The inaugural International Film Festival and Awards Macau closed on Tuesday night with a star-studded awards gala, in which Argentinean thriller The Winter, from director Emiliano Torres, was awarded the top prize. The jury, comprising of Jury President Shekhar Kapur as well as Jung Woo-Sung, Stanley Kwan, Makiko Watanabe and Giovanna Fulvi warded the runner-up Jury Prize to Adam Smith's British crime drama Trespass Against Us, which also collected the Best Actress prize for Lindsey Marshal. Best Director went to Portuguese filmmaker Marco Martins for Saint George, while his leading man Nuno Lopes was named Best Actor. Veteran Portuguese producer Paulo Branco is planning a big screen adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s An Outpost of Progress.
After backing an adaptation of Conrad’s Almayer’s Folly in 2011, made by Chantal Ackerman, Branco is now working on a film version of the novelist’s short story.
Written in 1897 and drawing on his own experience in the Congo, it deals with two European men who are assigned to a trading post in a remote part of the African jungle. But as isolation demoralises the pair and diseases weaken them, the story ultimately ends in tragedy.
The film will shoot in Angola, close to the location in which Conrad wrote the story, and will be directed by Hugo Vieira Da Silva. The cast is led by Nuno Lopes. It will be made through Leopardo Filmes and Amour Fou Vienna as a Portuguese-Austrian coproduction.

Bloodletting: Canijo’s Latest a Masterwork of Familial Upheaval
Portuguese director Joao Canijo returns with his eighth feature, Blood of My Blood, (his first fictional outing since 2007’s Misbegotten) a sprawling, all consuming portrait of one week in the life a matriarchal run familial unit in the slums outside Lisbon, and may indeed be his masterpiece. Inevitably, there’s no denying a comparison of technique with Altman and Mike Leigh (Canijo spent two years developing the characters with the actors via a series of workshops as Leigh does), but the film stands quite firmly as an often uncomfortable, unpleasant, and always fascinating family saga that would, in a fair world, finally open up the English speaking market to Canijo’s previous directorial efforts, which date back to the early 80s.
In Padre Cruz, a slum on the edge of Lisbon, the Fialho clan, whose workable, but makeshift daily existence is about to be severely shaken.

Tiff announced their last batch of titles for their primo Gala and Special Presentation events and it comes as no surprise that we’ve got ourselves several future Venice (Bad 25, Love is All You Need, Spring Breakers, Passion and The Master) and left over Cannes titles (White Elephant, On The Road, The Paperboy) set for some Special Presentation spots, but it’s the World Premieres that Tonrot have managed to lasso that have got out attention. First up in the trio of Gala screenings announced, it’s their Closing Night Film in Song for Marion which may do wonders for both the fest and the title itself — as it may be this year’s The King’s Speech type. What Maisie Knew, Arthur Newman, Greetings from Tim Buckley and after a long post-production phase Nick Cassavetes’ Yellow (see pic above) are all repping the new wave of U.S...

As if the line-up couldn’t get any better, Toronto International Film Festival have went ahead with what looks to be their final announcement of premieres.
