In body-swap comedies, the acting is its own kind of brazen put-on fun. Adult actors get to channel their inner innocent kid; young actors get to channel their “serious” adult. And that’s why, ever since the original “Freaky Friday” (1976) brought this genre into being, it’s been marked by instances of true Hollywood artistry, like Tom Hanks’ classic performance in “Big” (though that wasn’t technically a swap comedy) or the lyrically funny bedlam that Jennifer Garner brought off in “13 Going on 30,” one of the best movies of its year.
But even that was 20 years ago. In the decades since, dozens — hundreds — of Hollywood comedies have wallowed in a baseline joke of American middle-class behavior, repeating it again and again like a sacred trope. Today, the movies teach us, adults already are overgrown children: creatures of impulse and appetite and development arrested by their immersion in pop culture.

Family Switch Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Emma Myers, Brady Noon, Rita Moreno
Director: McG
Family Switch Movie Review ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: While lacking in notable quality, the film manages to maintain an innocuous charm, making it a passable option for holiday viewing. Some moments, like a 13 Going on 30 reference and an authentically Angeleno freeway argument, provide sporadic laughs.
What’s Bad: The script fails to establish distinctive personalities for the characters, resulting in a lack of emotional depth. Predictable humor, one-dimensional supporting characters, and an aversion to conflict contribute to a forgettable viewing experience.
Loo Break: ‘Family Switch’ is a film characterized by persistent niceness and a lack of substantial conflict, making it suitable for background entertainment. A convenient loo break can be taken during the family’s visit to the local planetarium, where they argue and miss the opportunity to embrace...

Plot: Jess and Bill Walker are doing their best to keep their family connected as their children grow older, more independent, and more distant. Review: In the sub-genre of body swap movies, very few films stand out as quality films. The concept itself is ridiculous and silly and tends to aim more toward family-friendly fare like Freaky Friday and 13 Going On 30. Still, even those movies benefitted from some personality and edge that helped them earn some originality, a quality sorely lacking in Netflix’s new Christmas-themed comedy Family Switch. Everything you need to know about this movie is showcased in the trailer,...

At this point, the body switch comedy genre is pretty well worn. Big, Freaky Friday (twice), 17 Again, 13 Going on 30, etc., have pretty much defined and exhausted what can be done with the concept to keep it fresh. The latter 2004 hit actually starred Jennifer Garner, who is now returning to the genre again, this time as producer and star of Netflix’s holiday comedy Family Switch.
This time around, the formula is expanded to have an entire family experience a life-altering cosmic moment and become their opposites. The parents become their kids, the kids become their parents, even the baby becomes the French Bulldog. Guess what? It works, even offering some Lol moments along the way in a movie that isn’t trying to reinvent anything here, just finding a new angle to squeeze some more life out of it.

Jennifer Garner’s family comedy Yes Day is on track to be seen by 53 million households in the first four weeks of its release, Garner said on her Instagram feed Friday. The Miguel Arteta-directed movie was released March 12 on the streaming giant and has already been No. 1 in 50 countries where it has debuted, according to Netflix.
If the projection holds, the pic co-starring Edgar Ramirez would be on track to be the streaming giant’s second-biggest Kids & Family release behind this past season’s The Christmas Chronicles: Part 2, which was seen by 61 million subs in its first month. By comparison, its kids title We Can Be Heroes was projected to be seen by 44 million in its first four weeks.
In Netflix’s metric, a view is counted as any sampling of at least two minutes of programming.
Last year, Netflix released its top 10 films list where the action thriller Extraction was No.

The “Toy Story” universe has always been very male, ever since John Lasseter’s first “Pixar” release in 1995 introduced old-school Western sheriff pull-toy Woody (Tom Hanks) and snazzy electronic flyer Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). Hollywood is rarely in search of the new, so each year brings a longer list of adapted screenplays and a shorter list of originals.
Sundance launched American indie-in-Paris Whit Stillman’s witty adaptation of an early epistolary Jane Austen novella, “Love & Friendship,” which boasted rave reviews for Kate Beckinsale as a bitchy gold-digging mom, and long legs at the arthouse box office ($14 million).
Veteran indie distributor James Schamus returned to his first love, screenwriting, for his well-reviewed directorial debut “Indignation,” adapting the Philip Roth novel about college love, which performed modestly at domestic arthouses ($3.3 million). Lesser-known “Indignation” fared better with Roth than rookie director-star Ewan McGregor and writer John Romano’s film version of the better-known novel “American Pastoral.”
Writer-director Rebecca Miller’s sixth feature, sophisticated New York comedy of manners “Maggie’s Plan,” earned strong kudos at Toronto and Sundance but scored modestly on the specialty circuit ($3.5 million). Woody Allen aside,...

“Finding Dory” marks yet another mid-life crisis movie at Pixar —a trend that’s sure to continue. For Andrew Stanton, though, the fear of being alone for Ellen DeGeneres’ forgetful blue tang became more relatable when he realized mid-way through production: “My kids are gone and who am I?”
“It was interesting to realize that I was talking about middle age and accepting who you are and going with it….It all kinda comes out eventually after four years on a film,” Stanton conceded.
But the “Finding Nemo” sequel, 13 years later, was daunting, like a second season of TV, where it’s a different path and you’re working from the outside in.
Stanton said he’s never had such a hard time cracking a character’s way of expressing itself.

Even though some folks bemoan when Pixar goes the sequel route, they still turn up in droves, and that will certainly be the case for this sequel to Finding Nemo, one of the studio’s most beloved titles. This one, Finding Dory, opens this week and is a pretty cute new adventure for the heroes from the first one. It’s basically a slam dunk for the studio, so this is going to be a huge success no matter the quality, but it helps that this is an easy to recommend cartoon. Something tells me that Disney will again be able to print money from this Pixar outing. The film is, once again, a sequel to Finding Nemo, continuing a trend with Pixar of making follow ups to some of their most popular properties. Here, we’re following Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), the forgetful Blue Tang who now is searching for her parents (Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy), as she’s remembered her childhood. Along for the ride is Marlon (Albert Brooks), who obviously owes her from last time, and Nemo as well. This search will take them to a Marine Life Institute where Dory thinks her parents are. There she’ll meet a ton of friends, old and new, including octopus Hank (Ed O’Neill). Andrew Stanton is once again at the helm here, co-directing with Angus MacLane and co-writing with the duo of Bob Peterson and Victoria Strouse. The voice cast, in addition to those mentioned, includes Ty Burrell, Idris Elba, Bill Hader, Kate McKinnon, Kaitlin Olson, Hayden Rolence, Dominic West, and a cameo of sorts by Sigourney Weaver. Music is by Thomas Newman. Though this isn’t as good as the first one (probably an impossible bar to clear), there’s definitely plenty of fun to be had here. Personally, I really loved Hank, which is a combination of O’Neill doing strong voice work and the animators at Pixar really outdoing themselves with the creation of the octopus. Watching him is delightful, as is the whole thing really, once the first act is through. It takes a while for things to get going here, but as the second half begins, the movie is firing on all cylinders. It’s not top tier Pixar, but it’s still an easy to recommend family film. Awards wise, this is probably going to be a very targeted campaign on the part of Pixar and Disney. Sure, with money to burn they’ll throw out a [...]...

Disney just announced a bunch of updates to its movie release calendar, but they’re all untitled movies, so that leaves us to play the guessing game of which movies have been moved to which dates. Happy March, dear readers! The Oscars are behind us now, and Disney’s Zootopia comes out this Friday. Speaking of which, this week’s Trailer Trashin’ takes a look at the second trailer for Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory.
Premise: Six months after the events of Finding Nemo, Dory (voice of Ellen DeGeneres) suddenly recalls her childhood memories. Remembering something about “the jewel of Monterey, California,” she sets out to find her family, accompanied by Nemo (voice of Hayden Rolence) and Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks). She arrives at the Monterey Marine Life Institute, where she meets Bailey the beluga whale (voice of Ty Burrell), Destiny the whale shark (voice of Kaitlin Olson), and Hank the octopus (voice of Ed O’Neill), who becomes her guide.
My take: Like most living human beings, I love Pixar movies. And after two original films last year, the next offering from the good...

In what may be one of Disney's best-matched castings to date, Reese Witherspoon is to play Tinker Bell in a new film.
Tink, which will focus on the story of Peter Pan's fairy companion, is the latest classic from the animation studio to be given the live-action treatment.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon will also produce the feature alongside Bruna Papandrea, her partner at production banner Pacific Standard.
Finding Dory writer Victoria Strouse is currently penning the script, but as yet there is no director attached to the project.
The movie is thought to be following in the footsteps of Disney's Sleeping Beauty spin-off Maleficent in that it will portray the untold story of the lead character.
The studio is currently producing a live-action Beauty and the Beast (starring Emma Watson) and is also developing similar adaptations of classics Dumbo, Pinocchio and Winnie the Pooh.

Disney won’t stop until all of their animated movies are made into live-action adaptations, this is just a fact. Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Mulan, Winnie the Pooh, Pinnocchio, and Jack and the Beanstalk have all either been remade or are in development.
Now Tink is getting her shot and THR reports that Reese Witherspoon will produce and star in the film, setting Victoria Strouse—co-writer of Pixar’s upcoming Finding Dory—to pen the script. Tinkerbell is said to “play with the idea and timeline of the well-known Peter Pan narrative,” and will take the angle of telling “the story you don’t know”.
It’s all becoming blurry to me what movies are happening and when, but color me curious about this one.

Disney's live-action trend continues with the announcement of its newest take on a classic character: Reese Witherspoon is set to play Tinker Bell in an origin story flick.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the Oscar-winning actress has been tapped to headline "Tink," which will delve into the backstory of the "Peter Pan" character. Though there are no plot details yet, THR says that the movie "will play with the idea and the timeline of the well-known Peter Pan narrative." And like 2014 hit "Maleficent," "Tink" aims to tell "'the story you don't know,' and will offer a new perspective on the character," per THR.
Witherspoon certainly has the petite, pixie-ish looks to pull of the character, and she's been splitting her time pretty evenly these days between comedy and drama projects. Depending on which director she takes Tinker Bell, the flick could wind up being some combination of those two genres.

Tink is to star and be produced by Reese Witherspoon, with Finding Dory's co-writer penning the script.
In the past year or two, a succession of projects have been revealed by Disney, that aim to turn some of its animated classics into live action features. Tink, a movie outing for the character Tinkerbell, actually predates that trend, with this particular project having been in development since 2010.
Back then, Elizabeth Banks was attached to play the lead role, but it seemed that Tink gradually fizzled out. Until now at least.
For whilst Elizabeth Banks no longer seems to be involved, Reese Witherspoon very much is. She's signed on to star in and produce Tink, which is also getting a new screenplay from Victoria Strouse. Strouse has co-written the upcoming Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory.
The pitch here is that we're getting the Tinkerbell story we apparently didn't know, and it's...

Reese Witherspoon is attached to tell a live-action version of Tinker Bell's story, The Hollywood Reporter writes. The project is in development, but, yes, in one of the more solid cartoon-to-live-action casting moves in recent memory, Witherspoon would play the titular fairy. Like the Peter Pan movie hitting theaters soon, this one also has a fun, one-word name: Tink. Finding Dory screenwriter Victoria Strouse is penning the screenplay, which will reportedly tell us the story we don't know (think Angelina Jolie's Maleficent). Drama. Most other details are under wraps for now, but Witherspoon is set to produce the film with Bruna Papandrea.
