolezalRachel Dolezal becomes a social phenomenon when she passes herself off as an African American and becomes the head of her local N.A.A.C.P. chapter.I mean, okay. She clearly can’t see the reality of herself without removing her rose-tinted glasses.
