Jenna Coleman had “avoided” playing a detective – until she was approached about playing rookie cop Ember Manning in a scenic lake town in Lancashire in North West England in BBC Studios’ The Jetty from creator and writer Cat Jones and Firebird Pictures.
“What appealed to me was that the character of Ember was completely there on page one,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Also, it’s a crime thriller, but it’s wrapped up in such a human, emotive, and poetic piece. It is crafted so it has all of the great things of a crime thriller – turning the page and having all of the beats. But it’s also such a feminine piece that really explores relationships and provokes. It has all sorts of blurred boundaries and is asking a lot of uncomfortable questions without fully answering them.”

“Genius: MLK/X” is the fourth installment in National Geographic’s anthology series, but it’s the first one to focus on two individuals in a single season. After the first three seasons centered on Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso and Aretha Franklin, respectively, Season 4 chronicles the parallel lives of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Malcolm X (Aaron Pierre). The civil rights icons only met once in real life, prompting producers to find a way in to tell a unified story.

Towering civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, both assassinated at the age of 39, met briefly on March 26, 1964 at the U.S. Capitol, where they were both present in support of the passage of the Civil Rights Act. While their paths intersected only once before their untimely deaths, the Nat Geo series “Genius: MLK/X” presents their extraordinary lives in tandem, despite their famously opposing ideologies.

At some point in middle school or high school, most people were exposed to two different types of rudimentary essay-writing. There’s the five-paragraph essay, that goes, intro/thesis-body-body-body-conclusion. And there’s the compare-and-contrast essay, in which you start with two seemingly opposed subjects and unify them by juxtaposing the ways they’re different, but also the ways in which they’re similar. From a distance of decades it’s easy to mock both essay structures, but they’re both incredibly useful ways of teaching young writers to approach complicated topics.
I’m not sure if the new season of National Geographic’s Genius anthology is the most ambitious compare-and-contrast essay every written, but MLK/X is at least a generally well-intentioned illustration of both pros and cons of the format.

"What you're doing is just. Never question that." National Geographic has unveiled a full trailer for their latest "Genius" offering called Genius: MLK/X, arriving for streaming at the start of February for Black History Month. The "Genius" series started in 2017 with a focus on Albert Einstein, and also profiled Pablo Picasso and Aretha Franklin, before this current season about these two prolific figures. It centers on the formative years, accomplishments, dueling philosophies and personal relationships of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X - played by Kelvin Harrison, Jr. and Aaron Pierre, respectively. Episodes will explore the moments between the monumental historical events we've come to know and shine a light on how each leader and those closest to them questioned their resolve and decisions as they navigated the rigors of balancing a public persona with a private life. In real life, Black civil rights pioneers Martin Luther King and Malcolm X met only once, briefly, in Washington, D.C., in 1964 as both attended a Senate debate.
And the trailer for Disney’s Genius: MLK/X docuseries, which dropped Thursday, opens with that chance Capitol Hill encounter that foreshadowed their dueling movements and personalities.
“We meet at last,” Malcolm X declares as the two black leaders shake hands, while in those years from the church pulpit, prison cells and elsewhere they worked to advance racial equality with competing movements: King favoring nonviolent activism as part of his civil rights struggle, and Muslim leader Malcolm X opting for Black empowerment and self-determination to battle against white supremacy.
Ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Disney plans two episodes to bow weekly on National Geographic from Feb. 1, and to then stream on Disney+ and Hulu the day after.

In the new Apple TV+ comedy noir series “High Desert,” Patricia Arquette and Matt Dillon play an off-and-on again couple so naturally that it seems like they must have starred together in some iconic 1990s indie movie. Surprisingly, they haven’t, but the off-kilter, sun-baked menace of films like Arquette starrers “True Romance” and “Lost Highway” permeates the new series, which is peopled with what Arquette calls “wild and weird creatures” in an environment that alternates between arid beauty and strip mall desolation.
In “High Desert,” Arquette’s methadone-dependent, perennial wild child Peggy Newman could not be more different than her buttoned-up “Severance” character Harmony Cobel, whether she’s piloting a dune buggy around the desert, swinging from a chandelier in a Pioneertown Old West show or getting mixed up with another half-baked scam. Peggy, who recently lost her mother, needs to raise money to stay in their house. She...

Patricia Arquette is an Emmy favorite nowadays, and she’s not even “High Desert’s” most decorated performer. Between her, Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond”), Rupert Friend (“Homeland”) and Bernadette Peters (“Ally McBeal”), the main cast of Apple TV+’s upcoming comedy series from “Miss Congeniality” writer Katie Ford and creative partners Nancy Fichman and Jennifer Hoppe-House has a total of 16 acting nominations and five wins.
Set in Yucca Valley, California, “High Desert” follows addict and former dealer Peggy Newman (Arquette), who decides to become a private investigator following her mother’s (Peters) death. Along Peggy’s hazardous journey toward self-discovery, she meets the uptight business owner who hires her (Garrett) and an anchorman-turned-desert-shaman (Friend). Other characters include her on-and-off parolee lover (Matt Dillon), best friend (Weruche Opia) and sister (Christine Taylor).

"You're at the point of no return!" Apple TV+ has revealed the official trailer for a new comedy series titled High Desert, featuring episodes directed by comedy filmmaker Jay Roach. This will be streaming on Apple TV+ starting in May this summer. High Desert follows Peggy, an on-again-off-again addict who decides to make a new start after the death of her beloved mother, with whom she lived in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California, and makes a life-changing decision to become a private investigator. Matt Dillon will play Denny, Peggy’s ex, an undeniably charming parolee, and a relentless operator. Patricia Arquette stars as Peggy, with Dillon, Rupert Friend, Weruche Opia, Brad Garrett, plus guest stars Bernadette Peters, Christine Taylor, Carmine Giovinazzo, and Carlo Rota. This mostly looks like Patty Arquette is having the time of her life in this role, hamming it up in this kooky small town misadventure.
