Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are back on the big screen together, as 1999’s The Mummy comes back to UK cinemas.
Given what a seismic year for cinema 1999 turned out to be – indeed, books have been written about it – it’s perhaps unsurprising that we’re getting a growing number of 25th anniversary celebrations.
Next up? That’d be The Mummy, the 1999 take on the Universal classic monster, that starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. It’s the best Indiana Jones film since Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade too, and while Stephen Sommer’s movie was followed by a couple of sequels, none came close to the fun of the 1999 film.
We now learn that the movie will be back in UK cinemas this coming July – on 5th July, as it happens – and it looks like it’s getting a relatively wide re-release too. Oftentimes, such re-releases are restricted to big cities,...

After spending years in development hell, during which time it passed through the hands of popular genre filmmakers like George A. Romero, Mick Garris, Clive Barker, and Joe Dante, a reboot of the 1932 Universal Monsters classic The Mummy made its way out into the world in 1999 with Deep Rising writer/director Stephen Sommers at the helm. Made on a budget of $80 million, the new take on The Mummy was a box office success, earning over $416 million worldwide. Mixing horror, adventure, and comedy, it was a film that could be enjoyed by adults while also serving as gateway horror for a new generation of genre fans. Many see The Mummy (1999) as a beloved classic these days – so it makes sense that Universal has decided to give the film a theatrical re-release for its 25th anniversary. It will be back on the big screen in theatres nationwide starting April 26th, and tickets...

"You have unleashed the creature that we have feared for more than 3000 years." Universal Pictures has revealed a new official trailer for the 25th Anniversary re-release of the beloved action horror movie The Mummy, considered by many to be one of the best 90's Hollywood blockbusters. It's returning to theaters later in April! Finally! I love this movie so much. At an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hamunaptra, an American in the French Foreign Legion accidentally awakens a mummy who begins to wreak havoc as he searches for the reincarnation of his long-lost love. "As we celebrate its 25th anniversary, we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring it back to the big screen. A fantastic opportunity for both devoted fans & newcomers to immerse themselves in the exhilarating adventure and timeless story." The Mummy stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, with Oded Fehr as Ardeth...

Some of the movies we talk about have opinions fueled by nostalgia if they are good or reputation if they are bad. Of course, everything is subjective when speaking about how you feel about a movie. It can be tied to events in your life that make you happy or sad. You can enjoy it on the strength of an actor, writer, or director you enjoy being involved or hate it for those exact reasons on a creator not being your favorite. Some things are irrefutable though such as box office or critical appraisal. Van Helsing (watch it Here) was the culmination of what Stephen Sommers had been working towards with tales of fantasy like The Adventures of Huck Finn...

A new episode of the Black Sheep video series has just been released, and in this one we’re taking a look at a movie you might expect to be really popular, since it’s a sci-fi action thriller that pits Denzel Washington against Russell Crowe. It’s not popular… but maybe it should be. The movie is Virtuosity (watch it Here), and you can hear all about its virtues by checking out the video embedded above.
Directed by Brett Leonard from a screenplay written by Eric Bernt, Virtuosity has the following synopsis: A former cop who has been imprisoned for murdering the psychopath who killed his family, Parker Barnes is recruited to test out a new virtual-reality program where the goal is to apprehend a computer-generated being called Sid 6.7, who has been modeled on hundreds of deranged criminals. When Sid manages to escape into the real world, Barnes must...

The year was 1999, and the world was presented with a cinematic masterpiece that would go down in history as one of the greatest Universal Monster movies of all time: The Mummy. Starring the illustrious Brendan Frasier and the effervescent Rachel Weisz, this film captured the hearts of moviegoers worldwide with its thrilling action, impeccable humor, and unforgettable characters.
Set in 1920s Egypt, the movie follows charming adventurer Rick O’Connell (Frasier) as he teams up with clumsy but endearing librarian Evelyn Carnahan (Weisz) and her bumbling brother Jonathan (John Hannah) to uncover the secrets of an ancient curse and defeat the resurrected mummy of the evil Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). From O’Connell almost getting hung by the gallows in the first act, to the epic showdown between O’Connell and Imhotep atop the Great Pyramid, The Mummy is a wild ride from start to finish.

Spend enough time charting the corners of any subgenre and you’ll quickly discover that not all entries are created equal. Due to the sexually charged nature of Erotic Thrillers, a common mistake that Hollywood suits make is believing that so long as there’s an adequate amount of sex and skin, the mechanics of the plot and the characters don’t matter.
What’s wild about Richard Rush’s 1994 film Color of Night is that it both does and does not fall into this trap. There is sex, yes, and it is ridiculous, but the carnal relations are condensed into a single part of the film, leaving long stretches of the thriller without its accompanying eroticism. And while there are a few murders, the thrills are also spread out and tend to be fleeting.
Which begs the question: without the sex and without the thrills, what becomes of an Erotic Thriller?...

This week’s horror and sci-fi home media releases are a fun bunch, as we have a lot of great new movies to look forward to, as well as a ton of killer classic titles headed home to various formats. If you missed it in theaters, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is being released alone and then alongside the first two Ghostbusters films as a three-movie collection, and for those of you who love mind-blowing animation, you’re going to definitely want to check out The Spine of Night. One of my favorite films from 2021 was Danishka Esterhazy’s Slumber Party Massacre, so if you missed seeing it then, now you can catch up with it courtesy of Scream Factory.
In terms of older titles, several of my favorite movies are headed to Blu-ray this week from the fine folks at Kino Lorber: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and both F/X...

Our film kicks off with, let us say, more than a wink and a nod to the seminal horror film The Exorcist. A film that, nearly 40 years on still can shock and terrify. Exorcism at 60,000 Feet might not shock and terrify in the same way. But it is not a subtle film, in many ways. Our exorcist here really looks the part, however rather than trying to get the beast out of the possessed man, he rather reluctantly shoots him in the head. Suddenly. I am invested.
There is a bit of black humour injected into proceedings. Wait. Lance Henrikson is in this? This is shaping up...

Above: Candy Mountain“How much of this film is composed, and how much is improvised?” The obvious question posed by Robert Frank’s first film (coauthored by painter Alfred Leslie), Pull My Daisy (1959), is also posed, sometimes less obviously, by the authored and coauthored Frank films that follow it—an unwieldy filmography that has on occasion become even harder to access because of the unwieldy ways it was financed or put together. To wonder whether they’re Frank or just frank is arguably another way of interrogating their relative degrees of sincerity or subterfuge, non-fiction or fiction, single or collective authorship. And it’s ultimately our call whether any shot in a Frank film corresponds to a declarative statement or a question—something that might also apply to his better known, more celebrated, and noncollaborative still photography. “After seeing these pictures,” wrote Jack Kerouac of The Americans, “you end up...

Talking about the horrors of war never grows old.
There have been many serious endeavors including Band of Brothers and The Pacific, China Beach starring Dana Delaney, and even Wgna's Manhattan.
For every dramatic undertaking, there have been several comedic looks including classics like McHale's Navy, Hogan's Heroes, and the long-running, award-winning M*A*S*H. That's where Catch-22 comes into the equation.
Based on the book by the same name written by Joseph Heller and published in 1961.
Set during World War II, focused on Yossarian aka Yo-Yo (Christopher Abbott), a bombardier who is always looking for a way out of combat.
He's apolitical and values his life, which lies counter to his participation in the war.
The title references an absurd catch for enlisted men hoping to escape combat situations that ensures the only way to get out of their predicament is to be declared insane.

Based on Joseph Heller’s seminal novel of the same name, Catch-22 is the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian (Christopher Abbott).
Yossarian is a Us Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him.
But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service.
Related: Shay Mitchell Lands Lead Role in Hulu Series Dollface
Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his military assignments, he’ll be in violation of Catch-22.
Catch-22 is a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule which specifies that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind.
A man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions,...

"In this city, you reap what you sow." 20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer for the new film by highly acclaimed director Steve McQueen titled Widows. Set in contemporary Chicago, amidst a time of turmoil, four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities, take fate into their own hands, and conspire to forge a future on their own terms. McQueen co-wrote the script for this with "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn, and put together an incredibly impressive ensemble cast here. Widows stars Elizabeth Debicki, Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Cynthia Erivo as the four primary women, along with Garret Dillahunt, Liam Neeson, Carrie Coon, Daniel Kaluuya, Jon Bernthal, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Brian Tyree Henry, Jacki Weaver, Kevin J. O'Connor, and Lukas Haas. This looks incredible already, way more major than McQueen's past work, way more thrilling. But we...

Christopher Reeve, Back To The Future, About Time, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: join us as we examine time travel in romcoms...
Love is complicated enough without time travel. When time becomes a factor in a relationship, that relationship may be in trouble. In science fiction especially, time travel is a wrinkle that both brings lovers together and keeps them separate in some temporally devastating way.
Marty McFly almost breaks up his parents before they even get together. Kyle Reese falls in love with Sarah Connor when tasked with saving her life. Captain America misses out on a dance with Peggy Carter by getting frozen for 70 years. And, on TV, River Song and the Doctor experience their marriage in almost opposite directions.

Those who appreciate the various macabre and/or fantastical works of author, artist, and auteur Clive Barker are having a happy Halloween, thanks to horror imprint Scream Factory releasing the "Director's Cut" of his 1990 film, Nightbreed. And it looks like they're going to have a terrifyingly terrific Christmas as well. Scream Factory announced today that on Dec. 16, it will release a collector's edition Blu-ray of Barker's third—and so far final—film as director, 1995's Lord of Illusions. The 2-disc set will include both the theatrical version of the film and a director's cut, a commentary from Barker, deleted scenes,...

Radiohead axeman Jonny Greenwood may have just finished recording the score, and the film is in post-production, but as per usual, Paul Thomas Anderson isn't rushing to get his latest out in the world. Warner Bros. has set a December 12, 2014 release date for "Inherent Vice," the Thomas Pynchon adaptation, that tells a 1970s Los Angeles-set story about inept, pot-smoking private detective Doc Sportello as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl, who also happens to be one of his ex-girlfriends (incidentally, we place it right at the top of our Most Anticipated Films Of 2014 list). The cast for this one is bonkers with Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Kevin J. O'Connor, Katherine Waterston, Timothy Simons, Peter McRobbie, Sasha Pieterse, Joanna Newsom, Maya Rudolph and Eric Roberts all with roles big and small. Of course, the next burning...

Warner Bros. has set release dates for two of their upcoming features, the first being Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, Inherent Vice. The adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel of the same name will hit theaters on December 12, no doubt with a full Oscar campaign behind it and what I would now expect to be a Toronto, Venice, New York or some combination thereof festival premiere. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as 1960s stoner P.I. Larry "Doc" Sportello, the film follows his character as he's by an ex-girlfriend to investigate the disappearance of her wealthy lover. Benicio del Toro, Kevin J. O'Connor, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Martin Short, Josh Brolin and Maya Rudolph co-star. Also, WB's feature film version of the popular HBO series, Entourage will hit theaters on June 12, 2015 as Adrian Grenier steps back into the shoes of movie star Vincent Chase, together with his boys, Eric (Kevin Connolly...

It's become quite obvious what draws me to the theater more than anything, the work of directors I've come to admire, appreciate and expect great things from. Certainly a film's subject matter adds to that excitement, but most often it's because the directors I most anticipate tell stories I most want to see brought to life. However, what today's list of my top ten most anticipated movies of 2014 illustrates is that even when the subject matter isn't necessarily something in my immediate wheelhouse, the thought of a new movie from one of my favorite directors makes such subject matter immediately more interesting. Or, as in the case with one particular film on this list, the subject matter, the development of the film itself and the talent involved makes it an obvious choice for my top ten, which we'll get to right now... If you've missed any of the previous installments...

Filming on Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice" has been underway for about two months now in Los Angeles and yet casting continues to trickle in. Due to the secretive nature of the production it seems like the only way anyone in the cast is actually confirmed is been when a picture of them on set hits the web. We know that so far the ensemble includes *deep breath* Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Kevin J. O'Connor, Katherine Waterston, Timothy Simons, Peter McRobbie, Sasha Pieterse and Sean Penn (possibly/maybe). As if the cast roster could not possibly get any cooler, it looks like singer Joanna Newsom will be in the film as well. Newsom is the singer/songwriter/harpist responsible for 3 excellent albums—you may also recognize her from her "Portlandia" cameo or because she's engaged to former '...

Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice is underway in Los Angeles and the first pictures from the set have arrived featuring Joaquin Phoenix and reveals Anderson's long-time partner, Maya Rudolph, has a part in the pic. The film is based on Thomas Pynchon's novel "Inherent Vice" and the story follows 1960s stoner P.I. Larry "Doc" Sportello (Phoenix) who is hired by an ex-girlfriend to investigate the disappearance of her wealthy lover. The rest of the cast includes Benicio del Toro, Kevin J. O'Connor, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Martin Short and Josh Brolin with Warner Bros. set to release the film next year. Have a look at the pics (via The Daily Mail) directly below.

With cameras now rolling in Los Angeles on Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, the Thomas Pynchon adaptation "Inherent Vice," it was only a matter of time before we started getting a look at some of the cast in character. Anderson managed to keep things pretty quiet during the shoot for "The Master" in San Francisco, but with an ensemble this huge -- Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Katherine Waterston and Kevin J. O'Connor and possibly maybe Sean Penn -- there was probably no way to keep away the local paparazzi. The Daily Mail have the first pictures of Joaquin Phoenix as "Doc" Sportello, the pothead private eye at the center of the story and he looks pretty close to what we'd imagined he would. What these pictures also reveal is that Anderson's longtime partner, a very pregnant Maya Rudolph,...

With cameras now rolling on Paul Thomas Anderson's next movie, the Thomas Pynchon adaptation "Inherent Vice," the cast continues to grow and one of the key lead characters has been found, but it's not any A-list name. Deadline reports that rising actress Katherine Waterston -- yes, daughter of Sam Waterston -- has booked the part of Shasta in the film. But she's not exactly inexperienced. So far, her resumé is peppered with work alongside acclaimed filmmakers like Tony Gilroy ("Michael Clayton") and Ang Lee ("Taking Woodstock"), and she's got a role in Kelly Reichardt's next picture, "Night Moves." But, she's never worked with a cast like this that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Kevin J. O'Connor with Sean Penn possibly maybe joining as well. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, the story follows inept, pot-smoking private detective Doc.

So, is "Inherent Vice" shaping up to feature Paul Thomas Anderson's biggest ensemble cast since "Magnolia?" It sure seems that way at the moment, people are falling out of trees to take roles in this thing. The latest to join the Thomas Pynchon adaptation is Josh Brolin and he'll feature alongside a cast that already includes Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Kevin J. O'Connor with Sean Penn possibly maybe lending his talents as well. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, the story follows inept, pot-smoking private detective Doc Sportello as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl, who also happens to be one of his ex-girlfriends. As you might guess, he runs into a variety of characters along the way. No word yet on Brolin's role, but cameras have already started rolling on PTA's flick. [Deadline]...

I've started reading Thomas Pynchon's "Inherent Vice" while here in Cannes and unfortunately have had only enough time to get about 35 pages into it so far, but hope to have it finished by the time I get home as sleep won't be a priority on the flight home as it was on the way here. As for the film adaptation directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, it already has Joaquin Phoenix aboard, playing stoner P.I. Larry "Doc" Sportello who is hired by an ex-girlfriend to investigate the disappearance of her wealthy lover. Already lined up to join Phoenix are Benicio del Toro, Kevin J. O'Connor, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone and Martin Short and now Sean Penn is reportedly circling the role of loan shark Adrian Prussia in the film according to Cigarettes and Red Vines. Since "Magnolia," Paul Thomas Anderson has mostly eschewed the starry ensemble. Not that A-listers haven't been in his films, but each of his last three films -- "Punch Drunk Love," "There Will Be Blood" and "The Master" -- have been anchored by one or two titanic performances by big names, but have featured supporting casts including a few names from PTA' s rep company, and other mostly unfamiliar faces. But it looks like that's changing with "Inherent Vice," his currently-prepping adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel. The film (backed by Warner Bros, making it his first true-blue studio picture) sees him reunite with Joaquin Phoenix for the lead role, with a ridiculously stacked supporting roster on board so far, with Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Kevin J. O'Connor all signed on. And now, word's arrived that perhaps the biggest name so far has come on board,...

Hal Hartley is one of the true originals of modern cinema. A consummate stylist, his work is erudite and eccentric, defiant in its singularity. After making first film The Unbelievable Truth (1989) for just $75,000, Hartley went on to quietly change the face of independent American cinema with his deadpan dialogue, brimming with arch and often philosophical insights on relationships. Over his first few films, Hartley also developed a sophisticated aesthetic to compliment his sharp writing. Over the next few months, Artificial Eye will release The Unbelievable Truth, Simple Men (1992) and Amateur (1994) for the first time on Blu-ray. CineVue's Craig Williams asked Hartley about youth, the Weinsteins and Alan Rudolph.
