Estonia’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Nov 15-Dec 1) has completed the line-up for its official selection, the festival’s main competition strand.
These include seven world premieres, five international and one European premiere, adding to the previously announced eight films.
Titles include Muscle, a psychological thriller from UK director Gerard Johnson, known for previous features Hyena and Tony. His latest film follows a man who attempts to get his life back on track by getting physically into shape but encounters unexpected consequences after meeting an intimidating gym teacher. Alex Garland has started shooting Ex Machina and principal photography is also underway on the first UK-Albania co-production.
Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander star in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina. Garland also wrote the screenplay.
The story follows a 24-year-old coder at the world’s largest internet company, who wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to the reclusive CEO of the company. But when the coder arrives at the remote location, he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl.
Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich are producing the $15m feature through DNA Films with support of Film4 and Universal Pictures with the latter distributing the psychological thriller around the world.

The UK’s Film and Music Entertainment (F&Me) has joined forces with Albania’s Act Triangle Productions (Atp), the Netherland’s Popov Film and Germany’s Lara Film for Fatmir Koci’s Amsterdam Express, the first UK-Albania co-production.

The UK-Albania-Netherlands-Germany co-production has just finished the first segment of its six-week shoot in Amsterdam before now moving to Tirana. The film will will wrap on Aug 23 and will do post-production in Amsterdam.
Koci’s fourth feature is about a young Albanian emigrant (Blerim Destani) in Amsterdam who falls victim to the threats of drug and sex slave traffickers. He is also managing his marriage of convenience with a Dutch girl and his true love back in Albania. Koci wrote the script with Jonathan Preece.
