The Major League Baseball Players Trust has announced it will provide $1 million in funding to support nonprofits dedicated to providing relief and recovery to the victims of the recent spate of natural disasters occurring across the Americas.
In keeping with its commitment and practice of assisting others when disasters strike, the Players Trust will distribute the funds in a manner that will support short-term relief as well as long-term recovery efforts in areas suffering in the wake of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes.
Major Leaguers are passionate about supporting the places where they work and live, and, for many Players, the disasters have devastated areas that so many of them call home. The nonprofits designated to receive portions of the $1 million in funding reflect Players’ places of residence, including Habitat For Humanity, Feeding America, Project Cure/Curando Mexico, Friends of Caritas Cubana and United Way Worldwide/Fondos Unidos de Puerto Rico.

Update:
I've added the update for this story at the end.
Original Column:
Today something significant will be happening. Today, people can prove me wrong about something I've been saying for years.
But I don't think they will.
See, today, Hands Of Stone will go wide. It'll jump from 810 theaters to around 2,000, with the hope of a big Labor Day Weekend payoff in a few days.
It centers on the legendary Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, has a stellar cast, and comes from a time in history that's so recent that the film's central figure is still alive today. For advocates of diversity, you have the talented Edgar Ramirez starring as Duran, you have pop music megastar Usher Raymond as the iconic pugilist "Sugar" Ray Leonard, and a supporting cast littered with hispanic performers like Rubén Blades, Ana de Armas, and Yancey Arias.
The production is rounded out by the "Raging Bull" himself Robert De Niro,...

As the Summer starts to fade, the multiplex looks again to sports films, those (like the “sport” of movie viewing) which are set indoors, away from the harsh cold winds. We’re not talking hockey or basketball, but rather the “mano y mano” battle that seems almost tailor-made for movies, boxing. Of course, there are many times when the boxing flick has been mixed with other genres. Just last year we had a boxing/ family tear-jerker with Southpaw and a boxing/ fantasy/ franchise-reboot Creed (it squeezed a few tears from audiences, too). This time out (perhaps to be an early Oscar contender), we’re seeing a pugilistic biography, a mix that goes back to the dawn of cinema. The 1940’s had Gentleman Jim, and the 50’s had Paul Newman as Rocky Marciano in Somebody Up There Likes Me. The greatest true-life boxing biopic may be 1980’s Raging Bull with an Oscar-winning turn by Robert DeNiro.

Chances are good that if you a horror fan and it’s new year’s eve, you’re searching for something to watch. Most of us hope to find the Twilight Zone marathon running strong late into the evening if we’re lucky, but it’s fickle. Hit or miss. Sometimes SyFy graces us with its presence… sometimes… they put on absolutely garbage and we take it. There are, of course, a few movies that have New Year’s Eve as the focus. Bloody New Year, Terror Train and New Year’s Evil which I can consider to be the pinnacle of New Year’s horror even if Terror Train is far superior movie. Is it any wonder that all three of these features of seen distinct DVD of Blu-ray releases? Fan/cult favorites with varying degree of quality and merit. Aren’t there just a pile of other movies...

In an unconventional casting choice, BBC reports that R&B singer/sometimes actor Usher Raymond (better known as Usher) has signed to play legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in the Roberto Durán biopic Hands of Stone. Durán, a Panama native whose nickname acts as the title of the movie, was ranked as the 5th Greatest Fighter of the Last 80 Years by publication The Ring and held four different world titles in four different weight divisions, before officially retiring in 2001 after a car crash.
Leonard’s inclusion in Hands of Stone pertains to a specific bout in 1980 between the two, known as Durán-Leonard II, where after eight rounds, Durán went to his corner and gave up, uttering the now famous words “no mas” (no more). The reason why he quit have always remained a mystery; Durán complained of stomach cramps but others have said that he was simply tired of being embarrassed by Leonard,...

[1] On July 4th 2010, I sat in a former Model T Ford factory in Detroit. The huge building was transformed into a futuristic make-shift boxing arena -- The Crash Palace (seen above), filled with hundreds of punk-styled boxing fans, covering the floors to the rafters. I sat in front of a huge monitor off to the side, observing what was being filmed in the boxing ring in front of me. As Shawn Levy filmed his movie that is set in the future, I realized that the future was happening right in front of me. I visit a lot of movie sets, and while each is very different, the production is usually very similar. This is one of the few times I knew I was watching something new as I sat on set. On the monitor, one robot was slugging it out with another mechanical fighter. What's remarkable about this situation is...

The tragic Sugarland stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair has claimed another victim. A 24-year-old cheerleading coach massively injured during the Sugarland stage collapse will be taken off life support Monday and allowed to die. Her family issued a statement saying Meagan Toothman‘s organs will be harvested for donation later today.
“Late last night it became apparent that our Meagan was no longer with us,” the statement said. “The decision was made to allow her to be at peace. This afternoon she is scheduled for a surgery that will provide gifts of sight, health, and life to dozens who are in need.”

Some girls just refuse to go down without a fight, and Estella Warren, Canadian actress and former Victoria’s Secret model, is now in even more trouble that she was before after literally trying to run away from a DUI arrest.
Warren was pulled over after crashing her car into three parked cars and then continuing to drive away. She resisted arrest, assaulted one of the officers, and then when she was waiting in the station to be booked, she wriggled out of her handcuffs and ran out the back door of the station. She was soon recaptured and brought back, and has now been charged with DUI, battery, and felony escape.

Last night the AFI Film Fest held a secret screening for what turned out to be the World Premiere of David O’ Russell’s The Fighter in Hollywood CA. I was lucky enough to be in attendance to watch the film that stars Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams. Wahlberg, who serves as the producer and star of the film, came up and introduced it to the audience, and legendary actor Robert Duval came in and sat down right behind us to watch the film as well. I never thought I would ever be in the same theater as Robert Duval watching a movie, so that was very cool.
