Apple is working on a “Prince of Tides” drama series, based on the best-selling 1986 novel by the late Pat Conroy, an individual with knowledge of project confirmed to TheWrap.
Barbra Streisand directed and starred in the 1991 film version in which Nick Nolte played Tom Wingo, a man who develops a relationship with his late sister’s therapist (Streisand) while coming to terms with his traumatic past. The film grossed 45 million on an estimated budget of 30 million and was nominated for seven Academy Awards including best picture, best actor for Nolte, and best adapted screenplay for Conroy and co-writer Becky Johnston.
Tate Taylor, who wrote and directed 2011’s “The Help,” will write and also executive produce the adaptation alongside John Norris under their Wyolah Entertainment banner. Craig Anderson and Sharon Hall also executive produce. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.

The Prince of Tides is the latest high-profile feature film that is being eyed for a television spinoff.
Deadline understands that The Help director Tate Taylor is developing a small-screen adaptation of the 1991 Barbra Streisand-fronted film for Apple.
The project is believed to be in the very early stages of development.
The film tells the story of a New York psychiatrist (Streisand) who is treating Sally (Melinda Dillon), an emotionally scarred woman who finds it helpful to discuss her South Carolina family’s troubled history with her twin brother (Nick Nolte). He and the psychiatrist find themselves drawn together by their equally turbulent pasts, and they form an alliance that ultimately leads to romance.
Based on Pat Conroy’s book and adapted for screen by Conroy and Becky Johnston, the film was directed by Streisand.

Apple is developing a series version of “The Prince of Tides.”
The series would be a remake of the 1991 film of the same name, which was itself an adaptation of the 1986 novel by Pat Conroy. Like the film, the series would follow Tom Wingo, who travels to New York after his sister attempts suicide. While there, he develops a relationship with his sister’s therapist, Susan Lowenstein, while also delving into painful memories from his childhood.
Tate Taylor will write and executive produce the adaptation, with John Norris executive producing with Taylor under their Wyolah Entertainment banner. Craig Anderson and Sharon Hall also executive produce. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.
Sources say that scripts are still being completed for the series. Apple does not comment on projects in development.

Roberto Bentivegna, co-writer for the Ridley Scott-directed “House of Gucci,” developed most of the script over Zoom when he was stuck in Colombia during the onset of the pandemic. And yet, for a virtual screenwriting experience, it went off without a hitch.
“The process was very smooth,” Bentivegna told TheWrap about the process of writing the script. “I read the script in February of 2019, and we spent a couple of months casting the movie,” he said. “After that I left to go to Bogota, Colombia, which is where I am right now and the pandemic started and I got stuck here. It was really just me Ridley, Giannina [Facio Scott] his wife and the producer — and then every now and again, Adam Driver would show up on Zooms unannounced [with] questions and concerns and comments about about his character.”

The fight for women to be recognized for their directorial achievements stretches back for decades, but, too often, the screenwriters aren’t given that same spotlight. However, this year presents a unique situation where female filmmakers have also penned the top awards contenders for adapted screenplay. These leading contenders include Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”), Rebecca Hall (“Passing”) and Siân Heder (“Coda”).
If three of the writer-directors are nominated for best adapted screenplay, it’ll be the most female-written films recognized since 1991, which included “Europa Europa” (Agnieszka Holland), “Fried Green Tomatoes” (Fannie Flagg and Carol Sobieski) and “The Prince of Tides”. If all four manage to receive noms, it would be the most in Academy history, as well as the most that have been directed by women.
Three of the women were recognized by the USC Scripter Awards, whose previous nominees have a solid translation to Academy attention.

For 15 years filmmaker Ridley Scott wrestled with finding the perfect feature adaptation of Sara Gay Forden’s novel about the murder of Maurizio Gucci by ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. At one point Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie were even circling the project. However, the 544-page book proved a challenge for several screenwriters. That is until UK born, Columbia University alum and Black List screenwriter Roberto Bentivegna arrived with a Godfather-inspired, couture and dry-humored take; something Scott could visually wrap his arms around. The MGM-United Artists Releasing feature has awakened cautious adult moviegoers during the pandemic with the biggest debut to date at $22M over 5-days, a current running domestic B.O. of $36.2M on its way to $70M.

Jared Leto has come a long way since the days of expertly leaning against lockers. The Academy Award winner for “Dallas Buyers Club” (2014) currently stars in Ridley Scott’s new film “House of Gucci,” though you probably won’t recognize him. A man known for altering his appearance and disappearing into characters, he’s once again undergone a remarkable transformation to play the balding and overweight Paolo Gucci. However, beneath all the makeup, he’s still Jared Leto, which means it’s probably not surprising that his performance in the film has him staring down the possibility of a nomination for supporting actor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Some might consider watching biopics and other "based on a true story" movies to have a built-in downside, given that we generally know the ins and outs of these infamous stories and how they're fated to end. These individuals, sadly, are missing out on gems like the Pablo Larraín's Princess Diana film "Spencer" and, most recently, Ridley Scott's "House of Gucci." Chronicling the story of the absurdly rich Gucci family and the empire they built selling designer fashion, Scott and screenwriters Roberto Bentivegna and Becky Johnston found an immensely entertaining way to bring audiences into the privileged life of Maurizio Gucci (Adam...

Gaga rules in Ridley Scott’s at times ridiculous drama based on the true-life sagas of the Italian fashion dynasty
“The most Gucci of them all” is how Patrizia Reggiani described herself in a 2014 interview and, judging by this entertainingly ripe, comedically tinged tragedy, she has a point. Variously known as “Lady Gucci” and “Black Widow”, Reggiani became the centre of a very 1990s scandal involving lust, money, fashion, murder… and a clairvoyant. To that tabloid-friendly cocktail, Ridley Scott’s latest “true story” potboiler adds a dash of pop superstardom, with Lady Gaga (Oscar- nominated for her close-to-home performance in A Star Is Born) relishing the chance to find the human cracks beneath a larger-than-life, femme fatale surface.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on “House of Gucci,” an epic family story about the famous fashion brand, directed by Ridley Scott and featuring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver and Al Pacino, opening in theaters on November 24th, 2021.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Lady Gaga portrays Patrizia Reggiani, a lower class Fellini-esque woman who marries Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), part of the famous fashion empire called Gucci. The brand is still managed by the older generation, here represented by Rodolfo Gucci (Jeremy Irons) and his brother Aldo (Al Pacino). When the marriage of Patrizia and Maurizio starts to falter and split, the scorned Gucci wife enlists the aid of her psychic (Salma Hayek) to plot her revenge.

From his early film roles in “Fight Club” and “Requiem for a Dream” to his Oscar-winning turn in “Dallas Buyers Club” and even his twisted take on the Joker in “Suicide Squad,” Jared Leto is known for his transformative performances. But none of those previous parts could have prepared audiences for how Leto looks and sounds in Ridley Scott’s epic new drama “House of Gucci.” Leto spent hours in the makeup chair and altered his matinee idol looks to play the bald and overweight Paolo Gucci, a punching bag for the Gucci family whose own father frequently calls him an idiot.
“When I read it, I just fell in love with this character, the idea of playing this part,” Leto tells Gold Derby in a new interview. “I didn’t know what he looked like, what he sounded like. But there was something on the page that I just connected to.

House Of Gucci is based on a true story, one filled with wealth, power, ambition, family, tradition, high fashion, and murder, a story that plays like Italian opera, equal parts tragedy and farce. Ridley Scott directs, and the lush production stars Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and Jared Leto.
Filled with gorgeous period clothes and cars, lovely sets and locations, mostly in Milan, and fine photography, House Of Gucci delivers visual delights and jet-set style in this story that runs from the ’70s to the ’90s. Patrizia Reggiani — or at least the Mad Magazine caricature of her that Lady Gaga carves from the tabloids with Michelangelo-like artistry and precision — is one of modern cinema’s most voracious money monsters. And while the actress who so vividly embodies her in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” might insist that Reggiani married the reluctant heir to Milan’s greatest fashion empire for love and not the greed that she later grew into, everything we see on screen suggests that some Machiavellian bloodsuckers are just born that way (perhaps a pinch of self-delusion is necessary for Gaga’s bone-deep commitment to the bit).
The Patrizia at the heart of this frothy tragicomic fable is Jordan Belfort, Daniel Plainview, and No-Face from “Spirited Away” all dolled up like Elizabeth Taylor and rolled into a checkered $5,000 pantsuit that looks like the smell of leather. You can almost see the cash registers go “ka-ching!

“House of Gucci” has a transfixing backstabbing allure. It may be a drama about a crazy rich Euro chic Old World fashion dynasty, with a cast dominated by American actors scheming and emoting in gaudy Italian accents, but that doesn’t mean it’s some operatic piece of high camp. Based on the trailer, a lot of people apparently thought that’s just what it was going to be, yet trailers can be deceiving. There are moments in “House of Gucci” that will make your jaw drop, and moments you’ll laugh at the sheer audacity of what you’re seeing, but just because the characters in a drama behave in an over-the-top shameless manner doesn’t mean that the film that’s observing them is over-the-top.

Exclusive: As his House of Gucci cast premiered the awards season entry in Europe in concert with the 100th anniversary celebration of the fashion brand, Ridley Scott stayed back in Los Angeles. Glimpsed through the limited lens of a Zoom call, Scott obviously lives well. But he’s quick to say that where he’d rather be is the getaway home in France where he suddenly finds himself at the center of a fledgling winemaking business that manufactured its first batch of reds and roses from grapes grown on his estate in Provence. He shares the place with wife Giannina Facio, a driving force as producer on House of Gucci along with Scott, Kevin Walsh and Mark Huffam. And you might remember her as Maximus’ wife in those Gladiator flashbacks as Russell Crowe’s character was dying.

MGM has opened the doors to “House of Gucci” with a brand-new trailer for the Ridley Scott drama before its debut in theaters on November 24.
The highly anticipated film is one of the biggest awards contenders yet to widely screen — something certain to change in the coming weeks. Not that enthusiasm for the project is low: the Gold Derby odds have it in play for a number of top awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Lady Gaga, Best Actor for Adam Driver, and Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto. 2018’s “A Star is Born” was a breakthrough film for both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. It introduced Cooper as a feature film director and Gaga as a feature film actress. They earned a combined five Oscar nominations for the film, including lead acting honors for both. Just three years later, they could both return to their respective Best Actor and Best Actress races.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, Conor and I get blunt. Emily Blunt! As Jungle Cruise opens in theaters and on Disney+, our Blunt B-Sides include: The Adjustment Bureau, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Arthur Newman, and Wild Mountain Thyme. Additionally, we discuss the star’s first two films which broke her through and her eventual rise to leading lady status a few years later.
There’s heavy chatter on what exactly makes Blunt so dynamic, a detour into how Gulliver’s Travels prevented her from playing Black Widow for Marvel, and how two of these B-sides recall the Katharine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy films from Hollywood past.
Other topics include Matt Damon’s criticisms of Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Ultimatum script, the...

Pat Conroy, the South Carolina-based novelist whose works included best-sellers “The Prince of Tides” and “The Great Santini,” died Friday at his home in Beaufort, S.C., according to the Beaufort Gazette. He was 70 and had been battling pancreatic cancer. Conroy shared an Oscar nomination with Becky Johnston for the screenplay for director Barbra Streisand‘s 1991 screen adaptation of his 1986 best-seller “The Prince of Tides.” The film, starring Nick Nolte as a troubled man who falls for his suicidal sister’s psychiatrist (Streisand), received seven total Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture. Another day, another movie-to-tv project gaining momentum. On this occasion, it’s the Angelina Jolie-fronted actioner Salt that looks set to swap one medium for another, with Sony allegedly keen to expand the dormant IP in “a completely different way.”
That’s according to Screen Daily, reporting that the studio is shopping the pitch to buyers at the European Film Market. Indeed, it’s the first sign of movement from the Salt camp in some time, after the possibility of a sequel – one to be penned by Kurt Winner and, later, Becky Johnston – quickly faded into obscurity. Now, six years since the original’s theatrical release, Sony is hoping to find better fortune on the small screen.

Since 2010's Angelina Jolie-starring spy thriller "Salt" earned nearly $295 million worldwide, Sony predictably saw franchise potential as such. Kurt Winner, who penned the first film, wrote a draft for "Salt 2" which was apparently turned down by Jolie, and at the end of 2012, “The Prince of Tides” and “Seven Years in Tibet” scribe Becky Johnston was tapped to write another version. But it seems Sony has finally realized no one wants a "Salt" sequel, and are exploring an option that makes a bit more sense in terms of brand extension. The trailer for Arthur And Mike has been released.
Colin Firth stars in the romantic drama as a once-talented golfer who fakes his own death out of desperation to escape his current life.
After acquiring a new passport and a fake identity, he begins a new life in Indiana and encounters the similarly-troubled Charlotte (Emily Blunt), a woman travelling under her twin sister's identity.
The pair embark on an escapist road trip together, breaking into empty homes and role-playing new identities, but are ultimately forced to confront their own pasts.
The film is director Dante Ariola's debut feature, and is written by Becky Johnston. It was released in the Us last year under the title Arthur Newman.
Arthur And Mike is released in the UK on June 27.

Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) and Emily Blunt (“Looper”, “The Devil Wears Prada”) star as a couple that are both running away from their pasts in “Arthur Newman,” coming to DVD and Blu-ray Sept. 3. Colin Firth and Emily Blunt team up for the “gently comic screen romance” Arthur Newman, in theaters now. Recently, I sat down with both Colin Firth and Emily Blunt in a roundtable discussion about the film. Check it out below.
Wallace Avery (Colin Firth) is tired of his existence. Divorced, disconnected from his young son, dissatisfied with his love life, depressed and in the doldrums of middle age, he decides to make a radical change by walking away from his old life. He buys a new identity and hits the road as Arthur Newman to begin life anew, bound for Terre Haute, Indiana, where he dreams of reinventing himself as a golf pro at a tiny country club.
But his road trip is derailed by the entrance of Michaela “Mike” Fitzgerald (Emily Blunt), whom Arthur discovers passed out poolside at a seedy roadside motel. Mike sees through Arthur’s identity scam,...

Want to know what makes Emily Blunt cringe? "Normally, the character is summed up in the first line," the actress tells The Hollywood Reporter of the many scripts that float her way. "'She's a tough, sassy, English rose,' and you're like, 'Oh cringe. That's all you need to know.' I normally will close the script after I read that." But with Arthur Newman, Becky Johnston's identity-swapping dramedy, Blunt found herself thumbing through the script multiple times before grasping the background on her character, Mike (short for McKayla). In the film, Colin Firth plays a lost,

Lots of people want to escape their past. Wallace Avery wants to escape his present. Which he does, pretty much before the opening credits are over in "Arthur Newman."
That's to be his new name. Plainly, he's given it some thought in advance, as he meets the unsavory dealer in phony IDs (M. Emmet Walsh), purchases the sort of car he figures Arthur Newman would drive (a late-model Mercedes 380 Sl convertible) and fakes his death.
The pleasures of "Arthur Newman" come from figuring out the life he left, the dream he clings to for the future and the traveling companion he stumbles into on his way from Orlando to Terre Haute, Ind.
Colin Firth gives Wallace / Arthur a nice end-of-his-tether depression and desperation. He's been laid off from Fed Ex. He's divorced and estranged from his teenaged son (Lucas Hedges, quite good). He's dating a woman (Anne Heche) who is constantly disappointed in him.

What if we are all Arthur Newman? This is the question that director Dante Ariola and screenwriter Becky Johnston raise in "Arthur Newman," their tepid, imaginatively uninvolved drama about two strangers that fall in love while trying to escape their banal past lives. Ariola and Johnston’s film follows a rag-tag couple, played by Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, who bond when they discover that they both want to run away from their respective families and create new lives for themselves. But because "Arthur Newman" is a drab, psychologically flat portrait of misfit lovers in the process of self-fashioning new identities, we never really learn who its two main characters aspire to be or in what new direction they want to take their lives. All we know is that Arthur and his new girlfriend like to play hooky from their day-to-day existence, and that experience inexplicably changes everything. Firth stars as Newman,...

Hello, Newman: Ariola’s Meditation on Getting a Life Fails to Have One
For a film whose tagline aggressively demands, “If you don’t have a life, get someone else’s,” Dante Ariola’s directorial debut, Arthur Newman, is noteworthy only because it stands as a flaccid attempt at detailing one duo’s attempt at reinventing life, or something like it. A dull man decides to reinvent himself with a new identity, escaping his rather vague and contrived past, until he conveniently meets a loosely written kooky female character, and their experiences teach them about the value of embracing yourself and your responsibilities. Oddly starring two well known British actors as the woebegone American leads, it’s a tedious character study that forgets about characterization.

BitTorrent, the peer-to-peer file-sharing program that has always been a source of discontent and controversy in the film industry, will now be used for the first time as a distribution platform. Digital distribution company Cinedigm will partner with BitTorrent to support the release of director Dante Ariola's "Arthur Newman," which premiered last year at Toronto (trailer below). Penned by Oscar nominee Becky Johnston (1992's "The Prince of Tides"), the film stars Colin Firth as a man who fakes his own death and takes refuge with a woman (Emily Blunt) also outrunning her past. In select theaters on April 26th, Arthur Newman could be 2013′s little film that could, and it may just become an audience favorite. Starring Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, two of today’s best, the film centers around a golfer who wakes up unhappy with where is life is. Divorced, and with a golf career that isn’t going well, he decides to take on a new identity, and meets Mike (Blunt). The pair go on something of an “identity spree,” and fall for each other.
Written by Academy Award® nominee Becky Johnston (Seven Years in Tibet, Prince of Tides), this one looks like a winner, and (credit where due) has one of the better trailers I’ve seen in a while.
Also, you’ve got to love a movie that points us at Terre Haute.

Outside of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and the upcoming “Gambit,” Colin Firth has been missing from the big screen since picking up a Best Actor Oscar for his work in “The King’s Speech.” But he can soon be seen in the upcoming “Arthur Newman” alongside Emily Blunt. And the first trailer for the film has arrived, along with the new poster. Directed by Dante Ariola and written by Becky Johnston, the film follows two people who bond when they discover that they both want to run away from their respective families and create new lives for themselves. Despite the quality of the two leads, our review from Tiff last year called the movie “a bland scenario about boring people that want to mature but have no idea how.” And indeed, the trailer points to yet another generic and middle-of-the-road indie dramedy, complete with a sad, yet ultimately uplifting song...

It's been a year since Emily Blunt teased Arthur Newman to Vulture. "Two Limeys came in and stole some very American parts," she said. "We both play social misfits, and Colin is my new favorite person." Well then. Onto the trailer: Firth's character is having a crappy life, he's lost his stuff on the golf course, so he opts to take on a bunch of different identities alongside Emily Blunt. He may or may not be vocally channeling Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Is this a golf movie? Is it hilarious? Serious? Can't quite tell. But the trailer does its job in intriguing us. Set for April 26, Arthur Newman is Dante Ariola's directorial debut and the first script by Becky Johnston since 1997's Seven Years in Tibet.

In "Arthur Newman," the latest from writer Becky Johnston ("Seven Years In Tibet," "Prince of Tides"), Colin Firth doesn't just get rid of his accent; he discards his dwindling life and takes on a new, versatile one. A washed-up golfer hated by his ex-wife, girlfriend, and son, Wallace Avery (Firth) has no reason to go on, so he decides to fake his death and start fresh. He takes up the name Arthur Newman and meets a mysterious, kleptomaniac woman by the name of Mike Fitzgerald (Emily Blunt). The bizarre comedy turns all the more unexpected as the two break into random homes and take up the identities of the absent owners. Becky Johnston is in talks to write the screenplay for Columbia Pictures' Salt 2. The sequel script from Kurt Wimmer didn't appeal to star Angelina Jolie enough to have her commit, and after months, Johnston's in negotiations to add her work to the mix. In the first film, Jolie starred as CIA officer Evelyn Salt (Jolie) who swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash produce the film which at this time has no director on board. Phillip Noyce directed Salt.
