While most of us live and learn it, a select group of people love to ignore that each of us is born with imperfections and mercilessly mocks others. That’s right—internet trolls.

After the steamrolling success of her show, Workin’ Moms, actress Catherine Reitman has been the target of many hurtful and downright mean posts and tweets.

It’s a semi-annual tradition during the PBS executive session at the Television Critics Assn.: Asking president/CEO Paula Kerger about the state of funding for the public broadcaster. And so it went on Monday, during the public broadcaster’s portion of the winter 2024 press tour — and despite the ongoing gridlock in Washington, Kerger said things, at least for now, are going “Ok.”
“We are advanced funded, and that we always have been,” Kerger told reporters. “And the idea behind it is that you need to know that when you finish a project, you’re going to actually have the funds for it. So we we actually know what our funding is right now. Now, that’s not to say someone can come in and try to rescind some of the funding, and that happened to us some years back.”

Bill Hader insists he never had any long range plans for “Barry’s” storylines.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the HBO series’ fourth and final season on Sunday, Hader told Variety when he first began the process of developing and pitching “Barry” seven years ago, he had “no idea where the series was going to end up.”
In fact, he says, Season 4 is “totally different” than his original plans. As the series wrapped, Hader revealed those final days were “very bittersweet,” but everyone was “also so tired, we were exhausted,” he said, laughing.
“Barry’s” fourth season picks up with Barry in prison after killing Janice (Paula Newsome), his mentor Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) girlfriend, in Season 1. “I had some sense of where we were headed,” said Sarah Goldberg, who plays Sally. “But I was very surprised by all the details on the way there.”

On April 16, HBO launches the fourth and final season of its hit comedy series “Barry.” Bill Hader executive produces, directs, writes and stars in the nine-time Emmy-winning show. In the season opener we see Barry Berkman (Hader) call up his acting teacher, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), from prison. Even though Gene is responsible for Barry’s arrest, it’s his forgiveness the sociopathic killer seeks first.
Season 4 kicks off with rave reviews, holding fresh at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus reads, “What began as a macabre comedy is now close to completely shorn of genuine mirth, but Bill Hader’s masterful indictment of stardom closes the curtain with one hell of an encore.” The ensemble cast includes Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Burns, Sarah Goldberg and Stephen Root. Emancipation to Exodus (wt) explores the African American struggle for freedom and opportunity “from the Civil War and end of slavery, through Reconstruction and the start of the Great Migration out of the south that began in the early 20th century,” according to a release about the film.

A few months ago, actor Anthony Carrigan – who plays NoHo Hank on the HBO dark comedy crime series Barry – said that season 4 would be the show’s final season. We didn’t doubt Carrigan, but we still needed HBO to officially confirm that Barry was wrapping up… and now that confirmation has come. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that HBO announced the eight episode fourth season of Barry is the end.
Star Bill Hader, who created Barry with Alec Berg, provided the following statement: “It’s been an amazing journey making this show, and it’s bittersweet that the story has come to its natural conclusion.“
HBO’s Amy Gravitt added: “After three masterful seasons of Barry, we are eager for viewers to see the powerful, complex and hilarious conclusion to Barry Berkman’s story. It has been a pleasure working with this immensely talented team including Bill Hader,...

Barry's reign of terror on HBO is coming to a close.
According to Variety, the series will conclude with its fourth season on the premium cabler.
The news has been heavily rumored for months and is now official. The final season premieres on April 16.
Co-creators Bill Hader and Alec Berg decided that the show would end with Season 4 when they were writing the fourth season.
"It was very much in the writing and the storytelling," Hader told the outlet of the decision.
"I mean, a lot of people after last season were like, 'Why are you doing another season? It should have just ended.'"
"But to me, there are still so many questions with the other characters, and with Barry — and there's so many things unsaid."
"What happens in Season 4 is structurally radical in some ways, but it made sense for what I think the characters needed to go through,...

Although he won Emmys in 2018 and 2019 for his work on “Barry,” Bill Hader was unfortunately kept from repeating his success at the SAG Awards by Tony Shalhoub and his “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” cast mates. Following a pandemic-induced three-year hiatus, Hader has now received his third pair of comedy actor and ensemble SAG Award nominations for the HBO series. Since Shalhoub was doubly overlooked this time and reigning back-to-back comedy actor champ Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) is out of contention, Hader’s path to individual victory is clearer than ever.

"Barry" is one of the best shows on HBO right now. Although the series has competed at the Primetime Emmy Awards in the comedy categories, it's hard to call "Barry" a "comedy" anymore. The dark character study of a truly demented man may have a few outrageously funny moments, but it's also very bleak in its worldview. On the plus side, it's allowed Bill Hader to show his true dramatic range, with a performance that is both terrifying and sympathetic.
"Barry" is hardly the first dark comedy about an assassin, but unlike others, it's not a show that pulls its punches. The series pokes fun at Hollywood, the theater industry, and actors' volatile and sometimes dramatic nature, but the satire doesn't detract from the gravity of the material. If anything, it makes everything else hit even harder — and there's no better example than how each of the characters have grown and changed.

Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, TV fans have gotten quite used to lengthy delays between seasons of their favorite shows. But even with that in mind, the wait for Barry season 3 has been a particularly excruciating one. The season 2 finale of HBO’s beloved dark comedy concluded with quite a cruel cliffhanger.
When we last left off, hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman a.k.a. Barry Block (Bill Hader) was possibly exposed as a murderer to one of the most important people in his life, acting coach Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). How Cousineau would react to such a betrayal has hung out there in the TV ether ever since May 2019. Now, some three years later, we’re about to finally see the fireworks go down.
Barry season 3 officially has a release date, trailer, episode count, and much more! Here is everything we know about the new comedy classic.

Ken Burns is scared about the future of America.
“I’m very anxious,” Burns admits. “I want my country to survive. I want to look back on all of this and go, ‘Wow, that was tough, but we made it through’ — just the way my parents and my grandparents talked to me about the Depression. I want to have this in our rearview mirror, but I don’t think that will happen for a while.”
His fear, palpable and hovering around the edges of many of the comments he makes during a long, discursive interview with Variety on a chilly January afternoon, is terrifying. After all, Burns knows of what he speaks. Over four decades and 40 documentaries, he has made the American experience his great artistic endeavor. He’s chronicled the construction of civic wonders like the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as the creation and popularization of distinctly American art...

When the HBO series “Barry” returns for Season 3, the show will benefit from the response to the breakout Season 2 episode “ronny/lily.” So revealed co-creator and executive producer Alec Berg during the show’s TCA panel on Wednesday.
“I think the response to that episode was so strong that it did open our minds a little bit to being more ambitious and expanding the scope and kind of pushing the show into new places,” Berg said in reference to the Season 2 episode that Hader co-wrote and directed. The story, which was something of a bottle episode, followed hitman Barry (played by Hader) tussling with a Taekwondo master and his daughter throughout the episode.
Hader won a Director’s Guild of America award for helming the episode and returns to the director’s chair for Season 3, but while he acknowledges that “ronny/lily” was a bit left-of-center for the series, he...

HBO‘s Emmy-winning dark comedy Barry will premiere its long-awaited third season on April 24 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt. Season 3 was delayed due to Covid-19.
In the eight-episode new season, Barry (Bill Hader) is desperate to leave his violent past behind in favor of his newfound passion. But things will get messy as he attempts to untangle himself from the world of contract killing and fully immerse himself in acting.
While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren’t the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? Season 3 finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice.
“There’s a lot left to explore,” Hader said during the show’s Ctam panel on Tuesday. “His own boneheaded way of trying to...

“Barry” fans, we have good news: The Emmy-winning black comedy series starring and co-created by Bill Hader finally has a premiere date. The third season of “Barry” will premiere on HBO Sunday, April 24 at 10:00 p.m. Et/Pt.
Season 2 launched all the way back in March, 2019 — blame Covid-19 for the three-year delay — so for those of you needing a quick catch up: Hader plays Barry Berkman, a contract killer who, after traveling to Los Angeles for a job, becomes fixated on acting as a way to escape that life of violence and murder. Things don’t work out as he hoped however, as the obligations of his murder career, not to mention Barry’s broken psyche, keep interfering with his attempt at a new start.

Shaun of the Dead famously launched with the tagline “Zom, Rom, Com”, as in “zombies”, “romance” and “comedy”. It is fair to say, that is a tough combination to get right, and Shaun of the Dead naturally nailed it.
Werewolves Within takes these themes, adding a dash of small-town Americana charm and running with them. There is a healthy chunk of “Slither” (criminally overlooked) and a little bit of The Thing style paranoia, as a scientist gets drunk as a natural reaction to what her “science stuff” has told her about the recent, grizzly deaths. Our film kicks off, with our instantly lovable Finn (Sam Richardson) heading to a small town, “Beaverfield”, shortly before a blizzard hits, to start his new job as the park ranger.

Chicago – Say the name “Ken Burns” and immediately images are evoked regarding the best of American documentaries. For three films – “The Central Park Five,” “Jackie Robinson” and the latest PBS documentary series, “Muhammad Ali” – Ken’s daughter Sarah Burns co-directed with him. Sarah talked to Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com on the three landmark films.
Sarah Burns joined her father Ken in documentary production with “The Central Park Five” in 2012. Expanding upon her undergrad thesis, the father/daughter duo – along with Sarah’s husband David McMahon – took on the case of five black youths wrongly accused of attack and rape in Central Park (a case where Donald Trump infamously took out a full page newspaper ad condemning the five before their trial). Their next collaboration was “Jackie Robinson” (2016), a four hour life story of the famous baseball pioneer. “Muhammad Ali” marks the third film for the writing/directing team.

Though “Muhammad Ali” is debuting well after “The Last Dance,” it’s hard not to think of it as a sort of spiritual prequel to ESPN’s propulsive docuseries. “The Last Dance,” which detailed the rise of Michael Jordan as both a superstar athlete and unstoppable global brand, immediately became a sensation upon its April 2020 premiere. With Jordan on board as a subject, source and producer, “The Last Dance” told the story of a man, but also the story of the time and place in which he thrived. As an ever-charismatic Jordan gave his interviews from inside a seemingly palatial home, cigar and Scotch constantly at the ready, he made it easy to understand how he’d become such a colossal figure in sports and culture alike.

As punchy as its charismatic subject, so full of twists and turns that it earns a “To be continued…” teaser after each episode, Ken Burns’ majestic four-night portrait of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali — written and co-directed by his daughter Sarah Burns and her husband David McMahon — delivers a knockout of sheer narrative power. Celebrating his crowd-pleasing bravado and achievements while never ignoring his cruel jabs and conceited taunts in and out of the ring, Muhammad Ali is a fully rounded, colorfully compelling portrait of a controversial and complex public figure described by one scholar as “a blast furnace of race pride.” (Credit: Courtesy of PBS) His eventful life touches on themes common to Burns’ work: race, faith, sports and what it means to be an American. Ali was a lightning rod for ire, vilified as “un-American” when he joined the Nation of Islam, changed his name from Cassius Clay and...

Fall festival season officially launches this week, and the programmers at the Telluride Film Festival are ready to make up for time lost last year amid the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. Muhammad Ali called himself the greatest, and filmmaker Ken Burns, director of the upcoming PBS documentary series about the boxing champion, “global icon and inspiration,” is not one to disagree.
“He comes to us, first and foremost, as the greatest athlete perhaps of all time, certainly of the 20th century, and as the greatest boxer,” Burns noted during the PBS TCA presentation Wednesday. “It is not a bad thing to die the most beloved person on your planet. And he did.”
The four-part, eight-hour series titled simply Muhammad Ali airs on consecutive nights on PBS beginning September 19. Burns, who directed the series with his daughter Sarah Burns and son-in-law David McMahon, says his take differs from previous Ali documentaries in its wide lens.

George Basil, Sarah Burns, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtain, Wayne Duvall, Harvey Guillén, Rebecca Henderson, Cheyenne Jackson, Michaela Watkins and Glenn Fleshler round out the cast.
Werewolves did well with critics and audience alike, garnering a 82% score on RottenTomatoes.com. Premiering at 270 locations, the feature grossed $223,000 and averaged $826 per screen, a decent feat in this...

The small town of Beaverfield is much like many others across the nation in 2021. There is political polarization, longtime residents suspicious of newcomers, a stark wealth gap, infidelity, gossip, and at least one guy who is either a scary loner or just wants to be left the hell alone. But in the new film Werewolves Within what really sets Beaverfield apart is their lycanthrope problem.
Based loosely on the multiplayer Ubisoft VR game of the same name, the film — which is now playing in theaters and hits Digital Rental & VOD on July 2 — is a horror-comedy whodunit where a handful of locals are locked down during a winter storm while a monster hides amongst them.

In my book, director Josh Ruben is two-for-two after his efforts on last year’s Scare Me and now with his follow-up film, the horror comedy/whodunnit Werewolves Within. Written by Mishna Wolff and based on the Ubisoft game, Werewolves Within is easily one of the most confidently crafted genre mash-ups to come along in years that delivers a ton of laughs, a compelling mystery, and an incredibly talented ensemble who all deliver an array of memorable and scene-stealing performances. I’m no psychic, but I do suspect that by the end of this year, many horror fans will be touting Werewolves Within amongst their favorite genre films of 2021.
In Werewolves Within, we’re first introduced to Finn (Sam Richardson), who is heading to his new Ranger post in the snowy, small town of Beaverfield. He’s been recently “sort of” broken up with by his girlfriend, and so Finn...

Josh Ruben (Scare Me) opens his new film Werewolves Within with what may be a first, a quote from Mr. Rogers. Being as that was a kid’s TV show and this is an R-rated adaptation of a horror video, excuse me, virtual reality game that might not seem to be sending the right message. Actually, it turns out to be extremely fitting.
Finn is a forest ranger who’s freshly arrived in the small town of Beaverfield. Beaverfield is currently in the middle of a crisis, Sam Parker’s company Midland Oil wants to run a pipeline through the town. And that has the population divided. However, that is about to become a lot less important. There’s a storm blowing in and someone,...

Questlove’s Summer of Soul (Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) will tease the specialty box office this weekend with the brilliantly reviewed Sundance Grand Jury and Audience award-winner in special engagements in two theaters to tee up a wide release on some 600 screens, and Hulu, July 2.
The film from Searchlight Pictures about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which features never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and others, will strike a chord at the El Capitan Theater in LA and the Magic Johnson AMC Harlem.
Footage from the festival in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park) held the same year as Woodstock was stored in a basement and all but forgotten for 50 years before today and this film, which was directed by musician Ahmir Khalib Thompson, known as Questlove, drummer of...

Since Summertime is the movie season for both horror flicks and rowdy comedies, how about a new addition to the growing genre subsection that’s best known as (duh) the horror-comedy? Of course, it’s changed quite a bit since Hollywood’s Golden Age in which a popular comic actor, or team, would scurry away (usually in “undercranked” fast motion) from a billowing sheet or, often, a crook in a rubber “fright mask”. As monster flicks have become more gruesome and graphic, the “comic takes” have followed suit with the comic heroes frequently covered in gore and viscera by the final fade-out. This week’s new release harkens back to the older days as it involves a “new take’ on one of the classic monsters. But, it’s also based on a fairly recent video game, one that tosses in another element: mystery. In the tradition of Ten Little Indians,...

Arriving in theaters this weekend courtesy of IFC Films is Werewolves Within, the feature film adaptation of the Ubisoft game, which was written by Mishna Wolff (the most perfect last name for this project ever) and directed by Josh Ruben. A horror comedy whodunnit centered around a werewolf that’s terrorizing the picturesque mountain town of Beaverfield, Werewolves Within stars Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, Harvey Guillén, Cheyenne Jackson, Michaela Watkins, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtin, George Basil, Sarah Burns, Wayne Duvall, Rebecca Henderson, and Glenn Fleshler.

If not for a Ubisoft logo revealing the game company as a producer of Werewolves Within, I would be wondering what the point of buying licensing rights was since this adaptation isn’t even set in medieval times. I’m not sure there’s more that sets it apart from other variations on Mafia (the deduction party game created in 1986 by Dimitry Davidoff before getting a fresh spin as Werewolf by Andrew Plotkin in 1997 and more recently appropriated into the online sensation Among Us) since I’ve never played the VR title, but it appears anyone could just write a murder mystery populated by over-the-top paranoids without worrying about already existing IP. I guess if you already own that IP anyway, though, why not utilize it for cross-media synergy?
