If there were any lingering doubts that the Walt Disney Co. is now comfortable leaning into the edgier aspects of its increasingly aligned portfolio, they evaporated about 10 minutes into Tuesday’s upfront presentation when Ryan Reynolds promised that eventual Disney+ library member Deadpool & Wolverine would be a boon to advertisers targeting “testicular trauma” and “cocaine content.”
There was noticeably less cursing than during the week’s previous upfront events, at least until Jimmy Kimmel took the stage, but the embrace of Hard-r content was apparent from the pitch’s opening moments. Emma Stone, the Oscar-winning star of the Disney-produced Poor Things, was on hand to introduce Bob Iger — and, a month after he won his proxy fight with Nelson Peltz, voice her support for the recently embattled CEO.

Five-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams joined us at our Deadline Red Sea Film Festival studio this week to discuss regional change, the role cinema played in her education as an actress and her next project: FX limited series Dying For Sex, which we detailed yesterday.
The Fabelmans and Brokeback Mountain actress told us she was moved to come to the Saudi Arabian festival given the amount of societal change underway in the country and the event’s foregrounding of female creatives.
“I was moved when I read about how quickly change has come to the region,” she said. “I was curious to see what the energy was like here and the people behind that change…A festival that is featuring 38 filmmakers, that’s not a token, that’s a movement. I want to come here and listen. That was my agenda. To listen to the women and men who are working here and making cinema.

Lake Bell has taken a creative dip in the canned wine business.
The multi-hyphenate has partnered with Nomadica to write, direct and produce the brand’s first creative campaign for its new Orange offering, and has joined the Los Angeles-based team to serve as creative advisor.
Nomadica’s Orange is described as a “skin contact white wine,” meaning the skin of the grapes remain in contact with their juice during fermentation. This particular blend mixes chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner and Albariño grapes with tropical notes including pineapple and jackfruit and is complemented by fragrances of orange blossom and dried chamomile flowers. The can boasts artwork titled “Plant Melody” by visual artist Yadi Liu.
As for the campaign, which includes video and stills, Bell leaned into the skin contact theme by playing up the connection between two people. She worked alongside creative director Aiden Duffy to cast inclusive couples spanning race, age...

Brad Garrett spent years portraying Robert Barone, the less favored Barone brother on Everybody Loves Raymond. The sitcom was Garrett’s breakout role. The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Writing category has 111 submissions on the 2023 Emmys ballot, giving us six nominees this year. With the same number of nominees last year, they were “Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong), “The Dropout” (“I’m in a Hurry” by Elizabeth Meriwether), “Maid” (“Snaps” by Molly Smith Metzler), “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville), “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (“Man Handled” by Sarah Burgess), and the winner “The White Lotus” (Mike White).
What makes last year interesting is that half of the shows in the category were not nominated for Best Limited Series, something that perhaps could repeat itself to a degree with this year’s potential nominees. Another thing of note is that almost all of the top contenders this year that had the option to submit multiple episodes only went with one, preventing any possibility of vote-splitting.

“You guys, this is insane,” said “Everything Everywhere All at Once” producer Jonathan Wang as he closed his speech accepting the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures at the 2023 Producers Guild of America Awards on Saturday. “This is insane!”

Given Hollywood’s obsession with tales of great financial ruin — and the trophies many actors have collected for playing the figures behind them — we say confidently that it is only a matter of time before we get a scripted account of the still-unfolding Sam Bankman-Fried disaster.
Bankman-Fried is the wild-haired 30-year-old Silicon Valley whiz kid seen as a savior by the financial news establishment, a generous bundler for the Democrats and a deep-pocketed partner to celebrities like Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen. Most interesting? He no longer has a job.
The entrepreneur has in the past week seen a stunning collapse of his cryptocurrency platform Ftx, which at one time held a reported 50 billion in assets. Upwards of 2 billion in customer funds is missing or, according to other reports, was never on the Ftx balance sheet to begin with. There’s no bad blood between Jennifer Lawrence and Adam McKay. Surely she still likes the guy—she’s appeared in last year’s political satire “Don’t Look Up,” which was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture—but now there’s literally no “Bad Blood,” a film she was set to star in and also co-produce with McKay concerning Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos fraud.

The coalition of showrunners, TV creators and directors formed in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in June to overturn Roe v. Wade are continuing to put pressure on Hollywood studios to put safety protocols into place in abortion-hostile states. But on Sept. 28, in a full-page ad in the Power of Women issue of Variety, the still-unnamed coalition thanked those studios “for fully engaging and being thought leaders with us,” as the message reads in part. (The page was donated to the coalition by Variety‘s sales team without charge. The full letter is included below.)
The coalition’s efforts became public on July 28, when Variety reported that 411 showrunners had sent nine major studios a letter demanding that new safety protocols be established for productions in states where abortion has been outlawed. Four days later, 594 male showrunners and creators backed up that demand — and the group was soon joined by nearly 400 directors.

It’s Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after she’s won an Emmy, and Quinta Brunson’s voice is hoarse. The days of pre-award festivities leading up to the Sept. 12 ceremony were frantic, starting with Variety’s Showrunners Dinner. Then came the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony in downtown Los Angeles, the Governors Gala and Disney’s post-Emmy celebration, which spilled into the next day. Something had to give.

The kudo was presented to Kelley for his decades-long career of socially conscious work, which includes such series as “The Practice,” “Boston Public,” “Boston Legal,” “Ally McBeal,” “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” “Big Little Lies,” “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Big Sky,” among others.
“If our work matters, even a little, then that’s something,” Kelley said.
Kelley spoke from the heart to a packed room of showrunners, including top Emmy nominees and producers featured in Variety’s 2022 Producers Impact Report, at the dinner, held at Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood. Attendees included “Abbott Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson; Liz Meriwether of “The Dropout...

On Aug. 15, a coalition of showrunners, TV creators and directors sent a list of demands to studios, outlining the urgent need for abortion safety protocols for productions in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in June to overturn Roe v. Wade. That letter was the organization’s second attempt. The studios had collectively answered the first letter, which had been sent on July 28, with a response one member of the group, who spoke anonymously to Variety, called “patronizing” in an interview.
The group’s second letter more clearly detailed the medical dangers for pregnant women in states where abortion is illegal because of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision — not only for those who want an abortion, but for women whose medical care might be otherwise compromised. Ignoring the collective response, which had been issued by the Motion Picture Association, the Aug. 15 appeal was sent directly to studio presidents,...

The enduring rom-sitcom subgenre changed forever when “New Girl” walked through the front-door of 4D. On September 20, 2011, bonafide television genius Liz Meriwether — then known for the Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher-starring film “No Strings Attached” — debuted the pilot episode of what would become her breakout comedy series on Fox.
Starring Zooey Deschanel as the terminally optimistic school teacher Jessica Day — nicknamed Jess — “New Girl” told the story of six friends brought together by their chaotic lives in Los Angeles. Hannah Simone played Jess’s best friend Cece: a fiercely funny and protective model wary of her friend’s new living situation.
At the loft, Jake Johnson, who had previously appeared in indie gem “Paper Heart” as well as the Russell Brand-starring “Get Him to the Greek,” dazzled in his breakout role as Nick: a dyed-in-the-wool good guy and bartender whose low self-esteem leaves him unlucky in love. Max Greenfield...

There is nothing inherently funny about the fraud committed by Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, but in the hands of creator Elizabeth Meriwether and director Michael Showalter, the retelling of Holmes’ rise and fall elicits more than a few chuckles.
For Showalter, whose comedic background includes co-creating Wet Hot American Summer and Search Party, that dark humor was a vital part of The Dropout. “Part of what’s interesting about this story is that these people exist inside of this strange bubble that none of us really understand, where millions of dollars are being handed back and forth as if it’s no big deal,” says the director. “The stakes are strange because while, as the show continues, real people are being affected by it, there’s also a Bonfire of the Vanities situation.”

Liz Meriwether never got around to asking Amanda Seyfried if she was a “New Girl” fan. Meriwether, who created the long-running comedy, is also behind “The Dropout,” starring Seyfried. But Meriwether says she stopped talking about the show when too many people told her they didn’t even have a TV.
“I always took it to mean, ‘I have a television, but I’ve chosen not to watch your show,'” Meriwether says. “But I also got a lot of, ‘my girlfriend loves your show!'”
Turns out Seyfried did watch “New Girl,” and was a fan.
“I remember meeting Zooey [Deschanel] back when she started the show… And I remember being a big fan of hers because she got that balance between awkwardness and total deadpan truth. And you are the man of course behind the curtain,” Seyfried told Meriwether on the latest edition of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast.
