Channing Dungey is stepping down from her role as vice president of original content at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
Her last day at Netflix is today. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, she is leaving to pursue another opportunity. There has been speculation that Dungey could be in line to take over for Susan Rovner, who recently stepped down as co-head of Warner Bros. Television to lead original content at NBCUniversal.
“I’ve known Channing for many years, and it’s been a pleasure working closer with her,” said Bela Bajaria, vice president of global TV for Netflix, in a statement. “She’s a terrific executive who’s always carved her own path, and although we will miss her, we wish her all the best for the future.”

Exclusive: Channing Dungey has stepped down as VP Original Content and head of drama at Netflix after 20 months at the company to pursue another opportunity. Her last day is today.
While that opportunity has not been revealed, Dungey, the former ABC Entertainment president, is among the handful of top female TV executives rumored to succeed Susan Rovner as president of Warner BrosTV.
Dungey’s departure follows the exit last month of Netflix’s head of content Cindy Holland when Bela Bajaria was upped to Global Head of TV. Dungey, who used to report to Holland, moved to reporting to Bajaria.
The ripple effect from the major shakeup is still felt within the company, with other Netflix executive departures considered likely, I hear.

It was the Primetime Emmy Awards, and it was a night of surprises—like Fleabag‘s win for Best Comedy Series, and the total shutout for perennial favorite Veep—and expected wins, like Game of Thrones taking Best Drama Series, and love for Saturday Night Live resulting in two trophies. John Oliver also doubled up, winning Variety Talk Series as well as Writing. In the Limited Series race, Chernobyl prevailed, taking three trophies including the top prize.
Perhaps the most drama, of course, came from the ever-evolving battle between the vanguard of prestige cable, HBO, and the upstart streamer fast becoming the new establishment, Netflix. Coming into tonight, the two were nearly neck-a-neck with Creative Arts wins, but HBO, which had a narrow advantage, cemented its lead with 34 wins to Netflix’s 27. VH1 has renewed “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” for a fourth season. Top contestants from past “RuPaul’s Drag Race” seasons compete to earn a crown and a place in the “Drag Race Hall of Fame.” Both programs are hosted by RuPaul Charles.
Similar in format to the mothership “Drag Race” series, “All Stars” features past “Drag Race” performers as they compete in a variety of comedy, dance or acting challenges like “Lip Sync for Your Legacy,” with previous prizes including a one-year supply of cosmetics and $100,000. In the end, last night’s Season 10 finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race saw butterfly wardrobe malfunctions, some Janet Jackson lip-syncing, and a superstar victory for Aquaria.
Amidst all that, the Emmy winning VH1 reality series also saw its best numbers ever among the key demo of adults 18-49 and total viewership for a season – which is not bad at all at this point in any show’s run, drag race or not.
While the S10 finale was down a mere 2% in viewership from last year – essentially steady – the overall demo ratings for the season were up 10% from Season 9, averaging a 0.55 18-49 rating. Season 10 also averaged 469,000 viewers in the 18-49 demo, which is up 6%, and overall viewership of 723,000 was up 2%, making it the most-watched season in Drag Race history.

“Rupaul’s Drag Race” may be on a new network, VH1, but it has the same fierce attitude that carried it along for nine frock-filled seasons on Logo. And the channel, which is part of the MTV family, is so happy with the record ratings for the just-concluded tenth edition that it has confirmed the renewals of the reality competition for season 11. VH1 promises more fierce queens and killer lip syncs.

The Emmy-winning reality competition series “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has been a staple of gay culture since its premiere in 2009, but it’s now a part of established pop culture as well. Going mainstream, however, doesn’t mean the show has lost its voice.
Instead, it’s shouting louder than ever, and hitting new ratings highs in Season 9. And that’s ultimately due to Viacom’s decision to shift this battle royale of drag queens between networks, moving “Drag Race” from its original home on Logo to the much larger VH1.
Read More: ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race:’ 5 Reasons Why It’s The Smartest Reality Show On TV
The move comes as Viacom makes several dramatic shifts in its cable portfolio (including transitioning Spike TV into the Paramount Network), and strategically moves shows around is properties. But the “Drag Race” move was also inspired by host RuPaul Charles’ Emmy win last year for Best Host.
