Following the recipe he implemented for “A Bride for Rip Van Winkle” and “Last Letter”, of shooting movies based on his own novel, Shunji Iwai has come up with “Kyrie”, a 3-hour movie that details the story of its three main characters over the span of 13 years. At the same time, it functions as a promotional piece for the idols in the cast, mainly Aina The End whose songs are heard throughout.
Kyrie is screening at Nippon Connection
The movie starts in the present, but eventually unfolds over several different time axes. In the present, Kyrie, a mysterious girl who only whispers except when she is singing, is trying to become a professional musician, but has no luck, even having to live on the streets. Eventually, another girl her age approaches her, Ikko, who immediately convinces her to become her manager, with the two soon sharing an apartment.

Shiori Ito’s feature documentary “Black Box Diaries” about the investigation of the director’s own sexual assault, earned a standing ovation following its Hot Docs Canadian premiere on Monday.
The 103-minute film tracks Ito’s arduous, five-year struggle to bring to justice renowned TV reporter Noriyuki Yamaguchi, who sexually assaulted her. In 2015, Ito – then a 26-year-old intern at Thomson Reuters – went out for a drink with Yamaguchi, only to become intoxicated and taken against her will to his hotel room.
In Japan, according to the film, only 4% of victims of rape report their cases to police. But Ito “felt a strong desire for the truth to be known and to change Japanese society in order to prevent what happened to me from happening to more women.”
In 2017, Ito’s memoir about the rape, titled “Black Box,” was published and went on to win the Free Press Association of Japan...

Unexpected, filled with erotic tension and discovering the spiritual dimension of existence. The cinema of Chihiro Ito seems to belong to an alternate reality. The audiences of Five Flavours will have a chance to see two films of the artist whose cinema is a breath of fresh air in recent Japanese independent cinema. The director herself will be the Festival guest.
Chihiro Ito may not yet be a household name in the world of film, but the Japanese director has already proven she has a lot of talent and sensitivity. She may be just beginning her career as film director, but her artistic output has been recognized for years – she has been a successful writer, screenwriter, and playwirght. Before turning to the camera, she wrote a few novels and film scripts (including one for Isao Yukisada).

One of the winners of this year's Skip City International D-Cinema Festival is Kazuomi Makita's “Hierophanie”, an intimate drama about grief and the feeling of helplessness as we watch people's lives crumble. The director has been invited to the festival several times, with his short features “Point of the Love”, “Time Will Tell” and “The Birth”, making “Hierophanie” his first long feature. While many of the themes his movie deals with are more or less stables within the Japanese indie community, there is something quite special about his approach in terms of storytelling and visuals which makes “Hierophanie” stand out.

Yuta Noguchi departs from his usual work in television to write and direct his bittersweet directorial debut, “Wandering Memories.” Implementing the knowledge taught by his filmmaking mentor Ken Ochiai, who also produces the project, Noguchi puts together a story heavily inspired by his personal emotional experiences. Those memories are a blueprint for constructing a fictional narrative that sticks close to reality.

J-horror has taken a different face recently in the country, with local filmmakers more interested in exploring the borders of the category and how much a realistic base (as in the case of actual events) can be implemented in such types of films. Yosuke Goto also implements this approach in “Bldg N.”, based on a true story that took place in an apartment complex in Gifu Prefecture in 2000.

In true fashion, the inspiration for the Japanese horror film Bldg. N is an urban legend. In the early 2000s, there was a media storm about the “poltergeist apartments” in Tomika, Gifu. This new complex lured many tenants with its cheap rent, but they gradually cleared out once the paranormal activity began and the news coverage became unreasonable. The reports on the supposed haunting don’t come across as especially unique, so director and writer Yōsuke Gotō understandably had to fill in the gaps when writing his adaptation of the incident. What he came up with is indeed unusual, given that Japanese ghost films don’t typically include Midsommar-esque death cults.
Bldg. N (or N-Goto) opens with the literal definition of thanatophobia, an intense fear of death and the dying process. The story then introduces the character afflicted with said phobia and shows how much of a toll it has taken on her life.

A momentary lapse in the frenzied disorder escalating uncontrollably from the urban machine, two young women detach themselves from the city's pulsating rhythm and flow: one, a musician, confides to her parents on the phone her dream may not be as attainable as previously hoped; the other, a callgirl, patiently awaits for her driver as she flits in and out of the phone conversation unfolding just feet away from her, the realizations made and the desires to quit striking a chord as she sips on her green tea through a straw. This precursory distraction, a fleeting moment of intense introspection, distinguishes “Detouring Blue”'s ravishing torpor with neither the promise nor the hope of resolution. Instead, Ryo Kimura submerges his cast and his audience deep into an unfulfilling emptiness, one where escape feels permanently out of reach.

A gentle stillness revives itself at the end and beginning of every breath, its vibrancy tangible when tuned into its frequency at each precise moment. It is a calmness, a small measure of peace, seldom found under the neon buzz of a megacity such as Tokyo or any given metropolis around the globe wherever the urban frenzy is ceaseless. Life far removed from time's boorish grasp – its frantic march toward the inevitable, its relentless demand for toil and progress – finds a gentler purpose: an opportunity for spiritual detoxification, a glimmer of strength to face the past head-on. For lurking in the periphery, obscured by shadow, are the ghosts and demons in constant pursuit, and no amount of running can keep them at bay forever. In “Side by Side”, Chihiro Ito painstakingly curates this serene tapestry in which Kentaro Sakaguchi's Miyama eschews his trauma and makes his escape.

On November 20, 1971, Nikkatsu launched its new Roman Porno line with the double bill of Hayashi Ishao’s “Castle Orgies” and Nishimura Shogoro’s “Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair”. The following 17-year period saw a grand total of at least 850 titles (another catalogue mentions 1133) released under this new brand name. before the series came to a halt in 1988. Second entry of lesbian interest in the reboot of Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno series, “When the Rain Falls” is probably the most grounded to reality entry of the 8 that comprise it, something that does come as a surprise, considering the director, Shusuke Kaneko, has movies in the Gamera, Godzilla and Death Note franchise under his belt.

After having its world premiere in October at the Tokyo International Film Festival, “Sayonara, Girls” by Nakagawa Shun has been slated to have its theatrical release in February next year. A coming-of-age movie, it reifies sentiment in memories that make youth an inimitable part of one’s existence and explores the decisions that young people suddenly make at the conjuncture of departure, of bidding goodbye to a point in their lives that they could never go back to.
Based on the 2012 series of short stories by award-winning writer Asai Ryo called “Girls Do Not Graduate”, the movie chronicles the last few days left in the high school lives of four girls, who happen to belong to the final batch of their academy as their school will literally be dismantled and torn down into pieces after their graduation. It’s a setting ripe for reminiscing, jolting realizations and a race against regrets.

It seems like the erotic industry of Japan, and partticulary its demise, is becoming a hot topic for the local industry, with “Naked Director”, “Dancing in Her Dreams” and “Dynamite Graffiti” being just few of the titles focusing on the subject and its various instances.
