James McAvoy (Filth) and Clarke Peters (The Wire) have joined the cast of His Dark Materials, the BBC’s adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy epic, written by Jack Thorne (Skins).
McAvoy will play aristocratic explorer Lord Asriel, taking on the role played by Daniel Craig in the 2007 feature The Golden Compass.
Asriel is father to protagonist Lyra (Logan’s Dafne Keen), an orphan who lives in a parallel universe. Peters will play the master who raises Lyra, with both actors starting work on the series later this month.

Friday, in a piece for the Wall Street Journal, Tim Marchman wrote an article examining the recent release of Chris Irving’s book Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origins of American Comics. From this he extracts a scathing critique of the comic book industry, claiming that the market doesn’t show nearly the strength in sales that it should, especially in the wake of the recent success of “The Avengers” film.
While he rightly contends that super-hero comics are not reaching the same type of mass audience as the bevy of super-hero films that have hit movie theaters in the last several years, he goes on to levy criticism at the comic book industry as a whole for its failure to duplicate the same sort of numbers that it did in the market heyday of the 1990s and early millennium.

No surprise there. It goes without saying that James Cameron's sci-fi spectacle Avatar has the potential to clean house at the 8th Annual Ves Awards for its breath taking visuals by the acclaimed Weta Digital. The animated "Coraline," another movie released in 3D, followed with four nominations.
New Zealand-based Weta Digital, which worked on "Avatar," led the company noms with nine.
