Carlos Saldanha, director of “Ice Age,” “Ice Age: The Meltdown” and “Rio,” is set to direct his first live-action feature, “100 Days,” for ambitious new Brazilian shingle Ventre Studio and Buena Vista Intl.-Disney.
Created as a theatrical feature, “100 Days,” an adventure drama for family audiences, is inspired by the extraordinary but true story of Brazilian Amyr Klink, who in 1984 at the age of 29, became the first person to cross the South Atlantic in a rowing boat, after many had died in the attempt.
Ventre Studio’s Paula Cosenza will unveil the project at the Cannes Film Market, courting international production partners.
Based on Klink’s bestseller “One Hundred Days Between Sea and Sky,” “100 Days” details his methodical preparations, including his specially designed boat and food stores.

The team behind the Netflix series Narcos has developed a new crime thriller series that is coming out called The Mechanism and today we have the first trailer to share with you. The series was inspired by real events that took place in Brazil and this is the synopsis that came along with the trailer:
Get ready to join a small group of dogged investigators on the hunt to discover the inner workings of the biggest corruption scheme of all time and the impact their pursuit will have on everyone involved - including themselves.
The Mechanism looks like an interesting and intense show that I'll definitely be checking out. It comes from José Padilha (Narcos, Elite Squad 1 & 2, RoboCop) and Elena Soarez (Filhos do Carnaval, Eu Tu Eles, Casa de Areia).

Eliza Hittman (was love at first sight for her directorial debut It Felt Like Love) and Yung Chang (a docu-helmer best known for the award-winning portrait of modern China in Up the Yangtze) are just two of the dozen folks/projects invited to the upcoming Sundance Institute 2015 January Screenwriters Lab. The labs work as a testing ground of sorts, with Lab Director Ilyse McKimmie seeing to it that the screenwriters are mentored by filmmaking professionals. I’d wager that a good portion of these projects on paper eventually make it onto the big screen (say about 65 to 70 percent) and about 35-40 percent break into the actual Sundance Film Fest. Not unlike her debut picture, Hittman’s potential sophomore pic Beach Rats features NYC borough backdrop and via a teenage vantage point but is sure to stir the pot with tad bit more destruction. After Up the Yangtze, China Heavyweight, and The Fruit Hunters,...

I love the Sundance Film Festival. The winners of the fest normally have long legs enough to last all the way until the Oscars. This year, for example, "Pariah" was one of the breakout hits from Sundance, and the Dee Rees coming-of-age flick is being distributed by Focus this month. Its star, Adepero Oduye, recently received the Best Female Lead nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards.
So now, Sundance has unveiled its in-competition slate for 2012 and the films, as always, are quite intriguing. The fest runs from Jan. 19th to the 29th in Park City, Utah. Check out the full list below:

Robert Redford, Founder and President of Sundance Institute remarked, “We are, and always have been, a festival about the filmmakers. So what are they doing? What are they saying? They are making statements about the changing world we are living in. Some are straight-forward, some novel and some offbeat but always interesting. One can never predict. We know only at the end, and I love that.”
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In these challenging economic times, filmmakers have had to be more resourceful and truly independent in their approaches to filmmaking.

The Sundance Film Festival is the largest independent cinema festival in the United States. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, the festival is a showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The Festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators from outside the Hollywood system to a media extravaganza for Hollywood celebrity actors, paparazzi, and luxury lounges set up by companies that are not affiliated with Sundance.
Now the festival is getting ready for the 2012 edition and today they announced the films competing in all categories.

Snow is falling, the temperature is dropping, movies are getting better. Some might say it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas but I say it's beginning to look a lot like Sundance. The 2012 Sundance Film Festival announced its first batch of films Wednesday, all of which are in competition. Meaning these are the films eligible for awards. It also means that, as of right now, these are the films you probably haven't heard of. But, at this time last year [1], the competition films included a ton that you've surely now heard of such as Another Earth, Circumstance, Like Crazy, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Pariah, The Guard, Tyrannosaur and Take Shelter. Those were just the narratives. In last year's documentary competition, films like Beats, Rhymes and Life, Being Elmo, How to Die in Oregon, Page One, Knuckle, Project Nim and Senna all played. Basically, while you probably haven't heard of these movies yet,...

It seems like we are only just diving into the awards season, but the 2012 film year is right around the corner. There is no better place to get a tast of what is to come than Park City Utah in late January. We’ll be attending the fest again (read last year’s round-up) and today we have the first competition titles. This is the same group from last year which titles include Martha Marcy May Marlene, Like Crazy, Another Earth, Pariah, Being Elmo, Take Shelter and many more. Are there more great films to be found this year? I have no doubt the line-up below will include break-out titles, so lets get to it.
At first glance, the most notable film is Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer, who last directed Afterschool and is in the Martha Marcy trio. It is easily my most-anticipated from this group, along with Quentin Dupieux‘s Rubber follow-up Wrong.

The Sundance Institute revealed their Us and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary competition titles today for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The question, of course, is which films will break out this year after the 2011 Sundance Film Festival brought titles such as ,i>Martha Marcy May Marlene, Pariah, Like Crazy and Take Shelter to the forefront. I have never attended the Sundance Film Festival, primarily because I have never heard good things about the experience, plus it means I can save my money for my trip to Cannes where I have typically seen the some of the best films Sundance had to offer including Blue Valentine two years ago and Martha Marcy May Marlene this year. Which means it serves as a good way for me to find films to make sure I add to my Cannes 2012 must see list... can you figure out which ones they may be? When it...

The House of Sand
Directed by: Andrucha Waddington
Written by: Elena Soarez
Starring: Fernanda Montenegro, Fernanda Torres
Genre: Drama
Year: 2005
There are not many films today, even within art cinema, where a sense of place takes precedent over the mechanics of plot. In The House of Sand, the shimmering white sands of Maranhão, along Brazil’s Northern coast, are as much of a character as the mother and daughter who reluctantly make them their home.
In 1910, pregnant Áurea, with her husband Vasco leading the way and her mother Dona Maria in toe, arrives in a makeshift town among the dunes to start a new life. Soon, Vasco is killed in a freak accident, leaving the two women to fend for their selves. Miles from civilization, the elements and Áurea’s impending birth strand the two women indefinitely. While Áurea longs to leave the wretched land, her mother is content to stay,...

Today's Sundance Institute announcement on the make-up of this Summer's Directors and Screenwriters Labs offers some insight on the projects we should be seeing in future editions of the festival but also updates us on the progression of some projects we've already got our eyes on -- as is the case with Sean Durkin's upcoming first feature film and Ondi Timoner's (see pic) fictional debut. Almost all projects that were are included in the Director's Lab were a part of the Screenwriter's January Lab earlier this year, so among the newly mentioned projects in the screenwriting portion of the camp we find indie filmmaker starlets Ry Russo-Young (You Wont Miss Me) and Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture - freshly picked up by IFC) are co-writing a project called Nobody Walks with Russo-Young directing the project. Here's the complete press release below -- look for Ioncinema.com to keep tabs on several of these projects.

- #90.City of Men Director: Paulo MorelliScreenplay: Elena SoarezProducers: Andrea Barata Ribeiro, Bel Berlinck, Fernando Meirelles and Morelli Distributor: Miramax Films The Gist: Scripted by Elena Soarez, turning 18 is a highly-charged moment for anyone but when you’ve grown up in the slum of Pool Hall Hill crammed into Rio de Janeiro’s hillside where life is cheap and prospects are minimal, coming of age has its added tribulations. Wallace (Darlan Cunha) and Acerola (Douglas Silva) are inseparable childhood friends and closer than brothers. Fact: Cidade De Deus (City of God) has produced a spin-off television show and of course, this sequel. See It: The explosive original film was an Ioncinema.com top film of the year - I'm not sure about you people, but this is perhaps the most anticipated "sequel" this year. Release Date/Status?: Miramax Films releases this in limited theaters on February 29th. ...

- When Cidade De Deus burst onto the world cinema scene it propelled Fernando Meirelles into filmmaking stardom (he has since worked on The Constant Gardener and will preem Blindness sometime next year) and it spawned a television series (which in turn has birthed a new film).Since January is a month that is generally filled with plenty of holiday films and Oscar bait leftovers, I question whether a Jan.18th slot is the right approach - but looking back to 2003 I realized that the first film was release almost on the exact same day, so regardless of the theater release-strategy that will be in use, I'm still keen on seeing the City of Men (view the trailer here) - its a sequel but not in a normal sequel type of way. Have the characters evolved into bigger thugs or has the violence mellowed down? Back in the game for a second outing,

NEW YORK -- Miramax Films has acquired North American rights to City of Men (Cidade dos Homens), the big-screen sequel to Fernando Meirelles' Academy Award-nominated Brazilian drama City of God. It also picked up U.K., Australian, New Zealand and South African rights to the film. The feature also is an adaptation of the Sundance Channel series of the same name, which continues the story of two young friends who find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war in the rough slums of Rio de Janeiro. Miramax president Daniel Battsek sealed the deal at this month's Toronto International Film Festival after vp acquisitions Peter Lawson brought in the project. The executives based their decision on a five-minute promo reel of the film, which is now being edited. Meirelles, who received an Oscar nomination for best director for God, will produce the new film, with Paulo Morelli helming a screenplay by Elena Soarez. Morelli, Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Bel Berlinck are producing with Meirelles through their 02 Filmes outfit.

Dona Flor has got nothing on Darlene Linhares. Dona may have had two husbands, but one was a ghost. Darlene not only has three, but they're all very much alive and abiding -- more or less peacefully -- in the same house in the backwaters of Brazil.
"Me You Them" once again underscores how mutually beneficial are the production deals Columbia is striking within the Brazilian film industry. As with "Central Station", Sony Pictures Classics might have a specialty venue success story on its hands here if the distributor is willing to make a similar marketing push. For "Me You Them" is just offbeat and exotic enough to represent a refreshing take on human relationships for U.S. audiences.
Start with the fact this is no fluffy sex comedy with three handsome beaus and one knockout woman. While the cast features big names in Brazilian entertainment, only one, Luiz Vasconcelos, can be considered young and handsome. Nor is Regina Case, who plays Darlene, going to be accused of being glamorous.
But she does possess enough earth-mother sensuality to lend credibility to her harem in reverse. Her dazzling smile and surprising physical grace make Darlene into a primal force in the lives of these three men.
And while the film is often funny, its 30-year-old director, Andrucha Waddington, wisely doesn't go looking for laughs. Life is tough in these hardscrabble backlands, so he respects the characters and their environment enough to give viewers a realistic portrait of a precarious existence.
He and writer Elena Soarez reveal their story in a manner more dramatic than comic. Consequently, the viewer is never quite certain how the tension will play out. One almost feels that with a slightly different temperament in even one of the characters, the story would plunge down a completely different path -- perhaps even a tragic one.
Cinematographer Breno Silveira gives the rugged Bahia countryside a forbidding beauty. And Gilberto Gil, a leading figure in Brazilian pop music from the 1960s, supplies a highly likable score.
