Michael Boyd, who revived the fortunes of the Royal Shakespeare Company as its artistic director, died today of cancer, his family announced. He was 68.
Boyd replaced RSC predecessor Adrian Noble in 2003, departing nine years later. In 2012, he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honors for services to drama. Many felt that he was being rewarded for keeping the RSC intact.
Noble came under attack from all quarters for shifting the company from its London base and for revealing plans to have the RSC theater in Stratford-upon-Avon demolished.
During his tenure, however, Boyd led the organization’s successful transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford, a $179.3 million project that won a 2011 Royal Institute of British Architects award and was shortlisted for the Riba Stirling Prize.
But it was in a rehearsal room with actors where Boyd made his mark.

There's a reason why people keep going back to "Broadchurch." The ITV series set in a fictional Dorset town has a lot of the elements that make mystery series so appealing. In stories like this, a prominent character, often a detective, arrives from out of town to help with a case, clashing with local law enforcement. In "Broadchurch," that's David Tennent's character, Alec. There's often a more seasoned local detective who thinks they know everything, and whose world gets flipped upside-down once skeletons start falling out of the closet. That's Olivia Colman's "Broadchurch" character, Ellie, to a T. There's also something cozy about mysteries set...

London’s iconic Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre has said it is facing closure because the coronavirus pandemic has had a “devastating” impact on its finances.
In a stark submission to a UK parliamentary committee, the 23-year-old institution warned that if it is unable to open its doors before September, it will require £5M ($6M) in urgent funding to avoid collapse.
“Without emergency funding and the continuation of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, we will spend down our reserves and become insolvent,” Shakespeare’s Globe said in evidence to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.
The theatre, a replica of William Shakespeare’s original 1599 Elizabethan open-air venue, said it has been unable to access Arts Council England funding due its size, while other government support schemes have not been enough to plug the financial hole blown open by coronavirus.

Rooster Teeth has just added another great actor to their already fantastic cast. David Tennent has joined Michael B. Jordan and Dakota Fanning in the upcoming Western anime series gen:lock. Noted anime voice actor Kōichi Yamadera will also be a part of the series.
Jordan will take on the role of a character named Julian Chase and this is the plot summary that was shared:
Earth’s last free society is on the losing side of a global war, and recruits a diverse team of young pilots to control the next generation of mecha—giant, weaponized robot bodies. These daring recruits will find, however, that their newfound abilities come at no small cost. As Chase leaves behind his life as a fighter pilot to become the first candidate for the program, he finds his endurance, as well as his very identity, will be tested beyond anything he ever imagined.
Tennant will play Dr.

Last fall, there were three '80s remakes in theaters: Craig Gillespie's Fright Night, Craig Brewer's Footloose and Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.'s The Thing. Out of the three, Footloose was the highest-grossing and had the best reviews. Many felt the underdog of the three was Fright Night. DreamWorks hadn't planned on their previous film, The Help, having such staying power in theaters and built up a following that ultimately ended in a Best Picture nomination and Best Supporting Actress win at the Academy Awards. The film was seemingly ignored by the moviegoing populace but found a cult audience that supported it.
Still, it seems it wasn't enough. DreamWorks has reportedly sold off the Fright Night name to a smaller studio. Their plans include making a sequel to the film (supposedly gearing up for production in Romania of all places) and having it become a "brand" ala "Tales from the Crypt...

If you get off on anticipation and you also happen to be a Doctor Who fan, these are amazing times. We-all have so much to get excited about. To wit:
1) The beginning of the next half-season, which will start in England any day now. The BBC likes to wait until the last minute to make their announcements; the show debuts in the United States, Canada and much of the rest of the world shortly thereafter. As of this writing, the season premiere is not on this Saturday’s schedule, so the August 25th rumor is likely untrue… unless the Pirates of the Caribbean movie presently in the Doctor Who slot is bunkum.
2) The exiting of the two current companions at the end of the half-season, which may or may not involve killing one or both off.
3) The Doctor Who Christmas Special, which is likely to be aired on or about...

Appropriately titled for the Eleventh Doctor in the form of Matt Smith, who explodes onto our screens! The scene opens with him clinging onto the Tardis, flying over London and him narrowly missing Big Ben. A girl speaks to Santa and talks about the crack in her wall, she can hear voices from it. She asks him to "send someone to fix it." Cue the Doctor and the Tardis; well he crash lands on the shed. "Can I have an apple?" Are his first words, he's never had cravings before. He's still "cooking" so he doesn't know who he is yet, but he still calls himself the Doctor. He hates apples now and asks for other food, "new mouth, new rules." he opts for fish fingers and custard. her name is Amelia Pond (Caitlin Blackwood) and he calls it "a name in a fairytale." She's not afraid of anything. He...
