The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut
The sophomore directorial effort from master of horror Clive Barker, Nightbreed is by no means an obscurity among genre fans, but some may not be familiar with the director’s cut, which runs 20 minutes longer than the original version and has been reworked to better reflect Barker’s original vision. While it was virtually impossible to live up to the subversive heights of Hellraiser, Nightbreed is an admirable, if uneven, effort in its own right. Based on his 1988 novella Cabal, Barker incorporates elements of fantasy, monster movies, psychological thrillers, and slashers, but at its core Nightbreed is a love story.

Clive Barker’s Nightbreed begins with the sort of gory bloodletting that one expects from the writer-director. The film, based on Barker’s 1988 novella Cabal, introduces us to a masked slasher who’s soon revealed to be Phillip Decker (David Cronenberg), a therapist who’s been slowly drugging and manipulating a patient, Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer), into believing that he’s responsible for the doctor’s recent crimes. But just as soon as we’re primed for a perverse spin on the psychological horror genre, Nightbreed wildly pivots in a totally different direction.
Decker arranges a scenario that will result in Boone being shot at by police before anyone asks questions, but as Sheffer’s patsy is drawn into a cemetery, he’s confronted by humanoid monsters. Though Decker’s plan works and Boone is torn apart by bullets, the man rises from the dead due to his exposure to the monsters,...

Who knew there were so many “Cop Rock” fans. After John Oliver lambasted that hilariously bad and short-lived dramatic musical cop series on a recent episode of “Last Week Tonight,” DVD sales of the show went skyrocketing.
Demand for the 11-episode series from Steven Bochco, creator of such hits like “Hill Street Blues” and “L.A. Law” (though he’d probably wish we’d all just forget this one) has gotten so big that it caused a shortage of DVDs. There are no copies at all of “Cop Rock: The Complete Series” until May, according to an email from Shout! Factory, which produces the set (via Mediate).
“We’re writing to let you know that Cop Rock: The Complete Series is currently out of stock. There was a system-wide outage caused by a surge in orders due to the segment featured on ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.'”

Writer’s Note: This is the second part of our 25th Anniversary retrospective for Nightbreed which celebrated its monumental birthday yesterday. You can check out part one Here.
Nightbreed may not have necessarily been a huge commercial and financial success upon its release in February 1990, but it was a hugely important film for many reasons. At a time when horror was mostly focused on sequels and slasher-centric types of stories, Clive Barker dared to not only make a film about monsters, but make a film about monsters who were also heroes, which was a remarkable feat in itself.
Something else Nightbreed is fondly remembered for by fans of Barker’s horror fantasy is the wonderfully visceral and intricate special effects work on the film by the aforementioned Bob Keen. Both Hugh Ross (“Narcisse”) and Simon Bamford (“Ohnaka”) recalled their two pivotal scenes that involved some of Keen’s effects magic-...

Today, Clive Barker’s wildly imaginative Nightbreed celebrates its 25th anniversary. While that is a remarkable feat in itself, the journey that the film has taken over the years has become the project’s enduring legacy within the horror genre. The recent Director’s Cut release of Nightbreed has been the ultimate vindication for Barker, who saw his vision snapped away decades ago from producers who believed they understood the world of Midian- and all its monsters- better than their creator.
Of course, that wasn’t the case, as Nightbreed received a disastrous response when it arrived in theaters, maligned mostly for its lack of subtlety and nuanced storytelling that was found within the pages of Barker’s original novella, Cabal. When Barker decided to move forward on adapting his work for the big screen, he was quick to rely on his some of his very closest friends to bring...

Starry Eyes
A blood-soaked cautionary tale about the price of fame and sacrificing your own identity in the name of ambition, Starry Eyes is yet another fantastic reminder that the indie genre world is truly the best (and generally only) place fans can find ambitious and challenging horror tales these days. Anchored by a breakout performance by Alex Essoe, Starry Eyes is by far one of the more captivating and unforgettable horror movies I’ve seen this year and I cannot recommend it enough.
Snowpiercer
For Snowpiercer, Bong Joon-ho ventures into the sci-fi realm resulting in an experience that’s relentless, exhilarating, emotionally devastating and wholly unlike anything else released this year. A masterful blending of genres coupled with timeless political allegories, a hint of social satire and a star-studded cast who all deliver tour de force performances. Snowpiercer may not necessarily be the biggest movie that was released this year,...

Back in 1990, just prior to its release, 20th Century Fox recut Nightbreed drastically, attempting to shift its somewhat progressive, fantastical subtext into the format of a relatively standard slasher film. Though Clive Barker managed to get the film funded in part by the cult success of his oft-misunderstood examination of aberrant sexual desire, Hellraiser, the notion of marketing a film that deliberately subverted the existing hero ethos—positing outsiders as victims rather than villains—was a little too much for a wide release with a video game tie-in. The resulting film was understandably an intriguing mess that genuinely felt unfinished or at least lacking in the usual depth of purpose associated with Barker’s work.

Nightbreed: The Director's Cut - Scream Factory - Blu-ray Director: Clive Barker Cast: Craig Sheffer, Anne Bobby, David Cronenberg,Charles Haid, Hugh Quarshie. Full cast + crew The Nightbreed director's cut may be the most interesting director's cuts to come along in a while. On the one hand, we obviously all want to see what a director's original vision for something looked like-- especially if it involves drastic changes from the previously released version of a movie. And that is indeed the case with Clive Barker's preferred cut of his ambitious 1990 horror fantasy movie. It restores a ton of material that never made it into the original version of the movie, and uses alternate takes of some stuff that was already...

The day is finally here. Some of us have been waiting decades to catch a glimpse of Clive Barker’s intended vision of his 1990 epic monster movie, Nightbreed. Some of us got close with the Cabal Cut, but that still wasn’t his intended vision. It was long-thought to be an impossibility, thanks to both studio interference, as well as mishandling of the original elements. Hell, when Scream Factory announced the title, most of us assumed we would be getting the Cabal Cut, including the awful-looking footage sourced from VHS. I feel like, when the announcement was made that all of the materials they needed were located in a vault somewhere, a big enough deal wasn’t made. I see people every day, disappointed that The Cabal Cut isn’t what we’re getting with this release. These people don’t understand that Barker’s Director’s Cut is superior...

Anyone with an interest in watching Clive Barker’s director’s cut of Nightbreed should most likely be familiar enough with the troubled production history and the Cabal cut that was making the festival rounds a couple of years ago. What makes this the definitive version of Barker’s ambitious dark fantasy is how this manages to expand the grand mythology taken from his novel Cabal, while adding clarity to Lori (Anne Bobby) and Boone’s (Craig Sheffer) relationship as the center of the story. Most importantly, the 40 minutes of new material was added in a way that actually helps the pacing and only running 18 minutes longer than the theatrical version keeps this from being a bloated experience.
Added footage of Boone and Lori together before he travels to the exotic home of the monsters, helps give their relationship a sense of purpose and Lori’s nightclub performance adds more depth to her character.

Clive Barker‘s second feature film as a director hit theaters in 1990 in a compromised and heavily molested form thanks to the meddling suits at Warner Bros. and Morgan Creek, but while Nightbreed died a quick death on the big screen the desire for Barker’s full vision lived on in the hearts and minds of fans. Rumors swirled about lost footage, and when years later much of those scenes were found the world was treated to a “restored” cut of the film featuring these rediscovered scenes dropped into the existing feature to form the Cabal Cut. The resulting cut had its pros and cons — my full review is here — but it was a kitchen sink version and never meant to be construed as Barker’s preferred vision. Happily, and somewhat miraculously, that vision is now getting its day in the sun as Scream Factory releases the lovingly restored, Barker-supervised director’s cut complete with a beautiful...

A while back it was announced that Scream Factory would finally be bringing the “Cabal Cut” of Nightbreed to home video. Fans have begged for this release for a long time, so the excitement levels were high. A bit later, it was revealed that it wouldn’t actually be the Cabal Cut, but a new, director approved Director’s Cut of the film. Some were angry that it wouldn’t technically be the cut of the film that they wanted, but after a quick explanation, I was convinced that this would be superior. This is a new director’s cut of the film approved by Clive Barker. The reason the Cabal Cut isn’t what’s being released, is that basically, it’s the kitchen sink version of the film. Everything available was compiled to comprise the Cabal Cut, so the film is being whittled down, so that we still...

Maine-based director Corey Norman will be debuting his first feature, The Hanover House, at the Lewiston Auburn Film Festival in April; and he dropped us a line with more info on the film, including its trailer. Check it out!
Starring Brian Chamberlain and Casey Turner and marking the return of Anne Bobby (Clive Barker's Nightbreed) to the horror genre, The Hanover House is directed by Norman and co-written and produced him and Haley Norman.
Norman told us, "The Hanover House was filmed over the course of 16 days in January and May of 2013 using a Red Epic camera. One thing that sets the production of The Hanover House apart from other haunted house films on the market is the fact that we filmed in an actual haunted house. Built in 1883, this farmhouse, which is located in the mountains of western Maine, has been the home of supernatural phenomena for the last hundred years.

While it was revealed at the Scream Factory panel that they’d be releasing Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut to Blu-ray, the deal was officially sealed today:

The announcement was made by Shout! Factory’s founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos along with David Robinson, President of Morgan Creek Productions. In an exclusive interview with Daily Dead, Russell Cherrington, Mark Miller, and Michael Plumides discuss their work on The Cabal Cut, teaming up with Scream Factory, bonus features, and where you can catch a screening of the movie later this week:
Congratulations on getting The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray.
Mark Miller: First let me say, this is an incredible time for Seraphim Films. We have worked closely with Morgan Creek on bringing the Cabal Cut to the world, and upon hearing the news that a deal had been struck with Shout Factory, we were overjoyed. The fruits of our labors have finally paid off. We eagerly await the next chapter in this saga.

One of the real exciting announcements to come out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con is the fact that Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (review) is finally making its way to video. Michael Plumides is a filmmaker who was instrumental in making this happen.
Plumides recently sat down with Dread Central and talked about his experiences helping Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut finally see the light of day.
Dread Central: What was your role in this venture?
Michael Plumides: Well, I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although I've lived in Georgia and South Carolina I was born and raised here. And though my 4808 Club was shut down by the city after the infamous Gwar show of 1990, I still consider this my home - even if they tried to run me out on a rail. I wrote a book about it entitled, Kill the Music that someday I hoped to turn into a film.

Scream Factory had an exciting announcement for Clive Barker fans during their Comic-Con panel tonight. We previously told you that there has been a push to get Clive Barker’s extended cut of Nightbreed on Blu-ray and it’s now official.
While this was just an early announcement, we expect The Cabal Cut blu-ray to receive the Scream Factory collector’s edition treatment, which would include a new HD transfer and an extensive set of bonus features. Here are details on the work that went into originally putting The Cabal Cut together:
“Ever since it was first released, Clive Barker’s Nightbreed has been the subject of much debate. For nearly twenty years now, there have been stories of more Nightbreed, missing scenes, and special edition releases. These stories have always been conjecture and hearsay. Until now…

Just wanted to remind everyone that Nightbreed is screening in a restored cut (155 min. long) in Chicago this Friday July 13 and Saturday July 14 . Here's a link back to the story I posted in May that has ticket info etc. Stars Anne Bobby will be on hand as will the restoration head Russell Charrington. Also screening are Hellraiser and Candyman, various shorts and ephemera. This is a rarer than rare chance to see the film as director Clive Barker intended before the studio gutted it. Word is that if screenings go as well as anticipated this will eventually get an Se BluRay release. But this 35mm projection promises to be something truly special for those who can say they were there. ...

Chicago – Fans of the inventively gruesome filmmaker and visual artist Clive Barker will be delighted by the eleventh installment of Terror in the Aisles. A rare Clive Barker Triple Feature will screen Friday, July 13, at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave, featuring two very special guests, and the restored version of a Barker classic.
The cinematic mayhem kicks off at 7:30pm with the midwest premiere of “Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut,” a 155-minute extended version of the 1990 horror fantasy. Based on Barker’s 1988 novella, “Cabal,” the film revolves around a group of mutant outcasts discovered by a haunted everyman (Craig Sheffer) and his bewildered girlfriend (Anne Bobby). The film is notable for its supporting performance by the acclaimed filmmaker David Cronenberg (“The Fly,” “A History of Violence”) and its atmospheric score by master composer Danny Elfman. Clive Barker (Hellraiser) looks to be developing a reboot of his 1990 film Nightbreed for the small screen. Rabid Doll (via Blastr) is reporting that Barker looks to be poised to reboot the film based on his own 1988 horror novella Cabal. The film version starred Craig Sheffer (One Tree Hill), Anne Bobby, David Cronenberg, Charles Haid (Hill Street Blues) and Pinhead himself, actor Doug Bradley.
The story followed "a secret community of ancient and weird-looking creatures want to avoid the human world as well as a seriously deranged serial killer with the help of a young man named Boone (Sheffer), who, unbeknownst to himself, has his very own special destiny in Midian."
Here is what Barker had to say about the project:
"It will have a chance to be as sexy or as graphic in terms of the violence as we need it to be. For example, do you have Spartacus over there?...
