The 1986 fantasy film “Highlander” is getting the Hollywood reboot treatment with “John Wick’s” Chad Stahelski set to direct for Lionsgate.
The remake has been in the works since 2008 and previously had Justin Lin, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan attached to direct, with Stahelski now officially taking the lead.
“I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school,” Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter, who reported the news first. “Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”
The film will be produced by Neal H. Moritz and Peter Davis. The studio is currently looking for a writer to pen the script.

According to our friends at Latino-Review, Guardians of the Galaxy co-star Dave Bautista has joined Summit Entertainment's Highlander remake. The site says that he will be taking on the role of the Kurgan, a brutal barbarian who was in the original 1986 film.
The Kurgan is the final villain that the immortal swordsman, Connor MacLeod, must face after taking on all of the other immortals. There's still no word on who will be playing Connor; Ryan Reynolds was attached to it at one point, but dropped out.
The part of the Kurgan was previously played by Clancy Brown, who was awesome in the role. The director of the upcoming remake, Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, talked about casting the characters in the film, saying:
“We have to find that younger emerging guy, and surround him with a strong Kurgan, and an actor who shines as Ramirez the way Connery did in that film.

Summit Entertainment is still looking to get their remake of Highlander off the ground and into production. The movie has been in development for years, and now they are looking to cast Tom Cruise in the role of the mentor, Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, who was previously played by Sean Connery.
The news comes from The Wrap, who says the interest is only one-sided for now, as Cruise is completely focused on Mission: Impossible 5 at the moment. He definitely shouldn't be focussing on other things while he's hanging outside of an airplane while in midair.
Even though this would be a co-starring role, the studio is willing beef it up to accommodate the actor if he wanted a bigger part. Cruise has taken smaller roles in the past, so I think as long as the character is interesting to him, it's something he might take on without having to enlarge the role.

Well, you can't fault them for aiming high.
Even though it's unlikely to go anywhere, The Wrap is reporting that the producers of the Highlander remake are trying to court none other than Tom Cruise to play the mentor role in the film. In the original movie, the character was named Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez and was played by a certain iconic Scot named Sean Connery. Connery was quite a "get" for that production, though it was probably made easier thanks to the fact that his career had plateaued by the early to mid-1980s.
Cruise's career, however, has been on an upswing ever since Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol. That film did fantastic numbers, revived the franchise, and brought Cruise back into the A-list. Perhaps if the Highlander people had reached out to him in the middle of his couch-jumping, public relations downward spiral a few years back they could've nabbed him for this,...

Summit Entertainment has set Cedric Nicolas-Troyan to direct its remake of Highlander, reports Deadline. This marks his directorial debut after working as a visual effects supervisor and second unit director on Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron starrer Snow White And The Huntsman. The original film told of an immortal Highlander called Connor McLeod (played originally by Christopher Lambert) and his journey through the years, from time with his mentor Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery) and his beloved Heather (Beattie Edney), to his present location as an antiques dealer in New York, confronting other immortals, and battling for the "Prize" of mortality. Clancy Brown played the powerful Kurgan Victor Kruger who McLeod is destined to meet in a final showdown.

When the opening moments of a film see Sean Connery explain through voiceover that he is part of a band of immortals born at the dawn of time, immortals that are locked in battle with one another until only one remains, you know that you’re in for something special. When this opening monologue is followed immediately by a title sequence to the tune of Queen’s ‘Princes of the Universe’ and an opening sequence that cross-cuts between a contemporary wrestling match and a Medieval Scottish battle one begins to sense the sort of cinematic lunacy that is to follow.
You’re watching Highlander, the tale of the immortal Connor ‘The Highlander’ MacLeod’s present and past lives. Rarely are films able to assume plots of such bafflingly Metal proportions; the fact that these immortals can only die through being beheaded reinforces the distinct possibility that the film’s plot could,...

I Shot Him 6 Times! The Duke Of New York Is A-#1!
Carpenter’s scraggly ass decided to torture L.A. this time as Snake is once again captured/called in by the United States government to recover a potential doomsday device from Los Angeles, now an autonomous island where undesirables are deported. Raw Leiba, who had a minor role in last year’s Conan the Barbarian remake and a small part on HBO’s Game of Thrones, has suddenly become attached to two slow-developing but high-profile projects. The Geek Files has heard rumors that the actor and stuntman will appear in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Highlander remake and Marvel Studios’ Black Panther.
The Highlander project has Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, but other casting appears to have gone quiet since. Vinnie Jones and Ray Stevenson have been rumored to be in the mix for the character Kurgan (played by Clancy Brown in the 1986 original), so Geek Files speculates Leiba could play Sean Connery’s role, the immortal Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, but given Leiba’s low profile and stunt background, he seems more suited for a smaller part. The actor’s reps have not commented on his casting either way.

A couple of months back, Summit Entertainment teased the idea of bringing back the Highlander series to the big screen. Now it isn’t just an idea, it is an actual project. At first Fast Five director Justin Lin was tapped to direct the Highlander reboot, but has since then walked away to direct more Fast and Furious sequels Now Summit Entertainment has confirmation that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will be the one to helm the director’s chair for the reboot.
Summit Entertainment has made the following statement:
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will direct Summit Entertainment’s re-imagination of the cult film Highlander co-financed by Rcr Media Group. Summit’s Highlander is written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Neal H. Mortiz and Peter Davis will produce the project along with Enrique López Lavigne and Belen Atienza. Rcr Media Group’s principles Rui Costa Reis and Eliad Josephson will executive produce the film.

The reboot of Highlander, which Summit has been working on with various degrees of enthusiasm for the past couple years, is getting a new director. Justin Lin was signed to make the film, but walked [1] not long ago. Now Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who directed 28 Weeks Later and now, four years later, has Intruders opening at Tiff, is in talks with Summit to direct the remake. Update: This deal has been finalized; the press release from Summit has been added below. Deadline [2] says that Summit is still working with the script drafted by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man), which was polished by Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight). That's what Justin Lin was going to direct when he was attached to the project before bailing to do another Fast/Furious movie for Universal. There aren't many more details on the new version of the 1986 film, which was directed by Russell Mulcahy and...

Justin Lin and his publicist are working overtime this week. The director has been doing a few interviews, and in the process dropping details [1] about how he's still working on Terminator 5, the fact that he's got a sequence already prepped [2] for Fast Six (or whatever it will be called) and the "ok, whatever" revelation that he turned down directorial duties on the fifth Die Hard film. Now the latest info drop is that Lin has vacated the director's chair on the planned remake [3] of Highlander. THR [4] reports that Summit's reboot of the 1986 cult film will have to find a new helmer, as the success of Fast Five led to job offers for Lin that are a lot more interesting than Highlander. (You make the call: T5 over Highlander?) His schedule filled up, so this week he made the call to bow out of the conflict between sword-wielding, decapitation-happy immortals.

Yes, Summit Entertainment are finally rebooting Highlander!

The protagonist (Connor Macleod) was played by Christopher Lambert in the original 1986 version with Sean Connery playing mentor and fellow immortal, Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez. Clancy Brown also starred as the fantastically wicked (and incredibly cheesy) barbarian – The Kurgan.

Latest: Actor Mickey Rourke has slammed the police officer who arrested him for driving under the influence last year, insisting the cop is "unfit for duty".
The Angel Heart star was pulled over by Miami Beach, Florida police in November after they reportedly spotted him weaving all over the road on his Vespa scooter.
Rourke was initially booked for driving under the influence (Dui), but authorities later admitted the breathalyzer test - which the actor failed during his arrest - was incorrect.
A second machine used later showed Rourke was just under the legal limit, and the Dui charge is expected to be officially dropped by Miami Beach's District Attorney.
On Friday, Rourke pleaded guilty to another charge of reckless driving and was sentenced to six months' probation, community service and ordered to pay a fine.
But Rourke is still angry about the embarrassing way arresting officer Peter Socarras treated him at the time of the incident.
He rants, "I'm friends with most cops in the city and they told me the guy who got me isn't even liked by his colleagues. He's a 400-pound f**k unfit for duty.
"I said to him: 'F**k you, I'm not drunk.' I guess he didn't like that. They started on me at the station with the pencil in front of my eyes. Then they gave me the breath thing, like, seven times. And it always came out under the limit. I had two drinks hours before they stopped me."
However, Juan Sanchez, a spokesman for Miami Beach Police Department, has defended the cop's conduct, saying: "I'm sorry that's how he (Rourke) feels about an officer who's just doing his job."...
