Michael Caine recently told The Spectator (via IndieWire) that it’s “bullshit” his 1964 war epic “Zulu” was cited on a recent United Kingdom counter-terrorism report. The controversial Prevent strategy flagged a handful of popular films, British sitcoms, works of literature and more as possible sources of inspiration for terrorist groups and far-right extremists. “Zulu” was cited alongside “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” “Brave New World,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and the BBC’s original “House of Cards,” among other titles.
“That is the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard,” Caine said bluntly when told the news about “Zulu” being classified as a “key text” for “white nationalists and supremacists.”
“Zulu,” directed by Cy Endfield, opened in 1964 and served as Caine’s first major breakthrough film role following a string of uncredited movie appearances. The movie is set during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and follows a group of...

Michael Caine is calling B.S. on a recent UK counter-terrorism report.
The “Dark Knight Rises” actor spoke out on his 1964 war film “Zulu” being labeled as a “key text” for white nationalists and supremacists in a new research report from Prevent, written by William Shawcross. Other films “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “The Great Escape,” and “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” and novels “The Lord of the Rings,” “Brave New World,” and “1984” were among the list of texts that could inspire extremists, according to the report.
Caine called the inclusion of “Zulu” in the list the “biggest load of bullshit” in an interview with The Spectator. “That is the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard,” Caine said, later adding, “There are no films I wish I hadn’t made. I got paid for all of them.”

Masterpiece has released a trailer for the upcoming final season of Sanditon, the drama inspired by Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel, that was adapted and created by Andrew Davies and produced by Red Planet Pictures.
The series took on its own direction (Austen only finished 11 chapters before her death) and writer Justin Young took the helm as lead writer and executive producer for seasons 2 and 3. The drama will premiere on 9 p.m. Sunday, March 19, on PBS. The series also will be available to stream the same day.
Returning characters for Season 3 include Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), Georgiana Lambe (Crystal Clarke), Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes), Tom Parker (Kris Marshall), Mary Parker (Kate Ashfield), Lady Denham (Anne Reid), Edward Denham (Jack Fox), Arthur Parker (Turlough Convery), Lady Susan (Sophie Winkleman), and Ralph Starling (Cai Brigden).
More new faces are joining the series, like Lady Montrose, who is the quintessential Austen mother. She arrives in Sanditon with one objective: matches for her children, Lydia and Henry. Lydia is an independent young woman who is not as eager for a match as her mother, while Lord Henry Montrose is charismatic and confident, but he holds a secret.
There’s also Rowleigh Pryce, a wealthy, curmudgeonly investor who is interested in teaming up with Tom Parker on the seaside resort’s expansion. Their plans become complicated when Rowleigh runs into Lady Denham. Also new to Sanditon is Alexander’s brother, Samuel Colbourne – a lawyer, and a charming bachelor.

James Norton has reflected on working with the disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein on one of the producer’s last projects.
The actor, 37, was discussing the hit 2016 miniseries War & Peace in a new interview with The Independent, when he looked back on his encounters with Weinstein.
War & Peace, a retelling of Leo Tolstoy’s classic Russian novel, starred Norton as Prince Andrei Bolkonsky.
Weinstein served as an executive producer on the show, with Paul Dano and Lily James also starring. It was written by Andrew Davies and directed by Tom Harper.
The drama aired the year before Weinstein found himself accused of sexual harassment, assault and rape in an investigation by The New York Times that led to the #MeToo movement.
Speaking in a new interview with The Independent, Norton said of Weinstein: “He visited the set once when I was there, flew in for an hour, it was a handshake situation.

Love Actually actor Meg Wynn Owen had £65,000 stolen from her by friend and costume designer, a judge has ruled.
Owen died aged 82 in June this year. She suffered from dementia and was moved into a care home in Cardiff, Wales, in 2015.
According to Wales Online, her move came months after her friend Brian Malam, 60, was named her power of attorney due to her dementia in 2014.
Owen appeared in films including Love Actually, and Pride & Prejudice. She also made an appearance in Doctor Who, as well as the series Upstairs Downstairs.
Malam had pleaded guilty to fraud when he appeared in court for sentencing. He received a sentence of 32 months in prison.
Delivering Malam’s sentence, a judge said that the costume designer had abused the legal powers that he had been granted and “betrayed” a friend of his.

The series is based on Austen’s final, unfinished novel and was developed by Andrew Davies.

I don’t believe I have any more power now than I did at 22,” says Samantha Morton. “And I didn’t have any power then.”
That’s a startling statement to process after watching the 45-year-old’s regal performance in The Serpent Queen, during which she wields power with terrifyingly casual control and cruel smirks, as heads roll on her command. She stars as Catherine de Medici, the Italian merchant’s daughter who became queen of France in 1547, gradually acquiring a reputation as one of the most brutal and calculating European rulers of the period.
The crisp and witty feminism of the new Starz series highlights the misogynistic myths that history has spun around the “Medici Bitch” (who wasn’t conventionally pretty or submissive and did not conceive a child in the first decade of her marriage). But it doesn’t patronise its heroine by attempting to reinvent her as a misunderstood goody.

One of the biggest musicals of the decade is 2012’s Les Miserables, an adaptation of the hugely successful stage production featuring an all-star cast including Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham-Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen and many more. It was an awards magnet, too, achieving a whopping eight nominations at the Oscars that year and earning Hathaway a Best Supporting Actress gong.
You’d think that no one would attempt to top this surely definitive version of the story so soon then, but actually, you’d be wrong. According to industry insider The Knowledge, the BBC is working on a new TV series based on the original 19th century novel written by Victor Hugo. Screenwriter Andrew Davies – whose past credits include House of Cards and Bridget Jones’ Diary (so he’s clearly versatile) – is set to adapt the book, and the hunt for a cast has now begun.

“Mindhunter” is nothing like “House of Cards.”
“Mindhunter,” adapted from a novel by Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas, is set in 1979 and follows two FBI agents, played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, who are tasked with understanding the fractured psyches of serial killers in order to crack existing investigations and prevent future murders.
“House of Cards,” adapted from a British TV series by Andrew Davies, is set in the modern day and follows two married politicians, played by Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, whose quest for power in Washington D.C. takes them to unexpected extremes.
Save for David Fincher’s involvement and their distribution platform, the trailer for “Mindhunter” doesn’t look anything like “House of Cards.”
Except, of course, it does: It looks exactly like “House of Cards” — literally. The sharp, clean contrast; the blue and gray color palette; the shadows and silhouettes. “Mindhunter” looks like “House of Cards...

Hard to believe it's been 15 years since "Bridget Jones's Diary" surprised the world with blue soup, ugly Christmas sweaters, an unexpectedly funny Colin Firth, a shockingly nasty Hugh Grant, and a stunningly perfect English accent emerging from Texan Renée Zellweger.
Since the film adaptation of Helen Fielding's novel hit these shores on April 13, 2001, the awkward but lovable "singleton" heroine has been a worldwide favorite, spawning a 2004 sequel and a long-awaited third installment, "Bridget Jones's Baby," finally due for delivery this fall. This gimmicky reworking of Jane Austen’s classic uses deadpan decapitations to satire the prim costume drama but its gags are ultimately unearned
This laborious single-joke movie could well convince you that the mashup is the single most overrated thing in popular culture. Based on the 2009 bestseller attributed to “Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith”, the film is an elaborate spoof of Pride and Prejudice, taking place in an alternative England where the undead roam the land. The haughty Darcy (Sam Riley) is a renowned zombie hunter and Lizzie (Lily James) a dazzling ninja warrior. You get the elegant badinage, and then you get the people with half-eaten faces getting their bonneted heads blown off. It’s meticulously acted with deadpan attention to form – as well acted, in fact, as any conventional Austen adaptation – and it could conceivably be read as a satire of the traditional middlebrow tea-time costume drama (Andrew Davies...

It’s meticulously acted with deadpan attention to form – as well acted, in fact, as any conventional Austen adaptation – and it could conceivably be read as a satire of the traditional middlebrow tea-time costume drama (Andrew Davies...

"War and Peace" is considered one of the densest works of literature ever written, filled with not just a huge number of characters and massive plotting, but much of the personal philosophy of author Leo Tolstoy. It also happens to be mega-producer Harvey Weinstein's favorite book, which is why he's helped to bring the novel to the screen in a four-part A&E/Lifetime/History miniseries event starring everyone from veteran actors like Gillian Anderson, Stephen Rea and Jim Broadbent to young but well-known faces like Paul Dano, Lily James and James Norton. Read More: Why Legendary Writer Andrew Davies Does Adaptations: 'F*ck All Happens to You' Directed by Tom Harper ("Misfits," "Peaky Blinders") and written by the legendary screenwriter Andrew Davies (nearly every great British novel adaptation of the last 25 years), "War and Peace" tracks the epic story while focusing largely on the awkward but well-meaning Pierre...

Once such a conspicuous totem of idealized literacy that poor Charlie Brown was forced to read it over winter vacation, Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace remains a core element of the literary canon, but it's likely that fewer people than ever are pretending to have read the book. Perhaps that will change with the new miniseries adaptation of War and Peace, airing in four two-hour episodes on A&E, Lifetime and History, starting Monday (Jan. 18) night. Written in its totality by Andrew Davies (the beloved Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice) and directed by Tom Harper, this new War and

It may come as something of a shock to be reminded that the upcoming new season of the award-winning Netflix Original, House Of Cards, is only its fourth. The American adaptation of the BBC drama of the same name – which was itself adapted from the novel by Michael Dobbs – was created by Beau Willimon, and boasts Dobbs and BBC writer Andrew Davies among its scribes, and the impressive creative talent involved goes some way to explaining how the show has come so far in only 39 episodes.
The series has thus far charted the rise to power of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) – from influential U.S. Congressman to President of the United States – and has depicted all the grimy, unpleasant, and often criminal actions he has undertaken to reach the highest office in the land. By his side is his manipulative, and equally scheming (though, perhaps, less bloodthirsty) wife, Claire (Robin Wright...

We’ve reached the near mid-point of this Definitive List; 20 down, 30 to go. As we move forward, the story of “boy meets girl” becomes more complicated, as plenty of stumbling blocks stand in the way: lack of experience, insecurity, unsupportive parents, and, as in most cases, ego. So, when we watch all these films, what do we learn? Hundreds of romantic comedies end happily, but none end in the same way. Perhaps there’s a method to the madness, but the more we tread through these highlights, the more it’s clear that to make an impact, you have to change the game or perfect the existing one.

Before Sundance sets in motion another year in film—and the Academy celebrates its favorite achievements from the last one—we look ahead to 2016, from to-be-distributed festival circuit favorites (Cannes Palme d'Or winner "Dheepan") to highly anticipated blockbusters (the untitled fifth installment in the "Bourne" franchise). Let us know what you're looking forward to in the comments below. "War & Peace" (BBC / The Weinstein Co., January 18) Ok, I cheated—technically speaking, original "House of Cards" scribe Andrew Davies and "Peaky Blinders" director Tom Harper's adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's 19th century epic is a six-part miniseries set to air in the U.S. on A&E, Lifetime, and History this winter. But given the novel's 1,000-plus pages, that's pretty damn concise, and let's face it, an encyclopedic chronicle of tsarist Russia during the Napoleonic Wars is unlikely to receive the roadshow treatment. So say a...

He’s known for playing misfits in There Will Be Blood and Little Miss Sunshine – now the actor is turning his back on Hollywood to take on War And Peace
Paul Dano has the kind of body language that speaks before he does. On screen, he is often twisted, lopsided, stooped, crunched or otherwise cramped in a way that instantly and viscerally communicates vulnerability. Off screen, wandering into a cafe in Manhattan, he is mildly diffident, like someone who might try to read a book while walking along. “Oh my goodness!” he says vaguely as we settle in, and there is something about Dano’s politeness and thoughtfulness that makes one want to ring to congratulate his mother.
As an actor, the 31-year-old brings heft to the thinnest of scripts. Dano hasn’t had that many leading parts, but he is, to a certain kind of movie-goer, instantly and appreciably recognisable,...

Kicking off the week with some promotional duties, Lily James showed up in London’s Mayfair district for the premiere of her new adaptation of “War & Peace.”
The “Cinderella” hottie was in fine form as she hung out with co-star James Norton, posing for the paparazzi in an elegant black column dress with sequin accents.
Based on Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel, the BBC miniseries was written by Andrew Davies who warned that he stayed true to the sexuality of the story- “There is a certain amount of nudity. When you expect someone to be nude, they are,” he declared.

Since its publication in 1869, Russian author Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace has been hailed as a classic, and like numerous other classics, it has been adapted in several other mediums, from the stage to the big screen to the small screen and even on the radio. The last new version on television, however, last came in 2007, with the last adaptation of the novel happening on the stage in 2012 with Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.
BBC One, however, is poised to bring the classic to another audience in a new miniseries. Tom Harper takes on directing duties for the miniseries, which will run for six episodes of an hour each, while Andrew Davies takes on the task of adapting the classic. Downton Abbey and Cinderella‘s Lily James and Looper and There Will Be Blood‘s Paul Dano lead the cast, joined by Jim Broadbent, Gillian Anderson, and Stephen Rea.

It looks like there won't be a fifth season for the Mr. Selfridge TV series. "It's the last series," co-star Amanda Abbington reportedly told What's On TV, "We won't be doing any more, which will be really sad because it's been a part of my life for four years." While ITV hasn't confirmed or denied Abbington's statement, last year series creator Andrew Davies said, "It was always conceived of as four series."
Mr. Selfridge follows flamboyant businessman Harry Selfridge (Jeremy Piven) who decides to build the biggest and finest department store in the world at the "dead end" of Oxford Street in London. In addition to Piven and Abbington, the series stars Frances O'Connor, Katherine Kelly, Gregory Fitoussi, Aisling Loftus, and Trystan Gravelle.

Mr Selfridge star Amanda Abbington has stated that the ITV drama's upcoming fourth series will be its last.
It was confirmed back in March that the Jeremy Piven series would be returning for a fourth run, though the channel has not confirmed the show's long-term future.
"It's the last series," Abbington told What's On TV. "We won't be doing any more, which will be really sad because it's been a part of my life for four years."
Digital Spy reached out to ITV for comment, but the channel would not confirm if Abbington's statement is accurate.
Mr Selfridge creator Andrew Davies previously revealed that he had planned for Harry Selfridge's story to unfold over a four-series arc.
"It was always conceived of as four series - that is, if people liked it enough," he said last year. "People seem to love it, so I think we can do the four series.

Exclusive: British director Tom Harper has sharply criticised the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) over its decision to give his Hammer horror sequel The Woman In Black: Angel Of Death a 15 certificate.
Speaking in Rotterdam, where his political drama War Book opened Iffr last night, Harper questioned the grounds on which the classification for the horror sequel was made.
“Personally, I was disappointed it (Angel Of Death) was a 15,” Harper told Screen. “There was no blood, no swearing. Obviously, there are some uncomfortable scenes within it. It was always intended to be a 12A.”
The director said the filmmakers were presented by the BBFC with a “whole long list of - to my opinion - questionable reasons” as to why Angel Of Death was made a 15 rather than a 12A.
According to Harper, one of the moments highlighted by the BBFC was “a lady appears behind a door and a door slams”.
