As much as we’d all love the world where art is disconnected from politics, that just isn’t the case: they both inevitably influence each other. Brad Pitt learned this lesson in 1997 when his underrated period drama earned him and his colleagues an official ban from China. What movie and why upset the Chinese government so much?
Brad Pitt Got Banned from Visiting China
Brad Pitt and David Thewlis’ 1997 period drama Seven Years in Tibet follows an Australian climber who travels to the holy city of Lhasa, Tibet and becomes an instructor and a friend to the 14th Dalai Lama. While having a seemingly innocent premise, the movie went on to infuriate the Chinese government with its execution.
Historically, China and Tibet have a very troubled relationship, to say the least. In Seven Years in Tibet, the Dalai Lama is shown as a kind and compassionate man, and the...

Jeopardy! contestants have shared some interesting anecdotes over the past 60 years, including Austin Rogers meeting the Dalai Lama and Meike Olin dating five men in one day. However, Ferdinand Percentie’s personal tale on Monday’s (April 29) episode is going to take some beating. And fans are wondering if it was the best anecdote ever. As reported by The Mirror, during the show’s anecdote section, Percentie revealed to host Ken Jennings that his grandmother inspired the hit Jimmy Buffett song “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Percentie said his family comes from a small island in the Bahamas, Harbor Island, and “According to family lore, Jimmy Buffett came to the hotel/restaurant my grandma founded and [he] had a cheeseburger there. That was his inspiration to write Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Jennings was impressed, telling Percentie, “Your grandmother’s cheeseburgers were so good that he wrote a hit song about them. That is amazing.

I’m not sure if there’s a rulebook regarding how to watch a stand-up, but the first rule should always be: don’t go into it with any kind of presumption. When I read the description of the latest Neal Brennan comedy special on Netflix, titled Crazy Good, I didn’t expect it to be that hilarious. What I mean here is that I couldn’t imagine a stand-up that focuses on mental health, cryptocurrency, and the psychopathic tendencies of celebrities turning out to be “haha funny”—that too without being problematic. But Brennan has clearly managed to achieve that here. In Crazy Good, Brennan does get into everything that’s mentioned in the description provided by Netflix, and while he acknowledges the seriousness of so many of these matters, he also succeeds at getting some genuine laughter out of it. And it’s not an easy thing to do,...

Indian director-producer Karan Johar wrapped up the conference section of the first Cinevesture International Film Festival with a lively conversation that ranged from working with the right people and Bollywood’s shifting gender politics, to letting slip a few new projects from his Dharma Productions slate.
Johar, who’s having a busy year as a producer with Love Storiyaan on Prime Video and Showtime on Disney+ Hotstar, started the session by talking about how he surrounds himself with people “who know all facets of cinema, not just the mainstream” – even if they’ve been outspoken critics of his work in the past.
He used the example of indie maverick Anurag Kashyap, and producer Somen Mishra, now head of content at Dharma and its Ott division Dharmatic Entertainment, who used to slate him on the popular ‘Passion of Cinema’ blog.

Italian animation auteur Alessandro Rak – best known for European Film Award-winner “The Art of Happiness” and Neapolitan mob fable “Cinderella The Cat” – is at work on a new project titled “The Little Prince of Shangri-La” set in an imaginary Tibet and involving the search for the Dalai Lama.
Rak’s new work, which follows “Yaya and Lenny — The Walking Liberty,” that launched in 2021 from Locarno, was unveiled earlier this month at the Cartoon Movie co-production and pitch forum in Bordeaux, France.
As seen in this exclusive teaser provided to Variety, Rak’s new feature is set in an imaginary time that appears to blend present and past.
“The 13th Dalai Lama has just died,” reads the provided synopsis, and “The armies of the terrible Warlord are at the gates.” The fate of Tibet seems sealed. “But a vision emerges from the waters of the Great Lake of Prophecies. Does it...

“Do I look like a monk?” Chloë Sevigny asks the room.
We’re in the Lower East Side apartment of Chris Peters, the head designer of the fashion label Puppets and Puppets, and Sevigny is trying on the sequined gown she plans to wear at a fundraiser for Tibet House that night. But she worries the outfit’s long sleeve, which begins at the hem, drapes around Sevigny’s neck like a scarf, and extends to her left wrist, evokes the robes favored by the Buddhist figures whose traditions the organization highlights. As the sun beats through Peters’ window, cascading along the dress’s spangles and filling the room with reflected light, Sevigny is more reminiscent of a disco ball than the Dalai Lama.
Peters quickly reassures her. “I wouldn’t say it feels monastic. It’s an odd kind of ’30s glam. You look incredible.”

A robotic bust with a face modeled on a middle-aged woman who responds to questions using ChatGPT technology, Bina48 is a rather strange concoction. She sounds passably smart but definitely machine-like, looks nothing like a human being and yet the people behind her claim that she is the early prototype for how people could conquer death and live forever. In Sundance doc “Love Machina,” director Peter Sillen tries to find an answer for why Bina48 came to exist, yet ends up revealing the hubris of the people behind her.
The married couple at the center of the narrative, Martine and Bina Rothblatt, talk about meeting and falling in love in an attempt to get at the strength of their connection. Bina48 was developed with the idea that they would transfer their consciousness to the robot, through what they call an “AI mind file.” They started with Bina Rothblatt and based the bust on her likeness,...

André 3000’s debut solo album, New Blue Sun, is out now via Epic Records. Stream it on Apple Music or Spotify below.
The eight-song improvisational instrumental album is different from what fans might be expecting from the OutKast rapper: completely bar-free and no beats. Alongside the jazz musings of co-producer Carlos Niño, core sounds on the record include guitar, synth, and live sampling courtesy of Nate Mercereau, with Surya Botofasina on keyboards and synthesizers. André 3000 himself plays a variety of different wind instruments, including a digital wind instrument, a Maya flute, and others made of wood and bamboo.
“I’ve been interested in winds for a long time, so it was just a natural progression for me to go into flutes,” André said in a statement. “I just like messing with instruments and I gravitated mostly toward wind.”

André 3000 will release his debut solo album New Blue Sun this Friday, marking his first full-length LP since his group Outkast released its last record 17 years ago.
The November 17 release date was announced by André during an exclusive interview this morning with NPR. Though welcome news to fans, André cautioned that the new work might not be what longtime Outkast listeners might expect.
According to André, New Blue Sun will be “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living, breathing, aural organism.” Released on Sony Music’s Epic Records, the album packaging will include a label stating “Warning No Bars,” meaning no rapped lyrics.
During the interview with NPR’s Rodney Carmichael, André said, “I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! And you play it and like,...

Calls for André 3000 to release a solo record, or another recording with Outkast, have followed the musician for nearly two decades. It’s been 17 years since the last Outkast album, and the expectations around his musical output have only grown in that time — meanwhile, he has been roaming around various cities puttering around with his flute. That meandering has brought André 3000 to New Blue Sun, his debut solo album, set for release on Friday, Nov. 17.

André 3000 has announced the release of his long-awaited debut album, New Blue Sun, which will arrive on November 17th.
Right up front, however the OutKast rapper warns fans that the album is not a rap record. The cover artwork says as much, as it includes a label warning that the album contains “no bars.” Instead, according to NPR Music, New Blue Sun is an 87-minute collection of minimalist and experimental music featuring André 3000 playing a variety of flutes and other wind instruments. There are no bars, no beats, no vocals.
“I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! And you play it and like, ‘Oh man, no verses,’ André 3000 said in an interview with NPR. “So even actually on the packaging, you’ll see it says, ‘Warning: no bars.’ It’s letting you know what it is off the top.

This article contains spoilers for How To Become A Cult Leader episode 5.
How to Become a Cult Leader provides a terse, yet encouraging, look at some of the history’s most notorious cult leaders across history. Narrated by Peter Dinklage, the Netflix series offers “tips” on how to break into this growing field, offering six half-hour episodes of cautionary tales.
Episode 5 focuses on Shoko Asahara, leader of the meditation and yoga cult Aum Shinrikyo. On March 20, 1995, the group released plastic bags containing homemade sarin, a toxic nerve gas, on five subway lines of the Tokyo Metro during rush-hour. The gas killed 13 people and injured over 6,000. As the documentary points out, a second but failed attempt was made on the subways using Zyklon B, hydrogen cyanide. These weren’t the first casualties of the sect’s run.
Reverend Shoko Asahara was born Chizuo Matsumoto on March 2, 1955, in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture.

The fifth episode, unlike the last four, is more about how a cult leader can cultivate a positive image of themselves among their followers. The leader tries too hard to build such an image because that is the only way to remain in power and relevant. How to Become a Cult Leader now discusses Shoko Asahara, the man who led the deadly cult of Aum Shinrikyo. Why did we call it deadly? Read to the end of the article to understand how the man went from a cult leader to someone willing to do anything to keep his image alive.
The episode begins with the narrator and experts talking about how Shoko Asahara, before he chose to be a cult leader, was a television personality, the owner of a bento box franchise, and had the inherent quality of being good at publicizing himself. Every cult leader out there is great...

The release of The Little Mermaid—the latest in a long line of live-action remakes of Disney’s animated classics—brought with it a hell of a lot of discourse. Much of the noise surrounding this film, which received mostly solid reviews, was blatantly bad-faith, obsessed with the apparent fantastical notion of a Black woman in a leading role.
At a time when forced culture wars so thoroughly dominate every entertainment-related topic, navigating the racism swarming around The Little Mermaid has been tough. And the distressing realities of this bigotry reared its ugly head after it was reported that the film was struggling in key foreign markets, apparently in part because of racist backlash. More damning still for the film’s box office, The Hollywood Reporter cited headlines from government-affiliated publications in China that claimed The Little Mermaid suffered from “forced inclusion of minorities in classic films.”

Roger Deakins’ legendary cinematography career has seen him work with elite directors like the Coen Brothers, Sam Mendes, and Denis Villeneuve. In between those repeat collaborations, he even found time for a one-off project with Martin Scorsese.
“Kundun,” Scorsese’s 1997 film about the 14th Dalai Lama, earned Deakins the third of his 16 Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography (he went on to win the award for “Blade Runner 2049” and “1917”). Appearing on a recent panel discussion at the 92nd Street Y moderated by Annette Insdorf, Deakins opened up about the experience of working with Scorsese and why he thinks “Kundun” is the auteur’s masterpiece.
“I believe Marty usually does storyboards but on ‘Kundun,’ he just annotated the script with his ideas, what the camera is going to do,” Deakins said. “He would draw a wide shot or a tracking shot with little stick figures. He gave us a copy of that and said,...

Organisers believe the stadium’s popularity will soar with the new outfield and they are leaving no stone unturned to make the match an unforgettable affair.
A state-of-art air evacuation system will make a rollicking debut at the Dharamsala ground, with a combination of stunning cold season ryegrass and shade tolerant fine leaf Paspalum grass, Hpca media in-charge Mohit Sood told Ians.
He said the Hpca realised the need for a good drainage system as Dharamsala normally receives heavy rainfall annually in the region and a grass variety suitable to the both moist and cold climatic conditions is must.
By creating one of the most advanced cricket grounds, the organisers managed to improve world-class infrastructure in the stadium that is known for the stunning beauty amidst the Dhauladhar mountains in the backdrop.

“Are there any more real cowboys?” Neil Young sang Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl on a rare evening when he was neither the headliner nor, at age 77, even close to the oldest artist on the bill.
Providing an instant answer, Willie Nelson, wearing a cowboy hat and red-white-and-blue guitar strap, slowly strolled on to the stage on his 90th birthday, bringing the crowd of more than 17,000 to its feet.
Nelson sat in a chair — one of the few onstage concessions he’s made to age — and joined Young for the rest of their 1985 duet, “Are There Any More Real Cowboys?”

Peter Mettler returns to international doc film fest Visions du Réel with an unusual proposition for this 54th edition: an epic seven-part series, featured both in competition and in the Work-in-Progress section.
The Swiss-Canadian filmmaker picked up the Grand Prix at Visions du Réel in 2002 for “Gambling, Gods and LSD,” and was a special guest at the 2020 edition, which presented a retrospective of his work that has deeply influenced documentary-making in the 21st century.
“While the Green Grass Grows” is Mettler’s most personal project to date, a cinematic diary shot over the course of three years, from 2019 to 2021, running some 11 hours in total.
Parts 1 and 6, featuring his parents, were screened together in a world premiere on April 24 as part of the fest’s International Competition, with the aim of demonstrating the narrative and sensibility of the entire project.

George Harrison and Eric Idle were close friends, and Idle said he learned a lot from the former Beatle. Harrison’s devoted interest in spirituality caused him to think a lot about purpose, death, and the afterlife, which Idle said gave him a unique perspective on fame. It also added a bit of morbidity to the conversations he had with others. According to Idle, Harrison was constantly talking about how everyone was going to die.

The Dalai Lama recalls his escape from Tibet in this rare but rambling interview
The film-makers behind this Dalai Lama documentary must be cursing the timing of its release, just after that video sullied his godlike status as hero of world peace and symbol of Tibet’s resistance against China. Narrated with dignified gravitas by Hugh Bonneville, its selling point is an interview with the Dalai Lama, speaking on film for the first time about his escape from Tibet in 1959, aged 23. Though to be honest, describing the encounter as an interview is pushing it. These days, what you get with the rock star Nobel prize-winning spiritual leader is an “audience with the Dalai Lama”; the interviewer’s role is to sit in rapt silence.
So, with a cheeky grin, the 87-year-old relates the story of his escape from Tibet. Rambling a little, he describes disguising himself as a soldier to...

Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker played their first show together in nearly a decade at Coachella.
The Friday night performance at the Sahara Tent was announced just days prior to the festival’s kick-off. DeLonge, Hoppus, and Barker sounded in fine form as they ripped through an 18-song comprised primarily of greatest hits like “Anthem Part Two,” “The Rock Show,” “What’s My Age Again?” and “All the Small Things.” The setlist also included the live debut of their new song “Edging” as well as the first performance of “Aliens Exist” with DeLonge since 2001.
In between songs, DeLonge and Hoppus delivered their trademark banter, delivering crass commentary about the Dalai Lama and DeLonge’s mother’s vagina.
Blink-182 were originally set to kick off their reunion tour last month in South America, but were forced to postpone those dates after Travis Barker injured his finger. The...

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has apologized for telling a young boy to “suck my tongue,” an incident the the 87-year-old Buddhist leader claimed was done in jest.
The incident took place back in February, in Dharamsala, India. The Dalai Lama was speaking to a young boy, who asked His Holiness, “Can I hug you?” As the boy came up to him, the Dalai Lama pointed to his cheek and said, “first here,” asking for a kiss; the child gave him a kiss then embraced the Dalai Lama.

Behind some bins – big wheelie ones down an alley on Dublin’s Northside – a man and a woman, both oldish, are coupling frantically. Their al fresco pleasure is interrupted when they are spotted by the man’s daughter, who’s just come out of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
“It’s not what it looks like, Shiv,” explains her flustered father, as he makes himself decent while the woman, short and of Asian heritage, with cropped silver hair, yanks up her tights.
“It looks like an old Irish man f***in’ a woman behind some bins,” she says.
This delicious scene is from The Dry, a daffy eight-part tragicomedy previously on Britbox, now coming to Itvx. The old man is played, with all his baffled hangdog charm, by Ciarán Hinds, who is 70. The woman behind the bins with him – and here’s the complicated surprise – is played by none other than Hinds’s French-Vietnamese wife,...

Paris Hilton has addressed her controversial fib about having voted for former US President Donald Trump in the 2016 election.
During an interview with an Australian TV station days after Trump won the election, the American media personality said that she had voted for the Republican nominee, who she said she’s known “since she was a little girl”.
She later revealed to Marie Claire in 2017 that she didn’t actually vote for Trump, but predicted he’d make a good leader.
“He’s always been so nice, so respectful and sweet,” Hilton said at the time.
Now, in her newest book release, Paris: The Memoir, the socialite further addressed the lie, claiming the “truth is even worse”.
“When I was put on the spot in an interview, I pretended I voted for Donald Trump because he was an old family friend and owned the first modelling agency I signed with,...

When the nuns resist ordered re-education measures, the convent is closed by order of the Chinese police officer Deng. Deshar loses her last bit of freedom. The feeling of powerlessness in the face of permanent oppression leads down the path of ultimate non-violence.

"In order to practice love, you always need a practice of tolerance." Compassionate Films has revealed the UK trailer for a documentary film titled Never Forget Tibet - The Dalai Lama's Untold Story. This actually opened in the US a year ago (March 2022), but somehow we missed it entirely. Still worth a look. Inspired by the book "An Officer and His Holiness," it's narrated by British legend Hugh Bonneville and features music from Grammy-nominated artist Anoushka Shankar. Never Forget Tibet explores, with His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama, the details of his incredible escape into exile for the first time on film in his own words with the Indian political officer who led him to safety. The officially-sanctioned film will also feature an incredible 10-minute guided meditation with His Holiness' close friend and meditation legend Dr Deepak Chopra. The doc also explores the Dalai Lama’s compassion for a world seemingly...

To commemorate Time‘s 100th anniversary, the iconic publication’s Manhattan office will be getting a new addition: An art piece, an oversized mirror, with a graphic overlay based on its very first issue from March 3, 1923.
The piece of art, created by Mungo Thomson, is a gift to the office from Time‘s owners, Marc and Lynne Benioff. And it will be the third of Thomson’s mirrored Time pieces to find a home in the halls of Time‘s office overlooking Bryant Park.
Time announced its centennial editorial series Tuesday, including contributions from the Dalai Lama, Spike Lee, Laverne Cox, former editors Nancy Gibbs and Rick Stengel, and tentpole events set throughout the year.
While Thomson’s piece is for Time‘s centennial, it’s also a fitting metaphor as Time CEO Jessica Sibley pursues what she is calling “Time 3.0,” about creating the “next chapter in our future and...

The success of long-format cult-exposé documentaries like HBO’s “The Vow” and Netflix’s “Wild Wild Country” has given the cult-curious an appetite for the kind of chain-link explosion rhythms that only serials can supply. We’re primed, one might even say programmed, to expect the smallest new kink on even the oddest tangent to get ample screentime, and broader thematic arcs and major personalities to have multiple episodes over which to develop. Ben Braun and Chiaki Yanagimoto’s “Aum: The Cult At The End of The World” certainly acknowledges that there is a whole season’s worth of material in the story of the infamous cult, fully named Aum Shinrikyo, that murdered 14 people and injured 6,000 when they released sarin gas into the Tokyo subway in 1995. In trying to cram it all into one 106-minute package, however, the directors deliver a far-ranging but only fitfully revealing investigation into how Aum came into being and,...

Hollywood star Don Cheadle once stole a “finial from a lamp at the White House”. The 58-year-old actor admitted that while he’s “never” taken anything from the hotel, he did swipe a decorative topping as a souvenir and it’s on display in his own home, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
When asked about the best thing he ever took from a hotel, he told Empire magazine: “I have never! I would never! But I did steal a finial from a lamp at the White House.”
“I don’t think anyone’s coming to get me for it. After what’s been happening there in the past administration? I don’t think they’d have a leg to stand on. Where do I keep it? I put it on a lamp in my house.”
Don also revealed the most famous person in his phone book, and there’s another White House connection.

It's been 25 years since Martin Scorsese made "Kundun" and inspired an almighty political battle between Disney and the Communist government of China, and it's time one of his most underseen films got its due.
'Tis the season for Martin Scorsese Discourse. Well, in fairness, it feels like the endless, frequently bad-faith conversations surrounding one of our greatest living filmmakers has become a year-round event. Ever since Scorsese made his nuanced and perfectly reasonable comments about Marvel Studios and the creative curiosities of their cinematic output, poor Marty has been subjected to all manner of Film Twitter nonsense. It's baffling that one of the art form's most ardent champions, arguably the most cine-literate person in the industry, has been positioned as some kind of gatekeeping bully against the scrappy underdog that brought us the highest-grossing film franchise of all time. It's all very silly, of course, but also deeply ignorant of Scorsese's own work.

Two major superhero movie releases are likely to skip a huge market. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "Black Adam" are expected to be blocked from release in China. While no official announcement has been made by the Beijing regulators responsible for making such decisions (they're rarely officially announced), THR's sources within the Chinese film industry say that both movies "are believed to have little chance of winning approval at this stage." This will come as a particularly tough blow for Warner Bros. Pictures, given "Black Adam" star Dwayne Johnson's popularity in China.
That said, these bans were probably expected by both studios. In recent years, China has become more strict about how many foreign-made movies are permitted to screen in theaters. Marvel, in particular, has seen a dramatic decrease in permitted releases with a wide range of potential explanations. "Eternals" and "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings...

Fresh off its third consecutive week at the top of the North American box office comes word that Black Adam may not receive a lucrative China release.
Every year, the China Film Administration allows just 34 Foreign films to be shown theatrically, with each film forced to submit to the government appointed board before it can play in theaters over there. The finicky nature of what the board will allow can range from magic being featured in films to something as small as a Taiwan patch displayed on the arm of a jacket. Even removing the widely-discussed patch on Maverick’s jacket didn’t save Top Gun: Maverick from being banned. Of course, with 1.4 Billion worldwide, that ban probably didn’t hurt Maverick too much.
It is not uncommon for films to alter their content to appease the boards either, as Fantastic Beast: The Secrets of Dumbledore removed all references to...

Black Adam retained the top spot for a third week in a row with a reported 18.5 million (a bit of ahead of our predictions) representing just a 33 drop from last week, with a 137 million running total. That may sound impressive, yet when you dig deeper you realize that, with an estimated 200 million budget before any sort of marketing costs, Black Adam needs to hit close to 500 million before the studio can see any sort of profit. In reality, that number is probably closer to 600 million when you factor in all the back end deals.
Indeed, the movie will be relying on foreign gross to break even. Generally comic book films and especially films starring Dwayne Johnson (as he has a huge international presence) can count on big bucks from the China market. All seemed to be going great in that regard. It had been leaked (but never confirmed) that Black...

Exclusive: Physicist and author Alan Lightman has been pondering some major questions. For instance, “Where do we humans fit in the grand scheme of things? Are we just atoms and molecules, or something more? How does consciousness arise from the material neurons in our brains?”
The MIT professor and novelist goes looking for answers to those conundrums in the upcoming three-part documentary series Searching: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science. The series, directed by Geoffrey Haines-Stiles, premieres on public television stations on January 7, the same date it begins streaming on PBS.org for a 60-day window.
Could there be a better name for a physicist than Lightman?
Lightman’s areas of inquiry are as vast as the universe and as tiny as the smallest particle of matter.
“We travel with him to the prehistoric caves of Font-de-Gaume in France, where drawings and symbols suggest that—as long...
