After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek shifts his focus over to the works of John Carpenter with the latest episode in his The Best Scene video series. The Carpenter classic Lance is looking at with this one is the 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here) – a movie that’s so good, he couldn’t pick just one “best scene”. He narrowed it down to three options, and you can hear all about them in the video embedded above.
In the video, Lance covers the opening gambling scene with our heroes Jack Burton and Wang, the alley battle scene that...

Legendary director John Carpenter is currently doing the press rounds to promote his new unscripted TV series, John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (you can read our review at This Link), and during an interview with ComicBook.com he was asked which of his films he thinks would make for the best film-to-video game adaptation. His answer: the 1986 martial arts fantasy adventure Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here)!
Here’s the direct quote from Carpenter: “I think, maybe Big Trouble in Little China, it seems to me would be a fun video game and kick ass. There’s also, by the way, a Thing card game. I mean, there’s a lot of these games. There’s actually a They Live game. I don’t know that there would ever be a Prince of Darkness game. I don’t see that.“

The list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election is now out, with the winner in each branch being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.
Also new this year in the streamlined timetable, as Deadline exclusively reported May 16. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.
The actors branch is the largest in the Academy and it also has drawn the biggest field of contenders for the one spot that is up. Incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board.

It’s a relatively quiet week for home entertainment releases, but Tuesday is playing host to one of my favorite films of the year, Ready or Not, which makes December 3rd feel like an early Christmas to this writer. Scream Factory is showing some love to John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China with multiple editions (including the standard Collector’s Edition as well as the absolutely gorgeous limited edition Steelbook), and Konga, one of my favorite cult films (thank you Terror in the Aisles!) is headed to Blu on Tuesday, courtesy of Kino Lorber.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 3rd include Boar, Christmas Presence, Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, Game of Thrones: The Complete Series, and 1 Must Fall.

While John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China is infinitely quotable thanks to Kurt Russell's performance as the imperfect protagonist Jack Burton, every great reluctant hero needs a great villain, and James Hong's portrayal of the evil Lo Pan gave us a character who is just as memorable as his truck-driving counterpart. With Big Trouble in Little China coming to Blu-ray like never before in a new Collector's Edition on December 3rd from Scream Factory, we've been provided with an exclusive bonus feature clip featuring Hong to share with Daily Dead readers!
Taken from "The Soul of Lo Pan" bonus feature on the Big Trouble in Little China Collector's Edition Blu-ray, our exclusive clip below features Hong reflecting on some of his most memorable moments playing Lo Pan, including how Carpenter and his crew used practical effects and ingenuity to pull off Lo Pan's glowing transformation and floating ability.

Coming off one of its most contentious years in history, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has sent out its list of candidates for its Board of Governors elections late this month.
The Board of Governors directs the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health, and assures the fulfillment of its mission.
Governors attend 6-8 board meetings annually (in person or by video conference when out of town). Each Governor also serves on one board oversight committee and their branch’s executive committee, and they are expected to represent their branch at numerous Academy events through the year.
Governors have fiduciary responsibilities imposed by state law to serve the Academy’s best interests, by acting with responsibility and care when approving annual goals presented by management, as well as major policies concerning governance.
CEO Dawn Hudson oversees a staff of more than 300 who conduct the Academy’s day-to-day business.

Stars: Federico Castelluccio, Aaron Hendry, Dion Basco, Stana Katic, Peter Kwong, James Hong | Written by Berkeley Anderson | Directed by Matt Codd
When Syfy films are thought up they must sound good on paper, it’s just a shame that many of them never get to the screen in good shape. Come up with an adequate story and a dream that CGI will add in all the entertainment value then hope for the best, the question has to be will CGI dragons been good enough for Dragon Dynasty?
Marco and his small group of explorers from Europe are the first to visit China and look for chances to trade, although the emperor is happy to have them there some are not, namely Shang Sel who works against the wishes of the emperor and releases dragons to kill the European visitors. As Marco and his group return home they are...

SAG yesterday released the official list of candidates for its upcoming national board elections. Notably, all of the open seats in La (the Hollywood Division) are held by MembershipFirst members, which means that, as was the case last year, Mf can at best maintain its level of representation on the national board. More likely, it will lose some of its board seats.
On the Hollywood divisional board, Mf could gain or lose, as all division seats are up every year. This contrasts with the national board, where approximately 1/3 of the 69 seats are up in any given year. The president and secretary-treasurer, who are ex officio members of the board, have two-year terms, and are not up for election this year.
Ballots in Hollywood and New York will be mailed on August 24 with a return deadline and tabulation on September 23. Election results are expected to be announced that evening.

John Shaffner has been re-elected as chairman and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Shaffner faced second vice chair Brian Seth Hurst from the interactive media peer group in a run-off election Wednesday after the two tied during a Dec. 16 vote by the board of governors.
In addition to Shaffner and Hurst, the original field for the top position at the TV academy included actor Peter Kwong.
During his first two-year mandate, Shaffner orchestrated the move of the Primetime and Creative Emmy Awards to the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles through a 10-year deal with Aeg.
During the past two years under Shaffner, the TV Academy's board of governors also introduced the new Primetime Emmy category of best reality host and split the variety/comedy special and series fields.

The next chairman/CEO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will be determined through a run-off election Jan. 6 after a vote by the board of governors Wednesday night ended with a tie between incumbent John Shaffner and second vice chair Brian Seth Hurst.
The third candidate, actor Peter Kwong, left the race after receiving the fewest votes.
The other ATAS officer positions were filled: Daytime drama producer Nancy Bradley Wiard was elected vice chair, PR veteran Stacey Luchs Struber was voted second vice chair, Marcelino Ford-Livene of interactive media was named secretary, production executive Kevin Hamburger will be the new treasurer, and producer Joetta Di Bella was elected L.A.-area vice chair after running unopposed.
The election follows a tumultuous summer for ATAS in which the academy came under fire by the creative community over the board of governors' decision to approve time-shifting of eight categories from the live Primetime Emmy ceremony.

Last month Fangoria told you about Studio 407's plans to bring their mini-series Hybrid into a collected form. With the recent announcement that Myriad Pictures plans to bring the series to the silver screen as a feature-length, live-action film, Comic Screams' Mike Fish takes a detailed look at the forthcoming trade paperback (hitting retail Feb. 25th).

If calm ocean waters at night were a bit tense and alarming for you, especially after watching that hot, naked blonde get eaten by Bruce in Jaws, then they’re about to get a little more intense after reading Hybrid.
Assuming from the title alone, writer Peter Kwong and artist Pablo Churin are not shying away from the fact that this graphic novel is an amalgamation of popular horror films.

Variety reports that the Studio 407 horror comic The Night Projectionist will be turned into a feature film. Myriad Pictures will produce.
Night Projectionist, which we previously reported on here and reviewed here, is set in a movie theater holding an all-night vampire film fest that is besieged by the real thing. It’s previewed in Studio 407’s Shadow Chronicles, out this month, with the series proper hitting stands in February. Myriad first partnered with Studio 407 about a year ago, and the initial project to result—Hybrid, which Peter Kwong is scripting from his comic about college students battling a mutant creature on the open sea—is set to roll later in 2009. The film outfit’s previous ventures into the genre include Mother Of Tears and Jeepers Creepers II.

Though it’s been relatively quiet from the Studio 407 team as of late, that doesn’t mean nothing’s been going on. The comic company continues to develop its titles into flms through their partnership with Myriad Pictures, the first of which being the creature feature Hybrid. Today they named Cube: Zero helmer Ernie Barbarash as the director of Hybrid; a very good sign that things are moving along.
Based on the comic written by Peter Kwong, who also penned the screenplay, Hybrid is the story of vacationing college students who come across what appears to be an abandoned trawler while on a sailing trip. But they soon discover it is fact the nest of a mutant creature, born from environmental abuse, who “fishes” for humans in the open water. Sounds like a good time to me!

"This was a real opportunity to take an old fashioned genre, the classic monster story, and bring it into the 21st century," says Hybrid writer Peter Kwong.
