King Kong ain’t got nothin’ on Denzel Washington but he did have something on Ethan Hawke on Oscar night 2002, when Hawke lost Best Supporting Actor for his remarkable performance in Training Day. But without his co-star, Hawke might have been plenty more devastated than he was allowed to be.
Appearing on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? (via Variety), Ethan Hawke remembered that Denzel Washington had some sage wisdom after he lost to Iris’ Jim Broadbent. According to Hawke, Washington told him, “‘It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better…You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status.’ That’s the way he thinks…The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple. It didn’t elevate who he was.” Washington would go on to win Best Actor later that night, which we’d...

It’s a zoo out there. In 1990, the New York Yankees were a disaster; these were not the Derek Jeter years.
With a 67-95 record, 1990 was the first time in 24 years the Bronx Bombers finished in last place in the division, a whopping 21 games behind the rival the Boston Red Sox. It was the team’s worst record since 1912, two years before Babe Ruth even entered Major League Baseball (and eight years before he joined the Yankees). How bad were the 1990 Yankees? They threw a no-hitter and lost.
A new docuseries coming soon to Peacock, “Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos, and Baseball,” gives the abysmal season a “The Last Dance” spin, covering both the drama on the field and off. Like what? Well, there was the time when Yankee owner George Steinbrenner paid a notorious gambler to dig up dirt on superstar player Dave Winfield. That gambler is interviewed in...

Ethan Hawke reveals what Denzel Washington said to him the night Hawke lost his ‘Training Day’ Oscar
The year was 2002 and Ethan Hawke was up for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his work in “Training Day.” When Marcia Gay Harden read Jim Broadbent’s name, winning for “Iris,” Hawke’s co-star Denzel Washington whispered something in his ear.
It wasn’t “boom!” As Hawke revealed in a recent interview, Washington – who had already won an Oscar for “Glory” and would win a second that very night – said, “It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better.”
Hawke, who would go on to get three more Oscar nominations for acting (“Boyhood”) as well as screenwriting, expanded what Washington meant. “You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” he said. “That’s the way he thinks. That’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple.

Ethan Hawke was nominated at the 2002 Oscars for best supporting actor for his performance in Antoine Fuqua’s crime thriller “Training Day.” He lost the prize to Jim Broadbent (“Iris”), but he immediately got some much-needed perspective from his “Training Day” co-star Denzel Washington, who happened to win the Oscar that same night for best actor.
During a recent interview on Max’s “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” series, the host asked Hawke about a story he heard in which Washington leaned over to Hawke after the latter’s Oscar loss and whispered in his ear: “It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better.”
“You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status. That’s the way he thinks,” Hawke said about Washington’s advice in the moment on Oscars night. “That’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth.

Ethan Hawke is revealing the advice his Training Day co-star Denzel Washington told him after he lost at the 2002 Academy Awards.
The two legendary actors were both nominated that year for their roles in the 2001 film, including best actor and best supporting actor, respectively. While Washington won in his category, Jim Broadbent beat out Hawke for his performance in Iris.
During the actor’s recent appearance on Max’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, he revealed why Washington whispered in his ear during the ceremony that it’s actually better to lose the Oscar.
“You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” Hawke recalled, quoting his former co-star. “That’s the way he thinks, and that’s what I’m talking about playing with [baseball great] Babe Ruth.”

In 2002, Training Day costars Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke were Oscar-nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Washington won, Hawke did not, losing to Jim Broadbent for his role in Iris.
Hawke said Washington provided some sage advice after he lost.
“You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” Hawke quoted Washington during his appearance on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace on Max. “That’s the way he thinks, and that’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth.”
The latter reference comes from Hawke previously comparing acting with Washington to what it would be like to play baseball with all-time baseball great Ruth. “I think when all is said and done, he’s the greatest actor of our generation,” Hawke said. “The Academy Award has more power because Denzel has a couple. It didn’t elevate who he was.

Rush singer-bassist Geddy Lee has been an avid collector of baseball memorabilia for decades, and now he’s auctioning off hundred of items from his collection.
Lee’s love for the game of baseball led him to pursue artifacts from America’s favorite pastime while touring the States with Rush in the late 1970s. He’s been collecting ever since, obtaining some truly remarkable pieces along the way — some of which will be put on the block on December 6th during a live auction hosted by Christie’s and Hunt Auctions.
Highlights include a baseball signed by The Beatles during their Shea Stadium appearance in 1965; balls signed by US presidents John F. Kennedy, Harry Truman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson; and a bat used by Mickey Mantle in the 1960 World Series. Overall, Geddy’s collection includes “hundreds of autographed and historic milestone baseballs, spanning over three centuries of Major League Baseball and American history.

Christopher McQuarrie is "delighted" about the success of 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer'.The 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One' director has seen his Tom Cruise-led action blockbuster eclipsed at the box office by the two movies but feels that the 'Barbenheimer' phenomenon has done wonders for the film industry.Speaking on the Empire Spoiler Specials podcast, Christopher said: "I couldn't be more delighted. We meant what we said when we went out and bought those tickets."I meant what I said when I went on Twitter – my last ever post on Twitter – and said, 'Go pink or go home.'"Could not be more thrilled for Margot (Robbie), who I think is an extraordinary talent, a mega-star. And I'm delighted for the validation that the movie gives to that part of Margot that is that mega-star. And I hope the lessons learned from that are applied.

Clarence Avant, the judicious manager, entrepreneur, facilitator and adviser who helped launch or guide the careers of Quincy Jones, Bill Withers and many others and came to be known as the “Black Godfather” of music and beyond, has died. He was 92.
Avant, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles, according to a family statement released Monday.
Avant’s achievements were both public and behind the scenes, as a name in the credits, or a name behind the names. If you didn’t grow up in Pittsburgh (which boasted rival baseball greats the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords) or watch Episode 5 of the 1994 Ken Burns docu-series “Baseball,” you may not know much about the Negro Leagues. That’s about to change.
Sam Pollard’s “The League” is an eye-opening slice of American baseball’s 154-year history. James Mangold was heavily influenced by Steven Spielberg during the making of 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny'.The 59-year-old director has replaced Spielberg behind the camera in the final installment of the franchise and was always referring back to his iconic predecessor's work.Speaking to Variety, James said: "I wasn't looking to make the movie my own. I would say I was looking to have a voice."You don't want me doing a knockoff Steven, but I want to be playing from the same hymnal, using the same tools. I mean, I'm pitch-hitting for Babe Ruth. I at least have to use my own swing some of the time."But the reality is, every day I'm thinking of what he would do, how he would do it. In any way I could, I wanted to do the movie in his style. It didn't feel threatening to me at all.

It doesn’t get any more delightful than the surprising, warm documentary about beloved baseball legend Yogi Berra, It Ain’T Over. Surprising? Yes, as this well-made bio documentary looks back at Yogi’s outstanding baseball career as player, something overshadowed and even forgotten by fans, as he became best known as a lovable pop culture icon and for his “Yogi-isms,” quotable phrases like “it’s deja vu all over again,” “when you come to a fork in the road, take it” and “it ain’t over until it’s over.” Yet Yogi Berra was a baseball player whose record put him among the greats of the game, As actor and baseball fan Billy Crystal put it, Yogi was “the most overlooked superstar in the history of baseball.”
The numbers are impressive, jaw-dropping even, considering what we might think we know about Yogi Berra.

Despite it’s very au courant subject matter, Peter Bogdanovich’s first feature was never going to abide by the filmmaking trends of its era. In fact, it would be hard to think of many others in the industry less interested in the then-contemporary vanguard, and more fixated on the way things used to be back in American cinema’s golden age. Nevertheless, Targets emerged in 1968 as something of a bridge between the two generational factions that were in the early stages of splitting Hollywood apart.
Targets is essentially two films in conflict with each other right up to the final minute. Its logline is a ripped-from-the-headlines depiction of what, at the time, was a reasonably unheard-of phenomenon: a mass shooting. Lifting thematic elements of the infamous case of Charles Whitman, who climbed to an observation deck at the University of Texas in Austin, on August 1, 1966, and picked people off with a rifle,...

In addition to the dustup between the siblings, there was some friction between Meghan and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) over the flower girls’ dresses. Now, body language experts are analyzing gestures William and Kate displayed that day that may have been signs all was not well.

Shohei Ohtani tied a career-high with 13 strikeouts as the Los Angeles Angels beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 on Wednesday night. But that wasn’t the biggest news on the night.
Ohtani become the second player in history to record 500 strikeouts and hit at least 100 home runs, joining Babe Ruth.
“I wanted to get through six or seven innings, minimum,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “More than the strikeouts, I’m more disappointed that I didn’t get that far in the game.”
Ohtani recorded his last seven outs via strikeout. He also went three for five and drove in a run, extending his hitting streak to a season-high seven games.

Chicago – Robert Marvin “Bobby” Hull needs no introduction in the City of Chicago, as his career as a Chicago Blackhawks hockey player was as legendary and influential as Babe Ruth was to baseball. The “Golden Jet,” which was his nickname, and the Jet recently passed away at age 84 on January 30th, 2023.
His story began in a small town in Ontario, Canada, where he played Junior “B” hockey for the Woodstock Warriors, as a youngster in the 1950s. In 1957, the Chicago Blackhawks took a chance on the then 18 year old Hull, and drafted him into the NHL. Four years later, the “Hawks” won their first Stanley Cup in 28 years, with a team led by Hull – who scored 50 goals that year – Stan Mikita, Pierre Pilote and goalie Glenn Hall.

Gwen Stefani Tears Up Thinking About Her And Blake Shelton’s Final Season On ‘The Voice’ (Exclusive)
Gwen Stefani is having a hard time with the idea that this is her last season of “The Voice” with husband Blake Shelton.
“It’s just been a really amazing season, too short,” the season 22 coach shared with Et’s Cassie Dilaura ahead of Monday’s live semifinals show. “It’s mine and Blake’s last season… I can’t even get the words out of my mouth ’cause it sucks.”
“I never in my lifetime would’ve pictured me doing something like this, and it’s been one of the most fun things I’ve ever done,” she added. “I love being a coach, I love watching the contestants grow, I love having an impact, it’s super inspiring for me. During the 2009 recession, History Channel found an unlikely hit in Pawn Stars, the unscripted series in which everyday people found life-changing treasures in their attic and turned them into cash at a time when money was tight.
The series has since gone on to become a massive hit. More than 700 episodes have been commissioned, with repeats airing across History, Lifetime, A&e and Netflix. Several others in the so-called transactional TV genre launched around the same time, series like Shark Tank, American Pickers, Storage Wars, American Restoration and others. A spinoff of the successful franchise that started it all, Pawn Stars Do America, will launch Nov. 9 on History.

When Michael Stein, an actor, stand-up and friend of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, visited the set of Anderson’s pornography opus Boogie Nights in 1997, he noticed a cast member was missing. “I said,” recalls Stein, “‘Hey where’s Burt?’” Burt Reynolds was playing Jack Horner, a classy porno director and mentor to Mark Wahlberg’s up-and-coming porn stud, Dirk Diggler. The former Hollywood alpha would ultimately be Oscar-nominated for the role, but on the set, he was peeved. Anderson, chain-smoking American Spirit cigarettes with irritation, turned to Stein: “He’s in the trailer, man… He doesn’t want to hang out with us.’”
Refusing to come out of his trailer was one thing; elsewhere on the shoot, it almost came to blows – Reynolds took a swing at the 26-year-old Anderson. “I wasn’t there for that,” says Stein. “I heard about it though!”

New York Yankees star Aaron Judge broke a 61-year-old record when he hit his 62nd home run in a game Tuesday against the Texas Rangers.
The slugger made history by breaking the American League record for single-season home runs that had been held by Roger Maris since 1961. Maris, in turn, had broken Babe Ruth’s record of 60 homers that he set in 1927. Judge had tied Maris for 60 home runs last week when the Yankees faced off the Toronto Blue Jays.

The New York Yankees' Aaron Judge just made baseball history. The 30-year-old hit his 61st home run of the season during a Sept. 28 game against the Toronto Blue Jays, officially tying Roger Maris' American League record. The historic shot came in at the seventh inning, when Judge smashed a ball from Tim Mayza over the left field wall at the Rogers Centre. Prior to Maris, Babe Ruth held the record with 60 single-season home runs in 1927. With seven more games remaining, Judge could very well surpass Maris' 1961 record for most home runs in a season. However, he'll still need a dozen more successful hits if he wants to match Barry Bond's MLB record of 73...

Aaron Judge just made history during the Yankees game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Officially, he tied the all-time American League (and New York Yankees) record for most home runs in a season, held by Roger Maris since 1961. But for baseball purists (like my editor who forced me to write that headline), Judge tied the record for all-time home runs in a season league-wide.
During the 7th inning against the Toronto Blue Jays, the California native hit the ball over the bullpen and against the left field wall, marking his 61st home run this season.

New York attorney general Letitia James started the week with a 250 million civil suit against the Trump Organization September 21, alleging years of fraudulent business practices. She ended her week on another controversial note, albeit one of much less national importance: She’s calling on Apple TV+ to make September 23’s New York Yankees game available for all New Yorkers to watch without a paid subscription. Specifically, to watch it on local Yankees-focused cable channel Yes.

The New York Yankees are hosting the Boston Red Sox for a four-game series, but this edition of the teams’ fierce rivalry has different stakes than usual.
Rather than win-loss records or the playoff race, the main focus this time will be whether Yankees slugger Aaron Judge sets an American League record for home runs. And, to the consternation of media watchers and many Yankee fans, tonight’s series opener will only be available on Apple TV+, not on the Yes Network or anywhere else on the linear TV dial.

Aaron Judge continued his pursuit of baseball’s (legitimate) home run record Tuesday night when the New York Yankees outfielder hit his 60th home run of the year, tying him with Babe Ruth’s mark and putting him within one long ball of matching Roger Maris’ Yankees and American League record.
Maris’ sons Roger Jr. and Kevin were on hand at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night for Judge’s 60th homer, which kicked off the team’s improbable comeback from a four-run 9th inning deficit to win 9-8 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The world was at war 80 years ago. The United States was grieving over the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 by the Japanese military and the defeat of our forces that month at Wake Island. And then the beloved Carole Lombard, her mother, servicemen and the crew perished in a plane crash west of Las Vegas on January 16, 1942. She was returning to Hollywood after raising 2 million in a war bond drive in Indianapolis.

Some screen actors sneak up on you over the course of multiple memorable supporting roles, while others jar your consciousness like a crack of lightning. The latter was my experience with Ray Liotta, in a movie I walked into not even knowing his character would be part of the plot.
The film in question was Jonathan Demme’s 1986 “Something Wild,” which starts as a kooky urban comedy about bad girl (or is she?) Audrey, played by Melanie Griffith, who convinces Jeff Daniels’ upright businessman (or is he?) to go further and further out of his comfort zone. The movie switches from screwball to thriller with the appearance of Liotta as Audrey’s ex Ray, a recently-released convict who will go to any lengths to get her back.

There's a famous tale in the annals of Major League Baseball history, concerning one Hall of Fame slugger (who you may or may not have heard of) named Babe Ruth. The most prolific home run hitter of his day once supposedly "called his shot" in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, pointing beyond the outfield to where he intended to launch a baseball into orbit and subsequently doing just that moments later. It's a great (if most likely apocryphal) story, but one that still resonates for a reason. What does that have to with anything? Not much, but I wanted to work...

His wife Shelley confirmed his death on Facebook, writing, “This guy… After a 10 year battle with A-typical Parkinson’s, Art Lafleur, the love of my life passed away.”
Lafleur was also known for “The Santa Clause 2” and “The Santa Clause 3,” in which he played the Tooth Fairy, and as Chuck Gandil, the ghost White Sox first baseman in “Field of Dreams.”
“He was a generous and selfless man which carried over to his acting but more importantly it was who he was for his family and friends. Every location or set we visited him on, the cast and crew would introduce themselves and tell Molly, Joe, and me how Art spoke of us with such pride and love.

Art Lafleur, the actor who was best known for playing Babe Ruth in The Sandlot, has died after a 10-year battle with A-typical Parkinson’s, according to his wife Shelley. He was 78.
Among his most memorable Sandlot lines was, “Remember kid, there’s heroes and there’s Legends. Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die!”
While Lafleur is best known for The Sandlot, his face is recognizable from films such as Field of Dreams, in which he played Black Sox ringleader Chick Gandil and The Santa Clause 2 and 3, in which he played the Tooth Fairy; as well as innumerable roles in classic TV series such as M*A*S*H, Lou Grant, Soap, Webster, The A-Team, Hill Street Blues, Thirtysomething, Northern Exposure, Home Improvement, Malcolm in the Middle, Doogie Howser, Coach, Baywatch, ER, Jag, House and The Mentalist.
Ironically, despite his list of credits, Lafleur didn’t start...

As the Los Angeles Angels’ pitcher-slugger Shohei Ohtani moves toward a Major League Baseball feat that has not been accomplished since Babe Ruth, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith went on First Take Monday morning to say Ohtani’s discomfort with speaking English in interviews hurts the marketability of the sport.
Asked directly by First Take host Molly Qerim if it was good for MLB “that Ohtani’s the top attraction,” Smith replied, “Not to me.” He then went on to explain: “If you are a star and you need an interpreter…that might have something to do with your inability to ingratiate yourself with that young demographic to attract them to the sport.
“Baseball is in trouble,” said Smith. “The audience for Major League Baseball repeatedly gets older. It’s not getting younger. That younger demographic, which is the target for all the advertisers and sponsors…that’s the NBA and the NFL.
