The BBC has defended upcoming show Britain's Hardest Grafter, which has attracted complaints and a change.org petition signed by tens of thousands of people calling for it to be axed.
Producers Twenty Twenty and the broadcaster have issued a joint statement countering criticisms of the show, which has not yet started shooting.
"Britain's Hardest Grafter is a current affairs commission and not an entertainment format, and is at the very earliest stages of production," read the statement.
"The welfare of those taking part is of paramount importance and it is a misinterpretation of the concept of the series to suggest it is exploitative."
Controller of BBC Two and BBC Four Kim Shillinglaw first announced the commission in January, when it was called Britain's Hardest Worker.
Shillinglaw said at the time that the programme would be "looking at the low wage economy".

Former Good Day La anchor Dorothy Lucey today made a visit to rival Ktla Morning news, addressing her dismissal from Kttv, where her contract was not renewed after 17 years co-hosting the Fox station’s morning show with Jillian Reynolds and Steve Edwards. Lucey also spoke about her new project, a talk show produced by American Idol‘s Nigel Lythgoe. The talk show, Good News Girls, which Lythgoe is now shopping, features five prominent Los Angeles female anchors — Wendy Burch, Pat Harvey, Christine Devine, Lucey and Ana Garcia — who have a charity of the same name. The five would cover all sorts of topics on the show, including charity.

Update: A spokesperson for Kttv has confirmed our report, including Dorothy Lucey’s departure. Her last day will be Friday. Exclusive: Longtime Good Day La co-anchor Dorothy Lucey will be leaving the morning program of Los Angeles’ Fox-owned station Kttv. I hear Lucey’s contract was not renewed and her last day will be later this week, possibly on Friday. Additionally, Lucey’s co-anchor Jillian Reynolds will switch from a full-time Kttv employee to freelance status. She will continue in her current duties on Good Morning La but not always five days a week. The move is mutually beneficial for the station, as Reynolds commands a big salary, and for Reynolds, as she can pursue freely her extracurricular activities such as sponsorship deals and events. Good Day La‘s third co-anchor, veteran Steve Edwards, is locked into a long-term contract. A Kttv spokesperson could not reached for comment. Good Day...

Dermot Mulroney is the latest love interest "New Girl" has brought in to woo Zooey Deschannel's character Jess. Mulroney plays a wealthy older banker named Russell Schiller, whose daughter is Jess's student. And as Mulroney told "Good Day La," (weekdays, 9 a.m. Pt on Fox) his character's age and socioeconomic status have thus far prevented him from fully integrating into the gang.
"Well I think they did the best they could to incorporate me into their group, but I was more of a radical splinter group to that core," he quipped.
Mulroney praised the quality of the show's production. "It's a unique experience, in particular how they shoot this show ... It's a single camera sitcom, so you go outside and see wind blowing their hair, so it's real. So it has that other quality," he said. When Jillian Reynolds brought up a "Friends" guest spot he made years ago, Mulroney contrasted the different styles.

Heather Dubrow, the newest addition to "The Real Housewives of Orange County" cast, stopped "Good Day La" (weekdays, 7 a.m. Pst on Fox) Tuesday to visit with her old friends, Steve Edwards and Jillian Reynolds. Dubrow first met the "Gdla" team back in the 90's, when she was still Heather Paige Kent, a struggling actress who appeared in many short-lived sitcoms such as "Jenny", "Stark Raving Mad" and "That's Life."
Edwards, who is very open about his disdain for the "Housewives" franchise, seemed surprised that Dubrow joined the show, and after watching a clip of a conversation between Dubrow and fellow "Housewife" Alexis Bellino, asked her if she was perhaps too smart to relate to her co-stars. Dubrow answered carefully. "I'll let you form your own opinion about that," she said, but added that the women don't seem to get her humor.
A clip from Tuesday night's episode reinforced the disconnect.

Last week, the news broke that "True Blood" star Ryan Kwanten will be guest-starring on the Valentine's Day episode of "New Girl" as Zooey Deschanel's love interest. Friday on "Good Day La," Kwanten explained the surprisingly simple manner in which the cameo was born.
"I was very much a fan of the show anyway, so I sort of reached out to them through my agent, and said, 'Listen, if there was ever an opportunity to ever get on the show, I'd love to be able to work with Zoe ... She is the cutest," he explained. After Steve Edwards was surprised at the simplicity of how it all came together, Kwanten had to acknowledge that his other gig helped his effort considerably. "I guess being on 'True Blood' adds a little bit of cachet," he admitted.

Perhaps a move like appearing on "Good Day La" (weekdays, 9Am Pt on Fox) to discuss how she felt ambushed in Part 1 of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Reunion" was what Kyle Richards was referring to when she said being friends with Lisa Vanderpump is "like playing chess with Bobby Fischer." Or maybe she was just defending herself from a barrage of attacks.
Nevertheless, Vanderpump speculated that the dynamic on display at the reunion may have emerged because she was "out of the loop," busy planning her daughter's wedding and opening a new restaurant, while the other ladies were getting on the same page. When Steve Edwards joked that the other Housewives had "ganged up and planned" a bad day for Vanderpump, she not only agreed, but also elaborated on the conspiracy theory. "Adrienne did say to Brandi, 'Oh, let's meet the night before,' and Brandi declined. I know that for a fact,...

Martin Sheen, who has been both honored and arrested protesting on behalf of humanitarian causes, found out where his passionate sense of social justice came from in the Season 3 premiere of "Who Do You Think You Are?" Thursday on "Good Day La" (weekdays, 9 a.m. Pst on Fox), Sheen talked about the insights he gained about his ancestry from participating in the show.
Sheen told host Steve Edwards about an uncle from his Irish mother's side of the family who fought for Ireland's independence and later in the country's civil war. He also discovered a Spanish uncle from his father's side who opposed the dictator Francisco Franco and was sentenced to life in prison in Pamplona, Spain. "I had no idea from whence I came," Sheen said. "I don't think my father knew a lot of the history I discovered doing "Who Do You Think You Are?"

When "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Kyle Richards began her interview with "Good Day La" (weekdays, 7 a.m. Est on Fox) by whining about some negative tweets she received after a recent episode, host Steve Edwards couldn't help himself. "If you have the ... narcissistic gall to put yourself on a reality show and you don't expect to get killed on the Internet, you're in the wrong business," he told her.
"Well, I guess I do expect, but sometimes it's very hurtful. I think that sometimes people see me as someone that I'm not, and that's what hurts me," Richards responded.
When Edwards followed up and asked if she ever regrets putting her entire life on TV for public consumption Richards just sold, she said that she did. "Absolutely," she said. "Just with a reality show there's a lot of negativity sometimes ... people dissecting my relationship with my sister Kim...

Max Greenfield plays Schmidt on Fox's new hit sitcom, 'New Girl,' but he's cool being known as Zooey Deschanel's TV roommate. When he stopped by 'Good Day La' (weekdays, 9Am Pt on Fox), all the 'Good Day La' crew wanted to talk about was the adorkable Zooey, and Greenfield was totally fine with it.
Steve Edwards tried to get a rise out of Greenfield by saying, "When she was here, she said she was the only reason" the show's a hit. But Greenfield didn't bite. "Well look, I'm not going to argue with that," he said. Although he's also had recurring roles on Fox's other hit shows 'Ugly Betty' and 'Veronica Mars,' he's grateful for 'New Girl';s success. "Everyone involved knows how seldom that happens," he said.

Steve Edwards, anchor of 'Good Day La' (weekdays, 9Am Pt on Fox) is a big fan of 'The Glades.' In an interview on Wednesday, he told 'Glades' star Matt Passmore that he'd seen every episode of the show, and gushed about the characters and their relationships, especially the chemistry between Passmore's Jim Longworth and Kiele Sanchez's Callie Cargill.
Passmore said 'Glades' creator and writer Clifton Campbell had written the relationship between Longworth and Cargill to be complex. "Most television, especially procedurals, work on just a simmering tension," he said. "Ours isn't so much about tension but about obstacles. So already it's, you know, guy meets girl, guy finds out that girl is married to a guy in prison, has a child, and all the complexities that come with that."

A group of artists, including group Girls Aloud, are scheduled to record a charity anthem for a campaign against knife crimes in London. The project will also include singer Steve Edwards and some world champion athletes, such as boxers Johnny Nelson and Junior Witter.
The collaboration which will be named under U.K. Flow, is expected to contribute in the fund raiser program, conducted by a number of knife crime charity organizations. The song is initiated by Stephen Nicholas, an actor who starred in a British television series "Dream Team".
Commenting on his motive, Nicholas says that he genuinely wants to raise awareness about knife crime and its consequences for a number of victims who have been stabbed to death across the country. "We just want to raise awareness. We haven't got any ulterior motive, our only motive is to stop kids dying," he explains.
