Man, Bruno Mattei sure loved making movies. It’s there in every frame he ever shot; his passion for film is responsible for countless classics like…okay classics is such a loaded and pliable word depending on one’s outlook. But he sure made enthusiastic films, eager to please; and most importantly he made movies that he thought audiences would want to see based on what they already loved. Case in point: Robowar (1988), a Predator “homage” mixed with a dash or two of Robocop that ends up being uniquely Italian. And if you think anyone other than Severin Films would gift you a Bruno Blu you need a timeout in the boiling jungles of the Philippines.
Where does one even start? Mattei and his frequent cohort Claudio Fragasso headed to the Philippines to make two films, both from Drudi’s scripts: this one, and After Death (aka Zombie 4) which Fragasso helmed.

A year before their jaw-dropper Shocking Dark, director Bruno Mattei (Violence in a Women's Prison) and co-writers Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi (Zombie 4) first collaborated on the brain-melting mash-up of Predator, Robocop and a Philippines war movie that is... Robowar!
When a team of badass commandos is hired for a jungle rescue mission, they'll instead find themselves hunted by a kill-crazed creature that is part man, part machine and all glorious '80s ItaloSleaze.

I’ve been in love with the work of Italian horror legend Lucio Fulci since the age of ten, when I saw his undead classic Zombie (1979); from the smiling undead VHS box art to the creeping, gory grey dread contained within, I was hooked. That was the movie easy to find at the boom of the video era, as it was a big hit and everyone stocked it; but further success eluded his work on North American shores, and the horror buff had to scrounge and scour to find his releases. (Except for The Gates of Hell; that one did make it over.) Nearly ten years after his biggest hit, he was set to make a triumphant return to gut munching glory. The result? Zombi 3 (1988), a wonderfully batshit half a Fulci lovingly restored by the demented folks at Severin Films, who continue to drag the underseen into the light for seasoned collectors and neophytes alike.

Number four in 88 Films Italian Collection, Blastfighter is one of those movies that, at least amongst cult movie fans, has gained legendary status, even for those that have never so much as seen the film! This is the type of action flick that fans of the genre hail as the pinnacle of insane, over the top, no-holds-barred Rambo/Deliverance knock-offs – for that is obviously where this film takes its inspiration. But this is backwoods-style vigilante justice with an Italian twist of course! Which is undoubtedly why the film has gained such a cult status.
Directed by Lamberto Bava, son of Giallo master Mario Bava and the man behind the 80s cult classic Demons,...

Blue Underground presents 1990: The Bronx Warriors via a Blu-Ray/DVD Combo set on June 30, 2015 and we got our review for you, right here.
The Movie
1990: The Bronx Warriors is an Italian mash-up of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York and Walter Hill’s The Warriors, as probably evident from the title (Escape from New York was called 1997: Escape from New York in Italy). The Bronx is labelled as “No Man’s Land”, where law & order is vacant and the borough is run by gangs that have their own territories – much like the gangs in The Warriors. Our main gang is “The Riders” which is a motorcycle club (that features real Hell’s Angels) lead by Trash (played by Mark Gregory) who believe that a war is about to begin with other gangs. What they don’t know is the Manhattan Corporation is planting a man...

I have been a Blue Underground fanboy for quite a while now, as I have quite an impressive collection of their Blu-ray releases. This will be the first Blue Underground title that I have reviewed for the site, and what a title to start with. Blue Underground’s Blood Soaked Double Feature, is two Bruno Mattei films on Blu-ray for the price of one, and it’s quite an interesting pairing, I must say. The set consists of Hell of the Living Dead, following by Rats: Night of Terror. I have seen Hell of the Living Dead several times, but this marks the first time that I’ve seen Rats. If you want to follow the format given to us, you would watch Hell of the Living Dead first, but the truth of the matter is, these two films compliment each other so well that you could reverse it and...

We recently told Daily Dead readers that Blue Underground has been working on a Blu-ray version of Hell of the Living Dead. Packaged together with Rats: Night of Terror in a Blu-ray 2-pack, we now have the official release date and list of bonus features:
Hell Of The Living Dead: “When The Creeping Dead Devour The Living Flesh! An accident at a chemical plant unleashes a horrific virus, and an elite Swat team is sent to New Guinea to investigate. But when they arrive on the hellish island, they discover a plague of flesh-eating zombies as well as a beautiful female reporter who practices nude anthropology. Can the commandos survive this cannibal rampage, uncover a shocking government secret, and still find time for the occasional cross-dressing before the ravenous hordes of the living dead infect the entire world?

Blue Underground is putting out a double feature Blu-Ray presentation of some hilariously bad Italian horror films. Rats: Night of Terror and Bruno Mattei’s Hell of the Living Dead are gems for drinking party fodder. While some may be complaining that these films are hitting Blu-Ray when other films that are “more deserved” are still waiting in the high definition wings, I welcome this schlock into the realm. Blue Underground originally announced Hell of the Living Dead last September on their Facebook page so it isn’t too much of a surprise (except for the fact that it has taken almost a year to come out).
