The series has delivered a horror masterwork, a seminal shoot-em-up and some auteurist gems ... but how do they rank?
What better way to celebrate the recent Alien Day than to place the eight movies in the long-running space saga into some kind of order of excellence? And also perhaps to ask how so many film-makers have managed to muck up the original film’s formula.
Let’s start at the bottom. The two Alien vs Predator movies from 2004 and 2007 are now remembered largely for their staggering blandness, as if everybody involved had forgotten what made the early films so chilling. Ostensibly B-movies, but lacking the joyful, half-cocked knockabout bombast of a Roger Corman or Ray Kellogg film, they even disappointed fans of the crossover comic books that spawned them. If 20th Century Fox thought it was getting the new Ridley Scott when the studio hired Paul Ws Anderson to direct...

Me neither, but here's a quick refresher for the both of us: Aliens invade Earth and, through a hypnotizing light, immobilize much of the population and begin vacuuming them up for their life energy. Directed by the Brothers Strause (Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem), the film was a commercial success but was almost universally panned by critics, however, a sequel is now upon us,... Read More...

Alien: ConvenantThe eight films that encompass the Alien series—including its succession of sequels, prequels, and spin-offs—make up a widely varying compendium of consistencies and contrasts. The latest entry, Alien: Covenant (2017), is no exception. As the critical reviews of this new installment are now sufficiently mingled with the predictably deviating audience reactions, one thing about the popular franchise remains clear: each title will forever be burdened and bolstered by the films that came before it. Of course, this isn’t all that surprising; sequels are usually judged by their precursors. But with the Alien anthology, it’s not just about the quality of one film as opposed to another, it’s about a deference to the fictional narrative construct (few movie cycles are as preoccupied with a generally coherent narrative thread) and the anticipation derived from an incorporation of familiar themes and visual motifs (there have likewise been...

The genius of the “Alien” franchise — and the temptation to continue it ad infinitum — is that each of its installments has been so markedly different. From the ominously sparse thriller that first introduced the world to the Xenomorphs, to the steroidal orgy of muscles and machine guns and alien mucus that James Cameron fashioned out of its sequel, to the fascinatingly garbled industrial sludge of “Alien 3,” and so on… this series has proven to be as endlessly adaptable as the extraterrestrial monster that inspired its title.
So, when people complain that “Alien: Covenant” isn’t an “Alien” movie, it’s hard to know what they mean. Apart from strong women, two-mouthed nightmares, and the dark promise of outer space, there isn’t much that runs through this series and ties it together as a stylistically coherent whole. On the contrary, the saga is defined by its flair for change,...

The new Skyline film, Beyond Skyline, has signed up the stars of The Raid, plus The Purge: Anarchy's Frank Grillo...
Made for a modest $20m or so, 2010's Skyline ended up looking more impressive that the far more expensive Battle: L.A. in that year's face off between two alien invasion movies. A solid hit, there had been talk of a sequel to Skyline for some time, but as it turns out, we're getting a spin-off instead.
Entitled Beyond Skyline, the new film is to be written and directed by Liam O'Donnell. Colin and Greg Strause, the special effects wizards who helmed the first movie, are on board to produce.
And Beyond Skyline has now made some interesting casting signings. Namely, Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, the two stars of The Raid. Furthermore, the pair will not only star in the movie, but they will also be choreographing the fights in it as well.

I was not a fan of Skyline, a 2010 alien invasion flick from The Brothers Strause (Alien vs. Predator: Requiem) which failed to add much of anything to its genre. Though trailers, which showed people getting sucked up by eery blue beams of light, were moderately intriguing, the final product was lazy and awfully written (audiences agreed, giving it a D- CinemaScore rating). Regardless, the flick grossed $70 million worldwide against a budget of $10 million, more than enough to justify a sequel. And now, with the announcement of the newly-named Beyond Skyline, we’ll be getting one.
An official Facebook page launched on May 19th served as our first notice that a sequel was actively in the works. According to that page, Liam O’Donnell, who both wrote and produced the first film, will be directing and penning the script for Beyond Skyline. The film will serve as O’Donnell’s directorial...

In 2010, directors Colin and Greg Strause had a great idea, make a low-budget, effects-heavy sci-fi film and then just watch as the money rolls in. That film was "Skyline." Unfortunately, the movie underperformed, grossing only $21 million domestically on a budget of $10 million. But thanks to international box office, it earned a total of $67 million worldwide. Now comes word that a sequel is in the works. It's called "Beyond Skyline" and will be directed by Liam O'Donnell, the writer of the first film. Story details are unknown, but it picks up after the original, in which the main characters were taken aboard an alien ship and one of them was turned into a monster. Check out the poster for the sequel below. Poster: (click to enlarge)...

The Cannes Film Festival is best known for debuting daring new cinema, like Ryan Gosling's directorial debut Lost River or the Nicole Kidman vehicle Grace of Monaco. Meanwhile, the Cannes Film Market is a hotbed of distribution deals both foreign and domestic. There, amid titles like Kidnap and Skiptrace, the rumored Skyline sequel is gaining momentum. Dark Horizons has learned that a sequel to the 2010 low-budget sci-fi thriller Skyline is being sold overseas. Called Beyond Skyline, this film will presumably continue the alien invasion premise of the first film, but this time without The Brothers Strause at the helm. Instead, Skyline producer and co-writer Liam O'Donnell has been brought on board, marking his directorial debut. No details on the plot have yet been released. But the above sales poster has been shared on Facebook. Greg and Colin Strause are special effects artists who crafted a career in visual effects...

Currently in pre-production and slated for production in early 2014, Abattoir centers on a Boston real-estate reporter who unearths an urban legend about someone who has spent decades buying homes where horrific tragedies have occurred and piecing them together, ultimately leading to the enigmatic Jebediah Crone and the answer to the terrifying question: How do you build a haunted house?
The producing team is comprised of Radical Studios president Barry Levine (Oblivion), Hydraulx CEO Greg Strause (Skyline), Brent Bell...

Well. This is a bit on the strange side given the lack of any fanfare or news. If the following report from The Georgetown Times is to be believed, we may just be seeing Barry Levinson's tale of things gone horribly awry in a small town, The Bay, this October.
According to The Times the ecological horror movie that involved a large cast of people from Georgetown County will be released in October. This is according to the S.C. Film Commission, who heard from the producers of The Bay that the film would be released later this year.
The movie, first called Isopod, has no trailer and no movie poster. There is still no exact day that the movie will be released.
The film, which cost about $2 million to produce, was directed by Oscar-winning producer Barry Levinson. It is one in a series of horror films that includes Insidious and Paranormal Activity.

Hollywood loves a good franchise, especially now a days. But over the last few years, where seemingly everything is getting a sequel, whether it’s theatrical or direct-to-video, there’s still some films, for which sequels were being considered, fans can probably say they’ll never going to happen.
Obviously, films like Scream 4 and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull, prove we should never say never, and the confirmation of a Jurassic Park 4 (here) recently just proved that theory. Killer Film is quite sure that these 20 genre sequels will never happen.
AvP 3
The Brothers Strause had such a horrible time on AvP: Requiem, they told me they personally would never come back (here), but the film ended with a cliffhanger and it made money. But with Prometheus resurrecting the Alien franchise and Predators doing just that for that franchise, an AvP 3 seems incredibly unlikely.

The Brothers Strause (Skyline, AvP: Requiem) are teaming up with Predators producer John Davis to adapt The Uglies, based off of author Scott Westerfeld’s trilogy. Uglies is set in an Orwellian future in which teens undergo surgery on their 16th birthdays to become supermodel “pretty.” It’s centered on Tally Youngblood, an “ugly” teen forced by authorities to forgo her transformation until she infiltrates The Smoke, a community of rebels who choose to retain their appearance and live outside of normal society.
The film is being written by Jacob Forman (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane). No word on a release date or cast.

Will Rupert Murdoch go down for Nine Months or escape on Titanic? We launch our own inquiry into Fox-backed films
Hugh Grant has declared that he had no idea that Nine Months, the dopey pregromcom he made in 1995 with Julianne Moore, was a Fox movie – that is to say, one for which Rupert Murdoch was ultimately responsible. He says that if he knew then what he knows now, he never would have accepted the role.
Murdoch bought Fox in 1985 – he had to become a Us citizen to do so. But if there was a searching internal inquiry into quality at Fox – similar to the searching internal inquiry into ethics avowedly taking place at News International – how would the arguments stack up? What movies made or distributed by Mr Murdoch would be adduced in evidence? As the defendant sits impassively in the dock, perhaps behind bullet-proof glass, here are the opposing...

The production of Hollywood movies and the way in which they are commissioned is so brazenly exploitative they would make a pimp blush. Even a respected old hand like Barry Levinson (Rain Man) is not immune from such realities as his new film, a eco-horror thriller The Bay, demonstrates. A combination of the “found footage” type of cinema that is extremely cheap to make and particularly suited to suspenseful/horror type genre pieces, as well as the sort of ecological based threat that sees the dying planet we live on used as a basis for more fantastical manifestations.

Formerly known as Isopod, it has been announced today that director Barry Levinson‘s found footage eco-horror film The Bay will be released by Lionsgate. The film “chronicles an unprecedented biological disaster unleashed from the waters of the Chesapeake Bay- an isopod parasite, carrying a horrific untreatable disease, that jumps from fish to human hosts. The true horror and scope of the event unfolds on footage captured on home videos and the internet by the town’s victims.” I love much of Levinson’s previous work, most notably his directorial debut Diner. But he has been responsible for more classics such as Rain Man, Sleepers, and Wag the Dog. The Bay will see him returning to his horror roots found in Sphere.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson has just found a distributor for his first horror film [1], a found footage tale of what happens when a deadly disease moves from the sea onto the land, called The Bay. Lionsgate has acquired the rights to the film, which was produced by the team behind Paranormal Activity and Insidious: Jason Blum, Steven Schneider and Oren Peli. Read the official press release and more after the break. One of the most intriguing aspects of The Bay is that we finally get a found footage movie from an experienced filmmaker. An Oscar-winner at that. The biggest successes in the genre - The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity, just to name a few - all came from relatively inexperienced directors at the time, so it's going to be interesting to see if Levinson's decades of experience in almost every genre - from sports, to dramas,...

Skyline (Blu-Ray)Universal Home ENTERTAINMENT2010/Rated PG-13/Running Time 94 minsList Price: $39.98 – Now AvailableDid anyone really see Avp-R aka Alien vs. Predator: Requiem? I did, in the theaters actually and while I can't say it ranks high up there with any of the films from either monster film franchise, the sequel turned out to be better than I expected. And I wasn't expecting much. Though the film had a ridiculous plot, some terrible performances by a cast being chased by guys in rubber suits and cinematography so bad you couldn't see crap, I'm still amazed that I found Avp-R somewhat enjoyable. Stupid, but stupid fun. Maybe it was because it had some heavy Alien on Predator action or should I say Aliens vs. Predator, since it involved one lone hunter essentially playing a badass against an army of those xenomorphs with acid for bloodAVP-r was a box-office failure,...

While the Strause Brothers' sci-fi invasion film Skyline was a movie best enjoyed while not sober, their new directorial effort War Of The Ages ironically sounds like something you'd come up with while high as f*ck. Skyline's Greg and Colin Strause are moving ahead with their next film and they are leaping in trailer first. The film will be directed by Greg and is called War of the Ages.
Here's a description of the film from Greg Strause:
"...an ancient artifact is uncovered, time is shattered and the seven greatest war leaders in history have to battle each other out. It's sort of like The Lord of the Rings meets Gladiator. You have Napoleon vs. Julius Caesar vs. Attila the Hun vs. Genghis Khan vs. Alexander vs. Hannibal. So, there you go. It's going to be in 3D and it's a big sword-and-sandal epic."
I have yet to see Skyline, but may end up checking it out for a buck on Redbox. I have heard nothing but terrible things. While War of the Ages sounds cool I am keeping my opinion at bay for now.

"Skyline" filmmakers Colin and Greg Strause say their next project, "War of the Ages", is going to be a mash-up of fights between history's greatest warriors.
The duo tells Movieweb that the story is about the uncovering of an ancient artifact which causes time to shatter.

The Film:
There’s this ridiculousness to Skyline at times, that some, well, maybe many won’t get. But we start on the basis of an alien invasion, so until CNN or Stephen Hawking proves that this stuff can or will happen, let’s not scoff at the film’s ridiculousness just yet. Skyline is perfectly fine for what it is: a brainless, sci-fi, campy movie, that sometimes feels like a CG love letter to the stuff Roger Corman once produced in the 1970s. Ham-fisted heroes. Corny dialogue. Cool monsters. It’s a modern day low budget ode to the drive-in low budget movies. So again, some, if not most, will absolutely hate Skyline, while a few others will love its campy charm.
The Brothers Strause, mostly known for their visual effects work and AvP: Requiem deliver on what they know best, which is a solid, entertaining action movie with spaceships and cool looking aliens.

Born out of their frustration with working on 20th Century Fox’s Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, the Brothers Strause grabbed a camera (well, it was the Red), their FX house – Hydraulx (who’s created some of the better CG FX around in Avatar, Iron Man 2, and Battle: Los Angeles), and their life savings to create one of the first indie blockbusters. Killer Film recently caught up with the directors for a talk about Skyline: the production, the VFX, and that ending! Check it out!

I recently caught up with The Brothers Strause for an upcoming interview that you’ll read very soon and I asked them about the chances that Liam was right when he said we will see a Skyline 2 and the plausibility of it.
Jon: Josh and Liam [the screenwriters] claim that no matter what, a Skyline 2 will happen. Is there any truth to this and what’s the plausibility of it?
Greg Strause: We have a 48-page treatment ready for the movie. It’s crazy and epic. Basically, that’s what those two will be getting into in a week or so, since the sequel was negotiated prior to finishing the first film. We know where we want to take the franchise,...
