Italian actor-turned-director Andrea Di Stefano, who helmed well-received U.S. indie thrillers “Escobar: Paradise Lost,” with Benicio del Toro, and “The Informer,” is set to make “L’Ultima Notte di Amore,” his Italian-language debut.
Universal Pictures Intl., Focus Features, and Italy’s Vision Distribution have worldwide distribution rights on the pic, which toplines Pierfrancesco Favino (Cannes competition title “Nostalgia” from Mario Martone).
The film’s title, which translates as “The Last Night of Love,” is a play on words. Amore actually refers to a police lieutenant named Franco Amore. On the night before his retirement the lieutenant is called to investigate a crime scene where his best friend and long-time partner Dino has been killed during a diamond heist. We soon find out that Amore was involved in the diamond heist and learn how the love of his wife Viviana will help him survive this fatal night.
The film’s screenplay is by Di Stefano.

Producer Lorenzo Mieli, who has brought to the screen top Italian TV series such as “The Young Pope” and “My Brilliant Friend,” is launching two new crime shows with innovative elements: “The King” and “Bang Bang Baby.”
Both stem from his bent to push boundaries of genre storytelling that is “borne from authenticity,” he says.
“The King,” which is Italy’s first prison drama, recently bowed positively in Italy on Comcast-owned Sky’s pay-tv service and also premiered internationally at the Series Mania fest.
The dark show stars Luca Zingaretti, best known as the titular character in Italy’s widely exported “Inspector Montalbano” series. He plays Bruno Testori the sometimes psychopathic director of a maximum security penitentiary located on an unspecified Italian border territory that is not subject to Italian law. There Testori, who is a mixture of good and evil, can apply his totally personal idea of justice.

Photo: ‘The Last Paradiso’/Netflix A forbidden affair between two passionate free spirits threatens to upend a small town’s social order in the new Italian Netflix film ‘The Last Paradiso’, or ‘L’ultimo paradiso’, directed and co-written by Rocco Ricciardulli. Set in the 1950s in an insular southern Italian town, co-scriptwriter Riccardo Scamarcio stars as Ciccio Paradiso, a notorious adulterer, and idealistic man. He dreams of wresting power from the few men who control the town’s wealth and of leaving to travel the world, but both are easier said than done. Ciccio’s latest affair is with Bianca (Gaia Bermani Amaral), the daughter of one such powerful man who owns most of the land on which the crops are grown. “We have to travel,” Ciccio tells Bianca. “Meet new kinds of people. We cannot die here.” They wistfully talk of escaping the town, but can they make that dream a reality?...
