Art and life are inextricably entangled in Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils, a wildly ambitious, visually intoxicating reinterpretation of the Richard Strauss opera, Salome, that proves to possess almost as many layers as the Biblical princess’ famous dance routine.
After spending the past two and a half decades struggling to get his groove back following the 1997 success of The Sweet Hereafter, the filmmaker reconnects with his pet themes of alienation and family trauma, taking inspiration from his own revisionist staging of the opera, which he remounted for the Canadian Opera Company earlier this year. Using that production as a leap-off point, Egoyan interweaves a behind-the-scenes narrative involving a young director (Amanda Seyfried) who is challenged to put her own stamp on the oft-interpreted material while exorcising a number of personal demons in the process.

The Netflix feature “My Father’s Dragon” is the latest release from Cartoon Saloon, the Irish studio whose traditional, hand-drawn animation has a positively magical effect on its audience. In the case of “My Father’s Dragon,” it had that effect on the people responsible for the film’s score as well.
“The thing about animation is it’s a fantastical, completely created world, so that really takes the guardrails off the music if you’re willing to go there and your director is willing to go there,” “My Father’s Dragon” composer Jeff Danna told IndieWire. His brother and co-composer Mychael Danna added, “Audiences are very sophisticated listeners, especially in live-action films. Everyone has a kind of line in their head where they feel manipulated by the musical score — in our era the line for live-action drama is very different from the line for animation, and I think in this kind of hand-drawn,...

My roundup of the year in cinematic soundtracks is a sonic collage of emotion and sensations, mixed together with both pop and orchestral flourishes. We start off with music from Tár, Todd Field’s return to filmmaking and the story of the renowned conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic (Cate Blanchett). Hildur Guðnadóttir’s concept album features music from within the film and inspired by it, with original pieces alongside beloved works by Elgar and Mahler.Experiencing Memoria at the cinema turned my senses upside down. Here Apichatpong Weerasethakul is in full force, offering a cinematic experience of the sensory. If one were to critique a film based solely on its sonic sensibilities, Memoria achieves the highest embodiment of altered states possible through the marriage of sound and visuals. The realms of human consciousness are Apichatpong's focus and it is through sound design and music that we fall into his world.

This year, a handful of composers have the chance of being double nominated in the score category at the 2023 Oscars.
Composing duo and Nine Inch Nails band members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross could see two nominations this year, for United Artists’ Bones and All, directed by Luca Guadagnino, and Searchlight’s Empire of Light, from Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes. This won’t be the first time the pair landed two score noms: In 2020, they were recognized for Mank and the animated feature Soul (a collaboration with Jon Batiste), the latter winning in the category. It was their second win after they won in 2011 for The Social Network, their first collaboration on a film score.

What are some of the ways that a good film score can elicit a certain emotional response in a film? What film scores did you most admire when you were starting out as a composer? These were some of the secrets revealed by four of today’s top film composers when they joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022/2023 awards contenders: Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch (“Living”), Mychael Danna (“Where the Crawdads Sing”), Danny Elfman (“White Noise”) and Hildur Guðnadóttir (“Women Talking”). “Shells play a central part of the murder mystery as a clue,” reveals Oscar and Emmy-winning composer Mychael Danna (“Life of Pi”) about turning to the distinctly ancient sounds elicited from the natural world. For our recent webchat he adds, “as many of us know, that’s one of the earliest instruments that human beings ever used blowing into shells,” he says. “It sounds primordial and ancient, which it is, as an instrument. It really sounds like the marsh. People have asked me, what is that? Is that a voice? Is it a woodwind? Is it a brass instrument? It’s a seashell being blown. That’s kind of cool that you don’t know what it is, but it feels like the marsh that you’re seeing.” We talked with Danna as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022/2023 awards contenders. Welcome to the return of Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, I invite a guest to discuss an arthouse, foreign, or experimental film of their choice.
For the fourteenth episode, I talked to the editor-in-chief/co-founder of The Film Stage, Jordan Raup, about Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan’s 1994 erotic melodrama Exotica (available on a new Criterion Collection disc and alongside Calendar, The Sweet Hereafter, and The Adjustor on the Criterion Channel).
At first blush, Egoyan’s film defies easy categorization with its recursive structure, multiple central characters, and the director’s own penchant for throwing viewers into previously defined relationships. Exotica’s dizzying construction only amplifies those sensations with the characters’ winding stream-of-consciousness monologues, Dp Paul Sarossy’s furtive camerawork, and Mychael Danna’s Egyptian-influenced score.
The plot isn’t easily described, but it can be distilled down to the intersection...

Cartoon Saloon is very good at this. The Kilkenny-based studio behind “The Secret of Kells” and “Song of the Sea” has emerged as a powerhouse in recent years. Its evocatively rendered 2D films drawing on ancient Celtic imagery — and the traditional storytelling charm that comes with it — sets its work apart from so much of the craven slop that passes for family entertainment in the age of “Lightyear” and “The League of Super-Pets.” If cinema is a crumbling church, the films of Cartoon Saloon are its lovingly crafted stained glass windows.
That much was already made evident by 2020’s astonishing “Wolfwalkers”, but “My Father’s Dragon” might do even more to cement Cartoon Saloon’s role as a necessary counterbalance to the rest of your children’s movie diet. That isn’t because Nora Twomey’s lush — if extremely loose —adaptation of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s 1948 novel represents another creative...

Ruth Stiles Gannett’s 1948 Newbery Honor children’s fantasy novel, My Father’s Dragon, gets Cartoon Saloon treatment in Nora Twomey’s lovingly hand-crafted feature adaptation. Brought to life by a starry voice cast headed by Jacob Tremblay and Gaten Matarazzo as a 10-year-old boy named Elmer and Boris, the dragon with whom he discovers the rewards of friendship and bravery, respectively, the film takes its visual inspiration directly from the original illustrations by the author’s stepmother, Ruth Chrisman Gannett. It lacks the cultural specificity of the Irish animation boutique’s best work, like Wolfwalkers and Song of the Sea, but its retro 2D beauty and lively storytelling should please junior audiences.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Jeff Danna’s score for Julia, which is set for release tomorrow via Watertower Music.
HBO Max’s eight episode comedy series is inspired by Julia Child’s (Sarah Lancashire) extraordinary life and her long-running television series, The French Chef, which pioneered the modern cooking show. Through Julia’s life and her singular joie de vivre, the series explores a pivotal time in American history—the emergence of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural evolution. At its heart, the show is a portrait of a loving marriage with a shifting power dynamic.
One of Danna’s main challenges in his work here was to develop a theme that could speak to both the culinary icon’s spirit, and the series’ “brilliant and warm showcase” of her early years on television.

Also winning on the night were Oliver Masucci as best actor for his performance in Enfant Terrible, and Mr. Bachmann and His Class, which won best documentary. Senta Berger received the lifetime achievement award. I’m Your Man is Germany’s entry to the Oscars this year. Director Schrader recently won an Emmy for her work on Unorthodox.

The route that took Oscar-winning “Life of Pi” composer Mychael Danna from the basement of a Toronto church to an office on Hollywood and Vine and all the way to the stage of Zurich Film Festival, where he will receive a career achievement tribute on Sept. 30, kicked off – as such things often do – with an offhand comment.
It was the mid-1980s and Danna was a student of electronic music at the University of Toronto, paying his way through college by playing organ in local churches and by composing ambient pieces for the nearby planetarium. He’d also score plays on campus, mostly for kicks. Sitting in the sound booth one afternoon, and idly chatting with the neighboring lighting technician, Danna stumbled onto a new path. “My friend told me about another guy from campus who wanted to make a film and was looking for a composer,” Danna says. “That is literally how it happened.

The 17th Zurich Film Festival will host the Swiss premiere of “No Time to Die,” the 25th James Bond film, on Sept. 28. The festival will also stage a retrospective of the other Bond movies starring Daniel Craig.
“We are extremely pleased to be one of the first in the world to show our audience the most recent Bond adventure,” Christian Jungen, Zurich’s artistic director, said. “We fought for months to get this premiere and had to negotiate every last detail with the distribution company Universal. Never before has James Bond been in the official selection of a film festival. I am further pleased that the Zff has succeeded in this coup as it sends out a powerful signal that highlights the importance of cinema. The industry has waited more eagerly for this movie than any other.”

A central theme in Tom McCarthy’s film “Stillwater,” reaching theaters this weekend, is that of culture clash: Oklahoman Bill Baker (Matt Damon) in southern France, visiting his imprisoned daughter (Abigail Breslin) and becoming involved with a French theater actress (Camille Cottin).
That idea extended to the music, composed by Oscar winner Mychael Danna (“Life of Pi”). Danna, whose specialty has long been the authentic application of world-music sounds into film scores, was an obvious choice “because it takes place in Marseille, which is a kind of multi-cultural melting pot,” he says.
The challenge, however, was McCarthy’s direction that the music be “not too specific, culturally, but just the right amount of flavor — something you don’t notice, you just feel.” The intention, Danna says, was for the viewer to experience Marseille and its people “through Bill’s eyes.”
Baker’s middle-American roots suggested country flavors, so Danna assembled...

Since the inception of the Oscars’ Best Animated Feature category in 2001, the race has been utterly dominated by powerhouse American studios—the most notable examples being Walt Disney Studios and its Emeryville subsidiary, Pixar. Having claimed eight Oscars over the last decade, and 13 overall, these studios have become almost insurmountable over time.
This year, they once again pose fierce competition with two titles, the clear frontrunner being Pete Docter and Kemp Powers’ Soul. Meditating on the origins of the human personality, Docter’s follow-up to Oscar winners Up and Inside Out centers on Joe (Jamie Foxx), a frustrated middle-school band teacher, who seeks to return to Earth, after a sudden accident separates him from his body. Striving to return to New York City to realize his dreams of performing as a jazz musician, the character finds that his only way back from the celestial realm known as The Great Before is to mentor a stubborn,...

The Oscars are more international than ever. Of the 11 foreign-language films nominated for Best Picture in 90 years, more than half were nominated post-2000. The motion picture academy has expanded its membership by almost 20 percent, focusing squarely on filmmakers outside the US and people of color.
Last year for example, before the world turned upside down amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and social upheaval, we saw some of that progress come to fruition when underdog Korean masterpiece “Parasite” upended awards prognosticators’ expectations by steamrolling its way through various guild award wins before ultimately triumphing on Oscar night. It vindicated the motion picture academy’s efforts towards moving away from the 2016 #OscarsSoWhite controversy when all 20 of the Oscar acting nominees were exclusively white.
The academy continued its push for exclusivity in June by inviting 819 film professionals to join its ranks and changing eligibility rules to ensure films ticked a number of boxes around diversity and inclusivity.

“This experience was rare for us,” reveals Jeff Danna about composing the music for “Onward” with his brother Mychael Danna. He continues, “You’re often tasked with being inside of people. But you usually don’t see animated elf inversions of your life at various stages.” The brother duo joined us recently for an exclusive webchat (watch the video above).
“Onward” is Pixar’s 22nd animated feature. It tells the story of two elven brothers, Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley (Chris Pratt), on a quest to find a phoenix gem. The gem has the power to reconnect them with their deceased father. Mychael explains, “We lost our father when we were teenagers. And this is the story of losing your father and having your brother as the person you live the rest of your life with.”

“I’m just one who has woken up while the rest of you are still sleeping,” says the servant Balram (Adarsh Gourav) in the first trailer for the Netflix film “The White Tiger.” Based on the prestigious Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name by Aravind Adiga, the film chronicles Balram’s rags-to-riches life story against the backdrop of India’s globalizing economy and political corruption. “The White Tiger” will debut in select theaters in December and drops on the streaming service in January. Watch the teaser trailer above.
Though the opening scenes of the trailer highlight the film’s humor — Balram praises the blatantly poor tennis skills of his master Ashok (Rajkummar Rao), saying he could “represent India in the Olympics” — the tenor changes when Ashok’s wife Pinky Madam (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) asks Balram about his higher aspirations. After experiencing Ashok’s political and personal abuses first-hand, Balram...

If there’s one thing you can bank on when it comes to Pixar, it’s emotion. No matter the story that they’re telling, the animation experts will seek to bring you to tears. It’s one of the reasons why they’ve become the industry leader in making films that, while aimed at kids on the surface, are really speaking to adults. Onward, opening this week, is just the latest example of that. Children will see a romp with creative designs, while grown ups will be wrecked by the emotional message at its core. It’s another one of Pixar’s top notch efforts, starting off the year with a definite Best Animated Feature contender. The film is an animated adventure, steeped in fantasy and magic. Long ago, the world was filled with magic, but as modern technology came into play, that was cast aside for convenience. We...

Bmi announced Wednesday that the performing right organization’s most visible executive in the Hollywood community, Doreen Ringer-Ross, has been elevated to a newly created position, vice president of creative relations, reflecting further programs and events she’s expected to spearhead as she continues to be the top liaison with film and TV composers.
Her former job isn’t going away. Bmi has given Ringer-Ross’ former title, VP of creative for film, TV & visual media, to the newly appointed Natalie Baartz. The org says Baartz will take on the day-to-day duties of that department and work closely with Ringer-Ross.
Both will report to Alex Flores, senior VP of creative at Bmi. “What has set Doreen apart in this competitive industry is her ability to recognize and nurture opportunities,” said Flores in a statement. “Her new role, which she identified as a need for the department and Bmi, is just another example of that vision.

It would take more explaining than the film merits to articulate why deep-fried rabbit ears are briefly a plot point in “Guest of Honour,” but so they are: The camera grazes over a platter of the oval-shaped delicacies, looking invitingly golden-crumbed and crunchy, and for a second any reservations you might have about the unusual menu item fall away. , in which a frayed father-daughter bond yields all manner of secondary indiscretions and traumas over a wildly careering 15-year timeframe. Incorporating stray narrative and thematic elements from Egoyan’s earlier (and far better) films into an odd kind of self-pastiche, this unwelcome “Guest” serves only to remind viewers how the director’s gifts have withered.
An Atom bomb even by his unreliable recent standards, “Guest of Honour” does, however, extend Egoyan’s mystifying run of major European competition berths for shaky genre pieces of limited artistic ambition. While the combination of...

The question that looms over every attempt to remake an existing film is a simple one: “What’s the point?”
If a film is good enough to inspire a remake, after all, doesn’t that mean it exists quite nicely on its own, and doesn’t need somebody else trying to do it all over again?
And if the point of the new version is to change things about the original, don’t you run the risk of losing some of the elements that made the first film special?
Director Bart Freundlich, whose remake of Susanne Bier’s 2006 drama “After the Wedding” was the first film to screen on the opening night of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, clearly knows and has thought about those questions.

Equally adept at original content and sequels, Pixar is truly the major force in animation these days. A powerhouse with Academy Awards and billions of dollars at the box office to their credit, they largely can do no wrong. This month, they’ll put out one of their highest profile sequels ever in Toy Story 4, but after that, the studio has said they’re doubling down on original ideas. Well, they’ve released a Teaser Trailer for one of those, next year’s epic from them, Onward. Will Pixar have another hit on their hands? You can see the Teaser for the film at the end of the post, but spoiler alert: they will. The movie is Pixar’s 2020 animated effort, centering on a fantastical world. The official plot synopsis from IMDb is as follows: “Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot,...

Late-December release “On the Basis of Sex” has received limited Oscar buzz, but the 1970s-set biopic starring Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg has the makings of the Best Picture nominee that nobody sees coming. The Supreme Court justice has already taken this awards season by storm, having been seen on the big screen earlier in 2018 in “Rbg.” That box office sleeper hit is one of the top contenders in the Best Documentary Feature race, winning at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards and expected to receive a couple of Oscar nominations. Ginsburg is widely considered a national hero and pop culture icon, and her recent health scares have put liberals (probably including members of the motion picture academy) on edge. Such sympathy could manifest in votes for her scripted biopic too.

Those predisposed to emotional manipulation by dogs at play and in peril will be easily swayed by director Charles Martin Smith’s “A Dog’s Way Home.” Based on the bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, this story about a lost dog attempting a 400-mile journey home takes us on an emotional roller coaster, most of it with a lump in our throats. However, for every shameless trick the filmmakers employ to pluck our heartstrings, resonant chords are struck elsewhere, teaching audiences about family, the power of unconditional love, and the ripple effects of compassion. In the pantheon of puppy pictures, this doesn’t rank as top dog, but it’s certainly not the runt of the litter either.

Right off the bat, it’s important to know for this review that I’m a dog owner. In fact, as I wrote this, my six year old mutt is sleeping mere feet from me. I tell you that to let you know that the manipulation found within A Dog’s Way Home worked on me, almost without fail. The movie is a family friendly animal adventure, but one that made me cry on about a half dozen separate occasions. There are happy tears to be found, sad tears, you name it. By the time the flick had come to an end, I was a total mess. The film is an adventure suitable for the whole family, whether they have two legs or four. We follow a puppy (internal monologue provided by Bryce Dallas Howard) as she goes from a young stray to a beloved family pet. Found with a...
