In one of our recent Wtf episodes, we covered the eye-gouging, eastern European-set filthy shenanigans of Eli Roth’s nicely messed up torture porn movie, Hostel. The film helped pave the way for the exploitation horror subgenre to thrive in the early 2000s, and followed a group of American tourists who get a lot more than they bargained for during a trip to the lovely picturesque country of Slovakia. Poor lads. All they wanted was some promiscuous sex with hot European ladies, but they weren’t counting on a shady organization dishing out decapitation and slit throats, as a side dish to the fornication. The movie, according to the tagline, was ‘based upon true events’ and whether or not you believe this claim, it’s nothing if not brutally demented in parts. So, like any other horror movie that manages to whip up a frenzy with critics and fans alike,...

Jason Statham is a franchise unto himself. He tends to more or less play the same growly-voiced butt-kicking macho man over and over with superficial differences, like how his titular super-spy in "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" enjoys a fine wine. Or how his personal driver, Frank Martin, in "The Transporter" films is meticulous about keeping his suits clean and neatly pressed. You always know exactly what to expect from his films and there's a comfort in that. They embody the type of "Action Movies Your Dad Watches" that were the bread and butter of networks like TNT and TBS in the pre-streaming age of cable.

Everyone knows the deal with 1997's "Batman & Robin" by now. We don't need to rehash the abject disappointment that accompanied its release and its legacy of having nearly killed off the Batman franchise — though, that might be fun ... but let's focus, here. In the wake of Joel Schumacher's second and final Batman movie, Warner Bros. was sent scrambling, lurching from one attempt to reboot the Dark Knight to another.
This went on for some years, with multiple projects being considered and developed before being scrapped. One such project, "Batman: DarKnight," would have been the complete opposite to "Batman & Robin," telling a dark tale that would see Dick Grayson used as a test subject in Dr. Jonathan Crane, Aka Scarecrow's twisted experiments. Of course, we all know how the story plays out, with Warners nixing that movie in favor of Christopher Nolan's origin tale "Batman Begins.

Naming a young Black man’s story after a transport stop gives off strong Fruitvale vibes, but Aristotle Torres’ feature debut reaches back further to the hip-hop morality tales of the early ’90s, like Boaz Yakin’s Fresh or Ernest Dickerson’s Juice — the wave that immediately followed John Singleton’s influential Boyz n the Hood. Surprisingly, given Torres’ history of videos for the likes of Ludacris and Nas, the soundtrack is light on rap, using unexpected needle drops like Pavarotti’s version of “La Donna e Mobile” to score scenes of spray-can anarchy on the New York subway.
In all other ways, however, Story Ave is very much a ’hood movie, in the sense that its young protagonist is both constrained and defined by the place where he lives, in this case the Bronx. That person is Kadir (Asante Blackk), a talented young artist tormented by the recent death of his disabled little brother.

There’s a double meaning to the title of writer-director Aristotle Torres’ debut feature, Story Ave, that neatly sums up what this homegrown NYC coming-of-age drama is all about.
On the one hand, it refers to the fictitious Bronx subway station where its main character, a young and troubled graffiti artist named Kadir, has an encounter that will put him on either the right or wrong path for the future. On the other, it underlines the storybook quality of a movie that, although entrenched in certain socioeconomic realities, veers toward fantasy in some unexpected ways.
Torres, adapting with co-writer Bonsu Thompson from a short they made together in 2018, jumps back and forth between the two elements throughout Story Ave, which takes familiar tropes of the urban youth genre (gang violence, domestic troubles, peer pressure, guns and drugs) and, in its most memorable moments, turns them into something slightly magical. The Baltimore production of the Apple TV+ series “Lady in the Lake” was halted on Friday afternoon after the producers decided to “err on the side of caution” after receiving threats of violence.
The Baltimore police department confirmed that a group of locals contacted producers working a shoot on Park Avenue in the downtown area at around 4 p.m. on Friday. The group threatened to return in the evening to shoot somebody if production didn’t cease. Producers were also told to pay a sum of 50,000 to the group before production would be allowed to continue.
Leaders on the series elected to reschedule filming and look for another location after receiving the message, according to the police department.
Representatives for Apple TV+ were not immediately available for comment. It remains unclear if production has resumed since the incident.

Alma Har’el created the series and is also a director and executive producer via her new production company, Zusa. Har’el’s producing partner, Christopher Legget, also executive produces.

Lupita Nyong’o has exited the “Lady in the Lake” series adaptation at Apple from Endeavor Content, Variety has learned exclusively.
The show was first announced in March 2021. “Lady in the Lake” is currently in production and the hunt is now on for a new actress to take over her role. Natalie Portman remains attached to the series as co-lead and executive producer.
This is the second time in the past two years that Nyong’o has dropped out of a prominent TV role. Variety reported in 2020 that she was forced to exit an adaptation of the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie novel “Americanah” at HBO Max due to scheduling issues caused by the pandemic.

Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has been named the best film of 2021 at the Ee British Academy Film Awards, which were presented on Sunday in London by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Campion’s Western drama has been a favorite all awards season, and it is the one major film not to have a significant stumble on the road to the Academy Awards, which will take place in two weeks. Although questions remain about its vulnerability under the Academy’s preferential system of vote counting, the BAFTA win is a strong indicator that it remains the film to beat, even if BAFTA and Oscar voters have only agreed once in the past eight years.
Will Smith won the leading actor award for “King Richard,” with Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”) the only other Oscar nominee in the category. In the leading actress category,...

A tsunami of buzz and Oscar-telling indicators drop on Thursday, with the major guilds announcing award nominations. The Directors Guild of America (DGA), Writers Guild of America (WGA), Producers Guild of America (PGA) and American Cinema Editors (Ace Eddies) all serve as critical barometers for the Academy Awards, especially in the race for best picture.
DGA has averaged four of their five nominees landing in the Oscars’ best director category, including last year with Aaron Sorkin (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) getting bumped for Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”). The first-time directors’ category, with the exception of Jordan Peele for “Get Out” (2017), has gone on to get a nod at the Academy.
The PGA always provides some big blockbusters and Academy flare, which bodes well for either “No Time to Die” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The WGA has a lot of ineligibilities that won’t provide a strong enough indicator for the screenplay categories.

“Tonally, this is comedy, this is action, with really broad stylistic touches and all this amazing music,” explains Oscar-nominated editor Tom Eagles (“Jojo Rabbit”) about striking the right balance between levity and tragedy in Jeymes Samuel‘s Netflix neo-Western “The Harder They Fall.” “At the end of the day, it’s quite a heartfelt and serious film in which we work our way towards by the end of the movie, so the ending was really important to us. We had to work our way backwards from that and the big reveal at the end and do that in a way that was satisfying but not predictable for the audience, but made sense.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers and horror (“Get Out”). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2022 Oscars predictions for Best Original Screenplay)
Regardless of the type of film, a nominee needs broad academy support to win this race. Indeed, all 12 of the most recent Best Original Screenplay winners were, at the least, Best Picture nominees. And six of them won the big prize, bringing the total number of Best Picture champs with Oscar-winning original screenplays to 18. By comparison, 41 films have done this on the adapted side.
In 2021, all five nominees for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards were crafted by writer/directors. Expect auteurs to be well-represented in this race once again.

“We wanted to raise the bar,” admits four-time Oscar winner Richard King about the complex sound design on the Netflix neo-Western “The Harder They Fall.”
The film “presented a lot of challenges and a lot of opportunities, a lot of very fun opportunities, for sound,” he says. “I can’t speak highly enough of Jeymes Samuels, a genius. He really is. He wrote the film, he directed it, he wrote the music. There’s generally two or three levels of meaning going on in any given scene and it was just fun to explore those and really try to make something different.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Zest of the West: Samuels’ Western Soap Opera Long on Style, Short on Substance
In a film which plays as both recuperation and revisionism, Jeymes Samuels goes for broke in his feature debut, The Harder They Fall, a Neo-Western which fabricates a narrative based on a handful of real-life historical figures erased by white gatekeepers of both history and fiction.
Clearly a labor of love, the British musician previously lensed a 2013 medium length film They Die By Dawn covering the same territory, but once again captures a high profile ensemble of notables for an All-Black Western. Unfortunately, the whole is not the sum of its parts, and despite speckled with action, violence, and a script full of withering zingers (thanks in part to co-writer Boaz Yakin), the narrative fiber disintegrates into slim pickings once the smoke clears and the dust settles.…...

What say we saddle up and mosey’ down to the ole’ multiplex, pardner’? Or something like that since we’ve got an opportunity to take in a true cinematic rarity. Several decades ago the Western (or as the Variety “trade paper’ called them “Oaters”) was a staple at the local “Bijou”, just like comedies, musicals, romances, and horror flicks. And TV “rode alongside’ with the genre encompassing over half of network primetime fare. Oh, but now…(cue the tumbleweeds). Sure, there have been modern Westerns like the recent Let Him Go and Cry MacHo, but they’re pretty much set in modern times. No, this new one takes place near the tail end of the 19th century and its cast is mainly black (I’d say African-American but many...
