Stanley Kubrick's 1960 Roman epic "Spartacus," based on Howard Fast's biographical novel about an enslaved man who led an uprising against the Roman Empire during the third Servile War in the 70s BC, was one of Universal Pictures' biggest hits. Working with a budget of 12 million (about 115 million in 2022 dollars), the film grossed over 60 million (about 575 million in 2022 dollars). It was nominated for six Academy Awards and won four, including Best Supporting Actor for Peter Ustinov.

Hamilton will debut on Disney+ on July 3rd, the start of a long holiday weekend. The Walt Disney Company paid good money for the Broadway phenomenon, a reported $75 million for the rights to the film, which features performances by the original cast (we wrote a primer on the cast and where they are now).

Making the Founding Fathers sing was truly revolutionary when Sherman Edwards’s musical debuted on Broadway in 1969. The plot traced how the Second Continental Congress decided on independence; there are lots of fun character moments but really no other story. Here’s a pleasant surprise: one of Rko’s most popular releases of 1948 has suddenly emerged in an uncut version that’s a full twelve minutes longer than anything most of us have seen. The gentle, family-oriented frontier tale has an attractive trio of star performers, excellent location work and a thoughtful, teasing script. I must have seen the truncated version five times, and yes, it did seem a tad abbreviated here and there. Loretta Young is the bondservant/un-kissed bride with a roving eye. William Holden is the initially unimaginative husband, while good old, Robert Mitchum is perfectly cast as a potential sexual fox-in-the-henhouse.

Credited to Stanley Kubrick, taking over from Anthony Mann (whose casting choices appear in abundance)after 11 days of shooting, this troubled epic from revered Lefties Dalton Trumbo and Howard Fast has become a touchstone of 60s cinema and for good reason — it’s less pious and more honestly moving than the comparatively overblown Ben-Hur.

Kirk Douglas always comes out fighting. I use the present tense, because it’s damn near impossible to think of this paragon of golden-age Hollywood stardom any other way.
Yes, his son Michael Douglas formally announced yesterday that his father had died at the Methuselah-level age of 103, but it’s still hard to think this pugnacious defender of the underdog is really gone. Say these three words aloud — “I am Spartacus” — and you’ll conjure up the image of Douglas, a strapping 44 years old at the time, bearing down on...

Kirk Douglas was not only one of the greatest actors of his generation — he was also one of Hollywood’s biggest risk takers.
The acting legend died at the age of 103, his son Michael Douglas revealed to People on Thursday.
The Oscar winner leaves behind a storied legacy, including the time he stuck his neck out to work with the blacklisted writer, Dalton Trumbo, on the now-classic 1960 film Spartacus, directed by Stanley Kubrick.
Douglas was also an executive producer on the project and enlisted Trumbo to author the script, which was based on a book by another blacklisted author, Howard Fast.

What can one say about a comedy that just limps along, even when an attractive cast does fine work every step of the way? Even the bit parts are creatively cast in this odd romp infected with a really bad case of The Cutes. Natalie Wood is at her best, but in service of dumb gags: let’s blow bubble gum bubbles! The result so upset Natalie that she ditched her studio contract. The roster of engaging talent includes Peter Falk (in suave leading man mode!), Dick Shawn (less grating than usual), Lila Kedrova & Lou Jacobi (showing real style), Jonathan Winters (wasted) and, of all people, Ian Bannen as Natalie Wood’s uncomprehending husband. Bannen is so good, he drags a real laugh or two from the material. The show has been beautifully remastered.

The ‘other’ Hollywood studio version of the Alamo story is quite good, with strong production values, exciting stunt battle action and something Republic Pictures didn’t manage very often, a solid screenplay. Sterling Hayden is Jim Bowie, this version’s central hero, with great backup from Anna Maria Alberghetti, Ernest Borgnine, J. Carrol Naish, and Ben Cooper. But best of all is that old hay-shaker Arthur Hunnicutt, as the movies’ best and most natural Davy Crockett.

As is annual tradition, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has announced this year’s 25 film set to join the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Selected for their “cultural, historic and/or aesthetic importance,” the films picked range from such beloved actioners as “Die Hard,” childhood classic “The Goonies,” the seminal “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and the mind-bending “Memento,” with plenty of other genres and styles represented among the list.
The additions span 1905 to 2000, and includes Hollywood blockbusters, documentaries, silent movies, animation, shorts, independent, and even home movies. The 2017 selections bring the number of films in the registry to 725.
“The selection of a film to the National Film Registry recognizes its importance to American cinema and the nation’s cultural and historical heritage,” Hayden said in an official statement. “Our love affair with motion pictures is a testament to their enduring power to enlighten, inspire and...

Since 1989, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has been accomplishing the important task of preserving films that “represent important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking.” From films way back in 1897 all the way up to 2004, they’ve now reached 725 films that celebrate our heritage and encapsulate our film history.
Today they’ve unveiled their 2017 list, which includes such Hollywood classics as Die Hard, Titanic, and Superman along with groundbreaking independent features like Yvonne Rainer’s Lives of Performers, Charles Burnett’s To Sleep with Anger, and Barbara Loden’s Wanda. Also making this list are a pair of Kirk Douglas-led features, Ace in the Hole and Spartacus, as well as Christopher Nolan’s Memento and more. Check out the full list below and you can watch some films on the registry for free here.

Most of us love the Trumbo-Douglas-Kubrick thinking man's leftist gladiator epic, and after several iffy disc presentations this exacting digital restoration follows through on the photochemical reconstruction done 25 years ago. Spartacus
Written by Dalton Trumbo
Directed by Stanley Kubrick
USA, 1960
There is a lot to sift through when it comes to Spartacus, before even getting to the film itself. There is the controversial credit bestowed to previously blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. There is the firing of original director Anthony Mann about three weeks into the shoot (some say he asked to leave), followed by the subsequently hasty hiring of Stanley Kubrick over the course of a weekend. There is then the ensuing animosity between the obstinate Kubrick and the headstrong star/producer Kirk Douglas. Finally, there is the film’s placement in popular culture, with ubiquitous spoofs and spinoffs. If one is able to look beyond the noise of its tumultuous production, however, Spartacus remains one of the finest epics to ever emerge from the Hollywood studio system.

Back in 1953, Roman Holiday was a raging success. The Audrey Hepburn-headlined romantic comedy picked up seven Oscar nominations, and its box office run brought in $12m off a $1.5m budget (if you go by inflation-adjusted totals, that'd be receipts of well over $150m). Furthermore, come the night of the Academy Awards, further riches were to be bestowed on the film. Audrey Hepburn took home Oscar gold for Best Actress, whilst the costume designer, Edith Head, was rewarded for her work.

Steven Zaillian will produce as well as rewrite Montezuma which has Javier Bardem interest in the role of Hernan Cortes, a Spanish conquistador, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The DreamWorks project helmed by Steven Spielberg was originally written by Donald Trumbo in the 50s and follows the relationship between Aztec emperor Montezuma and Cortes in the 1960s. This was intended to actually have Kirk Douglas on board who starred in the beloved Spartacus which Trumbo scripted based on the Howard Fast novel.

As mentioned in part one, the film industry is a good place for ideas but not all those ideas will ultimately reach the big screen. Many projects are announced each year and most of them will reach the pre-production stage but many will go no further than that. Only about half of the films announced will ever be completed. For various reasons, many intended movies will just fade away. Some may die during the script writing stage, while other will actually begin production or even filming before the whims of fortune cause the demise of the project. Here is the second part of a list of 25 tantalizing unmade films that could have been classics.

The writer of 300 is reportedly developing a 'less fictionalised' version of the slave story than Stanley Kubrick's 1960 epic
Spartacus is being brought back to the big screen by 300 writer Michael B Gordon, according to Variety.
The latest production claiming to be the Thracian slave leader follows Stanley Kubrick's celebrated 1960 epic and Starz television's errrr ... "fun" 2010 TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
Spartacus, who lived between 109-71 BC, was a slave under the Romans. He trained as a gladiator, escaped from slavery and eventually went on to lead an army of up to 120,000 freed slaves and gladiators in the Third Servile War (73-71 BC), where it's thought that he died in battle.
Gordon's remake will reportedly be "less fictionalised" than Kubrick's four-time Oscar-winning version, which was based on a novel by Howard Fast.

When is a Stanley Kubrick film not a Stanley Kubrick film? The answer: when legendary auteur was a hired gun for the one and only time in his career. Kirk Douglas installed Kubrick as director of the Roman epic Spartacus after sacking original choice Anthony Mann. Douglas and Kubrick had previously worked together on a much more recognisably Kubrickian film – the 1957 World War One drama ‘Paths of Glory’ – but on Spartacus things were different.
A big-budget, high-risk project produced by Douglas himself, reportedly after the actor failed to win the title role in 1959’s wildly successful Ben-Hur, Spartacus needed to be big at the box office and Douglas, perhaps understandably, wanted to harness Kubrick’s talent in a very direct and unflashy way. It’s the director’s most mainstream work – a picture he all but disowned entirely and which convinced him to from that point only make films on...

.Spartacus. remains great entertainment and even though it.s more well known now as the least .Kubrickian. of all of Stanley Kubrick.s films. It still impresses as a massive epic scale production with a strong cast surrounded by thousands of extras. So how does it hold up in high-def for its Blu-ray debut? Starting life as a left-leaning Howard Fast novel, Kirk Douglas was looking for his own .Ben-Hur. but always liked to push the envelope a bit i.e. with Kubrick.s own .Paths of Glory.. He hired the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo to adapt Fast.s novel and pose parallels to the Jewish people along with the current politics of the time. Enlisting James Stewart and Gary Cooper fave Anthony...

"You can't put words back in your mouth. What you can do, is spread false gossip so people think that everything that's been said is untrue ... It's like the end of Spartacus. I have seen that movie half a dozen times and I still don't know who the real Spartacus is. And that is what makes that movie a classic whodunnit." -- The Office
I know very well there isn't a single Cinematical reader who doesn't know who the real Spartacus is. There's probably little children who haven't even seen Stanley Kubrick's Roman epic who know who the real Spartacus is because the movie has become such a cultural touchstone. But just because it's ubiquitous doesn't mean you shouldn't sit down and watch the movie again, especially since it's playing for free on SlashControl. Its lengthy runtime might make it a little uncomfortable to view on your laptop, but...
