Speaking to CNN on Thursday, shortly after SAG-AFTRA announced it had made its historic deal ending the actors strike, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher told CNN Anchor Kate Bolduan the union’s success had “ignited a workers movement around the world.”
Reports of the 118-day walkout were headline news from Spain to Seoul and from London, Ontario to London, England. Unions representing actors and other entertainment professionals largely stood in solidarity with their American counterparts and were quick to congratulate SAG-AFTRA when they secured a new, tentative three-year agreement. Many are also looking stateside for inspiration in their own labor battles.
“We are immensely proud of SAG-AFTRA for taking on this incredible fight for all performers around the world,” said Gabrielle Carteris, the former SAG-AFTRA president who now heads up the International Federation of Actors (Fia), a global federation of performers’ trade unions and guilds representing hundreds of thousands of performers in more than 60 countries worldwide.

The International Federation of Actors (Fia) has praised SAG-AFTRA for taking on an “incredible fight for all performers around the world.
Hollywood is in celebration mode after actors union SAG and the studios struck a tentative new three-year deal, which effectively began on Thursday, and the good vibes are spreading beyond U.S. borders.
The Brussels-based Fia, which represents hundreds of thousands of performers from around 90 member organizations in more than 60 countries, said the deal “establishes a landmark standard that will have a lasting impact across generations, particularly with respect to how actors are to be rewarded for the streaming of their performances and protected against the abusive use of AI.”
Many unions and their countries’ networks and streamers are having similar discussions over residuals, AI and other issues, and the U.S. agreement is widely seen as a blueprint to take forwards.

SAG-AFTRA’s top negotiator has never done this before.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland has worked for the union for most of his adult life. In that time, he has become a master of the details. He taught himself Spanish to work on an international treaty on intellectual property. Then he bargained with Telemundo, switching between Spanish and English to hammer out the first U.S. labor contract for telenovela actors.
But until this year, he had never led contract negotiations with the major film and TV studios. As it turned out, his first year at the helm was also the first that SAG-AFTRA went on strike on that contract in 43 years. As a result, Crabtree-Ireland has had to grow into a new public role.

More than 3,600 SAG-AFTRA members have signed an open letter declaring they would rather stay on strike than “cave” to a bad deal. The hardline group, which calls itself Members in Solidarity, includes actors Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jon Hamm, Maya Hawke, Marisa Tomei, John Leguizamo and Bryan Cranston, among many other famous names. Their letter expresses support for the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee and says that it speaks for the majority of the guild who “are still standing in solidarity, ready to strike as long as it takes and to endure whatever we must in order to win a deal that is worthy of our collective sacrifice”. It comes as SAG-AFTRA has been on strike for more than 100 days, bringing almost all scripted film and TV production in North America to a standstill. The Members in Solidarity letter says: “We have not come all this way to cave now. “We have not gone without work,...

Everybody who needs to be in the room when SAG-AFTRA and the studios sit down for talks next week will be.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the actors union’s national executive director and chief negotiator, will be returning from Turkey this weekend in time for Monday’s resumption of negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which will be held at the guild’s offices in Los Angeles.
The two sides hadn’t met since the actors union went on strike on July 14.

Joined by her co-stars Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris and Brian Austin Green, Doherty received huge support from the audience and her cast mates.
“Shannen, I know I speak on behalf of this crew, on behalf of all of these people, how happy we are to see you here,” Breanne Heldman, the panel moderator, said before the rupture of applause filled the room. Heldman said she “felt the love” on stage between the castmates.

The power of a single vote was on full display yesterday in Nashville, where actor and stuntman Bill “Bilbro” Yarbrough defeated his nearest rival by a single vote to win a seat on the guild’s national board of directors.
The voting there also shows the power of apathy, with only 213 (15%) of the Nashville local’s 1,422 eligible members casting ballots. Yarbrough defeated Bob Bailey, his nearest rival, by a vote of 78 to 77. A third candidate, Evans Donnell, received 56 votes.
Yarbrough is now the first candidate elected to the national board as part of the dissident faction led by Maya Gilbert-Dunbar, who’s running against incumbent president Fran Drescher. Peter Antico, Gilbert-Dunbar’s running mate, is squaring off against incumbent secretary-treasurer Joely Fisher.

It’s the spotlight Fran Drescher turned out, unexpectedly, to be born for.
Speaking at a press conference announcing the actors strike Thursday, the SAG-AFTRA president, still known best for her winsome and haphazardly charming protagonist of the sitcom “The Nanny,” looked stricken. Speaking at first deliberately and then with increasing passion, Drescher narrated her union’s attempt, initially, to avoid a strike, and then what she cast as the dawning realization that action was required.
It was a performance with build and emotional heft, culminating in an appeal to labor across the world: “This is a moment of history that is a moment of truth,” she declared — and if that reads a bit awkwardly on the page, well, you should have heard how she delivered it. She continued to excoriate “big business, who care more about Wall Street than you and your family.” On “you,” she gestured out into the audience; on “your family,...

We would still trust Andrea Zuckerman to edit a newspaper, but after watching Monday’s 9-1-1 premiere, we’d be less confident letting her pilot an aircraft.
Gabrielle Carteris guest-starred as the co-pilot of a blimp that crashed into a stadium full of soccer fans — all to the tune of Panic! At the Disco’s “High Hopes,” because of course. And just like that, the 118 did what the 118 does, springing into action to rescue the pilots as well as the panicked crowd. Athena even got to fill in as a part-time heart surgeon, which is always a fun surprise.

9-1-1 is kicking off its sixth season with a major disaster — a blimp! — and with one of the 118’s own in some serious trouble. The new trailer for the Fox first responder drama offers a look at some of the calls the firefighters, paramedics, and police officers will be dealing with, as well as a look at Beverly Hills, 90210‘s Gabrielle Carteris as one of the blimp captains. Jack Zeman /Fox The video offers a look at Sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) trying to calm everyone down in the middle of the emergency (much easier said than done) as well as Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) taking control and giving out orders. But what really has us worried: Henrietta “Hen” Wilson (Aisha Hinds) saying “Losing someone out there is never easy,” and Athena yelling for Bobby. Watch it above. That blimp disaster certainly seems to look like exactly what...

Netflix Studios and SAG-AFTRA have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, Variety has confirmed.
The contract will be a successor to the three-year deal that the streamer and union signed in 2019, which was approved upon by SAG-AFTRA’s national board without ratification by union membership. Prior to the contract, Netflix signed agreements with the union on a production-by-production basis, and used the union’s codified agreement and television agreements as a template.
The 2019 deal was set at the time to expire June 30, but was extended to July 31 as Netflix and SAG-AFTRA agreed to extend negotiations. The deal between Netflix and SAG-AFTRA will be reviewed at the SAG-AFTRA national board’s next meeting, which is scheduled for next Monday. Details of what the successor contract looks like will not be released until after the board’s review, according to SAG-AFTRA.

SAG-AFTRA and Netflix have reached a tentative deal on a new contract to replace the novel agreement they penned in 2019.
The performers’ union announced the tentative deal — which will now go to the union’s National Board and, later, to members for approval — on Tuesday. The National Board will next meet and discuss the agreement on August 8. No other details were available about the pact at this time. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Netflix for comment.
Earlier this summer, the SAG-aftra-Netflix deal was extended until Sunday, July 31.
The original 2019 Netflix deal split the streamer off from the contracts that major studios negotiate under the auspices of negotiating body the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) with SAG-AFTRA. The streamer-specific agreement covered live-action scripted production, incorporated dubbing and performance capture and was called “groundbreaking” by then-union president Gabrielle Carteris. At the 61st Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Jason Priestley looked back at the success of ’90s teen soap “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and explained why the 2019 reboot “BH90210” got canceled by Fox after one season.
“BH90210” was described by Variety as a “soapy parody” that gave “the actors behind our favorite characters the space to play versions of themselves while poking fun at the public personas, rabid fans and roles that made them famous.” It saw original series cast members Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty playing heightened versions of themselves, rather than their original characters. But it was a high stakes gamble that ultimately didn’t pay off, said the North Vancouver native.

The We Own This City series on HBO was written by David Simon and George Pelecanos who also worked on The Wire TV show together. While that beloved Baltimore-based series ran for five seasons, We Own This City appears to have been designed as a single-season mini-series of six episodes. However, if it's successful enough, could this new show still be renewed for a second season? Could there be more story to tell? Stay tuned.

SAG-AFTRA’s national board voted today to approve a tentative agreement on a new 1 billion-a-year commercials contract and to recommend its ratification to the guild’s members. The deal, which was approved by 93 of the national board members, was reached Tuesday with the Joint Policy Committee of the advertising industry. Bargaining got underway February 16 in New York.
According the the guild, the deal is valued at an additional 120 million over three years, which is effectively a 5.55 increase in wages and benefit contributions. The blended contribution rate increase in the 2022 agreement is effectively a 1.01 increase in the contribution rate to the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan.
“The agreement also establishes flat fee, per-cycle rates across broad swaths of digital and traditional media, institutes new standards for diversity and equity; and builds in enhanced protections for performers depicted nude, partially nude or as engaging in intimate acts,” the guild said, and “monetizes the exponential...

“We Own This City!” would appear to be the chest-beating battle cry of a corrupt Baltimore Pd task force, as seen in the trailer for HBO’s upcoming crime drama from The Wire‘s David Simon and George Pelecanos.
Premiering Monday, April 25 at 9/8c, the six-episode limited series, which is based on the book by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton, chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force, and the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.

SAG-AFTRA and the Joint Policy Committee of the advertising industry have begun negotiations for a new set of commercials contracts. The current contracts expire March 31. Three years ago, the union said that its commercials contracts “cover an estimated $1 billion in annual earnings.”
“Both groups look forward to productive bargaining under a jointly agreed upon media blackout already in effect and will have no further comment,” the union and the Jpc said in a joint statement.
Former SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris will chair the union’s negotiating committee, and national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland will serve as chief negotiator. Stacy Marcus will be the ad industry’s chief negotiator.

Exclusive: Dues payable by SAG-AFTRA’s high-earning members will be going up over the next two years, per a resolution passed at the union’s recently-concluded 5th biennial convention. The dues hike will be achieved by increasing the maximum earnings on which members pay their percentage of work dues.
The dues cap on work earnings, which has not been raised since the merger of SAG and AFTRA in 2012, is currently set at $500,000, but will be going up to $750,000 in May of 2022, and to $1 million in May of 2023.
The resolution passed at the convention states:
Whereas, member dues are the main means by which SAG-AFTRA is able to fund its work on behalf of members, and
Whereas, those resources underpin all essential SAG-AFTRA initiatives, including contract negotiations and enforcement, safety protocols and rules, diversity, equity, and inclusion, residuals processing, and countless other activities protecting our members; and

Exclusive: SAG-AFTRA’s national election committee has dismissed a plethora of post-election protests that were filed by the losing candidates and their supporters in the union’s recent election in which Fran Drescher, running on the ruling party’s Unite for Strength (Ufs) slate, was elected president, and Joely Fisher, running on the opposition Membership First slate, was voted in as national secretary-treasurer, defeating Anthony Rapp.
Matthew Modine, who was defeated in his second bid for the presidency, was one of several MembershipFirst candidates who filed protests, though Fisher, his victorious running mate, did not challenge the outcome. Other complaints were filed by SAG-AFTRA members Peter Antico, Adam Nelson, Chuck Slavin, David Clennon, Samantha Hartson and Kevin Cannon.
“We have carefully reviewed and considered the protests, the parties’ submissions, the Election Policy, the SAG-AFTRA Constitution, and applicable federal election law,” the committee said in its decision. “We conclude that there...

Fran Drescher claimed victory in her race for president of SAG-AFTRA on Thursday night, and vowed to lock arms with her fellow union members and “rise up out of the melee.”
Easier said than done.
Drescher takes charge of a union that is famously fractious, and more divided than it has been in recent years.
Even as the star of “The Nanny” defeated Matthew Modine by a narrow margin, Modine’s dissident faction — Membership First — gained seats on the national board, took overwhelming control of the Los Angeles local, and won the election for national secretary-treasurer, the third-ranking post in the union.
Drescher’s party — Unite for Strength — will still command a majority on the national board, observers say. And as president, Drescher will decide who serves on which committee — including the committee that will negotiate the union’s next TV/Theatrical contract in 2023.

Jodi Long Elected President Of SAG-AFTRA’s L.A. Local As MembershipFirst Candidates Win In Landslide
Jodi Long has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA’s Los Angeles local, defeating Yvette Nicole Brown by a vote of 7,154 to 6,096. She succeeds Patricia Richardson as the local’s president.
The L.A. local, which represents nearly half of the union’s entire membership, long has been a stronghold for the MembershipFirst opposition party, which won all three of the local’s officer races, 11 of the 14 open national board seats and 31 of the 41 local board seats reserved for actors and performers. They were the top 10 vote-getters for the national board and the top nine for the local board.
Gabrielle Carteris, who did not seek re-election as national president, was elected as a delegate to the union’s next convention but didn’t make the cut to win one of the 14 national board seats, finishing 16th.

Fran Drescher has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA, in a narrow victory for the faction that has led the union for a dozen years.
Drescher defeated Matthew Modine, who ran on the rival Membership First slate, by a tally of 52.5% to 47.5%.
Meanwhile, Joely Fisher — who was Modine’s running mate on the Membership First slate — won the race for secretary-treasurer, defeating Drescher’s running mate, Anthony Rapp, by a margin of 57.7% to 42.3%.
Drescher will succeed Gabrielle Carteris, who has led the organization since 2016. Best known for her lead role on “The Nanny,” Drescher led the Unite for Strength slate, which has controlled the union since 2009 and is seen as the more moderate of the two factions that dominate the union’s internal politics.
In a campaign video, Drescher said she would bring “positivity and optimism” to her role as union president.

Updated with vote count and winners’ quotes: Fran Drescher has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA and, in a split decision, her opponent’s running mate, Joely Fisher, has been elected national secretary-treasurer. Drescher defeated Matthew Modine, who was making his second bid for the presidency, but her running mate, Anthony Rapp, lost to Fisher.
In a close race, Drescher defeated Modine 16,958 votes to 15,371, while Fisher beat Rapp 18,547 to 13,593. A total of 122,154 ballots were mailed and 32,362 were returned (26.49%). Turnout this year was considerably higher than two years ago, when only 21.2% of the members voted.

In one of her last official acts as president of SAG-AFTRA, Gabrielle Carteris today presented Michelle Hurd with the SAG-AFTRA President’s Award for her outstanding commitment to the union’s membership and to the labor movement.
Hurd, who stars on the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard, is a national board member who’s running on Carteris’ Unite for Strength slate. Carteris, who also is running for a seat on the board, will wrap up her presidency after a new president – either Fran Drescher or Matthew Modine – is elected tonight.
“Michelle Hurd is a change-maker,” Carteris said. “She is a shining example of how to balance a successful acting career with dedicated union service and a commitment to improving the lives of SAG-AFTRA members and all workers. Michelle has led from the frontlines in our efforts to ensure the safety and protection of SAG-AFTRA members and to help eradicate sexual harassment from the entertainment industry.

It is with great sadness we farewell Ed Asner, who died this week at the age of 91.
Ed was a former Screen Actors Guild President, SAG-AFTRA National Board member and SAG Life Achievement Award recipient. He was also a tireless fundraiser for the Ed Asner Family Center.

Updated with clarification: Two more local SAG-AFTRA presidencies have been decided: Jim Gleason won a squeaker in New Orleans, and Rik Deskin won handily in Seattle. Deskin, who defeated Peter M. Wallack by a vote of 158-62, is a prominent supporter of Fran Drescher, who’s running for SAG-AFTRA national president.
Gleason, who defeated Olga Wilhelmine in New Orleans by only eight votes – 120-112 – is a supporter of national presidential candidate Matthew Modine’s MembershipFirst slate. An earlier version of this story noted that Gleason, who won in New Orleans without even posting a candidate’s statement on the ballot, does not appear to be aligned with either faction. Gleason, however, does support Modine for national president, and his running mate, Joely Fisher for national secretary-treasurer.

An earlier version of this story noted that Gleason, who won in New Orleans without even posting a candidate’s statement on the ballot, does not appear to be aligned with either faction. Gleason, however, does support Modine for national president, and his running mate, Joely Fisher for national secretary-treasurer.

SAG-AFTRA’s national election committee has found that Ktla “crossed the line from journalistically appropriate news coverage” of the union’s ongoing election to “improper promotion” of candidates running on the union’s opposition MembershipFirst slate, which is headed by presidential candidate Matthew Modine.
The committee’s decision, which urges the L.A. local news station to provide “equal access” to candidates running on the ruling party’s Unite for Strength slate, which is headed by presidential candidate Fran Drescher, stems from an Aug. 4 interview that entertainment reporter Sam Rubin conducted with Joely Fisher, a MembershipFirst candidate for national secretary-treasurer, and Rubin’s Aug. 11 interview with Sheryl Lee Ralph, a MembershipFirst candidate for L.A. Local vice president. Rubin is also an L.A. Local board candidate running on their slate.

As ballots have been sent out to SAG-AFTRA members to elect their next leadership team, “Hotel Transylvania” and “The Nanny” star Fran Drescher is hoping to succeed Gabrielle Carteris as the president of the actors guild, leading it during a period where wages for streaming films and TV shows is expected to become a white-hot issue for all of Hollywood’s labor unions. “It’s frustrating to not know how well a show does on a streaming platform and that our members are not benefiting equitably,” Drescher told TheWrap. “A ratio of monies paid to a member must remain in direct correlation with the deal made with the studio. I think if the studio makes money, the member should too and the health plan needs to be paid into.”Drescher is running with the Unite For Strength slate, picking up the faction’s mantel that has been held by Carteris...

SAG-AFTRA presidential candidate Matthew Modine and his running mate, Joely Fisher, have emailed the union’s entire membership, accusing their opponents – Fran Drescher and Anthony Rapp – of not being ready to lead because they have no record of service in union office or on its boards or committees. They also accused the union’s current leadership of having misled the members about the “dire” situation the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan was in last year – a charge that the ruling Unite for Strength party calls “The Big Lie.”
“While we respect our opponents and their activism and appreciate their desire to serve,” Modine and Fisher said in their email, “it doesn’t make them prepared to step into leading the nation’s largest entertainment union. Our opponents have bragged that they can ‘pick it up, quick.’ This isn’t a cold read. There’s no improv. Our opponents – hand-picked by leaders who...
