There have been many classic movie comedies over the years featuring Black stars, ranging from Eddie Murphy's Coming to America to Whoopi Goldberg's Sister Act. Those films are among the many that resonated with Black audiences even though they were directed by white filmmakers. Despite that, Hollywood has also had a long tradition of Black directors creating movies aimed specifically at Black audiences; trailblazer Oscar Micheaux, in fact, is regarded as the first major Black filmmaker, directing and producing more than 40 so-called "race films" between 1919 and 1948.
These days, as Hollywood executives increasingly come to realize the importance of Black directors telling Black stories, there's been an ever-growing number of Black directors engaging in big-screen filmmaking, a trend that has been evident not just in dramas but in comedies as well. In fact, some of the most beloved comedies with predominantly Black casts featured Black directors at the helm. For the full picture,...

Hey there, everyone! I sincerely hope this finds you all well (or at least coping) and eager (or at least willing) to take on a new year. I love doing year-end lists. For me, it’s a time of reflection, as well as expansion. Since I started with Daily Dead in April of 2015, my horror-view continues to grow; I’ve been so fortunate to meet and speak with some enduring legends of the genre, not to mention strike many new friendships through social media. But what my continuing immersion in this greatest of cultures has provided above all else is an appreciation for the variety and depth horror has to offer. It really has been a great year; unfortunately, I’ve missed some goodies, but dammit, I tried. So, without anymore ado whatsoever, here are a few (okay, a lot) of my favorite things from 2016.

In 1986, Spike Lee released his feature-length debut film “She’s Gotta Have It” about sexually independent Brooklynite Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns) who juggles three suitors: Jamie Overstreet (Tommy Redmond Hicks), Greer Childs (John Canada Terrell) and Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee). The film garnered much critical acclaim upon release and was credited with ushering in the American independent film movement in the 1980s. Now, Deadline reports that the film is being adapted into an episodic TV series for Netflix after being in development at Showtime for two years. Lee will direct all the episodes and will executive produce with his wife Tonya Lewis Lee.

Crime is hard. There's the planning, the execution, the follow-through. It's not a life for everyone. And it's especially not a life for these individuals, who blundered through 2015 with an assortment of criminal errors ranging from absent-minded to shamefully stupid.
