Lauren Smith, the 36-year-old home cook from Santa Monica, California was eliminated in 11th place on Thursday’s episode of “Next Level Chef.” Despite Team Richard Blais cooking in the top kitchen, Lauren struggled to find the ingredients she needed on the platform and found herself up for elimination against Team Nyesha Arrington‘s Mada Abdelhamid. Watch her exclusive video interview with Gold Derby above.
“It was just a bad grab,” she tells Gold Derby. “I grabbed that bell pepper and I just didn’t know what to do with it. I didn’t grab enough. Also, just the pressure of being in the top kitchen. We were used to the ‘Blaisment.’ I was comfortable down there.”

Arceli “Ari” Pulido, the 31-year-old professional chef from San Diego, California was eliminated in 14th place on Thursday’s episode of “Next Level Chef.” Despite Team Nyesha Arrington cooking in the top kitchen, Ari struggled in the “Curry in a Hurry” challenge. “Curry is not usually in a hurry,” she tells Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson. Watch her exclusive video interview above.
Ari explains that being a professional chef may have actually worked against her in this specific challenge, where the cooks had just 30 minutes to prepare a dish. “It takes away from the art of it,” she says. “I cook very passionately. I like to do things the right way from scratch. I go against the grain when I’m like, ‘I’ll just whip something together.’ It’s so not in my nature.

The instances in which Netflix has licensed a meh show and turned it into a hit are well-documented. The so-called “Netflix Effect” has perhaps never been more perfectly demonstrated than this summer with “Suits,” an old USA Network legal drama that spent a record 12 straight weeks as the no. 1 title across all of streaming, per Nielsen.
Other legacy Hollywood studios have gotten the message, and the licensing (to Netflix) floodgates have opened. Not that Netflix is interested in returning the favor — and it doesn’t sound like that’s going to change anytime soon.
Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said his platform’s “Suits” success can be attributed to “the combination of our large subscriber base and our recommendation system that knew to put ‘Suits’ in front of people who were going to love it the most.”
“That’s a reflection of what we do best,” he continued on a Tuesday conference call with the media.

Netflix’s The Night Agent Season 1 leads the pack, with 812.1 million hours streamed. Ginny & Georgia Season 2 takes the silver medal slot with 665.1 million hours, followed by Ahn Gil-ho’s Korean drama The Glory at 622.8 million hours and Tim Burton’s Wednesday getting creepy and kooky for 507.7 million hours. Netflix is expanding its viewership data transparency with the release of its first biannual report covering six months of streaming habits on the platform, revealing for the first time how licensed content like USA Network drama “Suits” performs alongside the streamer’s originals.
The new report, titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” covers more than 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion hours viewed between January-June 2023. It includes: 1) hours viewed for every title (both Netflix original and licensed TV shows and movies) watched for more than 50,000 hours during that period; 2) the premiere date for any Netflix original TV series or film; and 3) whether a title was available globally.
Each piece of that information is key here, because these findings aren’t as cut and dried as Netflix’s weekly Top 10 reports and “Most Popular” lists. For example, at the top of this report is “The Night Agent,” a series that debuted...

New Delhi, Jan 17 (Ians) Former world no 1 Kento Momota had a disappointing start to 2023 season as the Japanese shuttler lost in the first round of the India Open Super 750 here on Tuesday.
Two-time former world champion lost 15-21, 11-21 to Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke, whom he had beaten in five out of six past meetings.
Momota, who captured a record 11 titles in 2019, had a forgettable campaign last year as he lost in the first round of a tournament five times, and in the second round twice and didn’t win a single trophy last season.
Coming off a victory at last month’s Japanese national championships, Momota had missed the season opener Malaysia Open Super 1000 last week, due to flu.
In women’s singles, Rio Olympic champion Carolina Marin outplayed Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-13, 21-18. The Spaniard had an injury setback and is on the trail to find her best form.

"Trick 'r Treat" has hit milestones many horror movies don't even dream of in the 15 years since its festival release, playing hip film festivals, earning a comic book adaptation, and even inspiring a section of Universal's Halloween Horror Nights attraction. Yet somehow, the film has never gotten a proper theatrical release until now. This fall, Warner Brothers is set to remedy that. According to the official WB Classic Films Twitter, "Trick 'r Treat" will be playing in Regal Cinemas just in time for Halloween.
The theatrical announcement seems somewhat spontaneous today, as it seems a horror-loving Twitter user was among the first to pick up on the upcoming release. On Wednesday, Twitter user @dansferatu shared a post about Regal's October lineup, which in addition to "Trick 'R Treat" includes "The Lost Boys," "Scream 2," and "Halloween." Summer is usually the time for tea of the iced variety, but if one is into cozy murder mysteries, a warm cuppa will do just as well to accompany the influx of detective shows from overseas or across the border. “Frankie Drake Mysteries” arrives on Ovation’s shores by way of Canada this Saturday, and it’s the entertaining but not overly taxing fare that is best consumed during these warmer months.
Set in 1920s Toronto, the series follows in the footsteps of shows like “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” from Down Under, and is created, written, and directed by women. Besides taking place in the same era, albeit on the other side of the globe, “Frankie Drake Mysteries” also features an independent-minded woman who flouts gender norms and solves crimes that the police often overlook. The titular Frankie (Lauren Lee Smith) is daring and aspirational for the time; she wears trousers,...

Behold, summer! Now that spring (and the accompanying closing of this year’s Emmys eligibility) is in the rearview mirror, the warmer months bring plenty of new programming. Some are literary adaptations, others are American versions of global series, and one is based on a show that doesn’t actually exist at all. June is a treasure trove.

Miracle of miracles — last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner went to a genuine monster movie! Guillermo del Toro’s overachieving Gill Man spectacle features a gratifyingly anti-authoritarian attitude. The emotional love story is as pure as a silent movie — and has the sentimental commitment to pull an audience into its dreamy Fairy Tale horror fantasy.

Winner of the Venice Film Festival’s prestigious Golden Lion — not to mention being a hit at Telluride and Tiff — Guillermo del Toro is back in action with The Shape of Water. Starring Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Lauren Lee Smith, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer, his Cold War era love story has now received a red band trailer showing off much more of the creature, as well as romance and menace.

"This creature is intelligent... capable of understanding emotions." Fox Searchlight has revealed the first official trailer for Guillermo del Toro's new film, titled The Shape of Water. This fairy tale romance set in the 1960s at a secret government laboratory stars Sally Hawkins as a lonely, mute woman who discovers a classified "experiment" and falls in love with him. Doug Jones co-stars as the creature, which makes me think you could almost call this a Hellboy prequel about Abe Sapien specifically. It kind of has that vibe. The excellent cast includes Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, Lauren Lee Smith, and John Kapelos. Guillermo del Toro has a habit of becoming involved with a wealth of potentially exciting projects, only for the films to eventually stall out or never get off the ground. Thankfully, del Toro was able to turn his latest film, The Shape of Water, into a reality. With an incredible cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Lauren Lee Smith, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water is described as an “other-worldly story” set against the backdrop of the Cold War.
Just as he did with the criminally underseen Crimson Peak, del Toro is quick to point out that The Shape of Water is not a horror film, although like Crimson Peak and most del Toro films, it will likely have horror elements. Plot details have been kept vague, but Shape of Water co-star and frequent del Toro collaborator Doug Jones let slip some...

Fox Searchlight Pictures hasn’t released the trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” online just yet, but IndieWire caught the two-and-a-half minute teaser on the big screen on Friday, and can confirm that the “fairy tale” starring Doug Jones as a man-fish looks as magical and otherworldly as anything del Toro has ever made.

Set in Cold War–era America circa 1963, the film stars Sally Hawkins as “Elisa,” a mute cleaning lady in a government lab who develops a kinship with Jones’ amphibious-looking creature (who bears a striking resemblance to Abe Sapien from the “Hellboy” series). The entire film seems to be cast in the gorgeous blue-green hue that can be seen on the movie’s teaser poster.

The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro’s long-brewing Cold War fantasy flick, now has a release date to call its own: December 8th, 2017.
That places it smack bang in the middle of Hollywood’s annual awards season, and though it’s far too soon to gauge the movie’s Oscar credentials, an early December release stands as an exciting vote of confidence from Fox Searchlight. Pitched as an “otherworldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963,” The Shape of Water has quietly assembled an all-star cast over the past few months, one which includes Sally Hawkins, Midnight Special‘s Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Lauren Lee Smith, Michael Stuhlbarg, Hidden Figures star Octavia Spencer and Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth), a frequent del Toro collaborator who is said to be on board as the inexplicable “aquatic man.”

The most populous city in Canada has appeared on-screen in many different ways over the years.Enemy (2013)
There are many ways in which cities are portrayed in cinema. Sometimes cities are anonymous and nameless, and sometimes cities become characters in the films they are portrayed in. Cities can be merely incidental settings, or the specific locations within a city can be incredibly important both narratively and visually.
