Shot-on-Video Horror of the 80′s and 90′s
When the VCR first began making its way into American homes, with it came new prospects that would forever change the way we both consume and produce media. Video stores scrambled to fill their shelves with product, and from this demand was born “shot-on-video” (SOV) horror films. By their nature, horror films are one of the easiest type of film to sell, as they almost always turn a profit due to exploiting human fear as a source of entertainment. Not only was this new medium of video cheaper to shoot with, but by going directly to video store shelves instead of theaters, the content of the films could go completely unregulated. This allowed independent filmmakers an insane level of artistic freedom that gave birth to some of the most bizarre, goriest, and cheesiest films in existence.
WARNING: Because of their unregulated nature, many of these films contain excessive levels of gore and sexuality. It is strongly advised that any viewers with weaker stomachs or conditions that may be effected by this content look up further information on these films prior to viewing. Some of these films are even considered “extreme cinema” due to their graphic, disturbing content. I will mark these particular films with a ☠ after their listing.
This list is fairly comprehensive (though I doubt 100% complete). Because of this, it also includes films that many may find agonizing to sit through for entirely different reasons than gore or nudity. Some of them are just plain boring or terrible. Make your selections carefully. Please note: Films without links to watch them in their entirety are specified in their listings (whether it’s a trailer, a clip, or a review). All films here are in English–or have English subtitles–unless otherwise noted (PERMANENT LINK AVAILABILITY NOT GUARANTEED):
