Real-time thriller “Nightsleeper” has been acquired by French network TF1.
Starring Alexandra Roach (“The Light in the Hall”) and Joe Cole (“Gangs of London”), the six-episode thriller unfolds in real-time as a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London is hacked and events rapidly escalate on board, causing a government agency to frantically intervene.
“Can two people who’ve never met, one on the train and one not, work together to save the lives of its disparate group of passengers as the Heart of Britain overnight service hurtles towards what might quite literally be its final destination?” reads the logline.
The series, which is produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, was written by “Murdered For Being Different” scribe Nick Leather with Laura Grace writing episodes 4 and 5. It’s directed by Jamie Magnus Stone (“Doctor Who”) and John Hayes (“Dublin Murders”).
It will air in the U.

“Peaky Blinders” breakout Joe Cole enjoyed “little moments of levity” in his upcoming show “Nightsleeper.”
“I play a lot of serious, moody characters. But I read this role and went: ‘This is close to me as a person.’ I could be free and use my life experience, everything I have been through. I try to have fun in life and bring it to the parts I play. I haven’t always been able to do it, because I am usually killing people or stabbing them,” he tells Variety.
These days, Cole wants to be “stimulated and challenged” as an actor.
“I am working on a film now, these are Russian filmmakers and they tell dark stories, but they do it with levity. They don’t relentlessly bang you on the head. The story itself is grim enough, so find the humor!,” he notes, also mentioning a recent turn in “A Small Light” about Miep Gies,...

The team behind Netflix’s hit Fool Me Once is reuniting for a new series — at a different streamer.
Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered Lazarus, a limited series from Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst. The drama will star Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & the Six) as a forensic psychologist who returns home after his father’s suicide and becomes entangled in a set of cold case murders. Bill Nighy, playing the lead character’s late father, and Alexandra Roach, as Claflin’s sister, also star.
Lazarus is based on an original idea from best-selling author Coben and Brocklehurst, who are writing the series together. The limited series will be Coben’s second at Prime Video, which ran (and then canceled) Shelter last year.
“Lazarus is a gripping series that captures your attention from the very beginning,” said Heather Curtis, current series executive, pan-English scripted SVOD TV at Amazon MGM Studios.

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

Forget the fear of flying. In the upcoming six-episode thriller “Nightsleeper,” the real danger awaits on a train travelling from Glasgow to London.
“When we were developing the show, we got all these experts in one room and asked: ‘How do you hack a train?’ An hour later, they said: ‘This is scary. We could easily do it now, between ourselves’,” says writer Nick Leather.
“We will do for trains what ‘Jaws’ did for sharks.”
Produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films and set to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early 2024, “Nightsleeper” is directed by Jamie Magnus Stone and John Hayes.
While Abby Aysgarth (Alexandra Roach) at the U..K’s National Cyber Security Centre is trying her best to stop the train, some remaining passengers also join forces – including off-duty cop Joe Roag (“Peaky Blinders” actor Joe Cole). But they only have six hours and one satellite phone.

Getting caught up in a deadly kidnapping, being torn away from your loved ones and forced into witness protection, tracking down a serial killer of vulnerable young girls… none of the above exactly scream ‘Lol’, and yet they’ve all become the subject of British crime comedy-dramas in recent years. The “you’ve got to laugh” mentality is clearly in our national DNA, no matter how bleak the circumstances.
Attracting huge names in comedy, from Matt Berry, Stephen Merchant, James Corden and Joanna Scanlan, to the brilliant Gbemisola Ikumelo, Emer Kenny, Kerry Howard, and created by the writers behind People Just Do Nothing, Peep Show, Succession and more, here are some of the best darkly funny crime comedy series of recent years.

The BBC is making a feature-length drama about the remarkable true story of one of the world’s first medical trials for the drug that became Viagra, which once again pairs It’s A Sin’s Russell T. Davies with Nicola Shindler.
Shindler’s Quay Street and Welsh indie Boom are behind Men Up, starring the likes of Iwan Rheon, Aneurin Barnard, Alexandra Roach and Steffan Rhodri (House of the Dragon), and penned by Matthew Barry. Davies and Shindler are EPs.
Years before the little blue pill changed the lives for millions across the globe, a group of ordinary middle-aged Welsh men underwent the extraordinary, taking part in one of the first clinical trials for an unknown drug which later became Viagra. This group of men had one thing in common: impotency, and were living their lives drowned in shame and silence before being offered a lifeline.

Have British crime dramas been boiled down to a formula? Take a forbidding rural location, populate it with miserable, suspicious people, and explore some kind of tragic but enigmatic crime that took place years in the past. It’s a winning framework that has formed the basis of many of the UK’s best recent TV series – as well as a lot of generic dross. Channel 4’s bleak new addition to the genre, the Wales-set mystery The Light in the Hall (Welsh title Y Golau), feels closer to this latter category.
The story picks up 18 years after Ela, a teenager, suddenly went missing. A local gardener, Joe Thomas (played by Misfits and Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon), confessed to her murder at the time but was unable, or unwilling, to recall some details of the crime; a body was never found. Never have truer words been said, and nor have they fitted better than to The Kid Who Would Be King. Joe Cornish (writer and director) started his career, doing silly skits with Star Wars figures, back when that was cutting-edge comedy. He went on to make Attack the Block, the interesting sci-fi action film, about an inner-city housing estate being attacked by extra-terrestrial monsters. It was dripping with both alien blood and social commentary.

The “Love Island” broadcaster has been facing intense pressure to call time early on the police drama — which has been airing every night this week — after a Guardian investigation yielded a slew of sexual misconduct, harassment and bullying claims against Clarke. The outlet spoke with 20 women who had worked with the actor in a professional setting.
“ITV has a zero tolerance policy to bullying, harassment and victimisation and robust procedures in place to investigate and deal with any complaints. We strongly believe that everyone deserves to work in a supportive and safe environment,” reads a statement shared with Variety.

Produced by Peaky Blinders co-producer Tiger Aspect, Clarke plays surveillance detective, DC Martin King, who sets up an observation post in the home of single mum and secret voyeur, Zoe Sterling, played by Alexandra Roach (Black Mirror).
Sterling’s windows command a panoramic view of Westbury Square, Manchester, and provides a direct sightline into the home of beloved missing school teacher, Gemma Hillman (Amy Wren). Hillman shares the home with her boyfriend and prime suspect, Greg Sullivan, played by Fehinti Balogu.
Rounding out the cast are Catherine Tyldesley (Scarborough), Bronagh Waugh (The Fall), Sarah Niles (Trust Me), Shannon Murray (Get Even), Phil Davis (Whitechapel) Ian Puleston-Davies (Tin Star), Dominic Allburn (Jack Irish: Dead Point), Marcus Garvey (Broadchurch), Carlyss Peer...

Looking back at Snow White and the Huntsman, I remember liking it but the movie itself was overshadowed by the drama behind the scenes. This may be one reason I was surprised with the announcement of The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Unsurprisingly though, Kristen Stewart is not part of this one… but does it manage to deliver without Snow White’s presence?
This time, The Huntsman is somewhat of a prequel as well as a sequel to the first film. We see Ravenna (Charlize Theron) up to no good, but also the introduction of Freya (Emily Brunt) her sister. When Freya’s heart is broken her resultant transformation to the Ice Queen brings about the introduction of...

Fairy Tales are also cautionary tales, a way to teach morals and values to children at a time when the majority of the populace couldn’t read or write. It wasn’t until the last four centuries or so when we began writing it all down and solidifying the variations. Even today, people take the classics and reinterpret them for new generations, bringing in modern themes and issues, making them more relevant.
The cautionary tale to take from The Huntsman: Winter’s War is that you have to have something interesting to say. The preceding film, Snow White and the Huntsman, gave us a revisionist Snow White in the form of plucky Kristen Stewart, a modern day action heroine that made her a proactive player in the classic German tale.

In my first year of reviewing movies I ranked Snow White and the Huntsman as the ninth worst movie of 2012 and by that time news had come out that neither star Kristen Stewart nor director Rupert Shane would be returning for the sequel, and I predicted that it would probably be a better movie. I was right, The Huntsman: Winter’s War is a better movie, and it still isn’t a very good movie. Freed from trying to retell a more famous story, there are some interesting choices made in the script— but it’s all overwhelmed by the crushing clichés of high fantasy. At its lowest points Huntsman is the slickest Lord of the Rings fan-film you’ve ever seen; at its highest it’s a kind of cute romantic comedy starring Nick Frost.

Full disclosure: I have not seen Snow White and the Huntsman. I don't think it would have helped. In fact, I think this movie would have benefited from being a stand alone film because it would have been its own mythology and not have the anchor around its neck that I could feel in this movie.
The Huntsman: Winter's War is a unique sequel in that it is a prequel sequel. A presqueal, if you will. The movie shows us how Eric (Chris Hemsworth), the Huntsman came to be such a badass warrior by fighting in the Ice Queen's (Emily Blunt) army called …The Huntsmen! We also meet Eric's true love, Sara (Jessica Chastain). The two best warriors in her majesty's service. Until they commit the greatest sin, love!
Eric is banished, and the fate of Sara is a plot twist that is spoiled in the trailer. Cut...

The Bottom Line (1 minute review)
Let’s get this prequel/sequel stuff out of the way. “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” is both a prequel and a sequel to the 2012 “Snow White and the Huntsman.” It gets confusing if you try to figure it out, so you are better off not thinking about it and just enjoy the movie. And there’s a lot to enjoy.
The acting is uniformly strong, the production value is excellent from the visual effects to the costumes to the cinematography. Despite the somewhat confusing timeline, the story is mostly creative with a few surprises that actually move the story forward while also justifying characters’ choices that may seem unusual.
The “prequel” part of the movie begins with Huntsman Eric (Chris Hemsworth) and fellow Huntsperson Sara (Jessica Chastain) as children who are abducted by the recently evil Queen Freya (Emily Blunt) and endure a “Hunger Games” like training montage.

Despite a fine performance from Emily Blunt, the follow-up to Snow White and the Huntsman offers cold comfort
Here’s the follow-up to 2012’s SFX whimsy-cake Snow White and the Huntsman, bookending that film’s narrative with both a backstory and a continuation – which makes it, I suppose, a “sprequel”. Emily Blunt emerges with honour, offering more nuance than the film deserves, as Freya, tragic sister to Charlize Theron’s wicked witch queen. Turning her back on love, Freya repairs to the northern wastes to rule a land of snow and ice, and presumably to lie low in case Disney’s lawyers question the resemblance to Frozen. Playing squeeze to Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman, Jessica Chastain dons a leather jerkin and wields a bow and arrow – solemnly channelling a touch of Red Sonja, for you older sword-and-sorcery fans. There are many offensive things about this insipid confection, foremost among them the fact that Nick Frost,...

It’s a prequel and a sequel! It’s got girl powerrr and lady-hating! It’s a mashup of Lord of the Rings and Frozen! It’s all these things, and less. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): wasn’t crazy about the first film

It’s a prequel and a sequel! It’s full of girl powerrr and reflexive lady-hating! It’s a parody mashup of Lord of the Rings with Frozen and it’s a longform conceptual fashion shoot! The Huntsman: Winter’s War is all these things, and more, and sometimes less. It’s a story about the horror of child soldiers without the horror. It’s a love-conquers-all story with almost no genuine emotional content at all. It’s a comedy without any actual humor. It’s a movie in which,...

Having enjoyed an entertaining chat with actors Rob Brydon and Nick Frost – it was time to meet another of the affable dwarves from The Huntsman: Winter’s War, this time in the form of Welsh performer Alexandra Roach. Roach was in high spirits as she discussed what attracted her to the role, and the enjoyment

This morning, we attended the UK press conference for the sequel /spin-off to Snow White and the Huntsman, The Huntsman: Winter’s War. It was a fabulous lineup this morning as Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt, Nick Frost, Rob Brydon and Alexandra Roach were all in attendance to discuss the movie at length with one another. Here's Murtada deconstructing the trailer for the ridiculously titled The Huntsman Winters War.
Yes
- The actresses of course. Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Charlize Theron = a formidable trio.
- Chastain as a the Warrior. Yes!
- Blunt and Theron as dueling evil sisters. Yes again! May campiness rule the day.
- The oversize gestures of Blunt and Theron as they wreak havoc. Give me more!
- So it’s obviously all about the actresses. Oh and the possibility of a shirtless Chris Hemsworth.
No
- From the producer of Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland….. Nooooooo.
- Hemsworth gets top billing?? I guess he's The Hunstman.
- The CGI doesn't look very convincing.
- “Men have forgotten what it means to be afraid. We will bring fear”. Hmmm cheesy line. It could be fun if the tone is over the top campy. The trailer is playing it straight so we are dubious.

One year on and we're still not over Utopia getting axed - and neither is series star Alexandra Roach.
Roach played Becky in both series of Channel 4's cult drama and told Digital Spy that the show "was, and is, something really special" for her.
Why there must be Utopia series 3 - and why you have to watch it
"I remember reading that script and cancelling a holiday to make the audition," she said. "I rang my agent and said, 'Get me in that room - I need to be there'.
"I did it, and then they called me back three or four times. It was one of the longest audition processes ever - but I was so up for it, because I just thought it was something completely unique and brilliant, and I needed to be part of it.

No Offence made its mark as one of the standout drama series of 2015 - not least for having three strong female characters at the fore.
It was the characters that attracted actress Alexandra Roach to the project, she told Digital Spy.
"In this day and age, it shouldn't be a novelty to have three female leads, but it really was - and the characters are so different. Not your average leading ladies."
Roach plays the shy but brilliant DS Joy Freers on the Channel 4 series, starring opposite Joanna Scanlan as the formidable Di Viv Deering and Elaine Cassidy as passionate DC Dinah Kowalska.
"There's Joanna, who is a bit of a powerhouse," she said. "What I loved about reading that character is that there's no apologies for who she is or how she is, and you don't normally get that with leading ladies.
"Then there's my character, who's a...

No Offence will be returning for a second series.
The Channel 4 police procedural has been commissioned for an eight-episode run in 2016.
From Paul Abbott, No Offence stars Joanna Scanlan, Elaine Cassidy, Alexandra Roach, Will Mellor and Paul Ritter.
The second series will see the team investigating a new case involving warring crime families.
"No Offence is not just unlike any other cop show on TV. It's unlike any other show on TV, and we are delighted to announce its return next year," Channel 4's head of drama Piers Wenger said.
"Paul and the cast have set the bar high in terms of thrills, spills and belly laughs this year, and we can't wait to see where they go in series two."
The first series comes to an end tonight, with the finale airing on Channel 4 at 9pm.

Testament Of Youth stars Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington with director James Kent Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
James Kent follows up on the Testament Of Youth, based on Vera Brittain's World War I memoir, the day of Interview Magazine's première, on and off the red carpet with Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington. We connect Helen Mirren's costume designer, Consolata Boyle, with a Coco Chanel style dictum, he confides what getting Joanna Scanlan meant to him, turning Alicia from Ava in Alex Garland's Ex Machina into Vera, and coming on board with David Heyman, the producer of Paddington, Gravity, and the Harry Potter films.
Roland Leighton (Kit Harington) Edward Brittain (Taron Egerton) Vera (Alicia Vikander): "Loving it with the boys."
The ensemble, including Miranda Richardson, Emily Watson, Taron Egerton, Colin Morgan, Dominic West, Jonathan Bailey and Alexandra Roach contributes mightily to the impact Brittain's story continues to have.

Testament of Youth director James Kent on Vera Brittain: "She was hungry for literature, hungry to see particularly women writers…" Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
At high noon, before Interview Magazine's New York premiere of Sony Pictures Classics’ Testament Of Youth, starring Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington with Emily Watson, Dominic West, Joanna Scanlan, Taron Egerton, Miranda Richardson, Colin Morgan, Jonathan Bailey and Alexandra Roach, I met up with director James Kent for a conversation on his debut feature film at the Crosby Street Hotel.
BBC Films and Heyday Films' producers David Heyman and Rosie Alison teamed up with Michael Barker and Tom Bernard co-founders of Spc to bring Vera Brittain's classic pacifist memoir to the Us.
Kit Harington (Roland) Alicia Vikander (Vera): "It is about experience. As Roland says to Vera early on when they're beginning to fall in love."

Congratulations to Jules O'Dwyer and her loveable border collie Matisse who won Britain's Got Talent last night (May 31). We must admit we came over a tad teary-eyed when Matisse's three-legged collie companion Skippy made his debut in their final act.
Last night's final prompted us to look back at all eight winners from the ITV talent show to see how they faired after their victories.
From Collabro to Pudsey the dog - which acts have had the most success post-bgt? Here's our ranking below:
1. Paul Potts
Paul Potts stunned the judges, audience and viewers of Bgt alike with his breathtaking rendition of 'Nessun Dorma' on the ITV talent show's first run in 2007. His audition became a YouTube sensation and was later confirmed as the fourth most viewed YouTube video in the UK.
Following his transition from Carphone Warehouse salesman to Bgt winner, Potts released his debut album One Chance...

Sam Claflin will reprise his role of William, the childhood best friend of Snow White, in the upcoming "The Huntsman" at Universal Pictures.
A prequel/spin-off to the 2012 fantasy epic "Snow White and the Huntsman," this one puts the focus on Chris Hemsworth's titular character and how his life first intersected with the evil Queen.
Charlize Theron is returning as Queen Ravenna, while Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, Nick Frost, Rob Brydon, Alexandra Roach and Sheridan Smith are also onboard.
Claflin appearance will only be a small supporting one this time out. Kristen Stewart is not expected to return as Snow White with the character unlikely to be a part of the film.
Cedric Nicolas-Troyan will direct from a script by Frank Darabont, Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Joe Roth will produce.
That isn't the only project Claflin is involved in today though. It has just been announced that the actor will topline "Robin Friday,...

A double dose of Sam Claflin news this fine Friday, and appropriately one of the stories is Friday-related. The actor will be playing Robin Friday, the ill-starred but supremely louche Reading and Cardiff striker, in the long-gestating film of his life. His agent has been busy because Claflin has also signed on to return for Snow White And The Huntsman sequel, The Huntsman, in the role of Snow White’s love interest, William. There’s no danger he’ll mix the two up and scythe down Snow White with a two-footed lunge, largely because Kristen Stewart is unlikely to return as the mirror-bothering princess. Instead Claflin, who’s earmarked for a small supporting role, will be joined by franchise newbies Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt, with Charlize Theron back as Queen Ravenna. Nick Frost, Rob Brydon, Alexandra Roach and Sheridan Smith are also aboard.More intriguing is the Friday story.

The May 1 release of Avengers: Age of Ultron marks the "official" start of the 2015 Summer Movie Season and with that in mind, it's only appropriate to offer up a look forward at what's ahead over the next four months. What is ahead over the next four monthsc Well, a lot of movies that cost a lot of money with a few smaller features mixed in for good measure, and as much as some of us may lament the fact studios have become so franchise focused, it's hard not to admit a desire to see some of these bigger features. As a means of whittling down the flock of films arriving over the next several months I've chosen to take a look at my 20 most anticipated, which does mean there are bound to be some titles I probably ought to mention, but didn't make the list for a variety of reasons.

If you haven't yet seen Ex Machina get out there and do so as it expands even further this weekend. Along with an overall great film you'll also get to see a great performance from Alicia Vikander whose name first came to most people's attention with A Royal Affair a couple years later, but after Ex Machina and this summer's Testament of Youth her stock is likely to continue to rise and, who knows, maybe an Oscar nomination in the near future. Today we have a new trailer for the latter film I mentioned there, Testament of Youth, a World War I feature adapted from the memoir by Vera Brittain played here by one Alicia Vikander opposite Kit Harrington ("Game of Thrones"). Here's the plot: Vera, irrepressible, intelligent and free-minded, overcomes the prejudices of her family and hometown, to win a scholarship to Oxford. With everything to live for, she...
