"We have to get out of here! Run!" Netflix has debuted a full-length trailer for Swedish survival thriller Red Dot, by Swedish filmmaker Alain Darborg. The film follows a young couple taunted while camping in the snow. When Nadja becomes pregnant, David and Nadja make an attempt to rekindle their relationship by traveling to the north of Sweden for a vacation but soon their romantic trip turns into a nightmare. It's clear the "red dot" in this is just a laser pointer, likely attached to a rifle, from one of these crazy strangers. Red Dot co-stars Anastasios Soulis and Nanna Blondell as David and Nadja, with Johannes Kuhnke, Kalled Mustonen, and Tomas Bergström. This is a good tease - I'm just still wondering what happens after the flare. Who is after them and why? Only one way to find out - the film debuts on Netflix in February. Here's the...

"Hey, stop that!" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an indie survival thriller titled Red Dot, from Swedish filmmaker Alain Darborg. The film follows a young couple taunted outdoors while camping. Red Dot co-stars Anastasios Soulis and Nanna Blondell as David and Nadja, along with Johannes Kuhnke, Kalled Mustonen, and Tomas Bergström. This looks solid, that laser pointer is a seriously scary way of frightening people from afar. I just wonder what happens next? How do they escape? The inciting incident of Downhill takes place on the deck of a ski resort in the Alps. In the midst of lunch, a family of four watches a controlled avalanche tumble towards the outdoor restaurant where they’re eating. It continues growing in size and severity, and those around them begin panicking and ducking for cover. The family’s father follows suit, grabbing his phone off the table and running for safety, leaving his wife and two sons to withstand the arctic blast. The quick whiteout ends up being a false alarm, but the real damage has just begun.

Directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, collaborating on a script with Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, have Americanized and remade Ruben Ostlund’s 2014 black comedy Force Majeure. When “Parasite” filmmaker Bong Joon Ho won this year’s Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign-Language Film, the beloved Korean auteur used his podium to deliver a necessary message: “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” It’s a lesson any film fan could stand to learn, including the audience who opts to take in Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s well-intentioned but ultimately flat “Downhill,” an Americanized remake of Ruben Östlund’s understandably lauded 2014 black comedy “Force Majeure.” While the duo have snagged an enviable cast, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell taking on the lead roles of a married couple on edge, and a script co-written by “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong,

Earlier this week, IndieWire unveiled our list of the 100 Best Movies of the Decade.
As you might imagine, selecting those movies from the thousands that have been released over the last 10 years wasn’t an easy process. A multitude of factors went into the team’s individual and collective choices, but when we thought back on the films that defined this decade, we found ourselves returning to individual moments as a pathway into engaging with the movies around them. None of the modern classics that made it onto our list can be distilled into a single scene, but certain passages from them — like vivid flashbulb memories, or a lighthouse guiding us back to the shore — still manage to perfectly capture the essence of their full power.
From the Big Bang to Bryan Adams’ “Heaven,” and from Godard to a gas station striptease, these are the 25 best movie scenes of the last 10 years.

The skiing trip just got a little busier. Deadline reports that Will Ferrell is joining Julia Louis-Dreyfus in “Downhill,” the English-language remake of Ruben Östlund’s acclaimed “Force Majeure.” Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who helmed “The Way Way Back” and won an Oscar for co-writing Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants,” are directing for Fox Searchlight.
Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, and Kristofer Hivju co-starred in the original, which won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film; Östlund’s follow-up, “The Square,” won the Palme d’Or last year.
“Obviously, Searchlight is like family at this point. We’re honored to be working with them for a third time. But, to also have our paths cross with Julia, and a fellow Groundling alum in Will, makes this all the more special and exciting for us,” Faxon and Rash said in a statement Deadline.

The end of the world is pretty terrifying, no matter how it happens. In the upcoming Netflix series “The Rain,” the main culprit is a deadly downpour that wipes out most of Scandinavia’s population.
People outrunning killer weather isn’t entirely new in apocalypse stories (just ask Jake Gyllenhaal), but it looks like this show is more concerned with what happens years later, after two children who survived the initial attack venture back out into the world to find companions. Emerging from a bunker they’ve been locked in for half a decade, they eventually found people who had their own way of lasting through the killer precipitation.
After finding a small pack of other survivors, it’s clear that even though the streets and schools and supermarkets are deserted, the danger didn’t end when the deadly virus got swept away. There are guns and gangs and killer...

Netflix has released a trailer for a new film called The Rain, which is a post-apocalyptic thriller about a group of young survivors who band together to try and continue to survive a virus that is carried by the rain. Basically, they have to do everything they can to stay dry. I know the premise sounds kind of silly with a tagline like, "Stay dry, stay alive", but it actually looks really good! It looks like the story will go into some very dark territory. The trailer has definitely sparked my interest. Watch the trailer for yourself and let us know if it sparks yours!

In a world where precipitation carries a deadly virus, an umbrella isn't just an item of luxury, it's a necessary tool for survival. Calling to mind post-apocalyptic films and Richard Laymon's One Rainy Night (one of my favorite infection novels of all time), the new teaser trailer for Netflix's series The Rain may have you digging out your yellow slicker (just don't walk by any sewer drains while wearing it).

"This is our lifeline!" Cinedigm has released another new trailer for a survival thriller titled The Chamber, which first premiered at the Horror Channel FrightFest in 2017. We actually featured a trailer for this one year ago, but it's just now finally getting a release in February. The film is about a Special Ops team that takes a small submersible craft (read: submarine) beneath the Yellow Sea off the coast of North Korea. Some things go wrong, and they end up trapped underwater in a tiny "chamber" - hence the title. The cast includes Charlotte Salt, Johannes Kuhnke, Christian Hillborg, and Elliot Levey. I'm still not really too sure what to make of this, and the release delay seems like a sign it isn't that great. But you never know. Dive in. “The Square” lands its bullseyes, over and over, with a faultless precision that grows duller with each strike. Its targets are twofold: moral hypocrisy, especially among the moneyed and well-meaning, and the contemporary-art-museum world. Set in a cosmopolitan and socially stratified Stockholm, writer-director Ruben Ostlund’s latest takes aim at fellow members of the artistic and academic intelligentsia in a work that feels tailor-made for them and possibly them alone. Ostlund’s “Force Majeure” became a critical hit by heaping (rightful) humiliation on a man (played by Johannes Kuhnke) enjoying a family ski vacation who flees alone when an avalanche falls,...

When submarine pilot Mats (Johannes Kuhnke) is approached by a low-rent Donald Pleasence to take a three-man Special Ops team deep into contested waters near the 38th Parallel, he’s understandably sceptical. Leading the mysterious trio is “Red” Edwards (Charlotte Salt), who’s joined by the belligerent Parks (James McArdle) and the gentle Denholm (Elliott Levey).
While submerged, the top ship is boarded, and suddenly the four explorers are trapped together in the underwater chamber. To add vinegar to the wound, catastrophe strikes and they start taking on water. Tensions fray. Clichéd dialogue is exchanged. Who, if anyone, will emerge alive?

MaryAnn’s quick take… A wonder of low-budget suspense, this is a horror movie with no monsters, only people in an impossible situation. Intense, claustrophobic, totally gripping. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
An American military team commandeers a rickety old submersible from a Swedish research vessel in South Korean waters for a secret mission. Submersible pilot Mats (Johannes Kuhnke) is unhappy that he has too little time to prep his “scrappy and fragile” sub to carry their mysterious payload and more people than it really should, but he has no choice, and off they go to the ocean floor: himself, black-ops leader Red (Charlotte Salt: Beowulf), tech nerd Denholm (Elliot Levey: Denial), and hothead (there’s always a hothead) Parks (James McArdle: Star Wars: The Force Awakens). With all of Mat’s safety procedures...

"If you do this, we're dead. We're all dead!" The first official trailer has debuted for an indie survival thriller titled The Chamber, which first premiered at the Horror Channel FrightFest last year. The film is about a Special Ops team that takes a small submersible craft (read: submarine) beneath the Yellow Sea off the coast of North Korea. Some things go wrong, and they end up trapped underwater in a tiny "chamber" - hence the title. The cast includes Charlotte Salt, Johannes Kuhnke, Christian Hillborg and Elliot Levey. I'm not sure what to make of this. The footage is a bit confusing - I can't tell if it's some weird creature or alien under the water, or something the North Koreans put down there, or their own screw up that trapped them. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ben Parker's The Chamber, direct from YouTube: A claustrophobic...

"Have you cried as an adult?" My question to Ruben Östlund, the director of ice-cold Swedish black comedy Force Majeure (2014), is not as impertinent as it might appear. It's a reference to a scene of his film in which patriarch Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke), on holiday with his family at a luxury French ski resort, implodes when he comes to terms with cowardly fleeing from an avalanche without his wife and kids. "Yeah, of course" he replies, "but not in that horrible 'man-cry' way like in the film. If you don't cry in the right way, you get no sympathy at all. If it suddenly bursts out, tears, snot, it comes out in something that is not sympathetic at all." Those kind of caustic judgements are the catalyst for Force Majeure's glacial look into human relationships.

Ruben Östlund’s tale of a couple’s disintegrating relationship in the wake of an avalanche is a triumph of calm detachment
Force Majeure’s Ruben Östlund: ‘Men are made to feel like they should protect’
The common wisdom about moments of high spectacle in cinema is that they’re best built up to, saved till last: hit your viewers with a closing whammy, whether it’s a Busby Berkeley dance finale or the apocalyptic slamdown in an action movie, and send them home shaking. In Force Majeure, Swedish writer-director Ruben Östlund does it differently. He delivers a (literally) earth-shaking show-stopper some 10 minutes in, and for the rest of the film leaves us – and, crucially, his traumatised characters – getting to grips with the event and its consequences.
The incident is an avalanche that happens during a middle-class Swedish family’s ski break in the Alps. Suddenly erupting in an...

The latest striking, singular foreign film to fall prey to the clutches of Hollywood remake artists, Swedish director Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure is a gloriously uncomfortable deconstruction of masculinity and cowardice.
A middle-class Swedish family holidaying in the Alps find their picture-perfect facade beginning to crack after a not-quite-brush with mortality. During lunch at a mountaintop restaurant, a seemingly distant avalanche crashes down over the terrace and envelops everything in sight. It's a deftly executed exclamation mark of a scene, and sets in motion the almost unbearably quiet domestic drama that follows.
The disaster movie setup rapidly gives way to something much pricklier and more gripping - as it turns out, the avalanche is at a safe distance from the restaurant, but it leaves chaos in its wake nonetheless.

THR reports that Julia Louis-Dreyfus is in talks to star in Fox Searchlight's remake of "Force Majeure," the hilarious and critically adored comedy directed by Ruben Ostlund. This film about a family vacationing in the French Alps, whose lives take a turn for the comically dysfunctional after an avalanche, won Cannes' Un Certain Regard jury prize in 2014, picked up a Golden Globe nomination and was shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Magnolia opened the film last Fall to rave reviews, and it's now streaming on Netflix. Read More: Ruben Ostlund on Directing "Force Majeure" THR's sources say the multi-Emmy-winning "Veep" star is also attached to produce the project. She will presumably play Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli, fabulous, in the original), a woman who slowly comes unhinged after her husband Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke) chickens out on her and their kids during the false-alarm force of nature that threatens them.

The dust, as they say, has well and truly settled on this year’s Glasgow Film Festival. The line-up didn't include much in the way of 'big', mainstream-friendly titles, but it did provide plenty of enjoyable films, including Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young, Xavier Dolan’s Mommy, and David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows. Since these movies have already been reviewed on the Empire site, let’s consider two other Gff offerings that are worth looking out for. The first is Force Majeure, a provocative, observational marital drama that contains one of the most remarkable sequences you’ll see this year. The sequence in question takes place at a fancy Alpine ski resort, where a handsome Swedish couple — Tomas (Johannes Bah Kuhnke) and Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli) — are having lunch with their two children. Sitting on a scenic terrace, they suddenly become aware that a tidal wave of snow is cascading towards them.

After winning the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize in Cannes and going on to strong box office, great word of mouth and making the Foreign Language Oscar shortlist in December, Swedish helmer Ruben Ostlund’s Force Majeure was shockingly omitted from the Academy’s nominations roster on Thursday. Today, Ostlund good-naturedly posted the video above to YouTube in which he watches the nominations with producer Erik Hemmendorff from New York — while eating apples, questioning the familiar nominee faces, and predicting those in his category. The outcome is not exactly that of 2012’s Time Freak team who captured their nomination live to much positive emotion — but it kind of looks like that was the point. I understand Ostlund sent today’s video to Force Majeure‘s partners with a cheeky suggestion it might be a good addition to the film’s Facebook page. It apparently came with the subject line: “Worst Man Cry.

Those who follow our content know that the Best Foreign Language Film race is one of the ones we follow closely, if not the closest. Tomorrow morning the five nominees for the Academy Award in this category will be announced bringing the months long journey to an end. The real climax will happen once the winner is announced in February, but for the five lucky finalists, a nomination is already a miraculous feat. It has been a long road in which many factors besides the quality of the films come into play.
The first few submissions were announced in mid-August and from that point on dozens of countries selected a film to participate. That’s the first cut. Each film had to compete against all the other eligible films released in their respective country that year. In some cases the competition might be slight, but in territories with a sizable film industry the selection process is not as clear-cut.
Once the submission deadline arrived, a total of 83 nations had submitted an entry - a record number. Several entries came from countries submitting for the first time. Out of those 83 films I personally managed to watch a little over 60 via festivals, screenings, and screeners. I was able to chat with about 30 of the films’ directors and learn about their personal stories and how differently they each approach the filmmaking process. Every year this is really a lesson on artistic diversity, industry development, and political and social sensitivities from across the globe. It’s truly amazing.
There were many great and memorable films among the entries I was able to watch and I hope all of them get distributions deals eventually. However, as with everything, we all have our favorites. The 12 films listed below are some of the best cinematic works I witness in the past year overall, not only among those in a foreign language. Several of them are among my ten favorite films of the year and others are included in my longer year-end list. “Timbuktu,” “Gett,” “White God,” and hopefully “Tangerines” will be among my 2015 favorites.
It has been a great year for World Cinema. Go out there and see these films. They are all incredible works of art each in its own right.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has unveiled its 2015 line-up which includes films representing 54 countries, 23 world premieres and 53 U.S. premieres. The U.S. premiere of Niki Caro’s McFarland USA will close out the 30th fest. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.
The festival runs from January 27-February 7.
Below is the list of World and U.S. Premiere films followed by the list of titles by sidebar categories.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

"Force Majeure" is Ruben Östlund's gruesomely funny fourth feature, winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes and now a top contender for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. A marriage hits the rocks — or better yet the ice — in this Swedish dark comedy that pits nature against the sacred, so-called nuclear family. Tomas and Ebba (terrifically played by Johannes Kuhnke and Lisa Loven Kongsli) are on holiday in the French Alps when an avalanche, in the film's spectacularly enacted centerpiece, nearly swallows them and their two blond children. Though the threat turns out to be a false alarm, it sends the cowardly Tomas literally running away from his family, leaving Ebba alone with the kids in a fog of snow. Leery of her husband, Ebba twirls into a tizzy of doubt and confusion as Tomas' already frail male ego implodes: it's fascinating to watch their discussions of the he-said/she-said particulars,...
