Welcome to this review of a special pre-All Out Aew Dark: Elevation. We’ve got Tony Schiavone and Matt Menard on commentary for this bonus episode so let’s see what the show has to offer!
Match #1: Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo def. Gpa and Laynie Luck
My Thoughts: The only thing I took away from this match was that a) I’m tired of the Sammy and Tay schtick and b) How the f*ck does that pair get three matches in two weeks whilst Eddie Kingston is stuck with one match on the All Out pre-show? Screams a desperate attempt to squash the “Sammy is har to work with” rumours Tbh.
My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #2: Swerve in our Glory (Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee) def. Jah-c and Storm Grayson
My Thoughts: Swerve in our Glory get a quick tune-up match prior to their All Out...

Two of singer-songwriter Terry Allen’s Eighties-era releases will be reissued by the indie label Paradise of Bachelors this May: 1980’s Smokin’ the Dummy and 1983’s Bloodlines. Both albums have both been long out of print, having last been reissued as a joint single album in 1997 by Sugar Hill Records, and are currently unavailable on streaming services.

By 1983, Rickie Lee Jones had had her share of surreal experiences. Her debut album, 1979’s Rickie Lee Jones, had transformed her into America’s leading boho pop star, thanks to its hit “Chuck E.’s in Love.” She’d made the cover of Rolling Stone, and her followup record, 1981’s Pirates, was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of that year. She was also in an on-again, off-again relationship with fellow songwriter Tom Waits and had begun using heroin.
In the summer of 1983, at age 28, Jones’ life appeared to be settling down.

After his last album Concrete & Mud was released in 2018, Sam Morrow found that he was often getting tagged with the “outlaw country” label. That album’s brawny mix of country-funk and retro boogie nodded to the influence of Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed, undoubtedly, but the Houston native wasn’t entirely comfortable with the categorization.
“Even when I say it out loud, it makes me cringe a little bit,” he says, calling from his current home in Los Angeles. “’Outlaw’ sounds weird. I’m not an outlaw. I play video...

Sam Morrow doubles down on the muscular country-funk of his 2018 album Concrete and Mud with “Rosarita,” the first release from the California performer’s upcoming LP. Titled Gettin’ By on Gettin’ Down, the project is due October 30th via Forty Below Records.
Morrow penned “Rosarita” with fellow Californian Jaime Wyatt and it makes use of a strutting drum groove, interlocking rhythmic guitar lines, and dive-bombing, wah-wah slide guitar leads to set the stage for Morrow’s gritty vocals. He sings of a favorite source of pleasure, which turns out to...

Happy birthday to Linda Ronstadt’s New Wave album Mad Love, released 40 years ago, in March 1980. It’s the weirdest oddity in her catalog, with three Elvis Costello covers. Mad Love is forgotten by time, written out of her official history. Not even Linda has a kind word for this album. In the acclaimed 2019 documentary, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice — which treats every one of her career moves as a stroke of brilliance — Mad Love doesn’t get mentioned much. But for some of us, it’s one...

Paul Barrere, the singer and guitarist for Little Feat that also had tracks on ten soundtracks, has died. He passed on Saturday from complications of liver disease at UCLA Hospital at age 71.
“It is with great sorrow that Little Feat must announce the passing of our brother guitarist, Paul Barrere, this morning at UCLA Hospital,” said a statement on the band’s official web page. “We ask for your kindest thoughts and best wishes to go out especially to his widow Pam and children Gabriel, Genevieve, and Gillian, and to all the fans who were his extended family.” The statement was signed by members Bill Payne, Sam Clayton, Fred Tackett, Kenny Gradney, and Gabe Ford
Little Feat is currently on tour, but Barrere was too ill to join them. He had auditioned as a bass player for the group when it was first formed, but in his words, “as a...

The Flying Burrito Brothers’ 1969 debut never made it higher than 164 on the Billboard 200. But the album’s country-rock sound cast a shadow almost from day one, influencing artists ranging from the Rolling Stones to Tom Petty, Beck, Uncle Tupelo and entire generations of future Americana luminaries. The Burrito Brothers weren’t the first artists to hybridize country and rock. Buck Owens and His Buckaroos, for one, got there first, on songs like “Act Naturally.” But The Gilded Palace of Sin was druggier, sexier and more youthful — as much about the...

A leading light in L.A.’s country community for years, Sam Morrow leapt onto the national stage with this year’s Concrete and Mud, cracking the Top 10 of the Americana charts along the way. Full of gruff stomp and funky, phased Telecasters, that album forms the bedrock of his conversation with the Foo Fighters’ Chris Shiflett on today’s episode of Walking the Floor.
“Finally, an Americana artist that has some punk-rock roots!” Shiflett exclaims, happy to speak with another songwriter whose path to Americana music was less than conventional.

J.D. Souther John David Souther Black Rose Home by Dawn (Omnivore) J.D. Souther's songs are better known as sung by other people, which is good for his bank account but puzzling if you've heard his fine LPs. I wouldn't be surprised if more people nowadays know of him from his acting on the TV series Nashville than from his career in music. If there's any justice, these three reissues will redress that imbalance.
After this Texan moved to L.A., he teamed with Glenn Frey in the band Longbranch/Pennywhistle (they kept co-writing songs after Frey founded the Eagles, notably "New Kid in Town"), lived upstairs from Jackson Browne, and dated Linda Ronstadt.
Browne told him to audition for David Geffen, who'd just started the Asylum label, and that led directly to 1972's John David Souther. Its original ten-song program, which kicks off with "The Fast One," one of...

"Radiator Sister" - The Mynabirds Generals (Saddle Creek) - Infectious, bubble-gum snappin' tunes abound on this sophomore long player from singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn. All aptly produced by Richard Swift, but for my limited ducats this iPod-friendly ditty is the bees-ness. Equal parts Bow Wow Wow and T.Rex, with its two-note piano hook.
"Among the Leaves" Sun Kil Moon Among the Leaves (Caldo Verde) - Mark Kozelek remains steadfast in his musical offerings; familiar turf, but still so damn compelling. Alt tunings, heartfelt ballads, and lyrical dexterity all remain firmly in place. The gentle tug of his band behind him keep...

It feels great when bands are excited enough by their A.V. Undercover performances to give them an official release. You may have seen the Wye Oak 7" in the past, or the They Might Be Giants compilation that included "Tubthumping." Iron & Wine is the latest outfit to join that illustrious club: Available for pre-order today is the "Two Sides Of George" single, which includes I&W's cover of George Michael's "One More Try" (from their Undercover session) as well as a cover of Little Feat's "Trouble" (by Lowell George, hence the title of the single). Little Feat co-founder Richie Hayward has passed away after contracting pneumonia as he battled liver cancer. The jam band drummer, who has played with Eric Clapton and Robert Plant, died on Thursday, August 12 at a hospital near Vancouver, Canada. He was 64. His publicist, Bridget Nolan, tells the Associated Press, "He was waiting for a liver transplant."
Hayward formed Little Feat in 1969 with frontman Lowell George, Bill Payne and Roy Estrada and the band became known for songs such as "Willin". They split in 1979 following the death of George, but the surviving members staged a successful reunion in 1987 and have been touring ever since.
Hayward's last performance with the group took place on July 11. "He's really been a beacon to a whole generation of younger drummers," singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, who performed with other musicians at one of the benefit concerts held to help pay for Hayward's medical bills, said as quoted by The Vancouver Sun.

Hollywood's guilds, unions and collection societies are sitting on a gold mine of unclaimed residuals and royalties. They're holding more than $150 million for tens of thousands of actors, writers, directors and musicians they're trying to locate.
I began looking into this recently when I learned that my late father had a small piece of this pie coming to him.
My dad, Larry Robb, was a bit player and longtime SAG member. He had a small role on an episode of "Kung Fu," played Mad Dog in a movie called "Star Hops" and had a couple of lines in the telefilm "Frank Nitti: The Enforcer." We went to the premiere.
My dad died broke 20 years ago; there was no will and no estate. But I recently discovered that he'd left me some money after all -- in the form of unclaimed SAG residuals.
It turns out that SAG has more than...
