XYZ Films has acquired U.S. rights to the classic Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title “The World is Yours” directed by Romain Gavras from StudioCanal and to the TIFF hit film “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” directed by Simon Hawkins and Zeke Hawkins. The hyper-stylized films are the first titles in a new XYZ initiative to introduce audiences to classic festival hits that cater to cinema fans.
“The World is Yours” premiered at Cannes in 2018 and stars Karim Leklou, Isabelle Adjani, Vincent Cassel and Oulaya Amamra and was co-written by Gavras, Karim Boukercha and Noe Debre. Marilyn Manson has signed a record deal with the metal label Nuclear Blast, and apparently is set to release his first new music since a number of sexual abuse allegations essentially put a halt to his career. The embattled shock rocker teased a one-minute snippet of new song on his social channels.
The snippet was also shared by Nuclear Blast, with a rep confirming to Rolling Stone that the label has indeed inked a deal with Manson. No song title has been revealed but the audio clip features Manson whispering the line, “Keep sleeping/ I’ll make you dream of me.”
In February 2021, Manson’s ex-fiancée Evan Rachel Wood went public with accusations against the rock star, declaring, “He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years.”
A slew of other accusations soon followed by more than a dozen women. Manson has since settled a couple of lawsuits,...

Al Pacino and Dan Stevens have teamed up for exorcism horror film “The Ritual” from director David Midell.
XYZ Films has acquired worldwide rights to the feature, with plans to release it theatrically in 2025 and arrange international distribution at the upcoming Cannes market.
“The Ritual” was written by Midell and Enrico Natale and produced by Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch and Natale. Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen round out the cast.
Based on a true story, “The Ritual” follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.

"This world is not kind to weak people." XYZ Films has revealed the trailer for a Canadian cheerleading film called Backspot, which plays more a serious drama or intense thriller than a sports comedy or satire. This is similar to that rowing film The Novice a few years ago. This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year and hits US theaters in May. Devery Jacobs (from "Reservation Dogs") stars as Riley, who is given the chance to cheer with the all-star squad, Thunderhawks. With a competition looming, Riley must navigate her crippling anxiety, her relationship with her girlfriend, and also her desperate need for approval from her new coach. One positive review states: “You may think you know your sports movie tropes, but you’ve never seen them used quite this way — that is, within a queer cheerleading drama firmly focused on complex female characters — and Waterson’s Backspot delights in skewing such expectations.

HBO’s cancellation of “Westworld” and the subsequent removal of the show from Max is often cited as an example of how hostile the streaming landscape can be for artists. But the show’s co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy aren’t ready to give up on the possibility of finishing it.
In a new interview with The Wrap to promote his new Prime Video series “Fallout,” Nolan explained that he’s still holding out hope that they’ll have a chance to complete their planned story at some point. The showrunner said that he and Joy won’t reveal any details about how the show would have ended because they don’t want to spoil any hypothetical future seasons.

For four seasons stretched across six years, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan infuriated and dazzled lovers of mind-bending sci-fi in equal measure with "Westworld." Some would have you believe the pair's extremely loose small-screen re-imagining of Michael Crichton's 1973 "Westworld" film and its sequels peaked with its first season ... and they'd be right, so far as when it came to telling a twisty, layered story about the nature of consciousness and what it even means to have agency as clearly and cohesively as possible. But as guilty as later seasons were of being needlessly convoluted in order to stay one step ahead of viewers, it's also hard not to (perhaps begrudgingly) admire a show that not only respected its audience but actively goaded them into trying to solve the increasingly baffling puzzle boxes it threw at them ahead of time.

Series co-creator Jonathan Nolan says he “100 percent” wants to finish the story of Westworld, which was cancelled after its fourth season in 2022.
Screenwriter and filmmaker Jonathan Nolan may be moving to other sci-fi pastures with this month’s Fallout, but he still has hopes of finishing what he started with his earlier TV series, Westworld.
Cancelled in 2022, the previously acclaimed series – adapted from the classic Michael Crichton film of the same name – ended on its fourth season, leaving its story unresolved.

If anyone in Hollywood knows The Beatles‘ songs, it’s Evan Rachel Wood. She was in one of the biggest Beatles movies. She named her favorite Beatles song and named some others that might have influenced Radiohead.
Evan Rachel Wood’s favorite Beatles song that was in her movie ‘Across the Universe’
Wood’s first major movie role was as Lucy (get it?) in the Fab Four jukebox musical Across the Universe. One of the most famous musical numbers in the movie is a hallucinogenic staging of “Happiness Is a Warm Gun.” During a 2007 interview with The News-Times, Wood was asked to pick her favorite Beatles songs.
“It’s hard, because it depends on where you are in your life and what day it is, because they really covered everything,” she replied. “So right now, hmm, recently, I would sing ‘Happiness Is a Warm Gun.’ I got into that because of Across the Universe.

Cinema history is full of missed opportunities. For example, a Beatles movie almost featured David Bowie as a character from a Beatles song. Instead, a famous comedian got the role. A member of the film’s cast revealed what she thought about this development.

We don't always talk enough about visual effects when we talk about the components that make up a great film or television series. Quality writing, acting, cinematography, and production design are essential and mutually complementary, of course. But the realm of VFX is equally crucial in the way that it simultaneously informs and is informed by those other disciplines, often constituting the key ingredient that allows a scene or a shot to accomplish its goal -- whether that goal is steeped in authenticity, scariness, wonder, tension, or surrealism.
In that sense, comparing the before and after of shots featuring computer generated imagery (CGI) and effects can be highly instructional. Thanks to the showcase reels released by many VFX studios and behind-the-scenes featurettes, it's possible to get a side-by-side glimpse at what several great TV shows look like prior to the addition of digital effects. The comparisons are sometimes amusing, sometimes revelatory,...

This time last year, Jonathan Majors was a star on the rise.
A graduate of Yale's drama school, Majors had a handful of major credits to his name, including HBO's Lovecraft Country, the blockbuster Rocky spinoff Creed III, and the critically acclaimed indie film The Last Black Man In San Francisco.
It was an impressive resume for a star in his early thirties -- and the best was yet to come (at least from a monetary standpoint).
Majors made headlines when signed on to play Kang the Conqueror in a slate of Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
It was a deal that had the potential to take him from "well off" to "private island wealthy."
But in March of 2023, Majors' life was instantly turned upside down.
Fans were horrified by the downfall of an artist whom many regarded as one of the great actors of our generation.
But many others believed...

“Tatami,” the Iranian drama from co-directors Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir, has been picked up by XYZ Films for North America, where both lip-synched English and original language versions will be released later this year.
The feature, which bowed in Venice 2023 where it won the Brian Award, made history by becoming the first film to be jointly directed by an Iranian and an Israeli filmmaker.
Starring Arienne Mandi, Amir, Jaime Ray Newman and Ash Goldeh, and written by Nattiv — an Oscar winner for his short film “Skin” — and Elham Erfani, “Tatami” is set during the Judo World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia. Midway through the competition, Iranian female judo fighter Leila (Mandi) and her coach Maryam (Amir ) receive an ultimatum from the Islamic Republic ordering Leila to fake an injury and lose, lest she be branded a traitor of the state. With her own and her family’s freedom at stake,...

Marilyn Manson’s penalty for pursuing failed defamation and emotional distress allegations against Westworld actress Evan Rachel Wood and artist Illma Gore has ballooned to nearly half a million dollars.
The hefty legal tab first hit six figures back on Jan. 29, when a Los Angeles judge ordered Manson, whose legal name is Brian Warner, to pay $326,956 for the fees Wood racked up defending against the claims struck last May from Warner’s still-pending lawsuit against the two women. The abrupt cancellation of “Westworld” in late 2022 marked an unceremonious ending for what was once one of HBO’s buzziest series. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s adaptation of Michael Crichton’s sci-fi novel followed the employees and customers of a futuristic theme park that allowed visitors to immerse themselves in the Wild West, taking out their most violent urges on realistic androids built to resemble humans. But while its debut season was a cultural phenomenon, declining viewership and critical reception prompted HBO to part ways with the show after Season 4.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Westwood” star Evan Rachel Wood reflected on the show’s cancellation. She revealed that the most painful part of the process was being left in the dark about how the story would have ultimately ended.

Dave‘s worldwide tour has come to an end: The hip-hop comedy starring Dave Burd will not return for a Season 4 at Fxx, TVLine has learned.
“After some back and forth, there are no current plans for a fourth season of Dave right now,” FX said in a statement, “as Dave Burd has decided to take an extended break to focus on music and other ventures.” But “that does not rule out the possibility of doing something in the future,” the statement added, and Burd will develop “future projects for us through his overall production deal with Fxp.”

The hit HBO show, Westworld, which was based on the Michael Crichton 1973 film of the same name, was a shocking and unfortunate cancellation made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. While Zaslav has notoriously jettisoned projects in the past, Westworld was a television series that was not only up and running in its fourth season but was also a big hit for the premium cable network. The series that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy had created was building to a fifth and final season. In the wake of the cancellation back in 2022, Nolan stated that they had been fighting to conclude the series when he told THR, “We always planned for a fifth and final season. We are still in conversations with the network. We very much hope to make them.”

A judge has ordered that Marilyn Manson must pay Evan Rachel Wood‘s legal fees for her defense against his defamation lawsuit against her — the bulk of which was previously tossed out.
Manson will foot the $326,956 bill for Wood’s defense against the defamation and emotional distress claims that were struck from his lawsuit last year. The order came down from Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Teresa A. Beaudet at a hearing on Monday (January 29th), as reported by Rolling Stone.
The same judge dismissed much of the case last May. Manson’s defamation suit followed the actress’ claims of abuse during the one-time couple’s relationship from 2007 to 2010 — claims that were protected by the First Amendment and California’s anti-slapp law and its protections on individual free speech, according to the judge.
Judge Beaudet did trim off $60k from Wood’s reimbursement claims, stating that some descriptions for billed hours were too “vague.

Evan Rachel Wood Still Doesn’t Know ‘Westworld’ Ending After Cancellation: “It Keeps Me Up at Night”
Evan Rachel Wood knows about as much as fans when it comes to what Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan had up their sleeves for the final season of their hit HBO series — which is to say, she knows nothing at all.
Wood, who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of her New York stage debut as Audrey in the off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, revealed during the sit-down that she had asked the Westworld creators about where the show was headed following the season four finale, “Que Sera Sera.” In it, humanity — and most sentient life — essentially ends after a season that saw the park androids seizing control, flipping the power scales to control humans the way hosts once were.
After a series of moves that saw virtually the entire main cast die, Wood’s character Dolores — the original park’s oldest continuous host and its...

It’s early afternoon on a Friday when Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood pick up the phone, just five days before they are set to debut as the new Seymour and Audrey in off-Broadway’s Little Shop of Horrors.
Both are on their way to the Westside Theatre stage for their first top-to-bottom run-through, taking over the complicated but beloved characters based on Roger Corman’s 1960 horror comedy and deftly adapted for the stage by theater legends Howard Ashman (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken (music).
Now in the fifth year of the U.S. revival of the dark goings-on of a Skid Row flower shop, several notable names have left their mark on the show: Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Corbin Bleu, Constance Wu, Maude Apatow, Tammy Blanchard and Lena Hall. But none quite like this, as an intentional leap together among friends.

Kristen Stewart’s domination of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival continued at the Variety Sundance Cover Party presented by United Airlines, where Stewart was honored for her starring roles in two big festival premieres: “Love Me,” a post-apocalyptic romance film in which she stars opposite Steven Yeun, and “Loves Lies Bleeding,” an A24-backed crime thriller in which she played a reclusive gym manager who falls for a local bodybuilder.
“It’s hard to get here,” Stewart told Variety at the party about returning to Sundance, where she has premiered more than a dozen movies throughout her career. “Not because it’s an established and elite film festival, but because it supports marginalized voices. Voices that aren’t heard anywhere else. It’s a solidifying, communal feeling and it only makes you stronger to go back into a world of a ‘no’ and say, ‘I know that there’s a place for me.

As far as festival blurbs go, the plot description for filmmaking team Sam and Andy Zuchero’s Love Me is one of the more unique entries, causing many Sundance attendees to question what it could possibly mean.
“Long after humanity’s extinction, a buoy and a satellite meet online and fall in love,” reads the official Sundance listing that immediately brings to mind a whole host of questions. So The Hollywood Reporter went as close to the source as possible Thursday night by asking Kristen Stewart, who stars opposite Steven Yeun in the Zuchero’s experimental indie, how she describes it and what it all means.
“The movie jumps the throat of identity. It really jumps down the throat of trying to affix any feeling we have to a word or identifier, a flag, a stake. Every five minutes we can just flip flop, and the overriding echo [is] if we...

A California appeals court has revived a sexual assault lawsuit against Marilyn Manson involving his former assistant Ashley Walters.
On Wednesday (December 13th), California’s Second Appellate District ruled that Walters — Manson’s assistant from 2010 to 2011 — can sue the musician for sexual assault, overturning an earlier decision that stated Walters waited to long to file the initial lawsuit.
A lower court ruled last year that Walters’ case was barred by the statute of limitations, which requires the case to be filed within two years. However, the appeals court ruled that the case was still viable under California’s “Delayed Discovery” rule, which accounts for suppressed memories due to trauma. The judge of the original hearing had previously said there were not “sufficient facts” to invoke the Delayed Discovery rule.
Walters’ lawsuit claims that she was subjected her to “sexual exploitation, manipulation and psychological abuse” by Manson while she worked as his personal assistant.

Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.
