On "Star Trek: Enterprise," the character of Ensign Hoshi Sato, played by actress Linda Park, served as the communications officer on board the titular ship. "Enterprise" takes place a century before the events of the original "Star Trek" series, so the franchise's notorious universal translator hadn't yet been refined, leaving human translators like Hoshi to fill in the gaps. Hoshi had a talent for xenolinguistics, but didn't quite have the constitution for long-range space missions or combat situations. She was young and inexperienced, and had to constantly face her anxieties head-on. As the show progressed, Hoshi came into her own, displaying more and more confidence.
The problem with characters that can be defined as "young and inexperienced" is that eventually they will have to become adult and experienced. They will then require other character traits to define them ... and TV writers don't always think that far ahead. Many of the...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds renewed for season 4 but Star Trek: Lower Decks will end with season 5
Good news for Captain Christoper Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise as Variety reports that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for season 4. Unfortunately, the crew of the USS Cerritos aren’t quite so lucky as it was also announced that Star Trek: Lower Decks will conclude with its upcoming fifth season.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently in production on its third season, which will premiere on Paramount+ in 2025. “On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds,’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said executive producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers and executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.” Strange New Worlds has been a big success for Paramount+, quickly becoming a fan...

This article contains spoilers for The Orville, Star Trek: The Original Series, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Featuring broad comedy and characters who don’t seem to be taking their jobs very seriously, the first trailer for The Orville suggested that the Fox series would be a spoof of Star Trek.
In said trailer, Captain Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) tries to eat a marble and asks an alien to move over so he is framed better in the viewscreen. Lt. Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes) drinks beer while on duty, flying a shuttle, at 9:15 a.m. Commander Kelly Grayson’s (Adrianne Palicki) former marriage to Mercer is treated to rather stale “comic” arguments about going to therapy. Mercer’s reaction to Lt. Commander Bortus’s (Peter Macon) species being entirely male is to observe, with truly cutting and original wit, that they probably don’t have many arguments about leaving the toilet seat up.

It's worth recalling that "Star Trek: Enterprise" is one of the less popular "Star Trek" shows. "Enterprise" debuted in late September 2001, and was set about a century before the events of the original "Star Trek" series. It followed the adventures of the very first human vessel sent on a long-range space voyage, and took place at a time when a lot of familiar "Star Trek" technologies/notions hadn't been invented yet; there were no tractor beams, no shields, no human-safe transporters, and no Prime Directive. "Enterprise" clearly wanted to revive the old-world frontiersmanship so familiar to fans of the 1966 series.
"Enterprise," however, only lasted four seasons; the three previous Trek shows ran for seven years each. The series was canceled in 2005, and, at the time, it seemed like "Star Trek" was pretty much over and done with. Some might credit the show's writing as a culprit for its unpopularity; it...

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has brought back some classic characters from the franchise by recasting them with new actors. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is finally helming his own show, with Spock (Ethan Peck) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) serving in his crew. Future Captain Jim Kirk (Paul Wesley) has become a recurring face, while the season 2 finale, "Hegemony," introduced a young Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn). But if actor John Billingsley has his way, Doctor Phlox could return in "Strange New Worlds" without the need for recasting.
Billingsley played Phlox on "Star Trek: Enterprise" — he was the chief medical officer of the Nx-01, the first Starfleet spaceship named "Enterprise." A Denobulan, Phlox looked human-ish (except for the serrated ridges on the side of his head), but his alien anatomy was, well, rather alien indeed.

Production on the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently underway, and one former Star Trek cast member has an idea of how they could be brought back. John Billingsley played Dr. Phlox on Star Trek: Enterprise, and although Strange New Worlds takes place a hundred years after Enterprise, he notes that nothing has been established regarding the lifespans of Denobulans.
“I was on the strike line and some of the Strange New Worlds guys were coming up and saying ‘How long do you think Denobulans live?’” Billingsley told TrekMovie. “I said ‘Long. Long, long, long. Definitely long enough to be on your show if that’s what you’re getting at.’ So who knows? I mean, I would happily come back. And I figure, hell, even if I’m dead, my son Phlox Jr. is still around, and he is the spitting image of his old pop.

Spoilers for "Star Trek: Lower Decks" follow.
Season 4 of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" has featured a mysterious ship destroying ships belonging to every alien race in the Alpha Quadrant, from Klingons to Romulans — or has it? The latest episode, "A Few Badgeys More," revealed the ships are actually being disabled and towed away (while also clearing our suspect list). However, the episode's cold opening gave us yet another scene of a ship ambush. This one belonged to an alien race we haven't seen in "Star Trek" since "The Next Generation" — the Bynars.
They're a demure, purple-skinned, and genderless race. Their name is also a reference to "binary code." The Bynars operate in pairs, finishing each others' sentences when they speak English. Their preferred mode of communication, though, is an unintelligible (to human ears) high-pitched cooing that sounds like words being filtered through a fast-forward button.
Why do the Bynars function this way?...

Angel Studios, the outfit behind one of summer’s biggest hits, Sound of Freedom, will release its next film and first original, The Shift, in theaters Dec. 1.
The sci-fi thriller stars Neal McDonough, Sean Astin, Kristoffer Polaha, Liz Tabish (The Chosen), Paras Patel (The Chosen) and Rose Reid.
It was written and directed by Brock Heasley for producer Ken Carpenter’s Nook Lane Entertainment.
“The Shift is a bold project that defies labels and is unlike anything in the market,” said Jeffrey Harmon, Angel’s chief content officer. He said Heasley came up with the concept eight years ago and made a short film for $500, eventually joining forces with faith-based Angel to crowdfund and produce a feature.

Since its debut in 1966, Star Trek has boldly gone to nearly every cultural aspect of modern life. The franchise has included 13 feature films with various crews, numerous board and video games, hundreds of action figures, commemorative plates — you name it, and there’s probably a version with a Starfleet logo on it.
But despite all this exploration into other media and fields, Star Trek remains best on television. And after a long drought, the franchise is finally thriving again in its original medium, despite the bumbling of its parent company Paramount. Even with Picard done and Discovery entering its fifth and final season, multiple series are still in production, including the acclaimed Strange New Worlds.
But as the greatest Trek theme song reminds us, it’s been a long road getting from there to here. The Original Series was canceled after a budget-strapped third season in 1969 and only built its following in syndication.

The final episode of the second season of "Star Trek: Enterprise" and the first episode of its third season -- titled "The Expanse" and "The Xindi", respectively -- centered on a new "Star Trek" story arc about a mysterious spherical probe that appears over Earth and unleashed a deadly energy beam that destroys the state of Florida and kills seven million people. The attackers did not identify themselves, and Earth was not at war. This terrorist incident changed the course of the series, and Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) was assigned a revenge-based military mission to track down the assailants and bring them to justice. It was very clearly a metaphor for 9/11, an event that "Enterprise" was always living in the shadow of.
Previously adhering to a more traditional drama-of-the-week structure, "Enterprise" dramatically shifted gears, diving into a season-long story arc. Some Trekkies found the shift to be exciting new territory for "Enterprise,...

A well-known piece of trivia among Trekkies is that "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry once rejected a note from the studio to include a Christian chaplain as a character on board the USS Enterprise.
In David Alexander's 1995 book "Star Trek Creator: The Authorized Biography of Gene Roddenberry," the ur-Trekkie himself, raised Southern Baptist, described himself as a Humanist who would eventually consider religion "to be more spice than nourishment." He described himself as a "total pagan," although he seemingly wouldn't go so far as to describe himself as an atheist. In Yvonne Fern's 1994 book "Gene Roddenberry: The Last Conversation," he more or less declared himself a deist, saying, "It's not true that I don't believe in God. I believe in a kind of God. It's just not other people's God. I reject religion. I accept the notion of God."

"Star Trek" ensembles often wind up serving double duty as the series' pool for episode directors. It started with the movies -- Leonard Nimoy directed 1984's "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and 1986's "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," with the former stemming from fan fiction. William Shatner directed 1989's "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" — unfortunately, he wasn't as skilled in the director's chair as Kirk was in the Captain's.

It has been argued in the pages of /Film — by yours truly, incidentally — that Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley) from "Star Trek: Enterprise" is one of the franchise's best characters. On his show, Dr. Phlox serves as the Enterprise's chief medical officer, stationed there thanks to a special interspecies exchange program. Dr. Phlox is a Denobulan, an alien species previously unseen in "Star Trek." Denobulans are, the human characters found, an upbeat, jovial people. They admired human optimism, and were amused by our prudishness; Denobulans each have multiple spouses, marrying into extensive, open polycules. Dr. Phlox was excited to serve with humans, eager to get to know us better, and actively engage in an exchange of ideas and philosophies. Phlox represented Trek's overriding themes of multiculturalism, showing that we can all get along if we were thrilled to encounter new ideas, rather than wary.

On "Star Trek: Enterprise," John Billingsley played Dr. Phlox, the chief medical officer on board the titular ship. "Enterprise" took place a century prior to the events of the original "Star Trek," and was about Earth's very first ship to undergo a mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations. It was a time before starship shields were invented, before transporters were safe to use on living beings, and before the Prime Directive. It was also before Earth had come into contact with a great number of alien species, making the Enterprise crew almost entirely human. Serving on the bridge was the Vulcan T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) and serving as the ship's doctor was the Denobulan Phlox.
Dr. Phlox is one of the more fascinating characters in all of "Star Trek." Denobulans hadn't been introduced until "Enterprise," and he provided an entire new culture to explore.

The best character on "Star Trek: Enterprise" was easily Dr. Phlox, played by John Billingsley. Phlox, the first Denobulan to have appeared on "Star Trek," was genial, approachable, peculiar, and intelligent beyond measure. "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" will debut on Paramount+ on May 5, 2022. It's a show that only came into being once Anson Mount was seen playing Captain Christopher Pike in the second season of "Star Trek: Discovery," thereby activating the sensitive nostalgia glands of good Trekkies the world over (or at least the Trekkies with access to Paramount+). "Strange New Worlds" claims that it will deviate from the broader, arc-oriented structure of "Discovery" and "Picard," and mercifully revert to a traditional "Star Trek" episodic structure. This, in addition to taking place on the familiar Enterprise Ncc-1701, and featuring familiar characters...

This is one for the C-movie connoisseurs among you.
For those of you who don’t know (you won’t), there’s a new sci-fi spoof on the way called Unbelievable!!!!! It stars Snoop Dogg, 42 former Star Trek actors, Michael Madsen, and a ficus on a skateboard. That ought to answer all of your questions.
In the can for what appears to have been an eternity (some of the footage dates back as far as 2013), the film does at last have a release date. I say at last, but I’m not sure it was at the top of anyone’s list of movie treasure troves. Anyway, if you’re feeling particularly trashy (there’s no shame in that), sit down for Unbelievable!!!!! in an online premiere this August 1st. The premiere will also come with a virtual convention.

Star Trek: Enterprise is probably the worst live-action show in the franchise. Despite boasting Scott Bakula as Captain Archer and the great core concept of showing the first forays of mankind into the wider galaxy, it never found its feet (and it had an absolutely terrible opening song). The series attempted to switch things up in the third and fourth seasons by focusing more on action, but it failed to convince audiences and was unceremoniously cancelled in 2005.
The legacy of Enterprise was explored in a virtual panel at last week’s Galaxy Con Live, in which Enterprise stars John Billingsley, Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating discussed what did and didn’t work. Billingsley, in particular, didn’t mince words when it came to casting blame, saying the show’s flaws were the fault of the producers and network.

There’s very little that can be said about “Homecoming” Season 2 without venturing into spoiler territory, so let’s start with this: Anyone who loved the ambiguous ending of Amazon Prime’s first season, especially if you were taken by the profound connection between Walter Cruz (Stephan James) and Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts), should enter into Season 2 with caution. It’s not that podcast creators and series showrunners Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg provide a definitive answer as to what or who Walter remembers after his “treatment” at the Homecoming facility (though they kinda do), or even that they’re dismissive toward that poignant final moment so beautifully composed by Season 1 director Sam Esmail — far from it.
Everyone involved in crafting Season 2, including new full-time director Kyle Patrick Alvarez (“The Stanford Prison Experiment”), seems hellbent on telling a story that exists on the periphery of what came before. That helps...

A beloved crewmember leaves show as The Orville clumsily tackles anti-vaxxers.
This The Orville review contains spoilers.
The Orville Season 2 Episode 3
Hardcore fans of The Orville will often cite the fact that the show holds true to the spirit of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but the reality is that most episodes feel more like a late-season Voyager episode or standalone episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. And before Orville fans take offense to that statement, this isn’t intended as an insult. I love Enterprise, specifically the 2004 episode titled “Home,” which shares its title— and themes — with this episode of The Orville. When Alara’s (Halston Sage) physical condition begins to weaken, she has to return to her homeplanet resulting in a weird storyline about anti-vaxxers in space and a heartbreaking departure.
As far as the set-up goes, hardcore Trekkie, the new Orville episode “Home” will feel like a mash-up of the Enterprise episode “Home,...

There are a lot of narrative styles woven throughout The Orville Season 2 Episode 3. Disguised as a bit of a mystery-turned-hostage-situation, it's also a family reconciliation story and a farewell episode.
After the lackluster outing of The Orville Season 2 Episode 2, this was a huge relief and, more than a return to form, this may have been the best bit of writing the series has offered to date.

Alara Kitan has been a core crew member since the series premiered. Young, deceptively dainty-looking, Lt. Kitan has, by turns, been the uncertain ingenue and the heroic muscle.

"The Orville," Seth MacFarlane's Star Trek-inspired series, has cast a former member of the starship Enterprise in its upcoming season.
John Billingsley, who played Dr. Phlox in all four seasons of "Star Trek: Enterprise," will appear in the second episode of "The Orville" Season 2.
In the episode, titled "Home," Billingsley will play a character named Cambis, according to sources close to the production.
It is unknown whether there will be a nod to his role on "Enterprise," but it is not the first time the actor has played a character with links to the sci-fi series.
In an episode of "Stargate: SG-1," titled "The Other Guys," Billingsley played a scientist with a fascination with "Star Trek" and who dressed as a Vulcan at conventions.
The episode is due to air on Dec. 30 on FOX.

“Sci-fi For The Mind”
By Raymond Benson
Renowned science fiction writer Jerome Bixby produced many short stories in the genre, but he is perhaps most well-known for writing a handful of classic Star Trek episodes. The memorable original Twilight Zone entry, “It’s a Good Life,” was based on his short story, as was the same segment in The Twilight Zone—The Motion Picture (1983). Bixby was also responsible for the stories or scripts for sci-fi films such as Fantastic Voyage (1966), and It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958).
Bixby’s last work, allegedly completed on his deathbed in 1998, was the screenplay The Man from Earth. Nearly ten years later (2007), Bixby’s son Emerson helped bring it to the screen as producer. The low-budget feature was directed by Richard Schenkman and starred David Lee Smith as “John Oldman,” a man in the present day who has lived without aging for 14,000 years. Dozens Of ‘Star Trek’ Actors Converge For Snoop Dogg’s Parody Pic ‘Unbelievable’ – Watch The Trailer
It’s a Trekkie delight. No idea why so many Star Trek actors thought this was a great idea, but they did. Snoop Dogg seems to be the furthest thing away from sci-fi as you can get, but he’s one of the stars Unbelievable, a parody film that uses a puppet for James T. Kirk. Watch the trailer for below.
The original score was written/composed by Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated Gerald Fried — the last living composer from the original Star Trek series.
Snoop Dogg executive produced the film from writer-director Steven Fawcette that also stars Nichelle Nichols (who also co-produced), Angelique Fawcette (also a producer), Michael Madsen and Robert Davi. Also in the film are Casper Smart, Sam Asghari, Gilbert Gottfried and newcomer Katarina Van Derham.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's worth quoting the latest (perhaps the last?) gnomic pronouncements from Margaret "The Log Lady" Lanterman (the late Catherine E. Coulson), speaking via phone to Deputy Sheriff Tommy "Hawk" Hill (Michael Horse), in full: "Hawk—electricity is humming. You hear it in the mountains and rivers. You see it dance among the seas and stars. And glowing around the moon. But in these days, the glow is dying. What will be in the darkness that remains? The Truman brothers are both true men. They are your brothers. And the others, the good ones, who have been with you. Now the circle is almost complete. Watch and listen to the dream of time and space. It all comes out now, flowing like a river. That which is and is not.

We salute 10 memorable guest roles on Stargate Sg-1, featuring Seth, The Keeper and more...
As with our previous features, this is a list designed to celebrate the very best performances by guest actors in Stargate Sg-1. However, we did come across a couple of challenges in compiling the list for this particular series. We’ve defined ‘guest performance’ as an actor playing a character who is not a regular or recurring character – so the actor must have played the character no more than twice in this particular series (though they may have appeared more often in other branches of the franchise). Stargate Sg-1 liked to re-use its best guest characters as often as possible, frequently bringing back characters like Claudia Black’s Vala Mal Doran after what was initially a one-off appearance, which is great as the audience get to enjoy them again, but seriously reduces the number of eligible performances.

"If you're being honest, and vulnerable, and real, everyone can relate to that..." A24 has revealed a new featurette for Mike Mills' latest film, 20th Century Women, which recently premiered at the New York Film Festival last month. The featurette focuses on the various characters, or rather, the incredible women at the center of this fantastic film. The ensemble cast includes Annette Bening in the lead as the mother, with Elle Fanning, Alia Shawkat, Laura Wiggins, Billy Crudup, Greta Gerwig, John Billingsley and Waleed Zuaiter. It tells the story of a single mother raising her children in the late 1970s, and how different and unique and free they all are. Even though we've already featured two great trailers for this, I'm happy to bring more attention to this film in hopes that more people seek it out. Opening on Christmas Day. Here's the new character featurette for Mike Mills' 20th Century Women,...
