The 4:30 Movie is the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith – and while he was making the movie, he thought he was making something that would get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.
Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given Nc-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal.

Kevin Smith’s new film, The 4:30 Movie, has been shot and has now been snapped up for distribution worldwide: more here.
Rest is not on the agenda for Kevin Smith, who in recent times has invested in the cinema he frequented when he was younger, rebranding it The Smodcastle Cinemas. He co-owns the site, and also shot a film there by the name of The 4:30 Movie.
Starring Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup, The 4:30 Movie is described as a 1986-set comedy of age comedy, centred on three 16-year old chums who sneak into the movies every Saturday. What’s this, though? One of them, one day, invites a girl? Honestly. Tsk. Etc. She’s played by Siena Agudong, and also in the cast are Justin Long, Harley Quinn Smith, Keon Jeong and Jason Lee.

Having wrapped up (at least for now — there has still been talk of more Jay and Silent Bob movies and that long-anticipated Mallrats sequel) his Clerks universe with the third outing, Kevin Smith is back in original territory. His latest film, The 4:30 Movie, has just landed its first distribution deal.
Not, as you might initially suspect, a play on 4/20 and stoner culture (which has been a fertile subject matter for Smith), it'd actually a coming-of-age comedy set in the heady days of one summer in 1986.
We meet three 16-year-old friends, played by Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup, who like nothing more of a Saturday than sneaking into their local multiplex. Divisions creep in when one of them invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) along, and all end up learning lessons about life and love.

Saban Films announced today the acquisition of worldwide rights to the upcoming comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed and written by Kevin Smith.
Set in the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age story about three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.
Set in the mobile phoneless, social media-free era of the ’80s, Smith shot The 4:30 Movie at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey—the same movie theater he haunted every weekend as a teenager. Two years ago, Smith and his co-owners saved the century-old Atlantic Highlands bijou from demolition, renaming it after his podcast theater.

Nearly three and a half years have gone by since it was announced that director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro were re-teaming for a sequel to their cinematic adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books. A few months ago, Øvredal confirmed that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 was still in the works and a script has been written, the project had just been slowed down by the pandemic, the making of his Dracula movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and this year’s Hollywood strikes. But now Collider has shared a quote from the producers that indicates there might be some kind of trouble behind the scenes…
The screenplay for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 has been written by the first film’s writers Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman, working from a story crafted by del Toro.

The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Campfire tales. Town legends. Ghost stories. Whatever you want to call them, they exist as a way to tell stories from one generation to the next. They can be told at summer camp, at sleepovers, or by grandpa when he’s had an extra J & B and is feeling squirrely. They can be urban legends, embellished stories based in fact, or even just a made-up tale to illicit fright from its listeners. Kevin Smith will return to the director’s chair later this month or the next to direct his next film, “The 4:30 Movie”. Although there is a real strike going on in Hollywood, Smith has gotten a waiver from SAG to move forward with his next film. The film stands as an independent film with a completed script that allowed Smith to apply for a waiver from SAG– American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), informed him earlier this month with the go-ahead.
The New Jersey-born director has been busy going back and forth from California to Jersey for months. If you follow Smith on social media, you know that he sometimes attends movie screenings at his movie theater SModcastle Cinema located at 82 First Ave Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716. “The 4:30 Movie” will follow a group of teens in the 1980s who pay to get into one movie and spend the day theater-hopping.

While speaking with IGN, Øvredal – whose Dracula movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter reaches theatres on August 11th – confirmed that the sequel is still in development!
Øvredal said, “We have a story. We have a script. We’ve been working on the script as late as last year and even slightly into this year. The process obviously stopped with the strike – but it’s alive, for sure. Covid and then [The Last Voyage of the Demeter] eating up two years of...

Kevin Smith is someone who seems genuinely comfortable outside the realm of Hollywood politics. The writer/director has always served his career time on the fringe of the studio system while, at times, dabbing his foot into the crux of a big-budget movie. The foul-mouthed filmmaker also has the ability to produce a movie at a Woody Allen-esque pace as his films are made relatively cheap with non-complex productions. Smith has recently been given the green light to make a new film thanks to a waiver bestowed to him from the Screen Actors’ Guild.
ComicBook.com is reporting that Smith is ready to move forward with his next project, The 4:30 Movie. Smith famously wrote the doomed Superman Lives script for Tim Burton, whose Nicolas Cage incarnation now infamously became realized in The Flash, and he held a script reading event for the unmade project. It was here that the...

Smith’s geeky comedy is as lightweight as ever, but it retains its charm in the unlikely franchise’s third outing
Having launched his wobbly, weird career with the ultra-low-budget Clerks in 1994, Kevin Smith comes back full circle with a third bite at the cherry, a more lushly produced package than the trilogy’s originator but with the same old scrappy, scattershot mix of gags about adolescent genitalia and bodily fluids, geeky pop-culture references, and natural comic timing. Like the junk food that the central characters sell in their convenience store, it’s a strangely moreish brew that you enjoy but feel faintly guilty about consuming, like nachos with cheese-flavoured sauce or a blue slushy ice drink.
Smith has dabbled in making more conventional features, done standup comedy, podcasting and owned a bricks-and-mortar comic book store, but he knows that the Clerks franchise will always be his legacy. That means...

Alright you slackers, Labor Day’s in the rearview mirror. Time to “hit the bricks” and get back to work. If your first thought is “Aw, no”, “Ugh!”, or…something we can’t repeat here, then this film might resonate with you. At least that’s what a New Jersey-born filmmaker hopes, since that notion “put him on the map” nearly thirty years ago. And if your earlier response included the “salty talk”, then all the better. Hard to imagine that in 1994 Kevin Smith fashioned a script of his retail drudgery and unleashed Clerks on the world. Soon he was the darling of TV talk shows, getting offers from the major studios, and even flexed his “acting chops” (plus the grungy lil’ black and white was another jewel in the “indie cred crown” of Miramax Studios…...

In Kevin Smith’s debut feature “Clerks,” way back in 1994, the indie filmmaker told a story of two workaday twentysomethings whose lives were so tragically limited that they not only revolved around retail work, but when the characters did consider life’s big questions and mysteries, their lack of personal experience also left them searching for deeper meaning in pop culture ephemera like “Star Wars.”
Smith was a young filmmaker, naive cinematically but painfully, sometimes embarrassingly earnest in his commitment to capturing the lives of foul-mouthed losers who fill their days with crass sexual humor and existential malaise. Nearly 30 years later — and 16 years after “Clerks II” found his title characters trapped in the same old rut — he’s back with “Clerks III,” a film which doesn’t plumb popular culture for the meaning of life. Instead, it searches for that depth within the original “Clerks” and Smith’s own life story.

Like an ouroboros that has tired of sucking his own tail and moved on to another body part, Kevin Smith’s Clerks III is about as pure an exercise in self-referential self-gratification as you get on a movie screen, and if your understandable response is, “who the hell asked for this,” well, you’re just not paying attention.
More entrepreneur and raconteur than filmmaker (an assessment he might agree with), Smith knows he has enough loyal followers to justify multiple returns to nearly every well he has dug, at least those related to his “View Askewniverse.” But while some of his many spinoffs and sequels have smelled of near-desperation and little more, this one’s also personal: Inspired by the heart attack that nearly killed him in 2018, it’s a story about valuing those you love and trying to keep living until you’re dead.

In addition to reuniting him with several of the “Clerks” actors whose careers he helped launch back in 1994, “Clerks III” gave Kevin Smith another chance to direct his old friend Ben Affleck in a cameo role — and pay tribute to their long friendship with a very inside joke.
The two previously worked together on several early-career films, including “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma” and “Jersey Girl,” and as Smith told Variety at the new film’s Hollywood premiere at the Chinese 6, Affleck was extremely eager to appear in a cameo as one of several famous faces — including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Danny Trejo and Melissa Benoist — auditioning for a role in the movie-within-a-movie being made by the Quick Stop clerks.

Nearly 30 years after its cinematic debut, I assure you, the Quick Stop is open once again thanks to "Clerks III." After trying to manifest this project in a number of different ways since the release of the second film in 2006, fan-favorite filmmaker Kevin Smith is finally presenting the third chapter in Dante Hicks and Randal Graves' story in a theater near you. And interestingly enough, this movie brings the New Jersey native all the way back to his first chapter as the characters that kickstarted his career back in the early '90s are now making their own movie about working in a convenience store.

Mpx reps worldwide rights to the feature.
“Student Body,” written and directed by Lee Ann Kurr, the film follows a group of students at a prestigious high school where a teacher oversteps his bounds and the teens are forced to take matters into their own hands, with deadly consequences.
“Student Body” is produced by Rachel Liu, Sandra Leviton, and Lee Ann Kurr.
1091 Pictures plans a Feb. 8 release on digital and on-demand platforms.
“We were really impressed with Lee Ann’s directorial debut with this highly entertaining and elevated slasher flick that dives beyond the genre norms and offers a female-led perspective both onscreen and behind the camera,” said 1091’s head of content Eric Min.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark capitalized last year on the classic 1980s literary horror franchise responsible for generational childhood trauma with a feature film that—having earned $105.8 million worldwide—may not have set the box office scene on fire, but certainly provided a big enough bang for its studio’s budgetary buck. Consequently, sequel plans are now moving forward.
The creative band is getting back together for the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark sequel movie, with director André Øvredal and writers Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman set to return. Additionally, Guillermo del Toro—who worked on the first film’s screenplay after vacating the director’s chair—will return to develop the story on which the script will be based. The untitled sequel will be co-financed by Paramount Pictures and eOne, with the former handling distribution. This is a slight pipeline change from the previous movie,...

As the opening of the film mysteriously imparts, stories come in all shapes and sizes. Sharing scary stories with a group is a rich tradition that has been around for centuries, each generation passing down the one they heard from their childhood on to the next and so on and so on. There are hundreds of these stories, and Alvin Schwartz collected them and retold many in his three “Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark” books. The film adaptation of the same name, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, is a compilation of multiple characters from these tales, but like the book collections, the stories and characters are once again being retold. Between the three screenplay credits and two story by credits, the resulting story feels far less chilling and more obvious and predictable in a tale that isn’t short on creepy visuals but lacking originality.

“We tell ourselves stories in order to live,” a wise woman once said. And sometimes, we tell others stories to scare the living shit out of them. Like that one about the kid who keeps beating on a scarecrow in a cornfield — until one night, the scarecrow decides to beat back. Or the urban legend about the girl who found a pimple, only it wasn’t exactly a pimple (think spiders and eggs). Or the yarn about the Jangling Man, who … well, maybe you shouldn’t ask about him. Some stories are best left untold.

According to Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark‘s narration, some stories hurt. Some stories heal. In the case of André Øvredal’s bone-chilling anthology adaptation, some stories scare the ever-loving life out of audiences. Yes, Alvin Schwartz’s terrifying anecdotes angle towards children – but, like Stephen Gammell’s illustrations, Øvredal treats his intended audience as horror fans.
It’s *healthy* to feel scared, and this summer’s Guillermo del Toro-produced “introductory” horror tale is anything but 101-basic. No pandering to “age-appropriateness,” aka watered down kiddie content. As Schwartz’s stories come alive, nightmares suck the air from your lungs. Stick to Goosebumps if your family haunts easily – these scary stories aren’t for the faint of heart.
In the year 1968, amidst Mill Valley’s Halloween celebrations, a curse is unleashed. Stella Nicholls (Zoe Margaret Colletti) and her friends heed not local warnings about deceased legend Sarah Bellows,...

Stories have power. For nearly 40 years, the children’s book series by Alvin Schwartz and illustrator Stephen Gammell has captured the hearts and nightmares of children everywhere. The unnerving artwork and stories within weren’t afraid to get dark, and they didn’t dumb down the horror for its young readers. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has distilled the books down to its core essence to spin a spooky tale for a new generation of budding horror fans, while still offering up enough nostalgia for the fans who grew up on the series.
Set in 1968, Stella (Zoe Colletti) is a social outcast. Being a horror-obsessed aspiring writer would be enough to deem her unfit for the popular crowd as it is, but her mother left her and her father, Roy (Dean Norris), stirring up the town rumor mill in the process. For the better part of a decade, The Conjuring films have convinced a new generation that the ‘70s were the spookiest period of the 20th century. But with the arrival of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, a strong case is being made for the era before that—back when Nixon was first elected to the White House and the most nightmarish thing might’ve been how so few seemed to mind sending their youth to die by the thousands in Southeast Asia.
Leaning heavily into its 1968 setting, Scary Stories coyly dips its toe into a nostalgic stew of simpler times while also implicitly embracing the true horror of that America in a way even Quentin Tarantino turns a blind eye to. And in doing so,...

‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ Review: A Clever but Confused Adaptation of the Ya Horror Series
The late American writer and folklorist Alvin Schwartz tapped into the minds of young readers and traumatized generations of eager children by telling otherwise PG-13 horror tales with a transgressive, R-rated glee that made kids feel like they had read something they weren’t supposed to. There’s hardly a millennial in the United States who wasn’t happily scarred by the three volumes of Schwartz’s “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” series, and couldn’t describe Stephen Gammell’s rotting illustrations to their therapist in all of their red and blue detail.
André Øverdal’s film adaptation, as clever and well-crafted as it is, can’t help but invert the formula that the source material relied upon for its success. Here is an R-rated concept that’s been watered down until it passed for a PG-13 movie; it’s plenty harrowing and full of gruesome effects, but it never feels dangerous.

In the opening moments of director André Øvredal’s “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” a child’s voice tells us that stories have the power to hurt or heal. They make us who we are. True to its word, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” delivers an entrancing thriller that explores the power of narratives with a few screams to boot.
It’s welcoming enough for teens and perhaps just creepy enough for the average grown-up horror movie fan, since producer and co-writer Guillermo del Toro is one of the filmmakers bringing the monsters from Alvin Schwartz’s original novels to the big screen.
Like a late-’60s send-up of “Stranger Things” (itself a reference to other horror-movie inspirations from the ’80s), “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” follows a close group of friends, all outsiders, as their paths cross with a nefarious, supernatural presence. The...

It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home.

"Now they will get the monster they all deserve." CBS Films has revealed another new trailer for the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark horror movie, produced by Guillermo del Toro, based on the beloved scary stories book series. This is directed by Norwegian filmmaker André Øvredal, and it's also co-written by del Toro. This trailer features footage from all the different spooky stories that are part of the movie, but focuses on the "Jangly Man", who makes a big freaky appearance at the end with his jangly teeth and backwards creepy walking. Kill it! Kill it with fire! Ahhhh. Featuring a cast including Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza, Austin Zajur, Gabriel Rush, Kathleen Pollard, and Gil Bellows. This is likely the final full trailer before the movie opens in theaters in a few weeks, and it looks like it's going to be worth seeing on the big screen.
