There's a moment in The Bold Type season one when the first Black social media director of Scarlet - the fictional women's magazine - slams her fist into the face of a random bigoted white man and fights back as the police rush in to handcuff her. As a viewer living in the reality where Black people are harmed or killed by police violence with startling regularity, my first thought was not fit to print online. But my second thought was just sheer incredulity, and I wasn't the only one. Aisha Dee, the actress wielding Kat Edison's fist of fury, was as disbelieving as I was.
"At first I was like, 'Well, there's no way this girl looked in the mirror and didn't see a Black girl staring back at her, because that's it.' This doesn't make any sense," the Australian actress recounted to Popsugar.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the season 5 finale of Madam Secretary.
Based on the events leading up to the season finale of CBS’ Madam Secretary, it seems like this episode would be, for the most part, smooth sailing for Tea Leoni’s Elizabeth McCord. It seems like the climate migration treaty is good to go and she is all set to make her announcement to run for President. All is good in the world, right? Not so fast. It wouldn’t be an episode of Madam Secretary without some peril to shake things up.
The episode titled “Better Angels” directed by John Murray and written by Matt Ward starts off with Peter Harriman (Skipp Sudduth) getting ready for the day as he puts his lucky vintage Rfk presidential pin on his lapel. Cut to him walking in the street and — uh oh! — he drops his lucky pin through the sewer grate,...

“The Bold Type,” Freeform’s new series following the lives of three young female workers at a women’s magazine called Scarlet, started out as an almost diametrically opposed idea: it once focused on a man. Series creator Sarah Watson told TheWrap that the show was once slated to air on NBC, where it would have focused on the Alex character (Matt Ward), a former Wall Street Journal-esque reporter who can only find work at Scarlet. “It was more of a ‘West Wing-y’, fish out of water type thing,” Watson said. But when NBC decided not to pursue it, and Freeform picked it up,...

If you’ve pored over Paul Thomas Anderson‘s filmography countless times and are looking for a new way to experience some of his best scenes, an unexpected avenue has now arrived. The Brooklyn-based band Colburn Sound Express have taken eight of his most memorable monologues, all the way up to Inherent Vice, and turned them into songs.
The band, made up of Matt Ward, Byron Gray, Ross Brunetti, and Andrew Brinkman, take on quite a range of styles in the songs, from the electronic-infused “I Drink Your Milkshake” to the 90’s rock-esque “Big Bright Shining Star” from Boogie Nights to the playful closer “I Am Many Things” from The Master. For what could’ve been a throwaway side project, it’s enjoyable enough to actually be worth a listen for any fan.
