Confirming recent reports, Blumhouse has officially announced that Mike Flanagan will be taking on the next installment of The Exorcist, but don't expect it to be a follow up to Believer. Instead, a "radical new take" is promised in the upcoming film that will see Flanagan as the writer, director, and producer:
Mike Flanagan, the visionary writer/director behind the acclaimed films Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game and creator of the hit series Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House and most recently The Fall of the House of Usher will write, direct and produce a radical new take on The Exorcist in a new film for Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.
The film will tell an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. The film will be produced by Trevor Macy on behalf of Intrepid Pictures and Flanagan via his new Red Room Pictures banner.

About two months ago, and only twelve days after the sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here) reached theatres, it was announced that the sequel M3GAN 2.0 will be getting a January 17, 2025 theatrical release. Now ComicBook.com has caught up with director Gerard Johnstone to get a status update on the sequel – and during their talk, Johnstone said he’s excited to try to replicate the success of the first film.
Johnstone told ComicBook.com, “All I can say is that I’m here in L.A. and been thinking about it, working on it, and I’m just catching up with them this week to talk about it and do a debrief. It’s really important to do a debrief on the first movie, like a post-game analysis, and look at what worked and how we can do it again. I mean, Jesus Christ, it’s difficult to replicate the success.

In a recent interview, M3GAN (read our review Here) director Gerard Johnstone discussed the reshoots that were done to earn the film a PG-13 rating, saying he felt that the PG-13 scenes were actually more effectively troubling than the R-rated moments they replaced. But in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, screenwriter Akela Cooper (who previous wrote the slasher Malignant for producer James Wan) indicated that she preferred the bloodier, deadlier version of the story – and she’s hoping to see an unrated cut of M3GAN on home video.
When asked how gory her M3GAN script was, Cooper replied, “No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it. There should be an unrated version at some point. … I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier.

There are some horror fans who seem to be upset that the upcoming sci-fi thriller M3GAN – which reaches theatres on January 6th – has been given a PG-13 rating, feeling that the movie would be better if it sported an R. But while speaking with Total Film and Games Radar+, director Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) said he thinks the reshoots they did to make sure the movie would secure a PG-13 actually made scenes more disturbing.
Johnstone said, “Making it PG-13 was something that happened after the fact, but it was always so close to PG-13 anyway. It seemed kind of a mistake not to embrace it. I even remember thinking early on, ‘This could be PG-13, and some of my favorite films like Drag Me to Hell are PG-13.’ So we made the decision to go PG-13 and actually reshot a couple of things. What I was really stoked about is...

Word leaked out more than a month ago that Universal Pictures is so happy with the upcoming sci-fi thriller M3GAN and the positive response to the film’s trailer that they’re already talking sequel – even though M3GAN won’t reach theatres until January 6th. For his part, producer James Wan isn’t so quick to start pondering a follow-up… but he told The Hollywood Reporter that he has thought about the “bigger world” around the title character, so there are places for a sequel to go.
When asked if it’s true that Universal wants a M3GAN sequel already, Wan said, “Well, my answer to that is I am very superstitious, and I don’t like to talk about sequels before the first film is even out. But like any of the movies I make, I always think of a bigger world. I don’t just think of that...

Yesterday, Universal Pictures released a trailer for their upcoming sci-fi horror film M3GAN, in which the title character is a maniacal, lifelike doll with AI programming. One of the many viewers of that trailer was M3GAN’s fellow killer doll Chucky – who took a moment to throw some shade at her on Twitter. Sharing the M3GAN trailer, Chucky tweeted, “everybody’s tryna be me.”
everybody's tryna be me https://t.co/hFKPKY1AoF
— Chucky (@ChuckyIsReal) October 12, 2022
It should be noted that Universal also happens to be Chucky’s home studio, so this tweet shouldn’t be seen as Chucky’s creator Don Mancini or anyone else involved with the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise actually taking a shot at M3GAN. It’s just a fun bit of M3GAN promotion.

In the new trailer for “M3GAN,” an AI, childlike robot doll has a murderous taste for blood. The film comes from the esteemed horror production company Blumhouse, in close collaboration with horror maestro James Wan, who was notably behind the “Saw,” “Insidious” and “Conjuring” franchises.
“M3GAN” stars Allison Williams as Gemma, a toy company roboticist who programs the artificial intelligence doll. Gemma tasks the doll with protecting her grieving niece Cady, played by Violet McGraw, who lost both of her parents in a car crash. While Cady and M3GAN hit it off initially, the doll’s brutal side takes over when Cady gets bullied by an insensitive boy. M3GAN seeks to protect her from physical harm. The trailer is soundtracked by Taylor Swift’s “It’s Nice to Have a Friend.”

Four years have gone by since it was first announced that genre regulars James Wan and Blumhouse Productions were teaming up to produce the sci-fi horror film M3GAN, with Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) on board to direct. Thankfully, we don’t have much longer to wait to see the finished movie, as Universal is planning to give it a theatrical release on January 13, 2023… and with that date just a few months away, a trailer for M3GAN has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Based on a story crafted by Wan, M3GAN was directed by Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). The film has the following synopsis:
She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family.
From the most prolific minds in horror — James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, and Blumhouse, the producer of the Halloween films,...

M3GAN – In Theaters January 13
"She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family.
From the most prolific minds in horror—James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, and Blumhouse, the producer of the Halloween films, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man—comes a fresh new face in terror.

Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.
When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her...

The trailer for James Wan and Blumhouse’s M3GAN – which stands for Model Three Generative, Android – has Chucky vibes, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen that red-headed serial killer bust out dance moves like this doll does. M3GAN is another example of why we should stop creating life-life robots…or at least AI best friends charged with protecting kids.
