Rush frontman-bassist Geddy Lee, Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley appear in a new documentary about the origins and high points of pioneering Toronto radio station Cfny.
Veteran film producer Matt Schichter makes his directorial debut with Cfny: The Spirit of Radio, which has just wrapped post production. Other artists appearing in the doc include Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division), Lol Tolhurst (The Cure), Emily Haines (Metric), Ben Kowalewicz (Billy Talent) and Andy McCluskey (Omd).
During the 1970s and 1980s, major record companies and large independent labels relied on records being played on local radio in major markets to promote commercial releases. Toronto’s Cfny, which launched in a small city suburb in 1960, eventually became hugely influential in breaking punk and new wave acts after evolving into an alternative radio station on the FM dial.

Rourke joined the Smiths soon after his friend Marr and singer Morrissey formed the group in 1982. His basslines often locked in alongside Mike Joyce‘s drumming to create a steady rhythm section that contrasted with Marr’s intricate melodies.

Morrissey has paid tribute to his late Smiths bandmate Andy Rourke, who recently passed away at the age of 59 following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
“Sometimes one of the most radical things you can do is to speak clearly,” Morrissey wrote on his website. “I just hope … wherever Andy has gone … that he’s Ok. He will never die as long as his music is heard. He didn’t ever know his own power, and nothing that he played had been played by someone else.”
The former Smiths vocalist continued, “His distinction was so terrific and unconventional and he proved it could be done. He was also very, very funny and very happy, and post-Smiths, he kept a steady identity — never any manufactured moves. I suppose, at the end of it all, we hope to feel that we were valued. Andy need not worry about that.”

Andy Rourke, bass guitarist of The Smiths, one of the most influential British bands of the 1980s, has died after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer, his former bandmate Johnny Marr said Friday. He was 59.
In a lengthy post on Instagram, guitarist and songwriter Marr paid tribute to Rourke, who he first met when both were schoolboys in 1975.
“Throughout our teens we played in various bands around south Manchester before making our reputations with The Smiths from 1982 to 1987, and it was on those Smiths records that Andy reinvented what it is to be a bass guitar player,” Marr said.
During their short time together as a four-piece band, The Smiths deliberately stayed away from the mainstream of popular music, garnering a cult following on the independent music scene.

Andy Rourke, bassist of The Smiths, has died at the age of 59 following a battle with cancer.
Rourke’s death was announced by his longtime friend and former bandmate, Johnny Marr. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer,” Marr wrote. “Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans. Rourke first met Marr at the age of 11 while living in Manchester. As teenagers, they frequently played music together and formed several bands, with Rourke eventually picking up the bass guitar. In 1982, after Marr and Morrissey formed their own band together, they invited Rourke to come aboard as bassist. The group, which was rounded out by drummer Mike Joyce, became known as The Smiths.

The Smashing Pumpkins headlined Saturday night at their own The World Is a Vampire fest in Mexico City, a festival that also featured Peter Hook and the Light on the lineup. Both of those bands share the same bassist — Jack Bates, Hook’s son — so it was only natural that “Hooky” join Billy Corgan and company for a set-ending performance of Joy Division’s “No Love Lost.”
Hook and the Pumpkins previously partially collaborated in 2021 when Hook, Bates and guitarist Jeff Schroeder re-recorded Joy Division’s “Ceremony” to raise funds for Sweet Relief.

There are a few different languages in Davy Chou’s “Return to Seoul” — French, Korean, a smattering of English — but perhaps the most important is music. The film’s initial third follows protagonist Freddie’s (Park Ji-min) first trip to Korea as a young adult after her adoption by a French family, where she almost stumbles into meeting her biological father (Oh Kwang-rok); throughout the film but especially in this section, Chou emphasizes the failure of translation to express the fullness of what a person wants to say, as Freddie’s biological aunt (Kim Sung-young) softens both Freddie’s sharply defined boundaries and her father’s boundless longing for connection.
There’s something tragically incomplete about Freddie: She’s French but with a piece of herself missing, Korean but alienated from that culture. Never truly home anywhere she goes, she rages against her sense of abandonment. It’s like Chou...

Elia Einhorn was about to turn 21 years sober when he set out to fill a vacuum he’d noticed in the music world: There were few places sober musicians could turn to for day-to-day advice and help navigating a world where alcohol and drugs often flow freely. Addiction and recovery stories — both the triumphs and tragedies — are among the most common narratives in popular music, but Einhorn saw that, while there were resources like Alcoholics Anonymous and MusiCares that could help musicians get sober, more practical support was lacking.

That’s saying something; Albarn has always proposed Gorillaz as a space beyond and between pop music’s borders, and over the decades everyone from Mark E. Smith to Bobby Womack to Pusha T has felt at home swinging by to chill. It’s a project that feels especially worthwhile in the era of Brexit and hyper-nationalism, even if the albums it produces can often be so intentionally all-over-the place as to sometimes seem nowhere at all.

Joy Division/New Order’s Peter Hook discusses his friendship with Dennis Anderson and Lois Kahlert in a new clip — the New York couple are the subject of Chris Cassidy’s new documentary Dennis and Lois, out April 28th.
“They’re iconic in the way that they were there when a movement started,” Hook tells the camera as shots of him performing “Ceremony” play in the background. “When Manchester and New Order came to America and the way it affected the world, [it] was because of New York and people like them.

Mark Lanegan composed his upcoming album, Straight Songs of Sorrow, as a companion piece to his gritty memoir, Sing Backwards and Weep, which chronicles his drug use and time in Screaming Trees in the Eighties and Nineties.
Wednesday, he dropped “Stockholm City Blues,” which finds him looking back regretfully on a visit to Sweden’s capital, feeling junk sick late at night. “I pay for this pain I’m running through my blood,” he sings somberly over loosely plucked acoustic guitar and cinematic strings. “You couldn’t ever tell me when enough’s enough.

Gorillaz recruit Peter Hook for their New Order-inspired new song “Aries,” the latest installment in the cartoon rockers’ Song Machine series.
Damon Albarn and his animated outfit have ably assumed the musical costume of their featured guest, and — buoyed by Hook’s signature bass sound — have created a track reminiscent of New Order’s Factory Records heyday.
The accompanying video, directed by Gorillaz chief animator Jamie Hewlett, finds the band’s Albarn-avatar 2D and Murdoc riding a motorcycle along a photonegative landscape with a rust-colored sky. It’s unclear when the video was created,...

Alt-rock stalwart Mark Lanegan unveiled a chilling new song, “Bleed All Over,” from his upcoming album, Straight Songs of Sorrow, set to arrive May 8th.
The track boasts an icy post-punk edge thanks to the tight skip of the drums, the queasy synth trails during the verse and rubbery plunks during the hook. Anchoring the song with some semblance of warmth, though, is the constant strum of an acoustic guitar and Lanegan’s resonant vocals as he pleads, “Baby, baby, baby don’t you say it’s over/Now that...

Less than a year after Mark Lanegan released his 2019 LP, Something’s Knocking, the singer-songwriter returns with a new album he was inspired to record while writing his upcoming memoir.
Straight Songs of Sorrow arrives May 8th, just over a week after Lanegan’s memoir, Sing Backwards and Weep, hits shelves on April 28th. On Wednesday, Lanegan shared the companion album’s first song, “Skeleton Key,” a seven-minute track that recalls Lanegan’s bluesy Nineties solo output.

Exclusive: Witchery Pictures, a drama label owned by All3Media, is developing a returning series about The Hacienda, an iconic British night club founded by New Order.
Deadline has learned that the company has acquired the rights to The Hacienda: How Not to Run a Club, which was written by New Order and Joy Division bassist Peter Hook in 2009.
It is being adapted into a six-part series by Ed Whitmore, who most recently wrote Manhunt, which became ITV’s highest-rated new drama since the launch of Broadchurch in 2013 when it was watched by 9M viewers. Whitmore has also written for shows including Sky’s Strike Back and the BBC’s Silent Witness.
Hook’s book recounts The Hacienda’s rise and fall in chronological order, with a chapter dedicated to each year of the club’s existence. It was set up in 1982 in Manchester, was bankrolled by New Order, and became...

The Joy Division story has been told many times, yet it never stops seeming too bizarre to be true. Jon Savage, best known for his classic punk history, England’s Dreaming, was one of the band’s first chroniclers in the 1970s, but he tells the tale in a new way in his excellent new book This Searing Light, The Sun and Everything Else. It’s the ultimate oral history of one of rock’s most haunting legends, in the words of the band, their friends, enemies and witnesses. Savage...

Joy Division formed in the summer of 1976 after bassist Peter Hook and guitarist Bernard Sumner felt the spark to start a band after seeing the Sex Pistols. They put out two full-lengths of icy, bass-driven post-punk before the band ended in 1980 after frontman Ian Curtis died by suicide. The rest of the band members moved forward under the name New Order.
Now Hook, who has had an acrimonious relationship with his sometime bandmates since his departure from New Order in 2007, is auctioning off many of the things he’s held...

Smashing Pumpkins celebrated their 30th anniversary Thursday with a guest-filled concert that featured Courtney Love joining the band onstage for four songs.
Love led Billy Corgan and company on a pair of Hole songs, “Celebrity Skin” and “Malibu” – both co-written by Corgan – and remained onstage to assist the Smashing Pumpkins on “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.” (“Only the chorus on this, right?” Love asked, admitting she didn’t know the rest of the song’s lyrics.) Happy New Year! It's been a tumultuous year for me and for many of us of a certain age. I lost a brother. The world lost a slew of pop culture -- Carrie Fisher, Alan Richman, Craig Sager, John Glenn -- and music icons -- Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, et al. One comfort for me was music and my rediscovery of vinyl. The warm, comforting sound of analog became my daily meditative fix. Quite literarily. Seeking out vinyl "nuggets" became a quest to help me deal with my own pain and depression. Chasing down albums that I owned thirty years, abadonded at the advent of those shiny new things called compact discs. Restorative analog power reigned o'er me. One of my chief caveats: I would not purchase anything on vinyl that I already owned on compact disc. Well, that rule didn't last long as I found comfort in...

Hey, music fans and friends, it's time once again to share my favorite music from 2015.
The songs on my year-end list are not what I consider true "singles" but rather my favorite 25 songs from 2015. I've not heard all the amazing music released this past year, but I do consume a healthy dose of tunes every single day. Below are 13 of those songs with Youtube links if you can't access my Spotify list. Let's proceed, shall we?
1. "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" - Father John Misty - I Love You Honeybear
Former Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman has quickly become my favorite young singer-songwriter. His detail to imagery in both audio and album artwork have very few peers, too. (See image above.)
2. "Rose Mary y Yo" - Carlos Timón - Solar Rapé
Some have said, me included, that this music spins like a Spanish version of Belle & Sebastian meets Jobim!

Diy, dark arts and chartbusters pepper this idiosyncratic story of the Joke’s four-decade career
Shaun Pettigrew’s exhaustive account of Killing Joke’s four-decade career is really a fans-only job, although it gradually loosens the cloak of mystique drawn around this band’s shoulders. Possibly spooked by frontman Jaz Coleman’s thousand-yard stare, Pettigrew takes his subjects’ dabbling in the darker arts seriously, devoting entire sidebars to runes and numerology. (Less serious: guest witness Peter Hook, who shrugs off such Kerrang!-friendly Satanism with the priceless: “I’m from Salford. Why would the devil scare me?”) Between wobbly VHS footage of continental music shows and spinning NME headlines, Pettigrew uncovers ample evidence of erratic personalities, yet he’s equally attuned to fluctuations in their scowling sound – the initial Diy flourishes, the artful lacquer of their mid-80s chartbusters, the harder edge regained once the spotlight moved elsewhere. Throughout, Coleman remains fascinatingly idiosyncratic,...

Sam Smith is set to claim the first ever chart-topping Bond theme on Friday with 'Writing's On The Wall'.
The Spectre song currently has double the combined sales of its closest competitor, Justin Bieber's 'What Do You Mean?'.
22 best and worst (pre-Spectre) Bond theme songs ranked: Every single's here, but which are classics and which need their 00 status revoked?
To date none of the previous bond themes have claimed the number one spot in the UK, with Adele's 'Skyfall' and Duran Duran's 'A View To A Kill' narrowly missing the position and peaking at number two.
Meanwhile R City and Adam Levine's 'Locked Away' is at three, Sigala's 'Easy Love' slips two places to four and The Weeknd's 'Can't Feel My Face' completes the Top 5.
Nick Brewer is set to enter the charts at eight with 'Talk To Me', which samples...

Alicja Bachleda-Curus played the character Anya Oliwa, B.J.'s er close "friend," stated that she is hard at work on a sequel that could release sometime in 2017.
"I'm working on a video game, first part of which I have already made," she stated. (Via Eurogamer) "Now we're making a second one, which will take two more years. I played this game as a child. I was very happy when I got to the point where I could shoot Hitler."
The creative director of the first game said he would love to make a sequel and has plenty of ideas, and Machine Games has stated that a follow up was possible depending on the success of the first game. Well the first game did fairly well, and it was well received by fans.
