“I was definitely really excited to tackle the union stuff,” says Morgan Spector of what storyline from the second season of “The Gilded Age” he was most excited to sink his teeth into. In the latest episodes of the HBO drama series, his industrialist character George Russell must confront rising unrest amongst his factory workers in Pittsburgh. The actor relished this arc because the series was able to depict a period of American history that was “so dramatic” and “incredibly violent,” one that is “under-known and under-discussed” in United States’ history. Watch our exclusive video interview.
The conflict between George and his workers speaks to the “delicate balancing act” Spector has to perform in the role because the audience loves George and yet he must do some occasionally ruthless things. Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 6, “Warning Shots.”] Morgan Spector‘s George Russell saw the climax of the workers’ strike in The Gilded Age Season 2’s sixth episode. Tensions reached a tipping point when Henderson (Darren Goldstein), the union’s leader, and his men faced being shot and killed as they tried to prevent scabs from crossing their picket line. At the very last moment, George stopped the police from carrying out any bloodshed — a move that left his right-hand man, Richard Clay (Patrick Page), seething. Spector tells TV Insider that while the union has won this battle, there will be more to this war in a potential third season. And George’s humane decision in Episode 6 may cause an irreparable rift between him and Richard, similar to a real-life robber baron and his No. 2 from the same era. “Obviously these [union] issues aren’t going anywhere, but I would expect we would probably ...

Season 2 of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” delves deeper into the steel strikers and railroad labor unions that loomed in Season 1 — a storyline that parallels the recent entertainment industry strikes, co-showrunner Sonja Warfield says.
On Sunday episode, railroad magnate George Russell (Morgan Spector) met with the captain of a labor union Mr. Henderson (Darren Goldstein) in an attempt to quell the rising tensions from the many men he employed to construct the life-changing railroads that made him rich. With the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike last week, the most recent episode of the HBO drama series could not be more timely.
“It is so timely. As much as things change, they stay the same. We’re in a time period in America where there’s a huge income inequality. The top-tier people are making all this money and then the middle class is disappearing. And then we have people on the lower end,...

Sharper is a thriller movie directed by Benjamin Caron with Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, Briana Middleton and John Lithgow.
An elegant and very classic thriller you can enjoy this Friday on Apple TV+.
This movie knows how to balance a slow technique, brilliant actors and classic plot which is totally familiar.
Movie Review
A paused rhythm for this movie about tricksters that is totally predictable and yet manages to fool us from its direct title and its “film noir” look, studied and elegant: it does not bring us anything new and does not promise to do so either, but the entire setting, the characters and its giddy calm rhythm knows how to work with precision to do the exact thing it needs to do at each moment, without getting lost or trying to invent something new.

"I'm gonna take a billion dollars - and aim it in your direction." Apple has debuted the full official trailer for the movie Sharper, a "neo noir" con comedy set in New York City. Sharper unfolds within the secrets of New York City, from the penthouses of Fifth Avenue all the way out to the many shadowy corners of Queens. Motivations are suspect and expectations are turned upside down when nothing is as it seems. It's described as a "psychological thriller" but looks much more like an intricate noir crime thriller, taking on the snobby, wealthy world of NYC. The script for this film was on the "Black List" before being produced by Apple and A24. The excellent ensemble cast features Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, Brianna Middleton, Darren Goldstein, & John Lithgow. This is getting both a theatrical release and streaming debut, hence the partnership between these two distributors.

The cast has been set for Sam Mendes’ upcoming HBO comedy pilot “The Franchise,” which is set in the world of franchise moviemaking.
Billy Magnussen (“No Time to Die”) will star as Adam, Jessica Hynes (“Spaced”) as Steph, Darren Goldstein (“The Affair”) as Pat, Lolly Adefpoe (“Ghosts”) as Dag and Isaac Powell (“Dear Evan Hansen”) as Bryson. Daniel Brühl and Richard E. Grant are also set in recurring roles.
Based on an idea by Mendes, the story follows a hopeful crew trapped inside the dysfunctional, nonsensical, joyous hellscape of franchise superhero movie-making. If and when they finally make the day, questions still loom: Is this Hollywood’s new dawn or cinema’s last stand? Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant?

Per the official logline, the project follows “a hopeful crew trapped inside the dysfunctional, nonsensical, joyous hellscape of franchise superhero movie-making. If and when they finally make the day, the question they must face — is this Hollywood’s new dawn or cinema’s last stand? Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant?”

"Let me give you a piece of advice - if you're going to steal, steal a Lot." Apple has revealed the first look teaser trailer for a new con comedy set in New York City called Sharper, marking the feature directorial debut of TV director Benjamin Caron. All of the synopses available so far are vague so far because this one should be a fun one when it opens in February: a con artist takes on Manhattan's billionaires. "Motivations are suspect and expectations are turned upside down when nothing is as it seems." The script for this film was on the "Black List" before being produced by Apple and A24. The ensemble cast features Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, Brianna Middleton, Darren Goldstein, & John Lithgow. There's no real footage in this teaser, just a first look glimpse at the cast's faces flashing before money flying by in the background.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired global rights to Maven Screen Media’s A Mouthful of Air based on Amy Koppelman’s novel of the same name.
Koppelman also wrote and directed the movie, which Deadline first reported, starring Mank Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried, American Horror Story‘s Finn Wittrock, Amy Irving, Paul Giamatti, Jennifer Carpenter, Britt Robertson, Josh Hamilton, Michael Gaston, Darren Goldstein and Alysia Reiner.
Seyfried plays Julie Davis — warm, kind, loving to her husband and child — who writes bestselling children’s books about unlocking your fears. But she has yet to unlock the dark secret that has haunted her own life. When her second child is born, that trauma is brought to the fore, and with it, a crushing battle to survive.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety“…
With the West End set to reopen in May, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cinderella” musical, with a book by freshly minted Oscar nominee Emerald Fennell, is back in rehearsals. “We just had our first run-through for Emerald,” Lloyd Webber tells me. “She hadn’t actually heard her script for the first time properly. It was an absolutely extraordinarily emotional moment for all of us because we were like, ‘Oh, my God, we’re in a theater. We’re actually doing what we do.’ I walked off to the back and I must say, I did have a tear.”
“It’s what I love. All I want to do now, in my rather advanced age, is to make sure that we pass on everything we’re doing in theaters to a new generation in a better way,” says Lloyd Webber, who turned 73 on March 22.

When it comes to playing bad, Jason Bateman has gotten pretty good. So good, in fact, that he racked up three Emmy nominations for directing, producing and starring in “Ozark” this year. It’s the second consecutive bids he’s gotten in Best Drama Actor and Best Drama Directing and his first in Best Drama Series for the Netflix crime drama, which casts him as a Chicago financier who flees with his family to Missouri to launder money for a drug cartel. Prior to that he received Best Comedy Actor noms for “Arrested Development” in 2005 and 2013.
Bateman has chosen the same episode for his acting and directing submissions: the season two opener “Reparations.” In this installment, Marty Byrd (Bateman) is trying to save his casino deal with the loathsome Snells (Peter Mullen and Lisa Emery) after they murder one of the drug cartel’s top men. [Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Ozark” Season 2, including the ending. For a spoiler-free review, read IndieWire’s initial reaction.]
If the first season of “Ozark” saw the Byrde family in denial about their circumstances and trying to bargain their way to freedom, then the second season moves through depression and into acceptance. The Kübler-Ross model for processing grief may not seem like a fitting comparison for a family sent spiraling from one catastrophe to the next, but remember this: That model isn’t actually for processing grief; it’s for people who know they’re going to die, and that seems about right for Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney), if a bit dark for their two kids.
Under this framework, the ending is reasonable, but it’s also indicative of what went wrong with Season 2. Chris Mundy’s thrilling first season hit the gas so hard it feels like these new episodes are constantly slamming on the brakes,...

"You want to fire me? Try it." HBO has released an official trailer for the real-world film Paterno, telling the story of football coach Joe Paterno, played by Al Pacino. While this will be airing directly on HBO, it is still a feature film, and it is the latest feature made by talented filmmaker Barry Levinson (who last made The Wizard of Lies also for HBO). Paterno centers on Penn State's Joe Paterno in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal. After becoming the winningest coach in college football history, his legacy is challenged and he is forced to face questions of institutional failure. The full cast includes Riley Keough, Annie Parisse, Kathy Baker, Greg Grunberg, Peter Jacobson, Tess Frazer, Faith Logan, Darren Goldstein, Midori Francis, and Benjamin Cook. Pacino looks fully deep into this role, should be good. Here's the official trailer (+ teaser) for Barry Levinson's Paterno movie,...

The big screen adaptation of the bestselling The Girl On The Train has been subject of considerable buzz, seeming to promise a Gone Girl-like thriller. There are indeed some parallels to that earlier film adaptation of a bestselling thriller but maybe less than you might expect.
Like Gone Girl, this story is part psychological thriller and part crime mystery. Also like that earlier film, as you get to know these characters, you discover they are not what they at first seemed, nor is the situation what is seems at first either. But anyone expecting a taut mystery will be disappointed. Instead, director Tate Taylor (The Help) delves into the characters’ inner make-up and complex relationships. While Tate does give the audience moments of heartbreak (and some psycho-sexual sparks as well) as we get glimpses into troubled lives, how it all links to the plot is not always clear.

Dianne Wiest is the moth that hovers around the flame that is Tonya Pinkins. Unfortunately for this little office moth, that flame quickly turns into a blowtorch in Joel Drake Johnson’s new play “Rasheeda Speaking,” which opened Wednesday at the Pershing Square Signature Center. It’s obvious from the moment Jaclyn (Pinkins) steps into her workplace, a doctor’s office, that this middle-aged black woman carries much history with her. Before she arrives, her coworker Ileen (Wiest) and the doctor (Darren Goldstein) have been talking about her “attitude” and how best to discipline her, transfer her, fire her, get her out of their.
