‘The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die’ (2023). Netflix Movie: epic, yes, without being spectacular
The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die is a movie directed by Edward Bazalgettestarring Alexander Dreymon, Mark Rowley and Arnas Fedaravicius.
It is based on the novel by Bernard Cornwell.
As it is becoming usual in well-known series, Netflix gives us this story that, set in The Las Kingdom, will delight the fans who enjoy the series and its great plot.
Historical novels are a hit, and thanks to authors like Bernard Cornwell, the quality of their plots and arguments were assured. Moreover, readers loved them and The Last Kingdom is a great example of this.
The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die (2023)
After Vikings, this story of Saxons and Vikings was a success in its serial format and now it comes as a two-hour episode that can be watched independently, but that you will enjoy much more if you are fans of the excellent TV series.
Is it the spectacle we were hoping?...

Set mostly in England, back before it was officially called England — and centuries before Great Britain was so much as a glint in the eye of James I — director Ed Bazalgette’s workmanlike historical epic “The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die” wraps up the events of “The Last Kingdom,” the Netfix drama series based on Bernard Cornwell’s “Saxon Tales” novels. Playing like “Game of Thrones” with more history and fewer dragons, the film opens with several smaller kingdoms, including Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia, gearing up for a power struggle exacerbated by the recent death of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, and worsened by the surreptitious attempts of the Danes to sow discord.
The hero of the hour is Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), a young Saxon and the protagonist of the TV series, who fans will know was raised by Danes after a Danish attack wiped out most...

There's lots of great stuff hitting streaming this week, but the debut of the Netflix film "Seven Kings Must Die" and the return of HBO Max's fourth season of "Titans" are two guaranteed to deliver high-intensity action. Fans looking to pair brutal historical epics with their watch of "Seven Kings Must Die" need to look no further than Robert Egger's Shakespearean Viking epic "The Northman" on Prime Video or Neil Marshall's Romans-vs-Picts action-adventure film "The Centurion," available on more than half a dozen streaming services. For those looking for something less bloody and closer tied to "Titans," there's always the Superman origin story series "Smallville," streaming on Hulu, or if you want to get really vintage, there's the young adult shapeshifting series "Animorphs," streaming on Prime Video. There's no shortage of action and adventure available on streaming this week, so let's get to it.

French pay TV group Canal+ has ordered a second season of its dazzling historical drama “Marie Antoinette.” BAFTA-nominated Ed Bazalgette will direct the first four episodes.
While Deborah Davis (“The Favourite”) still on board as creator, season 2’s writing team is led by Louise Ironside, joined by Charlotte Wolf, Francesca Forristal and Andrew Bambfield.
The series, which is being backed by Banijay and Newen, is expected to start filming in the fall. The new season will continue telling the epic story of the avant-garde young queen, played by Emilia Schüle (“Ku’damm 56/ 63”), with Louis Cunningham (“Bridgerton”) as the king of France, Louis XVI.
Commissioned by Canal+’s Creation Originale unit, the upcoming season will portray how the royal couple at their height of their power faced an unprecedented financial crisis. The incessant attacks of Provence and Chartres against the royal couple stirred up the hatred of the nobles while disastrous consequences.

Netflix has released the first trailer for Seven Kings Must Die, a movie which continues the story of The Last Kingdom.
The Last Kingdom aired its fifth and final season on Netflix last year, but series producer Nigel Marchant said that while the last season of the show was meant to “fully conclude the series, there was always one more story that we wanted to tell,” leading to the announcement of the movie in 2021.
Alexander Dreymon stars in Seven Kings Must Die as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who “must ride once more across a fractured kingdom with several of the series’ much-loved returning characters, as they battle alongside, and against, new allies and enemies. Following the death of King Edward, a battle for the crown ensues, as rival heirs and invaders compete for power. And when an alliance comes seeking Uhtred’s help in their plans, Uhtred faces a choice between those he cares for most,...

“The Last Kingdom” followup film “Seven Kings Must Die” has set its premiere date at Netflix, Variety has learned exclusively.
The film will debut on the streamer on April 14. In addition, Netflix has released first-look images from the film, which can be seen above and below.
“It has been such an honor to be part of telling this story for all these years,” said series star and executive producer Alexander Dreymon. “As an actor, I have been so challenged and gratified by the privilege of playing Uhtred. Hanging up Uhtred’s sword after filming ‘Seven Kings’ felt, ironically, heavy – even though I know that our tale has reached its conclusion. As an EP on the show, I could not be more proud of the hundreds of people who spent thousands of hours to make the best product possible. As for our loyal fans…what can I say? You are the...

The second season of Netflix’s The Witcher is currently going through the very early stages of pre-production, so there isn’t a lot to share with fans. Though as development picks up speed, we’re sure to get tidbits of information on the cast and crew.
The new live-action adaptation of The Witcher saga has so far received universal recognition and become one of the biggest debuts on Netflix. Fans simply can’t get enough of Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia and they’re patiently waiting for more. Unfortunately, though, the second season may not arrive until 2021, so the streaming juggernaut plans to fill the void by releasing a new anime film set in the world of the Continent.
Meanwhile, a new report has just revealed two directors for the upcoming run and they have many successful credits attached to their names. Edward Bazalgette, known for his work on Doctor Who,...

It’s testament to Doctor Who that, even though it’s been 12 months since we’ve had a new episode of the show, it was back in its stride within a minute or two of its latest adventure. With just one of two references throughout linking it back to last year’s Christmas special – The Husband Of River Song – and a few hints at what’s to come (more Osgood, in some guise, for a start), The Return Of Doctor Mysterio turned out to be a pretty standalone episode. Here's our spoiler-free look at this year's Doctor Who Christmas special...
A delight, this. The Return Of Doctor Mysterio is that rarest of Doctor Who Christmas specials, in that Christmas is barely in it. It certainly takes place at Christmas, but this time around it’s more a background feature. The lashings of snow, the assorted Santas and snowmen, and the jingly Yuletide music are notable by their absence. A fun gag near the start, and the festive stuff is pretty much done with.
In place of overt Christmassy stuff? A Doctor Who homage of sorts to comic book movies, and plenty of them. Its cards are laid on the table pre-credits with some hand-drawn panels, and within ten minutes, you can start notching up the nods to Iron Man and Ninja Turtles, and the clear love that Steven Moffat – on scripting duties for his seventh festive...

Highwaymen, cat people and Winston Churchill. Here are the geeky bits and pieces we noted in Doctor Who's The Woman Who Lived...
The Woman Who Lived is a fascinating episode of Doctor Who, filled with philosophical discussions and ruminations on the nature of immortality. In truth, on first viewing we weren’t sure there’d be very much to write about in this column this week. However, as a great man once said, ‘life finds a way’. So here are all of the callbacks, similarities and tenuous-but-interesting geeky things we spotted in this week’s episode. If we’ve missed any, make your way to the all-important comments section below!

Doctor Who series 9 is still refusing to be pinned down, and offers yet another left turn in Catherine Tregenna's The Woman Who Lived...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
9.6 The Woman Who Lived
“You mean… you haven’t come for me?”
Readers of a certain age may well have indulged in the computer game of The Hobbit once upon a time. It was a text adventure, released in the early 1980s, and I always came a cropper when I happened upon the pale bulbous eyes.
You'll forgive me, then, for shining eyes coming out of the darkness still managing to unnerve me in film and TV shows, and the few moments where The Woman Who Lived opted to creep me out hit pretty much every time.
The Woman Who Lived is a surprising episode, though, that resists being tonally pinned down by the...

A big stack of shiny new pictures has been released for Doctor Who's series 9 follow-up to The Girl Who Died, The Woman Who Lived...
Hot on the heels of Maisie Williams' first appearance in Doctor Who, in last weekend's The Girl Who Died, comes her second, The Woman Who Lived. And here are the pictures, courtesy of the BBC, to prove it. Thirty-six of them in fact, which, by our calculations, seems just shy of releasing the entire episode in flip-book form.
Torchwood's Catherine Tregenna has written this one, with Ed Bazalgette repeating his directing duties from The Girl Who Died. Williams stars alongside Rufus Hound, Ariyon Bakare and more.
Here's the official BBC synopsis:
"England, 1651. The deadly Highwayman ‘The Nightmare’ and his sidekick stalk the dark streets of London. But when they find loot that’s not of this world, they come face to face with the Doctor.

Doctor Who, Series 9, Episode 5, “The Girl Who Died”
Written by Jamie Mathieson and Steven Moffat
Directed by Ed Bazalgette
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
Doctor Who has had a solid run since Peter Capaldi stepped in as the Twelfth Doctor, with some creative ideas from the writers, a bigger emphasis on visual style from the directors, and strong performances from Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the lead roles. However, for this Whovian (and as I discussed recently on Debating Doctor Who), no episode has fully come together, with each element of the show working at its peak to make a whole greater than its parts, as happens in the very best of each Doctor’s stories. With “The Girl Who Died”, that finally changes; the Twelfth Doctor at last has an indicative episode, a story that highlights the very best of this Doctor and the current version of the series.

So we’ve finally come to the Maisie Williams episode of Doctor Who, and what an event it turns out to be. The Girl Who Died may be the most important episode of season nine with The Doctor maybe making the biggest mistake he’s ever made…
When The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) find themselves captured by Vikings, this is the least of their problems as they soon go to war on an alien posing as Odin. As they prepare for the war, can The Doctor save them or are they doomed to fail?
Where the last few episodes seemed to trivialise things such as danger, The Girl Who Died brings it right back into context in an impressive way. As expected Maisie Williams is very good in her role and is important to the story, and next week’s episode. To say too much about what...

She’s got armor and a shield, but where’s Needle?
Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams has traded Winterfell for Old Norse times — but as the accompanying trailer and first-look photos show, she’s still playing a tough cookie on this Saturday’s installment of Doctor Who (9/8c on BBC America).

In the first of a two-part story, “the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) must train a useless band of Vikings” — including Williams’ plucky Ashildre — to “defend themselves against the galaxy’s most deadly army,” according to the network.

The Girl Who Died raises more questions than it answers, not least of which is the story behind Maisie Williams' mysterious character...
Well, crikey.
The Girl Who Died is the first story in this run of Doctor Who to have a co-writer credit, and that, in my mind, usually (but not always) hints at something else going on besides the front and centre story. After all, on the one hand, you've got Jamie Mathieson - back after last year's triumphant Flatline and Mummy On The Orient Express - and on the other, there's Steven Moffat.
Turns out it's quite a combination. For in The Girl Who Died, there might just be quite a lot going on.
Once again, it's the opening episode of a two parter, and this one - giving absolutely nothing away - has the kind of cliffhanger that's going to open up no shortage of speculation.

For those who went to cinemas on the 15th of September 2015 to see the 3-D showings of the two-part Series 8 finale, Dark Water and Death in Heaven, there was a six and a half minute treat at the end. After being exhorted to remove their 3-D glasses, fans were treated to the much-anticipated Series 9 Prequel, The Doctor’s Meditation.
This short film was directed by Ed Bazalgette and written by Steven Moffat, and it acted as a prequel leading into the first episode of the new series, “The Magician’s Apprentice”. The prequel was shown in Russian, Canadian, Danish and Us cinemas, but nowhere else – including the UK! So, as it turned out, very few Doctor Who fans got to see it!
So, what’s the Prequel like? Well, don’t read any further if you dislike spoilers! But, if you want to know what happens and can’t...

Doctor Who series 9 with Peter Capaldi arrives in September, which gives us plenty of time to speculate over this first trailer...
"I'm the Doctor, and I save people"
So. The trailer.
In the dead of night (and the slightly more alive of day over the Atlantic at this year's Sdcc), the BBC released a ninety-second trailer for Doctor Who series 9.
It showed Missy, Clara, a Zygon, Maisie Williams, a creature with two faces, and Peter Capaldi's Doctor headlining space Glastonbury or some such and wanting to kiss things to death.
See for yourself, here:
Obviously we knew Clara, Missy and the Zygons were back, and we knew Maisie Williams was in the show but we didn’t know she was apparently ‘back’ as well. What this actually means, we can only speculate.
The trailer for the new series of Doctor Who tantalised us with a feast of monsters and new Peter Capaldi memes.

Ahead of Series 9, the BBC and “Doctor Who” are asking, “What’s that in the shadows?” The subject of that query was fans' first look at a brand-new alien creature, albeit hidden in shadows. Well, it looks kind of like a metal trashcan with a space heater inside of it but what do I know? Image Credit: BBC via RadioTimes I wasn't the only one squinting (and adjusting tones in Photoshop) to make out any details in the vaguely named "Block 3 Monster." Rather than ruin our collective eyesight, the BBC released a much better look at the creature. Image Credit: BBC via RadioTimes. In broad daylight, s/he looks a Big Daddy prototype from the "Bioshock" video game series mated with a Yo Gabba Gabba creature. It could be a coincidence. Or it could be another send up to a fellow sci-fi franchise. After all, Garrus Vakarian of "Mass Effect" showed up last season.

21 year old Eleanor Tomlinson (represented by Conway Van Gelder Grant) is set to play Demelza opposite Aidan Turner in the new BBC adaptation of the 18th Century saga set in Cornwall, Poldark.
Eleanor, who has been acting since her early teens was in teen comedy Angus, Thongs And Perfect Snogging, and went on to star opposite Nicholas Hoult in Jack The Giant Slayer. She's recently been seen in two BBC period dramas - The White Queen and Death Comes to Pemberley.
She said of the role:
"I am very excited to have been asked to play Demelza in the BBC’s new adaptation of these classic novels. I am conscious of the fact that the original series had a huge following and was tremendously popular, all I can promise is that I will do my utmost to do justice to the spirit of Winston Graham’s iconic character."

Aidan Turner — Poldark
Aidan Turner (Being Human) will take on the titular role in a brand new adaptation of Winston Graham’s Poldark. Filming commences this Spring for the drama which is being produced by Mammoth Screen (Endeavour) for BBC1. Debbie Horsfield has adapted the novels for the small screen while Ed Bazalgette (The Guilty, Endeavour) will direct the series.
An initial season of eight 60-minute episodes will air in early 2015. The new version of Poldark will make its television debut precisely 40 years after Robin Ellis first appeared onscreen as the title character in the BBC’s previous version of the show. Mammoth Screen will be hoping that the new version of Poldark is as successful as the previous one which was a hit in over 40 countries and was voted one as one of PBS Masterpiece’s top ten shows of all time.

Aidan Turner, who played vampire Mitchell in BBC Three's Being Human, will star as Ross Poldark in a new BBC adaptation of Winston Graham’s acclaimed saga set in 18th century Cornwall.
Described as a man of contradictions, Ross Poldark has a strong sense of social justice but a contempt for authority. He’s a man of principle yet frequently a rebel. Reckless yet full of integrity. Charismatic but down-to-earth. Volatile yet fiercely loyal. Torn between two women and two social classes. A hero to most, a scourge to many.
Britain is in the grip of a chilling recession... falling wages, rising prices, civil unrest - only the bankers are smiling. It's 1783 and Ross Poldark returns from the American War of Independence to his beloved Cornwall to find his world in ruins: his father dead, the family mine long since closed, his house wrecked and his sweetheart pledged to marry his cousin.

Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on PBS
Television is flush with mysteries, quirky detectives who don’t play nice with authority, and period dramas. So how is that a show which mixes all three of these themes works so exceptionally well? For one thing Endeavour takes a beloved character, cranky opera loving Detective Inspector Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans), and imagines him as a young handsome, brilliant but sometimes sullen character that’s frequently squeamish at crime scenes.
Based on a series of books by Colin Dexter it is a prequel to the wildly popular long running Inspector Morse series. After a successful one episode run that aired in 2012 the series was commissioned for a first season currently airing on PBS’ Masterpiece Mystery for the next four weeks.
