Before Morgan Spector ever put on the three-piece suit of railroad baron George Russell, he was concerned audiences might feel alienated by the opulence of HBO’s “The Gilded Age.”
“The vast majority of people just don’t have anything in common with someone like George Russell,” he says. “When I first read these scripts, it was in 2020. Bernie Sanders was still a frontrunner in the presidential campaign, and class politics were in the news. There was a sense that maybe we are tired of billionaires and their power.”
He’s not wrong for wondering just how elastic viewer tolerance would be for 19th century cultural warfare between old and new money. But Spector credits creator Julian Fellowes with recognizing the timeless appetite for sudsy yet sharp historical fiction that places privileged characters and their often-trivial problems in the context of a transformational moment in history. During the show’s second season,...

President Joe Biden condemned by the move by the International Criminal Court to seek arrest warrants against Israeli leaders, saying that there was “no equivalence” between that country’s actions and those of Hamas.
Earlier today, the Icc issued a legal report in which a panel of international law experts supported a prosecutor’s conclusion that there were “reasonable grounds” to believe that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and minister of defense Yoav Gallant committed war crimes, in addition to leaders of Hamas. Among the experts was Amal Clooney, a special adviser to the prosecutor and wife of actor George Clooney.
The Icc’s move to seek arrest warrants drew immediate pushback from Biden and leaders of both parties in Congress.
Speaking in the Rose Garden at a ceremony to recognize Jewish American Heritage Month, Biden said, “Let me be clear: We reject the Icc’s application for arrest warrants against Israeli leaders.

After providing vocal support for Bernie Sanders and then Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential primaries and election, Cardi B has no interest in getting involved in 2024. In her new Rolling Stone cover story, the rapper, political junkie, and occasional pundit discussed her disillusionment with all sides of the American political system, saying of Biden and Donald Trump: “I don’t fuck with both of y’all niggas.”
While Cardi said she saw Trump’s presidency as a major threat, she’s felt “layers and layers of disappointment” during the Biden administration.

Legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and front man for the Who Roger Daltrey has a solo North American tour on June 10. So he stopped by Bill Maher’s Real Time on Friday to do some reminiscing on his long career and what comes next.
After thanking Daltrey “for all the entertainment over the years,” Maher got right to the point: “I don’t remember seeing you with a shirt,” he said, offering a brief montage of Daltrey in his prime, sans shirt.
“A little bit too much information,” Daltrey said, and then admitted, “I get incredibly hot when I sing. It’s like a furnace.” Still, he allowed, at 80 years old, he’s more likely to keep the shirt on this time around.

Hindi cinema is scattered with random movies about jingoism. Pathan, Jawan, Tiger 3, and the latest Fighter are prime examples of films that had nothing new to offer. Commando by Vipul Shah and Ib 71, starring Vidyut Jamwal, these two films went off the deep end and lost the plot in jingoistic means. Ruslaan is one such film that narrates the story of a young man who is keen to join the Indian intelligence, and in that pursuit, he is declared a terrorist after a mission goes wrong.
Spoilers Ahead
How did Ruslaan become an orphan?
The movie begins with a bunch of terrorists meeting to finalize the attack they had planned on a school. They were waiting for another associate to arrive with the arms and ammunition. One of them was the owner of the house and father to Ruslaan, who was keen to learn how to play the guitar.

“Things, I guess, will change overtime because you do only pick one candidate at the end of the day,” Palma stated during a meeting with Republicans in New York.
“But the Kennedy voter and the [Donald Trump] voter – the enemy – our mutual enemy – is Biden,” she added. “Since Biden is counting on us with [Kennedy] in the mix, my – my thought is for the Republicans.”
“See Bobby – right now – he’s pulling from both sides,” she continued. “Right now, he’s actually pulling a bit more from Biden, which explains why the DNC [Democratic National Committee] is kind of ganging up on him. They have a special committee to go after independent candidates.”

Exclusive: Vice President Kamala Harris is heading back to late-night.

It is her latest appearance on the ABC show; Harris previously appeared on Kimmel’s show in March 2019, when she was running for top office.
During that appearance, she talked about the campaign trail, said “age is more than a chronological fact” when asked whether Biden or Senator Bernie Sanders were too old to run for President, and noted that she was “open to the discussion” of getting rid of the Electoral college.
Kimmel has previously defended Vice President Harris’ low approval ratings, blaming “sexism and racism”.

Former President Donald Trump accused President Joe Biden of being high on cocaine during his State of the Union speech last month and demanded that the president take a drug test before future debates.
“I think what happened is you know that white stuff that they happened to find, which happened to be cocaine in the White House, I don’t know, I think something’s going on there, because I watched this State of the Union, and he was all jacked up at the beginning,” Trump said during an interview with the conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.
Trump was referencing the discovery last summer of a powdered substance in the White House, which later tested positive for cocaine. The Secret Service was unable to determine who left it there but speculated it was a visitor.
“By the end, he was fading fast,” Trump added. “There’s something going on there.

Before I watched “Civil War,” two publicists working on the dystopian thriller assured me that it isn’t a political film.
In the movie, Kirsten Dunst plays a dogged photojournalist muscling her way through a smoldering Washington D.C., trying to document the bitter conflict between two heavily armed factions tearing America apart. I didn’t buy that it didn’t have something to say about this moment. And neither does Dunst.
“So, do you believe that it’s not political? I mean … it’s an anti war film,” Dunst tells me with a shrug. “This movie, after you see it, you want to talk about it for a while with people. And I think any movie that does that is incredible.”

Biden crossed the 1,968 delegates needed for the Democratic nomination with his win of the Georgia primary, according to network projections.

This cycle’s Super Tuesday lacked suspense — and that showed in the viewership numbers.
About 11.4 million viewers tuned into coverage during the peak hour of 10 p.m. Et, when the three major broadcast networks joined with the three major cable networks with live coverage, according to early numbers from Nielsen. That’s far less than the nearly 19 million who tuned in across those networks during the last cycle, in 2020.
But Super Tuesday 2020 featured the surprise showing of Joe Biden against Bernie Sanders, in a race that was still undoubtedly competitive. By contrast, there were few surprises in this year’s results, as Donald Trump and Biden dominated their respective contests. Nikki Haley, Trump’s last remaining rival for the nomination, dropped out earlier today, as did Dean Phillips, who had challenged Biden.

The suspense this Super Tuesday may be in watching how all of the networks try to make the night suspenseful.
Some 16 states and one territory will vote: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. A Democratic caucus also is being held in American Samoa, and Iowa Democrats also will reveal their results.
But with Joe Biden and Donald Trump on their way to a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, coverage Tuesday will focus on margins of victory, when each candidate will clinch their nomination and what’s next from now until Election Day. There also will be attention to down-ballot races, including California’s Senate primary to fill the seat long held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca).

When Saturday Night Live castmember Bowen Yang doesn’t entirely approve of a guest on the iconic NBC late night show, he has ways of making it known.
The latest example is Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who made a controversial surprise appearance on the show this weekend, during which she played herself in a mock CNN town hall sketch.
Yang, who has been an SNL castmember since 2019, took to Instagram after the show and posted a photo of a backstage note addressed to Haley that read, “Welcome to Studio 8H! From, Lorne + everyone at SNL.” Yang commented on the post, “everyone! :)”
That post has since been deleted, but here is a screenshot:
It’s an attempt at keeping things subtle — like, if you want to assume Yang is being totally sarcastic based merely on everything else known about his public persona, well, that’s on you. Though some...

Nikki Haley made a surprise appearance in the Saturday Night Live cold open tonight, this time as a “concerned South Carolina voter” who asks questions of Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) at a CNN town hall.
The skit had Gayle King and Charles Barkley, hosts of CNN’s King Charles, moderating the town hall with the former president, with Johnson again playing Trump and with his propensity to sprinkle in political rhetoric with a pop culture stream of consciousness.
Haley, who has stepped up her attacks on Trump following the New Hampshire primary, drew loud applause from the SNL audience as she appeared in the town hall audience to ask him a question.
“Why won’t you debate Nikki Haley?” she asked Trump.
Johnson, as Trump, replied, “Oh my God! It’s her, the woman who was in charge of security on January 6th. It’s Pelosi.”

There have been many mind-blowing revelations on Finding Your Roots, the Henry Louis Gates Jr.-hosted PBS television series that employs a team of professional genealogists to trace celebrities’ ancestral histories. We’ve learned that Bernie Sanders is related to his SNL doppelgänger Larry David, that actor Joe Manganiello is part-Black and descended from slaves, and that LeVar Burton is part-white, which caused the Roots star to jokingly scream, “Nooooooo!”
The Jan. 30 episode of Finding Your Roots, now in its tenth season, focuses on comedians Bob Odenkirk and Iliza Shlesinger.

Donald Trump’s victory in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday may have been driven by record turnout, but viewership across the three major news networks was way down from four years ago, with primetime coverage averaging almost 6 million.
In 2020, almost 8.7 million watched the coverage of the primary, which focused on the race for the Democratic nomination.
That’s still better than the 4.67 million who watched the coverage of the Iowa caucuses on the networks last week, when networks went up against an NFL playoff game and the Emmy Awards.
Fox News topped this year’s primetime New Hampshire coverage, averaging 3.26 million, compared to 1.75 million for MSNBC and 994,000 for CNN. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 453,000, followed by CNN with 246,000 and MSNBC with 237,000.
Peak viewership came in the 8-9 p.m. Et hour, when networks called the race for Trump. Fox News averaged 3.91 million, followed by MSNBC with 1.98 million and CNN with 1.25 million.

The world may see its first-ever trillionaire within the next 10 years, the anti-poverty group Oxfam said in a report published on Monday, reflecting the increasingly large wealth divide between the few of the world’s richest people and the rest of the population below them.
Oxfam’s report, titled Inequality Inc., paints a bleak picture of a dynamic between the world’s elite and impoverished that has only grown worse since the pandemic started in 2020. Since then, the wealth of the world’s five richest men — Tesla CEO Elon Musk,...

Meryl Streep has won Oscars, Emmys, a bevy of Golden Globes and multiple SAG Awards. She was awarded the AFI Life Achievement Award, a Kennedy Center Honor and even the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. If there’s an award, Streep has probably won it. But there’s a prize that has eluded her all these years: the Grammy. This year she received her seventh nomination from the recording academy. Will she finally take the trophy home?
This year she’s up for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording for “Big Tree,” the audio book recording of Brian Selznick‘s middle-grade adventure novel. She was previously nominated five times for recording children’s projects: “The Velveteen Rabbit,” “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” “The Tailor of Gloucester,” “The One and Only Shrek” and “Charlotte’s Web.” And she has one musical nomination for her contributions to the “Mamma Mia!

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Oklahoma) said that Oklahomans “would be pretty upset” if he had not stood up to Teamsters leader Sean O’Brien during a Senate hearing on Tuesday.
Mullin and O’Brien went back and forth at each other amid a conversation about labor unions and even threatened a fight, with Mullin standing up from his chair before Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) stopped him.
Mullin defended his actions during an interview with Sean Hannity later that day.
“He called you out,” Hannity said to Mullin. “You called him out for calling you out. And that’s kind of old school, the way it used to be.”
When asked if his conduct aligned with what is expected of a U.S. senator, Mullin responded that he is “a guy from Oklahoma first.”

Leslie Jones is disappointed by the near fight that occurred in the Senate on Tuesday, but not because anything Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin did. No — the comedian’s displeasure has to do with Bernie Sanders breaking things up.
“Back off, Bernie! Bernie, shut up, they was about to fight! I wanted to see that!” Jones said on her second night guest hosting “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central. “Is that what America has come to, people fighting in the Senate? Because if it is, I want in.”
“Lindsey Graham, I want you in the ring. Ted Cruz, bring your weird ass beard so I can beat your ass. Mitch! Mitch! Mitch!” Jones yelled while snapping at the widely shared video of McConnell freezing. “Aw, somebody already hit him.”

Capitol Hill was the site of more than one tussle between lawmakers on Tuesday.
Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy got physical with Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenessee). Burchett accused McCarthy of elbowing him in “the kidney” in a Capitol hallway.
Burchett was one of the conservative members of the House that voted to oust McCarthy.
Burchett told reporters that McCarthy elbowed him in the back as he was talking to a reporter.
“I ran after McCarthy and I said, ‘What’d you so that for?’ He acted like, ‘Oh, I didn’t do anything,'” Burchett explained.
Burchett then yelled at McCarthy, screaming “Hey Kevin, have some guts.”
McCarthy denied intentionally hurting Burchett.
“I didn’t shove or elbow him, it’s a tight hallway,” he said.
Hours later, during a House Oversight Committee hearing on the General Services Administration, Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky) engaged in a heated conversation with Rep.

On Tuesday, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Oklahoma) challenged the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Sean O’Brien, to a fight telling him to “stand your b— up” and settle a longstanding conflict during a congressional hearing.
“This is the time, this is the place,” Mullin said to O’Brien after reading a series of tweets that O’Brien had posted about the senator in the past. “If you want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here.”
Though the two men never got face to face, they went back and forth insulting each other for around six minutes while Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) yelled at them to stop.
“You are a United States senator!” Sanders scolded Mullin.
Earlier this year, O’Brien took to X, formerly Twitter, to call Mullin a “moron” and say he was “full of s—” after Mullin criticized O’Brien at another hearing.

Congress once again got pretty close to a physical brawl during a committee meeting this week, and the women of “The View” were disgusted — but also a little amused — by it on Wednesday morning. For host Sara Haines, it was reminiscent of a certain someone who went viral on “Dr. Phil.”
On Tuesday, Congressman Tim Burchett said he “got elbowed in the back” by Kevin McCarthy, while Senator Bernie Sanders had to actually break up a fight between Oklahoma senator Markwayne Mullin and the president of the Teamsters union, Sean O’Brien.
After a disagreement, Mullin said “You want to run your mouth? We can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here,” and challenged O’Brien to “stand your butt up.”
“Why did they all turn into the ‘catch me outside’ girl?” Haines mocked. “Like, they’re literally ready to beat the crap out of every single one of them.

Members of Congress are seeking to avoid a government shutdown by the end of the week and thousands of demonstrators have gathered on the Capitol lawn in support of Israel, but the real theatrics have been inside, with resentments nearly coming to physical blows.

With the SAG-AFTRA strike in the rearview, Fran Drescher will soon have more time on her hands to consider career moves outside of union negotiations. But she knows for sure one job she doesn’t want.
“Meryl Streep said to me, ‘This is great, now go run for president,’” the president of Hollywood’s largest union recounts with a laugh over the phone Thursday afternoon, just one day after the union’s negotiating committee — led by Drescher — announced that they had reached a tentative three-year contract deal with Hollywood studios after spending 118 days on strike. “I don’t want that job. It’s been a tough week in the world, and that posed a difficult challenge for Bill Maher on his Real Time show on Friday. How do you conduct a show built on political comedy when the subject matter is so grim?
But Maher navigated the thorny issues with grace, finding the humor in throwbacks to old reliables like Kanye West and Donald Trump while keeping the focus on whatever solutions might be gleaned from his guests.
Maher made no secret of his allegiance, stating up front during his panel discussion that he believed Israel has the moral high ground in this conflict. That was challenged at times by James Kirchick, columnist for Tablet Magazine, writer-at-large for Air Mail, and author of Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington, and particularly Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy and former foreign policy advisor to Senator...

A new presidential election cycle is heating up, and Bernie Sanders finds himself in an unfamiliar position: on the sidelines.
The independent senator from Vermont, who rallied millions of progressive supporters behind his bids in 2016 and 2020, is not making a run for the White House in 2024. Instead, he is now talking up his former rival Joe Biden — as well as the dire threat to democracy posed by another Trump term.
Sanders sings Biden’s praises as president, insisting he has plenty to be “proud” of from his first term. But...

Hello Dankness Review: A Tiresome Feature-Length Shitpost Remixing American Pop Culture and Politics
If the joy of art is that it can be interpreted in infinite ways over time, then is a project which “remixes” classic movie scenes by forcing them into the current political climate redundant in concept? Take Joe Dante’s The Burbs, one of the key films featured in art collective Soda Jerk’s recycled musical Hello Dankness, and which remains relevant because its combination of suburban malaise and paranoia continues to echo into our sharply divided political climate. Does lazily editing yard signs for Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump into characters’ front gardens really feel like a bold new addition to such an older work? Or does it just state the obvious as to how a modern audience might interpret the character archetypes it presented us with in the first place?

Spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" follow.
It's been over a week since season 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" wrapped. I'd call the season a success; it built upon the rock-solid first season and swung further toward the fences. "Strange New Worlds" season 2 was daring, goofy, and pushed "Star Trek" into new frontiers while capping off with a bold cliffhanger right out of "The Next Generation."
While the premiere is at least a year away, it was confirmed back in March 2023 that "Strange New Worlds" has been renewed for a third season. The cast has already floated some ideas; Rebecca Romijn (Commander Una-Chin Riley/Number One) wants an episode showing how her character met Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), for example. But it's not just the show's cast and crew with hopes and dreams for season 3.
After season 1 ended, I wrote a list of what /Film wanted out...

Editor’s note: As part of Deadline’s ongoing coverage of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, we want to give voice to other Hollywood workers who are impacted by the work stoppages. This column was written by Jonathan Daniel Brown, the head of Party Crasher Films in New York City. Best known for starring in the 2012 film Project X, his life’s mission is recapture the subversive and countercultural magic of 1970s and ’90s Hollywood through a slate of bold, rebellious and wildly entertaining independent films.
After 14 years of working as an actor in L.A, I realized I could no longer find success or happiness in a town that rejects fresh voices while blowing $300 million on movies starring 80-year-old men. I decided to set my sights on the world of New York’s independent film scene, where a new generation of geniuses operate in the shadows. You won...
