The notion of David Arquette starring in a horror movie about a “possessed” rock band promises so much trashy fun, a certain amount of disappointment seems almost inevitable. Yet “High Voltage” confounds expectations by being very little fun at all. Short on thrills and energy despite its title, this slick yet sluggish feature often seems barely interested in the horror elements that are, after all, what will primarily lure viewers in.
Instead, the genre hook comes off as more of a Trojan Horse with which to smuggle in a showcase for “Hollow Body”, the onscreen vehicle for writer-director Alex Keledjian’s songwriting and costar Allie Gonino’s singing. It’s an awkward, compromising combination that ultimately provides little satisfaction on any level — unless you’re content to watch Gonino model a series of increasingly over-the-top, midriff-baring “sexy rock chick” fashions.

Friday marks one week since Elizabeth Thomas was reunited with her family after her alleged abduction at the hands of former teacher Tad Cummins.

Elizabeth and Cummins were allegedly in Northern California for a week and a half, authorities believe, spending a few days and nights in Berkley and Black Bear Ranch Commune before ending up in a cabin in rural Cecilville, more than 2,000 miles from Tennessee.

If The Offering is truly Singapore’s first Hollywood horror film, officials might want to call a mulligan on that footnote.
Filmmaker Kelvin Tong is no stranger to scares (having directed 2005’s The Maid), but his latest thriller struggles to find individuality amidst a hodgepodge of Us influences. Entire scenes can be classified as homages to popular American haunters, where “homage” is a nice term for “egregious ripoff.” The Conjuring, The Exorcist, and a billion movies in between help shape Tong’s vision, which is nothing but a reference-fueled grab-bag of unconnected dots. If you’ve seen Any horror movie – like, ever – then you’ve probably already seen some portion of The Offering.
It all begins when Jamie (Elizabeth Rice), a young journalist, is pulled to Singapore by the death of her sister Anna (Rayann Condy). The local coroner blames suicide, but Jamie refuses to believe her sister would commit such a sin.

Last night's episode of "Mad Men" (Season 7, Episode 4: "The Monolith") was the kind of slow burn episode that placed a heavy emphasis on mood and character but was fairly low on things actually, you know, happening (that final shot of Don on the typewriter, as Peggy storms into his office, was priceless though). The most fascinating plot thread of the night probably involved Roger (John Slattery) and his ex-wife Mona (Talia Balsam) going to retrieve his daughter Margaret (Elizabeth Rice) from a hippie commune upstate (she has renamed herself Marigold, obviously). This rustic setting was placed in stark opposition to what was going on in the office, where a huge computer was being installed.
And while much of the online speculation involved with "Mad Men" this season has centered on Megan and her potential involvement with the Manson Family, some nifty theorizing popped up in response to the hippie commune Margaret stays at.

Mad Men opened on Sunday night with Sterling Cooper & Partners happy to show off their new Ibm 360, the computer that Harry Crane was so eager to get into the office. It’ll impress their clients and perhaps get them some more business.
Mad Men Recap
In order to fit the sizeable machine at Sc&P, the creative lounge is out and the computer is in. Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) is less than thrilled about the arrangement, but Lou (Allen Havey) tries to reassure her that the computer is going to be of far more use to her than the lounge. Despite their prickly relationship of late, Lou recommends Peggy for creative on Pete’s (Vincent Kartheiser) Burger Chef account. Cutler (Harry Hamlin) had wanted Ted (Kevin Rahm) on it, but Ted wasn’t interested. Pete, however, insists on having Don (Jon Hamm) do the work.

Mad Men’s season premiere on Sunday night, titled “Time Zones,” picked up less than a year after the events in last season’s finale in which Don Draper (Jon Hamm) was put on a sabbatical after a cringe-worthy pitch to Hershey executives.

The episode opens with Freddy Rumsen (Joel Murray) testing out a pitch for Accutron for Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) In her Sterling Cooper & Partner’s office. She’s impressed with the direction he’s going in, and cleans it up with the simple catchphrase – “Accutron, it’s time for a conversation.” After her meeting with Rumsen, who’s freelancing for the ad firm, Peggy heads to a status meeting with Lou Avery, who’s serving as Don’s replacement for the time being.

We can't go so far as to call "The Better Half" an optimistic episode of "Mad Men," but there's an unusual sense of hopefulness to the little breakthroughs (and one big breakup) that occur throughout.
Don, Roger and even Pete have conversations that force them to confront uncomfortable realities about their relationships, while Peggy weathers a more direct hit to her personal life. As the show enters the home stretch -- only four more episodes left this season! -- the question becomes whether or not any of these events can get the characters moving in the right direction to improve their lives.
[Note: In the spirit of showrunner Matthew Weiner declaring that this season is about Dr. Arnold Rosen telling Don, "People will do anything to alleviate their anxiety," we're tracking the happiness of key characters week by week.]
The "Mad Men" happiness index, week eight:
1) Bob Benson (unranked last week): He still seems far too good to be true, but Bob is happily romancing Joan and referring a nurse to help with Pete's mother's dementia, so this background player assumes Roger's usual spot at the top for a week.

Is Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner secretly a nostalgic Millennial? It sure seems that way, considering the actors who have popped up on Mad Men lately. Sure, big-ish names like Julia Ormond have made appearances on the show — but their numbers are dwarfed by the veterans from Gen Y touchstones like The Secret World of Alex Mack, Clarissa Explains It All, 10 Things I Hate About You, Gilmore Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and even Saved by the Bell who have been invading AMC’s flagship series for years. This might indicate that Weiner and his casting directors love the late...

Playing tonight at the SoHo International Film Festival is the slow-burn thriller Forgetting the Girl, an impressive feature debut for director Nate Taylor and writer Peter Moore Smith.
Christopher Denham (Shutter Island) stars as New York City photographer, Kevin Wolfe, who specializes in headshots. He's haunted by a tragedy from his past and this certainly doesn't help his mental state any when he's rejected by the women he has asked out. Lindsay Beamish, Elizabeth Rice and Anna Camp also star in the film which has been making the festival rounds for the last few months.
"Peter and I both worked in advertising and he saw some of the stuff I was doing and said that I could do a lot with a little," Taylor tells Shock Till You Drop of the film's genesis. "He had a cool script we could make for no money. I saw the script and loved it.

Chicago – Lionsgate and After Dark Films’ recently released their third collection of “8 Films to Die For” and this year proved to be the most uninspiring octet to date. With fewer risks taken than the last two years and less extreme failures or successes, “After Dark Horrorfest III” is terrifyingly dull.
Overall DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 What makes this year’s collection rather forgettable is the lack of extremes on either side of the rating spectrum. The first two years produced some truly excellent genre gems including “Borderland,” “The Hamiltons,” and “The Abandoned.” At the same time, movies like “Dead Lake,” “Undead,” and “Nightmare Man” should be buried in a deep hole and never see the light of day again.

From Within is not a perfect film by any means but it's easily the best movie from the After Dark Horrorfest III line-up. On the surface, it's about a suicide curse that infects an intensely religious small town in Southern America but there is a strong subtext about how fear and religious fervor can make people do unimaginable evil. Actually, it's very similar to the basic theme running through The Mist and as I watched it I thought to myself that this would be the kind of story that Stephen King would like.

Although it deals with the hot-button topics of religion and suicide, there’s never a sense that From Within is aiming for gratuitous provocation, or wearing its issues on its sleeves. It’s a straightforward, back-to-basics horror drama that looks great—not surprising given that it was directed by the gifted cinematographer Phedon Papamichael. Yet he doesn’t let the imagery overwhelm the movie either, employing an eye-catching naturalistic palette that gracefully segues into menacing mood. Papamichael stated at the film’s Tribeca Film Festival premiere that horror isn’t necessarily his thing, but he proves here that he sure can direct the heck out of a scare setpiece.

A small community in Grovetown has been hit with a series of suicides. While some believe that there is nothing to be feared about, others figure out the hard way that the fear does not lay only in their imagination. Instead, it is the real deal and it comes within themselves. Those are the base of "From Within" plot outed through the film's new trailer.
The less than two minutes video footage first displays that there is an oddity in the rising number of suicide death in a small town of Grovetown. Then, it is suggested that the rash of suicides may be caused by the town's secret which is a curse. The trailer continues to expose how some people in the town are haunted by their own selves.

Today we were provided with the first official still and the playdates for From Within, which will be playing the Tribeca Film Festival in Nyc this month. The small, serene community of Grovetown is shaken by the dual suicide of a young couple. When more suicides quickly follow, people in the evangelical town turn a blind eye and cling firmly to their deep-seated beliefs. Lindsay (Elizabeth Rice), a local student and girlfriend of the pastor's son, is not so dismissive. She begins to prod deeper into the mystery and befriends Aidan (Thomas Dekker), a non-believer whose family has stirred controversy before. Lindsay soon discovers that something evil and indescribable is at work, moving parasitically from victim to victim.
