Boosted by world-class incentives, Spain’s Canary Islands has attracted the shoots of some of the higher-profile movies on earth from “In the Heart of the Sea” to “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Eternals.”
Now, however, a homegrown Canary Islands cinema is bursting onto the scene, a Canary Island New Wave cinema lifting off, hitting festivals and making ever more insistent production news.
If a date can be attributed to the event, it may be March’s Malaga Film Festival.
Already playing Berlin’s Forum, Macu Machín’s “Undergrowth” won ZonaZine, Málaga Festival’s edgier main sidebar.
Two Canary Islands projects were pitched at the Malaga Festival Fund & Co-Production Event (Maff): Lucía Pérez’s Locarno hit “Ever & the Sharks” and Víctor Moreno’s anticipated fiction feature debut “The Outside.”

Jacob Elordi may need to approach his Saturday Night Live hosting debut with baby steps.
The NBC sketch show released the first promo Wednesday for this weekend’s episode, which Elordi will lead alongside musical guest Reneé Rapp. The episode marks SNL’s first new season 49 installment since Kate McKinnon hosted with singer Billie Eilish on Dec. 16.
In the footage, Elordi is seen at the top of the stage in Studio 8H as he attempts to descend the three steps that hosts typically strut down on their way to performing the opening monologue. But castmembers Punkie Johnson and Marcello Hernández notice that Elordi can’t quite wrap his head around the brief walk.
“They all make it look so easy,” Elordi says to himself in a pep talk about tackling the steps. A confused Hernández overhears and asks, “Is he looking at the stairs?”

Wild in the Streets: Hernandez Explores Toxic Trifecta of Violence, Masculinity and Poverty in Dour Debut
With a streetwise miserabilism as virile as anything from the pages of Dickens, Fabian Hernández descends upon the poverty stricken streets of Bogota in his debut, A Man. A narrative as straightforward as its blunt title would suggest, it’s a feral, often troubling tale of survival in a bleak, hopeless world which defines many contemporary narratives arriving from Latin and South America.
As stark as any piece of recent neorealism, the success of Hernández’s film rests on the shoulders of a young protagonist performed by a first-time actor mired in the day-to-day business of survival.…...

Madrid-based Rock & Ruz – the production company of Netflix’s “Nowhere,” which has just been confirmed by Netflix as its most-viewed Spanish-language movie of all time – has pacted new projects with Italy’s Leonardo Fasoli, a head-writer of “Gomorrah” and creator of “ZeroZeroZero,” and Spain-based Alejandro Hernández, a co-writer on Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War” and “La Fortuna.”
Targeting the key to high-end fiction success in Europe – its screenwriters – and added to “Nowhere” and an upcoming Spanish-Mexican remake of hit Korean movie “Miracle in Cell No. 7” – the freshly-announced projects mark out Rock & Ruz as a new and significant Spain-based international player.
As international markets – both theatrical and global streamers – are asking for bigger films with identifiable audiences, Rock & Ruz’s bold slate looks like a ready source of titles.

New Amazon Prime Video series “Los Farad,” released Dec. 12, takes a look at the Cold War from one of its strangest geo-political hubs, 1980s Málaga. The action-packed show follows a family that is normal in many ways, despite earning a luxurious living as arms traffickers.
Part of a determinedly diverse and burgeoning lineup at Spain’s Prime Video, “Los Farad” is a high-profile prestige package starring Miguel Herrán – who plays Rio in “Money Heist” and Cristián in “Elite” – and the on-the-rise Susana Abaitúa, who delivered a tearaway performance in Netflix rom-com “Crazy About Her.”
Co-created by Alejandro Aménabar co-scribe Alejandro Hernández, “Los Farad” is directed by Mariano Barroso in his fifth collaboration with Hernández.
Emerging as one of Spain’s most notable drama series directors in an age of premium fiction, Barroso has extracted terrific, nuanced performances in series set in Spain’s recent past, such as “The Invisible Line” and “What the Future Holds.

The toxicity of patriarchal masculinity has become such a well-worn trope in pop culture (and especially in recent Colombian cinema) that it’s hard to remember its effects continue unabated in streets and households all over the world, and in that Latin American country specifically. And so, while Fabián Hernández’s central concerns in his simply-titled film, “A Man” (“Un Varón”), are all too familiar, his tale of a young man living in a shelter in the center of Bogotá who cannot escape the violence of the world of the streets around him, emerges nonetheless as a powerful portrait of the country’s inescapable machismo.
When Carlos (Dilan Felipe Ramírez Espitia) sits down to get a haircut, he has only one request: He wants one fit for a “varón.” Yet the English translation (“a man”) doesn’t quite capture the specificity of such a word in Colombian slang, for “varón...

Buenos Aires — Mr. Miyagi Films co-founder David Matamoros, firmly established as one of Barcelona’s leading specialists in international film finance, is now in post-production on his solo feature directorial debut, “Astronaut” (“Astronauta”) as Matamoros explores novel movie financing sources as a producer while building co-productions across Europe and Latin America.
Produced by Mr. Miyagi, Sombra Cine and Mother Superior and backed by Spain’s Icaa, Argentina’s Incaa, Uruguay’s Pua and Catalan pubcaster TV3, “Astronaut” which is set for delivery in early 2024, weighs in as a queer romcom which questions classic romcom narratives, asking in a bigger picture what now form bedrock affective family relationships in a modern age.

As the ongoing battles in state legislatures over classroom curricula indicate, history – or at least the curation of which stories to teach, and from which perspectives – is subjective. So too is Hollywood’s rich tradition of biopics, which imply to audiences whose lives are worthy of immortalizing on film. Whether in textbooks or onscreen, most of the protagonists of our shared cultural history have belonged to the same demographic: Elvis, Oppenheimer, Jobs, Zuckerberg, Hughes. Those individuals were undoubtedly impactful, but Hollywood has also devoted resources to spotlighting relatively lesser-known white men, such as Jordan Belfort, Frank Abagnale and Hugh Glass (and that’s just one movie star’s filmography).
Biopics about people of color exist, of course, particularly when it comes to undeniable icons like Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. But one community – the second largest racial or ethnic group in the country – has been particularly underrepresented when it comes...
