In the 2000 crime drama Sexy Beast, the laid-back bacchanalian lifestyle of a quartet of middle-aged Brits is rent asunder by the very announcement that an old cohort from their past lives of crime is coming to pay them a visit. The two married couples — Gal and Deedee, and Gal’s best friend Aitch and his wife Jackie — are doing just fine in their respective Spanish villas when Aitch gets a call that Don Logan wants to see them. Upon Aitch sharing this news grimly at dinner one night, the four of them each look uniquely horrified, as if they’ve just learned of the death of a close friend or family member.

Exclusive: Sarah Greene is “excited” to be at the center of a high-stakes “love triangle” involving James McArdle and Emun Elliott in Sexy Beast, the Paramount+ prequel to director Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 classic.
Greene tells me she is a great admirer of Amanda Redman’s sultry performance as former adult actress Deedee Harrison – the role that holds a place in the annals of gangster movie history – and the part that the Cork-born Normal People star takes on in the Sexy Beast drama that premieres on Paramount+ this Thursday, January 25.
Greene watched the movie “over and over again and just studied her through line. And she’s very still, she doesn’t say a whole lot.”
We chat just as the actress is in the midst of shooting the second season of Bad Sisters with her Garvey siblings played by Sharon Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle and Eve Hewson. “We were all like,...

Plot: Gal Dove and Don Logan are best friends and small-town thieves living the good life in ‘90s East London. Deedee Harrison is a captivating adult film star whose ambitions to control her own personal destiny and her love affair with Gal Dove put her in danger. Teddy Bass is a treacherous, rising name in the gangster world who seduces Gal and Don into his criminal web.
Review: Of all the films I never expected to get a prequel, Sexy Beast would never have occurred to me. The 2001 crime movie, director Jonathan Glazer’s feature debut, focused on a pair of former friends whose lives have drifted apart since they were thieves working for a London crime boss. That film was barely a blip at the domestic box office but garnered critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for Sir Ben Kingsley. Since Sexy Beast, screenwriters Louis Mellis and David Scinto...

Sir Ben Kingsley, 79, has one foot planted in Beverly Hills, the other in Oxfordshire, England — nearly 200 miles southeast of his native Lancashire, where he was raised by his British model and actress mom and his father, a Kenyan-born family doctor of Indian descent.
“[Oxfordshire] is more Shakespeare country,” Kingsley said on the phone. “The Cotswold Hills, limestone hills that run through the center of the British Isles across the Channel into France. It looks like Normandy. Our house looks rather French, a petite château. It looks like it should be on a wine label.”
Wine is front and center, per usual, at this year’s Sonoma International Film Festival, where Kingsley is attending the world premiere of “Jules,” from director Marc Turtletaub and writer Gavin Steckler. In this sci-fi heart-tugger with a senior twist, Kingsley delicately portrays elderly Pennsylvania suburbanite Milton. He’s losing control of his memory, so no one...

The latest videogame to inspire a big screen outing, can Disney’s Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time deliver on the promise of the source material?
What Is It
It's the latest attempt to break the curse of the videogame movie, and one that lots and lots of money is being thrown at. It might need it too: the graveyard of videogame adaptations is well populated, with even the most successful to date - the original Tomb Raider - failing to deliver a decent film to match the box office takings (a reboot is, somewhat inevitably, in the works). The less said about the likes of Max Payne, Hitman and such like the better.
Prince Of Persia is a different beast, though. It's based on the gaming franchise that Jordan Mechner sparked into life in the late 1980s, and that's seen many different instalments since. Action adventures at heart,...

Only daft final act revelations offer release from Scorsese’s cinematic madhouse; otherwise the smart, scary onslaught of insane ideas and imagery is inescapable.
Does a film need a satisfying story to succeed? It’s a question worth asking of Shutter Island (2010) because, by any sane criteria, its narrative is founded on one of the most ludicrous premises in memory – a suspension bridge of disbelief that comes crashing down the minute it is revealed. And yet, aptly considering Martin Scorsese’s film is in part a loving tribute to Hitchcock, Psycho has a rubbish ending too, and it doesn’t stop that film from being endlessly rewatchable.
Like Psycho, it’s all in the telling. Shutter Island builds its menace by stealth, a brilliantly modulated prison of claustrophobic camera angles, steely colour palettes, sharp edits and oppressive sound design.

To celebrate the imminent release of Roman Polanski’s latest (and possibly last) film, The Ghost, I’ve put together a top ten list of political figures who have been portrayed in cinema by some of our finest actors. Whether they are contemporary, historical or in some cases, made up, politicians have run the whole gamut of film genres. They have been cast as heroes, villains, clowns and tragic figures with Shakespearean-like downfalls.
The corridors of power echo with intrigue, corruption and calamity. The list presents both real and imagined political characters to highlight their dexterity as cinematic figures and also to stop it from being completely boring.
Please feel free to comment and add your own suggestions.

Chloe Moretz's hit-girl has inadvertently dispatched our last big expletive. There's more than one reason why we shouldn't be pleased
Warning: this blog contains quotes that employ very explicit language
In Kick-Ass, an 11-year-old girl calls a roomful of grown-ups "cunts". And nobody gives a damn. The film has managed to evoke a half-hearted whimper from the Mail, while the Australian Family Association has deemed its language "offensive". Protest-wise, that's pretty much it. A sorry milestone has been passed. The c-word has become acceptable parlance for children in mainstream movies. We'll be the poorer for it.
One by one, the words with which we used to abuse our fellows have been gradually decommissioned. It's been a long time since you could successfully vent your wrath by calling some pain-in-the-neck a bugger or a bastard. Nowadays, it wouldn't be worth wasting the breath required. Employ the c-word, however, and you...

Anne Hathaway has admitted to channelling Nigella's 'sensuality' for her White Queen in Alice in Wonderland. But she's only blown the whistle on the greatest source of character inspiration in modern cinema
Aside from the boycott drama and the mixed reviews, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland has drawn attention for one reason: Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the White Queen. Apparently, it's based entirely on Nigella Lawson. Tim Burton hinted as much last month, noting Lawson's ability to look "really nuts", and Hathaway herself confirmed the rumours this week by praising Lawson's "passion" and "sensuality".
To the uninitiated, all this Nigella talk might seem like nothing more than a cheap ploy to get a few more dads to go to the pictures. But in reality Burton and Hathaway are simply tapping into a long history of movie characters based on television chefs. It's a little-known fact that almost...

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry
List # 1
By Alex Simon
When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.
1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah.

Everyone loves to root for the bad guy. In movies, the bad guys usually get the best lines, and there's something inherently fascinating about the pathos and psychosis that some writers are able to imbue in the most villainous characters. Sure, not all of them are as charismatic as others -- some are just so flat-out terrifying and twisted that you definitely aren't rooting for them -- instead, you're filled with a dreadfully morbid curiosity about what the hell they could possibly think of next.
Let's be honest, the best movie villains are interesting. They allow us to see our darker fantasies on-screen, to give our nastier thoughts an outlet. The best ones are well-acted, well-designed, and range from the cold and calculating to the gleefully psychotic. They're monsters either way, but sometimes it's harder to tell. They're what make movies interesting. And like I said -- they get the best lines.

New York -- Time Warner has chosen to effect the planned separation of Time Warner Cable into an independent company in the form of a spinoff, the entertainment giant said late Thursday.
It had previously said it could spin off its 85% stake in Twc to shareholders, offer to exchange Twc shares for Twx shares or use some combination of the two.
In the spinoff, Tw shareholders will get a certain, to-be-determined number of Twc shares. Investors can then decide whether to continue holding both sets of shares or just focus on the cable or entertainment-centric company.
A spokesman wouldn't say when the spinoff was likely to happen. The number of Twc shares that Tw will receive in the transaction will be set later.
The separation is expected to happen this quarter.
On Wednesday, Twc had named CEO Glenn Britt to the added post of chairman, effective after the separation. Don Logan had been chairman.

- Few actors ever get the chance to go to the extremes that Sir Ben Kingsley has in his career. In 1982 he won an Oscar for the title role in Gandhi, portraying history’s most non-violent revolutionary. 22 years later, he would be nominated for another Oscar, this time for his portrayal of Don Logan, arguably the most brutal, animalistic, and outright scary gangster, ever, sent to persuade a retired bank robber out of retirement for one last job in Sexy Beast. In director John Dahl’s (Rounders, The Last Seduction) black comedy/romantic comedy/crime thriller You Kill Me, Kingsley plays Frank Falenczyk, a hitman for the Buffalo, NY Polish crime syndicate, battling with alcoholism. After botching a hit on a rival Irish crime family, his sympathetic uncle ships him to San Francisco to overcome his addiction. With the help of a supportive AA sponsor (Luke Wilson) and a new

Jeff Bewkes, who turned HBO into a sensation, was promoted Wednesday to president and chief operating officer at Time Warner, possibly solidifying the executive's position as heir apparent to CEO Richard Parsons, whose contract with the world's largest media conglomerate expires in May 2008. The company also said that Don Logan, who had been a co-equal to Bewkes and is a 35-year veteran at TW, will retire at the end of the year. Bewkes had been chairman of TW's entertainment networks group, a position he held since 2002 after Parsons was elevated to CEO from chief operating officer, a title Parsons once shared with Bob Pittman after the ill-fated merger with America Online. Pittman left TW more than three years ago.

NEW YORK -- It was a summit of industry heavyweights at the St. Regis hotel Wednesday night as the Museum of the Moving Image honored Jeffrey Bewkes, chairman of the entertainment and networks group of Time Warner, and Viacom co-president and co-chief operating officer Leslie Moonves at a gala dinner. In his toast to his right-hand man Bewkes, TW chairman and CEO Richard Parsons signaled that the executive was being groomed for higher honors thanks to his successful supervision of key company operations. "Everyone knows this man is the future of our company," Parsons said. Indeed, Bewkes has long been tipped as Parsons' eventual successor in the CEO role, though the company hasn't laid out detailed succession plans for the future. Parsons also said it was his "single best decision" as CEO to make Bewkes and Don Logan his deputies at TW right after he ascended to the top spot.
NEW YORK -- Time Warner chairman and CEO Richard Parsons in 2003 saw his first cash bonus in three years and a 50% jump in his base salary, the company said in its proxy statement filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing also showed increased cash bonuses for other top TW executives -- a result of management's progress in stabilizing the firm's financial position -- and disclosed that Franklin Raines, CEO of mortgage reseller Fannie Mae, will step down from his seat on the company's board. Parsons received a base salary of $1.5 million for 2003, up from $1 million in 2002. In addition, he got an $8 million cash bonus. Parsons' right-hand men Jeffrey Bewkes, chairman of TW's entertainment and networks group, and Don Logan, chairman of the media and communications group, each received the same $1 million salary that they had gotten in 2002. However, their bonuses rose by $1.5 million to $6.5 million each for 2003.
